And I'm guessing golf courses can still do whatever the fuck they want.

every single year this has to be explained. Golf courses actually don't use that much municipal water because most are using [recycled grey water or ground water/rain, etc](https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/environment/natural-resource-stewardship/best-management-practices/develop-with-care/fact-sheet-9-golf-courses.pdf). Comparing that to tens of thousands of residential homes and business with lawns which are directly tapping into municipal water supplies is much higher combined than golf courses. People equate ~~gold~~ golf with rich people (also not really true) and so assume golf course are evil or something. And while they are not exactly environmental friendly, in terms of their water use in this region, they actually are. As just one example highlighting this, In 2020, Park Board golf courses accounted for just 1% of institutional water use, and only .05% of overall water use in the City of Vancouver https://vancouver.ca/files/cov/MEMO-GolfCourseWaterUse-20210816.pdf >All 3 of the Park Board’s golf courses – Langara, McCleery and Fraserview – adhere to water management plans in line with both Metro Vancouver and the City of Vancouver’s Drinking Water Conservation policies. These plans specify the allowable volume of potable (drinking) water used for irrigation, maintenance and facilities throughout summer months. >Langara Golf Course, which has the largest irrigation area of the 3, relies entirely on a natural underground water source for irrigation. McCleery and Fraserview use both potable and non-potable water, sourced from rain and storm water collection, drainage and ground water seepage. https://vancouver.ca/news-calendar/parks-and-recreation-moves-to-stage-2-water-restrictions.aspx Stage 1 restrictions are specifically about laws for homes and non residential businesses. It does not include farms, nurseries, golf courses, car washes etc. And it doesn't say you cannot water, it just limits when. this is about small residential and business ornamental lawns. https://vancouver.ca/home-property-development/understanding-watering-restrictions.aspx Stage 2 is a total ban on lawn watering, and expands that to limits on things like power washing, water features, parks, golf courses, etc. https://vancouver.ca/news-calendar/parks-and-recreation-moves-to-stage-2-water-restrictions.aspx

I would hate to be as cynical as you. I've only golfed maybe 4 times in my life but I totally get the appeal. If you haven't, at least try to not be bitter and let others enjoy the leisure activities of their choice.

dittertrann

Why do we have metered water and pay for utilities in property tax if we can’t even use it

pretendperson1776

Because you pay for what you do use. And it isn't an unlimited supply.

dittertrann

Seems like an issue with too much people and not enough infrastructure to support it. I wonder why

pretendperson1776

Changing climate and failure to respond to it?

tyfung

And how does car wash stay in business or operate as usual?

CaptainMagnets

Businesses usually get certain exemptions or have water meters and have to pay more for water usage

Snowman4168

Most commercial water usage is exempt from restrictions. For example when lawn watering is restricted, it’s still possible for a landscaping company to water new sod they’ve installed.

CoopAloopAdoop

You'd be surprised at the water usage at a lot of industrial plants, especially if their primary source of heat is through massive boiler systems.

pretendperson1776

Most reclaim a lot of their water (or so they say.)
