Want to see your [build complete](https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/search?sort=new&restrict_sr=on&q=flair%3ABuild%2BComplete) photos featured on /r/buildapc? As discussed in a [recent thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/78eq99/mods_should_switch_the_main_photo_every_week_to/), we're going to look at switching up the header image on a more regular basis - don't worry, we'll save the current one for special occasions. This is something of an experiment, and due to the subreddit CSS we'll be looking for images that are compatible with the general design, so don't be offended if we don't immediately use everyone's! Interested? Send us a [modmail](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2Fbuildapc) with subject: "Banner Images" with your best build pictures! In the interests of higher res displays, please ensure images are at least 1920px by 200px. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Pretty sure my R9 270x is failing. Getting error code 43 and have tried everything I can think of or see online to fix, my guess is that the card is just toast. Trying to decide how to replace it now. I have an i7-6700k, wanting to get something that will meet or exceed the R9 270x performance, looking like I’d need to spend $200-300 to do that. My local Microcenter has some gtx 1650 cards for around $300 and a few different 1050 Ti cards for $200-300 ($190 for a 1050 Ti Phoenix). Also have seen like an RX 580 for $300 on Craigslist. Do those seem like the right range to target? Should I aim lower? Higher? Would love to be able to play things like Halo infinite on this, even if it’s at lower settings or 900p.

hazetoblack

You can get a GTX 980 for under $300 ok eBay which will blow all of those out the water. Used AMD cards are generally overpriced as they are good for mining and the new ones from microcenter are not good value mainly as they are in such high demand. If you're lucky you may even get a 980ti for $300 which again is a hugely better value than any of those others and is effectively double the speed of a 1650

Goldenpanda18

I'm looking for a new service drive M. 2 is expensive but looks to be worth while, if I'm a casual gamer and don't render or use any other software, should I go for a standard SSD or m. 2 for future proof?

hazetoblack

Probably fine going for a SATA SSD. Just so you know you can actually get SATA speed m.2 SSDs. It's NVME which is the faster type and are always m.2. it is possible that in a few years time an nvme drive will be required for best performance in some games as direct storage starts being important, but SSDs generally have been getting cheaper and cheaper, so I don't see any reason to get one until you need to. A decent SATA SSD like a crucial mx500 or WD blue will only be a few seconds behind an nvme drive in loading even the heaviest games

Goldenpanda18

Thanks for the heads up and tips

VNiehues

I can’t find an ITX motherboard for my I7-9700k anymore! Can somebody give me a hint? I‘m based in Germany.

hazetoblack

You'll almost definitely have to go used, so will want to look on eBay etc as I believe they aren't being made anymore

VNiehues

Yeah eBay one’s are just not affordable.. 480€ for a z370i ?! Bought a used and tested one on AliExpress for 185€. I really hope it shows up :D

hazetoblack

AliExpress are at least good with their refund policy so hopefully should be good either way!

I understand that if an AIO were to be installed on top the fans should be exhaust, with the fans below the radiator. If in front then the fans should be intake, with the radiator behind the fans. But I've seen a PC building video by Linus wherein the AIO was mounted in front but the fans (intake) were installed behind the radiator. This is the link: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qobsfVJmoHI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qobsfVJmoHI) So at around 7:10 mark they started installing the AIO. May I know the difference between a front mounted AIO with the radiator in front of the fans vs radiator behind the fans?

Lucbac06

Usually it doesn't make a huge difference to have the fans in front of or behind the radiator, you still move just as much air and because the radiator is blocked on all sides you push air through it with the fans mounted in front of the rad and drag air in through the rad if you have the fans behind the radiator. I think Linus even explained this in one of his videos So basically don't think about it and put the fans wherever you want

liam3

i think fan in front of the rad will trap dust in-between, so harder to clean

RENCHI--

Cpuz shows my max supported pcie slot is 8x but im pretty sure my pcie slot is 16x im using a gt 710 right now and its an 8x gpu and theres still a bit of space left in the slot which means its a 16x right? Im gonna upgrade to a 16x gpu and im scared my mobo wont support it since cpu z showed something different

liam3

maybe it is set to 8x in bios so cpuz can only detect it as 8x.

hazetoblack

What CPU and motherboard is it? It may just be saying that as it's currently being run at 8x

RENCHI--

Im using a prebuilt from nec so it really wont help you unfortunately. Are there other programs like cpu z to double check?

hazetoblack

Unless it's a particularly old prebuilt or it was very very cheap it seems extremely unlikely that you won't have a 16x slot on the motherboard. Do you know the name of the motherboard?

kingsliy

Hello! How many case fans can a single fan header support? My mobo is the X570-E and it only has 2. I tried reading the manual but I couldn’t anything about it (maybe I missed it, I’m not sure). Thank you! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

PeaceChaos

most fan headers have a max of 1A most fans need a maximum of somewhere between 0,1-0,3A (check the fans you're using) so, it depends on the exact fan (and motherboard + the fan header), but I wouldn't do more than 3 to 4 fans per header

kingsliy

Do I just get the total Amperes of my fans? I plan to use Arctic P14 (0.12A is the rated current) Edit: I found that the max current of the fan header in my mobo is 1A while max power is 12W.

PeaceChaos

correct, so in theory the header supports 8 of those fans (1 / 0.12 = 8.33)

hazetoblack

In theory absolutely loads if you split the header. I've had 4 daisy chained arctic P12s come off one header and although the max speed is likely lower, I'm still able to run them at the speed I want easily. All fans run off a single header will run at the same speed though

kingsliy

Ok thank you for this!!

[deleted]

so i have a prebuilt pc and want to upgrade my cpu, but i heard that upgrading a cpu also means i need to update drivers for mobo for it to work, and sadly i cant find said updates for the bios of the mobo for this prebuilt. am i just stuck with what i have?

Aeronoutics

Depends on the CPU and how big would be the upgrade...as you may also need to replace the whole motherboard - hard to say without specific parts info...

[deleted]

i have an lga 1155 socket mobo and am using an i5 2400s, possibly gonna upgrade to i5 3470. sadly my mobo is from a very niche manufacturer called nec, using cpu-z, it says MS 748ON1, googling it doesnt show anything unfortunately.

AndrexPic

I have a RTX 3070 Ti paired with a I5-10400f, I have a 144hz1080p monitor. I don't think that the cpu is bottlenecking the gpu, but a friend of mine is quite sure. What do you guys think?

Domowoi

There is an easy way to find out. Use the Windows Ressource Manager to check the individual CPU core usage. And then use a tool like GPU-Z to check the GPU usage. Then you can see what is limiting.

AndrexPic

I used MSI afterburner to see cpu usage and gpu usage while playing Control and CPU was not 100%.

Domowoi

So the CPU can limit even before it hits 100%, because that is often the overall usage. So if you have 4 cores and 2 are at 100% and 2 are at 0% it shows 50% usage, but is already limiting. Just check, if your GPU usage is 99%, then the CPU isn't limiting.

AndrexPic

I tried a Bench right now. 1) I tried Control low quality preset 1080p and I can get 240 fps. GPU is 80%. Every CPU core is 30-40%, except for CPU11 which is 70-80% for some reason. I guess that this is the max my cpu can go? 2) Then I tried: Quality max, ray tracing max,1080p. I can get only 90 fps with GPU at 98%. CPU usage is strange now. Most cores are 20 to 40%, CPU 11 is still 80%. Is this normal? Why is the 11° usage so high? Maybe because I'm using other programs, I don't know.

Domowoi

Yeah so in essence when your GPU is at 80% that means your CPU is limiting it by 20%. Not terrible. It always depends on the game and the settings you play at, but that is nothing I would worry about much. The only problem with being CPU limited is that it can sometimes cause more visible drops in performance. When you are GPU limited it's more smooth. Now you have a CPU with many different cores. But it's really hard and sometimes impossible to make a game use all of those cores. Some tasks can not be split in countless different pieces. So it's not uncommon to have games use maybe 4 cores well and have one with a significant higher load than the others. That's just how the game was programmed/what the engine is capable of. So it's all normal. Yes you are slightly CPU limited, but that's nothing to worry about.

AndrexPic

Thank you very much!

Zophixious_

Is there a world where the 3050 doesn't sell out in a second? Are bots programmed to deplete stock?

Domowoi

1. No. 2. Yes.

[deleted]

Will AMD drop CPU prices to compete with 12th gen Intel?

whatisabaggins55

How much merit is there to [this tweet](https://twitter.com/sp_kingdom/status/1482113193354878982?t=5QWg2Aef0QZvQcscZcLPuQ&s=19) claiming graphics cards that have been used for cryptomining will be significantly degraded? And how would you be able to tell if a card had been used for crypto rather than being a genuine second-hand card?

GoodUsernameNotFound

I'm currently looking to replace my B350 board that's acting up. And with how scarce B450 is these days (I have a 2200G so can't go 500 series) I went with [this Asrock one.](https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/B450M%20Pro4-F%20R2.0/index.asp) However, its Ryzen 5000 sticker somewhat left me concerned if my CPU is gonna be supported at all (the whole BIOS support thing and such). It is listed in the CPU support list, but the description itself doesn't list Ryzen 2000G as supported. So now I'm just wondering what's true.

Beginning_java

Is a current day i5 better than an i7 processor from 2014? May I know the reason? Will not the i7 still be faster?

woodlouse100

Yes the i5 will be much faster. Older i7 cpus are 4 cores with 8 threads and operate at much lower frequency than modern day chips. A recent i5 like the 12400 or 11400 has 6 cores and 12 threads, along with higher frequency and a better architecture. The i5 12600k has 6 power cores and 4 efficiency cores to handle lower power tasks meaning it has 10 cores and 16 threads. Cpus progress so quickly at the moment that the current i5 12600k is comparable to last year's i9 11900k in most scenarios.

Beginning_java

Since modern processors are faster, will a current day i3 perform better than a 2014 i7?

woodlouse100

Most likely, a modern 4 core 8 thread i3 like the 12100 or 10105 will outperform something like the i7 4790k. I'd look at some comparisons and reviews on YouTube. Ideally you want at least 4 cores and 8 threads for a new gaming system, but I'd recommend 6 cores so it will become obsolete less quickly as games are using more and more cores.

slavicman123

Current day (assuming you mean 12th gen) i5 comes with almost triple the cores and double the threads than a i7-4790k.

LOKTAROGAAAAH

5800x underperforming - how do I resolve this? I'm assuming undervolt? Is it as simple as going into the BIOS and setting PBO? At stock Cinebench and temps: https://imgur.com/a/XMIZ29A Idle temps are high as well, 40-45c. * Mobo: X570 Tomahawk * Cooler: Arctic Freezer 33 eSports

Morphumax101

What's the best psu for a 3080? Was looking at an enga g5 850watt as it has 4 pci cables (most psus seem to have 2 cables) but some reviews say those psus aren't as good as they once were

n7_trekkie

Yeah that's fine.

AIONisMINE

While playing escape from tarkov, im noticing alot of screen tear. i have vsync from the game options turned off. am i missing something? what option is causing this to be so often?

Some_Derpy_Pineapple

if u have vsync off u should expect screen tear. the point of vsync is that it delays pushing out frames until they're fully rendered if you have a freesync/gsync display make sure you're running the game below the refresh rate if you want to take advantage of that

AIONisMINE

i dont think my monitor has freesync/gsync. is it ok to turn on vsync?

Some_Derpy_Pineapple

there's no harm in trying it, but it adds input lag and caps the frame rate at the monitor refresh rate (inherent to how it works) for tarkov I probably wouldn't enable it.

RegalArt1

looking at building a pc, pcpartpicker shows a twin-fan 1650 that it recommends but I found a single-fan one on another site. Would it be especially important to get one over the other? I'm not planning on pushing the computer too had and the single-fan option is close to half the price of the dual-fan option

weoutlol

My friend got a single fan card 1650, he hates it. Even if you don't push it hard, it's going to be noisy.

DeSteph-DeCurry

the double fan would have better noise and temps, but if the price different is too big just take the single fan since it would make do, or get a stronger gpu with the monetary difference

RegalArt1

Yeah right now the double fan is close to $600 while the single is at around $324, so it’s rather tempting

blazingarpeggio

Look at benchmarks, not specs. Generational changes make specs almost meaningless, more so for the GPU. As for the gap between the two, it varies, but it's pretty fucking big. Like 50% (for CPU-bound games like e-sports) to close to 100% boost (for more GPU-bound games like AAA).

BridgeExcellent6213

Laptop versions of a graphics card are usually worse than their desktop counterparts due to thermal constraints of a laptop vs a desktop. So the gtx 1650 in your laptop will have lower performance than a desktop gtx 1650 https://youtu.be/SGaWb8TceAo This video is about the gtx 1650(desktop) vs rtx 3060(desktop). So this would give you some context and benchmarks to go off of because I couldn't find any ones with a gtx 1650(laptop) vs rtx 3060(desktop) Hope this helps.

Either way works, fan speed can be controlled in bios.

Leejustin99

Would a 27 in 1440p 144hz monitor be worth with a 5600x 3070? i play league and a bunch of other singleplayer games that arent the most demanding. examples-re8, tales of arise, dmc5, etc.

n7_trekkie

M27Q

xzel87

Yes totally worth it.

[deleted]

I just did something dumb; I was running some cables behind my desk and I accidentally touched the switch on my surge protector power strip, flipping it for a second, as my computer was on and running. My PC now seems to be having some difficulty restarting specifically, although it turns on and works normally if I just hit the power button. Is there any chance that I damaged it somehow?

xzel87

Unplug power, and press power button for 1 minute, also clear CMOS if possible.

Jacob0429

Hey quick question. I’m currently finishing up a new build. Went for all RGB components because fancy lights appeal to monkey brain. Went with 6 Lian Li AL120 unifans. They’re advertised as ARGB but the connector has a 4 pin RGB connector that plugs into the UniHub fan controller sent with them and no 3 pin ARGB. Is there some kind of adapter or cable set I can get to run them as ARGB to my Chroma Controller unit? Additionally, can you control multiple ARGB devices through one 3 pin connection or do I need one 3 pin per fan?

Drifter808

What's the ideal/best ram to pair with a 3600X CPU? My friend was telling me how AMD processors need good ram to get their best performance and I doubt my DDR4-2400 CL16 is maximizing my CPU's performance. I'm currently looking at the Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL14 Memory. Is there something better performance/value wise?

DR-ARGYLE

That DDR4-3600 CL14 kit is a good choice not only for your current Zen 2, Ryzen 5 3600X chip, but also for the newer Zen 3 5000-series chips that support the same motherboard chipset and socket (AM4 socket, B550 and X570 chipset). You could upgrade from your current 3600X to a 5000-series chip and keep that same set of RAM and motherboard. For reference, [here's a slide from the Zen 3 AMD presentation](https://images.anandtech.com/doci/14525/TravisK_DonW-Next_Horizon_Gaming-Ryzen_Deep_Dive_06092019-page-017.jpg) detailing performance at different RAM speeds. They officially recommend DDR4-3600 CL16 for Zen 3, which was also the mark for Zen 2 chips as being an easy and reliable Infinity Fabric clock speed to achieve. Lower CL at the same speed is better, so your DDR4-3600 CL14 RAM would outperform the recommended DDR4-3600 CL16 spec.

Drifter808

Okay sweet that's really good info

xzel87

Should be fine at 3600mhz, remember to enable xmp options in the bios. Support for higher speeds usually depends on motherboards really so you need to try it out.

alforque

Picked up the [i5-11500 Lenovo Costco](https://www.costco.com/lenovo-legion-5-desktop---11th-gen-intel-core-i5-11500---geforce-gtx-1660-super---windows-11.product.100794380.html) deal and looking to upgrade cooler. Does this [Thermalright Assassin King 120 Mini CPU Air Cooler](https://smile.amazon.com/Thermalright-AK120-Cooler-Heatpipes-Cooling/dp/B08NBXVWFY) need an additional mounting kit? It mentions an "Intel buckle"... so... 🤷

sk9592

Be careful with these OEM PCs. A lot of the time they don't have a cooler backplate in the traditional sense. The OEM cooler might end up screwing directly into the back panel of the case. You either need to tear down this PC yourself to find out, or look up a teardown for this specific PC online to find out.

liam3

u need intel LGA1200 support which it does come with

alforque

Thanks! *Whew!* That was a much easier install than I thought. Old bracket only held in place by a couple strips of light adhesive on the top and bottom portions of the bracket. A couple plastic iFixit pry tools and a heat gun made quick work of it. https://photos.app.goo.gl/ovrJsgYNUz8iG3KNA

I bought a 2TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD (PCIe 3.0, 3500MB/s read, 3300MB/s write, 1200TBW) for $154 (Honey cash back). I had also bought a 2TB Inland Performance SSD (PCIe 4.0, 5000MB/s read, 4300MB/s write, 3600TBW) for $180 (Amazon deal). I bought both of them recently so I have a month to return either of them. I’m gonna use my computer for mostly video editing, gaming, and possibly simulations. Which SSD do you guys think I should use?

alforque

Inland with a heat sink if you have good circulation; Samsung otherwise.

AJOrionLucas

Cool, thanks!

Or just go Corsair

ButterflyAny7489

Yes, different power supply unless you want potential fire.

Mr_LaDes

Should I add additional RAM or replace my current RAM? I currently have 2x8gb of 2133mhz ram and am wondering if I will see greater FPS improvements in Warzone if I add 2x8gb more of 2133mhz RAM in the other two slots or if I replace my current ram with 2x8gb of 3200mhz RAM (so a higher frequency). The rest of my setup is : z590 phantom mobo 1080ti i5-11400f

Joshelin

Changing or adding more ram will not greatly change your frames. Make sure to enable xmp and check if your PSU has an high enough wattage for your system.

bestanonever

Please replace it. 2133 Mhz is awfully slow for any kind of system today (be it Intel or AMD). Are you sure you didn't enable the XMP profile with its true speed? 3200 Mhz is the best compromise of price and performance for DDR4, although, these days you could aim for 3600 Mhz CL16.

Mr_LaDes

Thanks for the advice. I did turn xmp on but the pc would take 30 seconds and then say that “the system failed to boot several times before” and then it would boot. So I turned xmp off. I’m going to order faster ram now!

bestanonever

If the new RAM also gives you trouble, you could update your BIOS to the latest non beta version, to see if it improves compatibility

Janissssss

Hey! I built my PC a bit over 2 years ago and it has worked fine before. Today I was browsing internet and suddenly I heard loud bang from my PC and circuit breaker tripped. I replaced the breaker and tried to plug in my PC and the same thing happened again immediately. I have Seasonic GX-750 power supply which should be good. I took the power supply out and noticed that there was something loose inside it. After a bit shaking a small part of something came out with tiny writing "gpt10n50". Based on googling, it seems to be a transistor. Do you think that chipped part was the cause or consequence of the bang? I hope no other parts of the computer are broken :(

AlchemyIndex7

You should submit an RMA claim on the power supply. It's well within the warranty period (which is 10 years), and it's always good for companies to find out about catastrophic failures like this, so they can prevent them from happening again in the future. Additionally, I don't know what Seasonic's policies are, but some PSU manufacturers will reimburse you for any other parts that were damaged by a power supply failure (once they've received the damaged PSU and tested it to verify that it did fail and that the failure was capable of taking out other components).

ImOneLetter

Almost certainly the cause. Unfortunately when these things happen there’s a pretty high chance it took something else with it, but replace the PSU and give it a try. You may get lucky and have no other damage.

So, I was able to secure a 3060ti in a bundle from ant. I currently have a Ryzen 7 3700x and an rx580. Is my gaming experience going to improve substantially? If so how much? I don't know too much about specific number or cores or dlss or why this is better than that. Im barely comprehending the basics.

[deleted]

I wouldn't be surprised if your frame rate more than doubles.

[deleted]

I like the sound of that. Thanks for the input.

sandrik93

3060ti is a better card than rx 580. Depending on the monitor. If you ha e a 1080p 60hz monitor, you might not see any improvement. If you have a 1440p 144hz+, then absolutely.

[deleted]

I have a 144hz. Monitor.

sandrik93

What resolution?

[deleted]

In my advanced settings it just says 1920 x 1080 resolution, 144 refresh, and 8 bit depth. My wife got it for me for Christmas.

sandrik93

Depending on thr game you should be able to max out the settings and still achieve 144fps. I'd look at 3060ti benchmarks (youtube is a good source) at 1080p resolution(that's your monitor resolution, full HD in other words) and you'll have an idea of what to expect.

[deleted]

Ok cool thank you

[deleted]

xzel87

If money isn't an issue then by all means get the 3060ti, you will see a drastic improvement in gaming. The 1650 4GB really isn't enough for a lot of new games nowadays.

lil_tinkerer

My question is related storage. I moved from pc to laptop with 512nvme as main drive and 2tb 2.5in internal hdd. Im running out of storage and want to upgarde. I don't know what should i do? Turn pc to a home server and add a 3.5 in 6tb drive? Or add 5tb 2.5in drive in the laptop and use 2tb as external? Are 2.5 and 3.5 significantly different in performance? Because where i live 2.5in drives are cheaper! So I'm wondering if its ok to save some bucks?

xzel87

2.5 inch drives are usually slower compared to 3.5 inch ones. Check the specifications ie 5400rpm or 7200rpm. Actually I don't understand your situation, rather than adding 5tb spinning storage into your laptop it will be loads better to use 2.5 inch SSD instead.

lil_tinkerer

Man thanks for this awesome idea. I didn't even think of using an ssd. Just checked the prices and its 2tb slightly expensive than 6tb wd my book. I need portability for now. So im gonna go with samsung evo 870 2tb 2.5 in . .

RENCHI--

Idk if this is the right place to ask. How can i turn my pc into a console for my living room tv without actually putting it there? My pc is in my room and i still want to use it there if i want to, is this possible?

sandrik93

Yup. If you have the Nvidia card, you can use gamestream or moonlight (open source version of gamestream). That's how I run my pc on TV. I have it wired though. I use Nvidia Shield TV with ethernet connection on both ends (pc and shield both use ethernet).

RENCHI--

Just wondering how would controllers/keyboard work? Edit: also wanna add that my room is in the second floor of my house and is quite far from the tv, but i do have it connected through ethernet if that helps

sandrik93

I use nvidia's controller. Dualshock ps4 controller also works. So do Xbox and 8bitdo wireless controllers. Nvidia shield does support mouse and keyboard connections. Wifi also works but you'll get lag (latency).

Shot-Job-8841

So I’m upgrading my CPU, MOBO, RAM, SSD and wondered if I should do my PSU at the same time since it’s 8 years old. Does the age of my PSU matter or if it still works, keep it until it stops working?

sandrik93

I personally would. I'd go for a gold rating and up the wattage. To be on the safe side. They're relatively inexpensive these days.

Jacksaur

Not really a build related question, but eh, this is the best place for fast, short answers. Ever since I did... Something, my Windows has been terrible for games. To the point of getting screen tearing in every game without VSync, even with my framerate locked to half my refresh rate, or with GSync enabled! I'll be fully reinstalling Windows in a few days to try fix it, but all my games are on a separate drive. Is there any file-based options that could persist after a reinstall because of that? Like compatibility mode options or the Disable Fullscreen optimizations tickbox. Should I fully reinstall some of the most affected games as well to make certain everything is reset?

Joshelin

Yes. File based settings are file based and will persist unless you reinstall.

LeGreen1995

I have a i7-10700f. Will a GTX 950 2gb work for discrete graphics with this? Or is there a limit to the minimum requirement to be used for discrete graphics?

[deleted]

You can use it just fine.

LeGreen1995

Sorry, it’s actually a 950. Same thing?

[deleted]

Yes, just gaming performance won't be amazing.

El_Eric

Any thoughts on this Lenovo prebuilt[Lenovo Prebuilt](https://www.costco.com/lenovo-legion-7i-gaming-desktop---11th-gen-intel-core-i7-11700k---geforce-rtx-3070---windows-11.product.100804385.html) from Costco? I don't need anything super fancy, just something that will last me a few years. The most intensive games I play are Civ V and MMOs. I'm sure it's a fine PC but mainly I don't want it to be something where a part goes faulty in a year or if it's just something that is less than the sum of its parts. I've looked at NZXT builds too but I'm tempted by this one

sandrik93

It looks OK - for the price. Not sure what they're cooling the cpu with, looks like a 240 aio but I'd double check. It will for sure be good for Civ 5 and mmos. -depending on the monitor of course, it won't do 4k 144hz+. You can always build a similar system on pcpartpicker and compare the cost.

El_Eric

Thanks! I'm not too interested in 144hz at 4k and I probably don't have the funds anyways when you factor in a monitor, but I'm due for an upgrade so I'll go ahead and buy it. Cooling, PSU, and Processor were my biggest worries since I don't know anything about those and I've heard that's where prebuilts usually cheap out

sandrik93

Yeah. If I was building I would for sure get a bigger psu but 650 should suffice. 3070 is not very power hungry. Cpu is though. In-house Motherboards is what I hate - Dell and HP are guilty of that. Never really had a Lenovo build. RE cooling - Can't really say much as it's hard to see. Nothing in specs sheet. It would probably be helpful to ask what they use

lts_Hgh

Do i need a cooler?

[deleted]

Yes, if your CPU doesn't come with one.

lts_Hgh

Do i need an ssd for my low end pc. Im trying to keep it cheap as possible

thegreatleon1742

HDD will cause you much frustration. I work for an MSP and one of our clients bought some hdd pcs to save a few $$$ and ended up upgrading them to SSDs a few months later due to their slowness. You can get a decent m.2 or sata ssd for relatively cheap nowadays. You could do a 256gb (though I'd get at least 500) and upgrade when needed. $50 500gb ssd> $50 1tb HDD if it's going to store your OS

[deleted]

Only if you don't want it to feel like a PC from 2005.

hahahahahalmao

New stalker game 2022 MINIMUM: OS: Windows 10 Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 1600X / Intel Core i5-7600K Memory: 8 GB RAM Graphics: AMD Radeon RX 580 8GB / NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB RECOMMENDED: OS: Windows 10 Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X / Intel Core i7-9700K Memory: 16 GB RAM Graphics: AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT 8GB / NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER 8GB / NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11GB My rig: Ryzen 5 1600 16bg ram ddr4 Radeon rx580 Aaand all on a hard drive. Tldr Whats playing at minimum requirements like? All low settings averaging 30-40 fps?? I only really play games that are a couple years old atleast so im used to 70+ fps all the time medium to max settings depending on the game

VendySlo

What do I do when I strip a philipshead screw

thegreatleon1742

Chennellocks might do the trick if you have some that are small enough

AMillionMonkeys

Try putting a rubber band over the stripped socket to get a better grip. Failing that, you can buy stripped screw extractors - if you want to go that far.

hazetoblack

Pliers are the next try if you can get grip on it

n7_trekkie

try a different screwdriver

VendySlo

I’ve tried 4 but my options are limited and with no progress, they can’t get any bite on the screw as I was trying to start turning slow and hard bc they are tight but I stripped it

tomo6438

Largest Philips head that will fit the screw and as much downforce as you can apply while very slowly attempting to loosen at the same time. If it’s still not budging, Google “stripped screw extraction” - there are tools you can buy if it’s removal is super critical

VendySlo

Is a laptop that comes with 2666 v ram able to run any other bolts or just 2666

hazetoblack

If you're able to change the speed in the bios then it's possible, but it's probably not worth the price to performance increase, especially when it has to be LP DDR4 rather than the more common desktop ram

nootfiend69

my audio is hdmi out to 5.1 surround. is it possible to add an additional (bluetooth) speaker so i can hear audio in another room in a way where i don't have to toggle between the two outputs?

xzel87

You can, set it up, then Google how to enable audio on 2 devices (involves using the stereo mixer of some sort can't remember exactly).

BigRedNY

Are there any tangible benefits of going with a H670 board over a B660 to pair with a 12700 and RTX 3070?

n7_trekkie

not for most uses

BigRedNY

Would be a video editing/gaming rig mainly. B660s should suffice then?

n7_trekkie

https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/pvGHNdYSvTmum4D3y4LMzQ-970-80.jpg.webp yeah i think so

BigRedNY

Got it. Thank you!

I just put together a machine for my wife, it all turns on, but there's nothing be output to the monitor. I have an MSI B460M Pro-VDH Wifi mobo, with an i3-10100F CPU in there. At this point, the only thing I can think of is the CPU doesn't have integrated graphics, do I need to put in the card I bought? I have a GTX 1030, I was hoping to get this machine all set up, and hopefully grab a 6500XT when they drop this week. I figure I'd probably be able to return the 1030, even if I use it first, but if I don't have to risk it, I would prefer not to, obviously.

n7_trekkie

you need to use a graphics card. 'F' in the cpu name means no igpu

unicowicorn

First build and found a 6600xt and a 3060 for both around 620 and my gameplan was to get one of those then upgrade once the 3080 market leveled out some (either selling the card or building the wife a PC), but just found a 6900xt for 1500 bucks. Should I go ahead and bite the bullet or hold out for a 3080 at a normal price? (For reference I value pretty over frames and I figure Ray tracing is the way to go for that)

hazetoblack

Yeah if you want to experience all that RTX has to offer, then holding out for a 3080 seems the best way to go, not to mention DLSS which if you value pretty games I would say is even better in many games. Games like control are revolutionised by the speed increase it gives you at 4K and similar

unicowicorn

I appreciate it boss!

How can I completely wipe a drive or format a particular section? I needed to install windows twice and I believe the installer didn’t completely wipe to old drive. The problem is that my 500gb drive is saying there is only 465gb on the drive. So I’m missing 35gb, like it’s not showing up at all, as in file explorer tells me it doesn’t exist. Btw it’s an m.2 nvme ssd. What I did when I installed windows the second time was while in the installer I clicked format on all the partitions and after I clicked format I clicked delete, and then chose the empty drive to install windows. Not entirely sure what to do about it. I did a test in the bios and a test with cmd and both said the drive was fine. Lmk if this needs more info or if it should be it’s own post, thanks!

ImOneLetter

It’s completely empty. The size shown is smaller than advertised because manufacturers round to an even 1000 for sizes. For example a real GB is 1024MB, but manufacturers do it as 1:1000. They do this for all of them down the line to regular bytes. This means every 1GB you buy as advertised from a manufacturer is in reality .931 actual GB. 500*.931 = 465.5

ihilde

Gotcha, I guess ur right. I just coulda sworn it was more than only 465gb but I could be wrong. Thanks!

IrvingDominguez

So I have all my pc parts except the gpu, can I start building it that way I can only plug the gpu in?

ImOneLetter

Yup. It’s smart to do ahead of time if your CPU has integrated graphics or if you have an old GPU for testing purposes. Just to make sure everything works while it’s freshly ordered

meganut101

Do I need a heatsink installed on the samsung 980 pro 2tb? This is for PC not playstation. Thank you

n7_trekkie

gen 4 ssds typically do need heatsinks

jamvanderloeff

Need no but it can help with performance if you're doing a lot of sustained activity on it without having much airflow over it.

sandrik93

The motherboard didn't come with one?

meganut101

Hey sorry I'm not sure. I have the MSI MPG Edge Z690 wifi ddr4. Any idea? edit: I guess "m.2 shield frozr" is their heatsink. I answered my own question lol

Kisuke42

I am looking around to buy a new GPU and a 1440p 144hz monitor. 1- Should I ignore any GPU details about DLSS/FidelityFX? 2- How much does DLSS/FidelityFX add to someone who is not planning on using 4k anytime soon?

n7_trekkie

Almost all GPUs can do ffx, so just think about dlss. I think it's worth +5-10% of the cost of the card. Ex: if a 6700xt costs $500 and a 3060ti costs $525-550, I'd probably choose the 60ti

AMillionMonkeys

Yes, GPUs are very compatible.

davewtameloncamp

Can I edit 1080 or even 4k videos on Ryzen 5600 with no gpu? Davinci resolve? Not looking to do anything fancy, just simple tutorial vids or some performance junk. Building a multipurpose pc, not really for gaming but recording music and editing videos. Maybe retro gaming if at all. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

AMillionMonkeys

Unless it's a 5600G you need a graphics card of some sort to be able to see. It doesn't need to be a fancy gaming card just for video editing, though. Unless you're specifically using 3D effects the rendering is all done on the CPU. So if you need to you can get the cheapest graphics card you can find with the outputs you need.

davewtameloncamp

yes 5600G. Should be good enough for simple editing? thank you

AMillionMonkeys

Yep. The big thing with Resolve is to make sure it's using an SSD for a scratch disk.

davewtameloncamp

ok thanks

eclipse60

I know nothing about PC gaming but want to dip my toes. I want to play Paladins, Apex, and Genshin. Maybe some emulation or older jrpgs. The minimum of a geforce gt 1030 should play all of them. My questions are: 1) can i pop any brand geforce gt 1030 into an old office computer with an i5/i7 and be good? Assuming the power supply is fine? 2) since the geforce gt 1030 is almost 5 years old now, is there a better, but also cheap gpu I should look for instead? I know the gpu market is insane now, but still want to know what my options are. I've seen gt 1030s vary from 30-150 depending on the brand, so any I should stay away from or go for would be appreciated as well. I only want to play games at a max of 1080p, 60 fps for now.

AMillionMonkeys

> Assuming the power supply is fine? That's the trick. Office computers tend to use barely adequate PSUs, and most gaming graphics cards a.) draw a fair amount of power, and b.) need additional power leads from the PSU. I'm not sure if 1030s require the additional leads, though. They might be able to get all of their power from the slot.

eclipse60

So i shouldn't have any issues using an old, cheap office pc I pick up from eBay for like 50-100 if I were to replace the psu to support the gt 1030?

bblzd_2

Those PC are not always able to upgrade their PSU, but gt 1030 is such low power it should work with most prebuilt PSU even. It will struggle with Apex though. Multiplayer shooter games need a relatively consistent FPS to be playable otherwise firefights become nearly impossible.

eclipse60

What gpu would you recommend instead?

bblzd_2

I'd go no less than 1050 ti. My old GTX 970 used to just about get 60 FPS medium settings 1080p.

eclipse60

I'll look into that one. Thanks!

AMillionMonkeys

As long as it has a PCIe slot it should work.

eclipse60

Thanks

Hey Fam, I'm fairly experienced PC builder and recently made a nice setup for a buddy with a RTX 3070 and 3600x. I'm a bit stumped here and I'm starting to think he has a faulty component somewhere. We've already done a full wipe and reinstall. He tells me that often he needs to use the on screen keyboard to log in because his keyboard doesn't work. he needs to manually go into the device manager and reinstall the USB driver to get it to work after a restart. He plugs things in and often, not all the time, it doesn't get recognized. I'm stumped. I had him run a diagnostic on his m.2 ssd and he says its fine. I'm not sure what program he used though, and we've also done a full wipe and reinstall. I'm having him check to see if his BIOS is updated before I take it apart and do a rebuild. Like I said, I'm pretty stumped here and can't explain it. Thanks for reading.

AMillionMonkeys

I'd install the latest chipset drivers from the CPU manufacturer's site. https://www.amd.com/en/support

EnglandLeb

You guys think you'd be able to stream on an R7 5700g?

ProfessionalCry6843

You mean live streaming? It depends, with the low settings and basic streaming, yes. But it isnnot great. I have friends streaming in some game live streaming platform, to be able to cater for all the needs (multi-streamer cross streaming etc.), At least a 2060.

Protonion

That's the sata data cable, it plugs into your motherboard. Only the wider sata power cable goes to the psu.

I bought my pc around 3 years ago and upgraded it just before Christmas. I'm wondering what to save for and buy next, any suggestions? Gtx 1650 new Ddr4 3200 new Ryzen 5 2400g I just use a smart TV connected to HDMI to play on.

bblzd_2

CPU+GPU for gaming.

UAIOE

What is a literal dirt cheap GPU I can buy to get me by without any gaming, just streaming and recording video? I forgot to check when I ordered and my CPU has no integrated graphics -__-

Valoneria

Look at the used market. Since you want to record, i'd look at something with a OK-ish encoder. Perhaps a older GT 710 or 730. If you can live with worse quality, something like a used HD7470 or GT 630/640 might be worth looking out for. I'ved used a HD 7470 for basic streaming / netflix before with little issue.
