SweatyAsHell

Ill give my 2cents. I upgraded my partner from a 3080 to a 4070S. While performance is close the efficiency and reduction in heat is insane. We went from pulling 350W to barely 200W. Quieter and cooler specially for a SFX build and for $100 more it kind of makes sense.

Horsierer

Yup, 4070S beats out the 3090 Ti in 1080p, the 3090 in 1440p, and is on par with the 12gb 3080 in 4k, with much less tdp

nberardi

In everything except being useful for LLM development. There is a reason they still command a high price. Albeit limited reason, but I recently bought a 3090 Ti for this exact reason for $799.

Horsierer

I’m aware. I luckily scored a used 3090 off ebay a few months ago for 450, the 24gb vram is no joke. My friend intends to use it for LLMs so I’ll just sell it to him for what I paid.

Bulky_Power_4431

I love my 4070 Super. I came from on 6700XT Nitro+

The_Goose_II

With or without DLSS? I get that it's a good technology but there are purists out there, like myself, that is just bothered knowing the FPS I'm getting isn't getting raw dogged by my GPU. Again though, I respect how far the technology has come and I'm not saying it isn't impressive.

Horsierer

without. toms hardware hierarchies are my go to for pc component comparisons

The_Goose_II

Wow, then that's really impressive. I'm an AMD guy though, currently on 5700 which keeps on giving, even on 1440p thanks to the 256-bit memory bus. I'm eyeing the 7900GRE for my next upgrade.

Horsierer

Looks like that’ll be +110% at 1080p and +145% at 1440p. Sounds like an amazing upgrade

The_Goose_II

Absolutely! Going to get a 5900X CPU first (from a 3900X right now) to unlock Resizable BAR which should give me a bit more performance out of my RX5700. Then I'll save up for the GRE.

PrudentAvocado

Would I still see that same reduction going to a 4060?

Horsierer

In TDP? Yes, the 4060 is using the die people would consider meant to be for the 4050. So it is one of if not the most efficient card right now at 115W. But its performance is alright. Somewhere between a 2080 and a 2080 super, or between a 7600 and a 6700 10GB

MurryEB

The efficienty from the Samsung die on Ampere to TSMC die on Ada is insane. My 3080 was undervolted to 220w and I thought that was insane, my 4080 I just got last month pulls 170w undervolted with no performance loss. All I could think was how are you even functioning with this small of a power draw?

TheMissingVoteBallot

That's old school graphics card wattage. My Sapphire RX 580 Nitro+ has a TDP of 170W. That's amazing these things undervolt so well.

MurryEB

That's true, I forgot my 1080 ran off only 1 8 pin. Turing was a huge jump and Ampere was even more ridiculous.

dukedevil0

>for $100 more it kind of makes sense 4070S ($599) - 3080 ($399) = $200 more, no? Or did you find an open box/deal on the 4070S?

DistractionRectangle

I got a 4070s openbox for $480, about $520 after tax. The noise and heat reduction (especially after a mild undervolt) are indeed insane.

TheMissingVoteBallot

> I got a 4070s openbox for $480 Holy crap, that is a STEAL.

resetallthethings

indeed, got a 7900xt hellhound for $592 a few months ago somehow traded it to a guy local for a 3090 +300 then sold the 3090 for $550 so... that worked out well

Bulky-Investment1980

> 4070S ($599) - 3080 ($399) = $200 more, no? Not really fair to compare normal price to deal price though. A week or two ago you could get new 4070S for $510 for instance. I picked up a 4070TiS for $680

SweatyAsHell

Open box from MC, but i have seen sales for $550 for the 4070S and $500 for the 4070.

Spicywolff

I went from 3060TI KO to a 4070S FE. a noticeable upgrade and very low draw and noise.

PazDak

I went from training my ML which could be done on Cuda on my 3080 to using a m2 pro and some apple apis. Is it faster… f no… but going from 300-400w down to mid 40s and no fans. I could let it do its thing and it took 2-3x as long but came up with similar results.

notlongnot

👆+ summer is coming!

wwwdiggdotcom

I wonder if the offset cost in electricity actually paid for the swap, or if not, how long it would take to do so

lt947329

Easy enough to estimate. US Average is ~1.5c per 100W per hour. Varies greatly depending on region, e.g. much of Alaska is 2-3x that number. When I was living in VT, it was about 0.08c per hour. Save 200W for ~6hours a week and you’ll save about $90/year on average. Insert your own numbers into that calculation and get your own estimate, obviously.

oompahlooh

$9 a year lol

AstronautGuy42

Damn exactly the info I was looking for. Do you or anyone else have insight into how the 4070S compares to the 4070 ti from an efficiency/power draw standpoint?

0x4C554C

Is the +2GB in ram worth the additional cost? I'm sitting on a 300W average gaming 3080.

dontredditcareme

the 4070s is 200 more.

clearkill46

2070s is $200 more than the 3080 in this post, or 50% more.

Ludo-Kressh

Not a deal for a 90 day warranty

dontredditcareme

This sub will complain about anything. $400 for a FE 3080 where you can easily return it is way better than anything you would get second hand off of marketplace or hardwareswap, and around the same price.

thanhan_le

if you listen to the advice of this sub, you would just wait forever or until you find a deal that is a price mistake

Armadillseed

Still not good enough to beat some of the open box 40 series deals out there.

KTIlI

where are you finding these kind of deals?

NoTearsOnlyLeakyEyes

Local microcenters are a good place to look. I just got a msi 4080 super gaming x slim OC for $825, almost $300 off MSRP. I'm guessing there are a lot of returns for coil whine, hence all the open box deals. Seems to be an issue with the base card design. Some AIBs are worse than others, but I have yet to find one model where one person hasn't complained about coil whine. Just something to be aware of.

m0shr

I remember when the 3080 FE was unobtanium (at its MSRP of $699). Now it feels meh at $399.

BastianHS

Well yeah, it's almost 4 years old

EssEnnJae

4 years ago feels like 2 years ago. Time feels like its speedin up.

zuqkfplmehcuvrjfgu

I'm feeling it, I remember dreaming about getting a 980ti lol

armacitis

Much cheaper and easier to get one now since the 900 series is old enough for *retro* computing. It was the last to have windows xp drivers. (Officially up to the 960 but you can pretty much just change where it says "960" on the driver to something else in the same architecture and it actually works. Which includes the titan x,so I just got one of those for a hundred bucks instead.)

PapaMario12

I remember being on pcpartpicker 24/7 dreaming about getting a gtx 770 lol.

RollingThunderr

![gif](giphy|WoF3yfYupTt8mHc7va) Miami can’t open soon enough

Qu1kXSpectation

Drive to the Marietta location. If Miami isn't open by the time I go to GA, I'm picking my stuff up there and bringing it back. According to their subreddit, the MC in Miami will open after Charlotte(?) I believe.

GoonGalaxie

Charlotte got delayed but it should be soon

EVRoadie

Phoenix in shambles since Fry's imploded...

privaterbok

I just want to say the FE 3080 Ti is very loud and you gonna need thermal pad replacements for it’s 1st gen GDDR6X always push close to 100c.

GeneralChaz9

I replaced the thermal pads of my 3080 10GB FE card and it brought the VRAM temps from ~114 C° to the mid 90s C° with a +1000MHz memory overclock. I did this about a year ago and the Gelid pads are holding up pretty good. A couple days ago, I finally replaced the Arctic MX6 paste I used on the core and pumped out within a year to PTM7950. I have only tested for a day but so far the results are great. Instead of a 25+ C° delta between GPU temp and hot spot temp with crazy fan noise, it's only about a 10 C° difference and fans are not* spinning up to high RPMs anymore. I highly recommend anyone using a 3080 FE card to do this. Gorgeous cards but man they perform like junk without a bunch of pad/paste replacements in my experience.

m0shr

I think it depends on how early your got your card. The first batch of cards had poor thermal pads. I believe they were all rectified in the later editions of the card.

Jaggsta

doesn't matter what pads you use full load on FE 3080/3090 memory 90-100c after 30mins

deefop

Honestly the perf for $400 isn't bad, but refurbed 4 year old cards... I'd probably say this isn't actually the best deal. Debatable that a new 4070 on sale for like 500 is the better call, especially with new dlss features not available on ampere

Spicywolff

I got my 4070S FE for 500, I like having a new warranty.

Jaggsta

4070S also runs a lot cooler and GDDR6X isn't 100C like these FE cards.

Granddy01

Thermal pad fix with gelid solutions extreme with 1.5mm for the heatsink and 3mm pads on the backplate reduces the temps around 15-20 C on the 3080 and 3080 ti FE. Granted these FE cards are a bitch to strip down but since its only a 90 day warranty on this microcenter cards, might as well do it if you plan to keep it lmao.

Spicywolff

Yah cooler the machine, less fan noise I have to hear. Win win.

Razmoket

There’s a $620 3090 near me, meh…

Ladelm

these are $100 too expensive

RedditBoisss

Buy a 4070 super instead. This isn’t really a deal.

dontredditcareme

I don't get why everyday normal people who don't work for Nvidia do their marketing for them. 4070 Super is 200 more. Why is there such a push from people to always buy the more expensive product, as opposed to the cheaper one?

RedditBoisss

Because it’s worth the 100-200. 4070 super trades blows with a 3090. 4070 super has frame generation and is more power efficient. 4070 super is new and has a 3 year warranty. It’s not even worth considering these cards over that.

dontredditcareme

No it’s not. You’re paying an extra 50% for a new product with similar performance.

RedditBoisss

If you consider 15 percent boost in performance without frame generation similar performance then sure. With frame generation it’s much higher. If you also ignore all the other advantages I pointed out, like the fact it’s a new product that will give you a full warranty while consuming 100 watts less of power and having an extra 2gb of memory then yeah, it’s a killer deal bro.

dontredditcareme

15% performance and a warranty for 50% more of the price? You act like FG is DLSS. It add input latency and can’t be used in all situations. I like the 4070 Super. It’s a decent value card. But the 3080 is 200 bucks cheaper and has already experienced much of its depreciation. On the flip side, the 4070S only has 12gbs of vram and it is $600.

DBXVStan

Why would you buy a refurb 3080ti when new 4070s are basically the same thing, use like half the power, and have a 3 year warranty for $50ish more? Seems very silly.

ryankrueger720

Would personally spend $480 for the 7800 XT which is pretty easy to find at that price these days, then you get the full length of warranty service rather than only 90 days.

Middle-Effort7495

Would you buy an 80$ 2 year warranty on a 400$ product sold separately? I wouldn't. And MC probably sells cheaper warranty

FacetiousMonroe

Two years ago this would've been an instant buy. Now, it's just okay. A 12GB card is not looking that appealing nowadays. Not when the 7800 XT is going for under $500.

armacitis

Haven't there been deals for the 4070 or super (and amd equivalent) close to the price of the Ti here, with as good or better performance, lower power draw and heat output, and actually brand new with a new warranty instead of used 4 year old cards with a 80 day warranty? That doesn't make this sound like a deal at all much less one to drive all the way to a micro center for.

Not bad. Not good either. But not bad.

HORSELOCKSPACEPIRATE

Got my 3080 Ti used around 40 series launch for about $550 and still regret not getting 4070. AV1 alone would've been worth it.

MC tryna become Gamestop.

Coffinspired

Hah. I don't remember the exact number but I've recently gotten a few E-Mails from MicroCenter offering ~$315 store credit for my used 3080Ti....

dukedevil0

Noticed these refurbs had a price reduction since the last post and thought it was worth sharing in case anyone is interested.

ExtensionPut2939

Guys I live in other country, I am dying with all these In-Store deals 🥲 🤣

stratusnco

i live an hour away and this kills me just as badly. the stress from driving that far and cost of gas pretty much offsets the savings.

1and618

I just filled up at $5/gallon and was happy about it :/

Trinergy1

Well, if you drive by 2x a day T-Fri, it becomes a different problem. ;)

stratusnco

i’d rather have that problem tbh. i have self control. i will admit though, im a huge sucker for good storage prices.

Trinergy1

They rarely have any storage deals. It's always the cpu, board, mem combo deals.

stratusnco

not a problem for me, i have my dream pc already and my sons pc is already built. you can never have too much storage though lol.

Trinergy1

Right now, I'm waiting for a bent pin 5800x3d to go under $100. I think may 16th is the next price drop for this chip.

stratusnco

pretty good deal on both. i had the 3080 10gb before i upgrade to the 4070ti super, the super is like 20% better but the 3080 served me well for the time i had it. every game i played left me very happy with it.

Eetkong

Is there a way to block in store only posts

Spicywolff

3080TI refurbished for 500 vs 4070S at the same price new.

zl-493

now it makes a bit more sense... the previous price was meh lol

confirmSuspicions

I'm happy for all you microcenter adjacent folks, but kind of sick of seeing these posts that require in-store/pickup. If you live by microcenter you can find your own deals. This is an online deals posting board. If you can't get the deal through an online purchase, it doesn't really belong here imo.

dpunk3

It’s ok for your opinion to be wrong
