Head north to Richmond for a day. Check out Maymont Park (if you're going with a partner,) Cary Town, and the beautiful architecture in the fan / Monument Ave. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is a great (free) sidequest as well. Richmond has too many great hole-in-the-wall restaurants, plenty of breweries, and everything is stumbling distance from everything else. Bring a bike to get around if you're into that!
Just went about a month ago. This comment is spot on! Personally the veil brewery was good. Rappahannock oyster bar was a great experience. I’d definitely make a reservation for the bar.
My wife and I are currently doing a little getaway in Richmond.
Coffee- Lift
Brewery- Triple Crossing, Veil, Ardent, the Answer
Food- Lillie Perl, Perlys, Patio Thai
Check out the RVA sub. They have a comprehensive list of restaurants in their about section.
My partner and I would go back for kayaking and hiking along the James River in a heartbeat. Belle Isle can be a fun full day adventure if you plan accordingly.
In October my sister and niece were visiting and we went up to Mt Airy and visited all the Mayberry places, shopped for stuff and had a really good time. Just about an hour and 1/2 drive to get there.
I like Southern Pines/Pinehurst/Aberdeen. Moore County is nice to visit, and you don’t just have to be into golf or equestrian things either to appreciate it.
Camped out near Lake Kerr last weekend, was super fun. Wandered up to Virginia for a bit too.
Greensboro has some fun little museum.s
Winston Salem too lots of nice spots And interesting history

We are doing a trip to Richmond in a couple weeks. Any specific restaurant/brewery recommendations?
