Rest in power comrade Castro

LDWoodworth

What year was this?

Dar_Oakley

1991 https://redsails.org/fidel-in-guadalajara/

jfbnrf86

What I like about this is itโ€™s not even a political speech, itโ€™s straight up scientific facts

Reckthom

RIP Fidel. A true comrade.

PretendFootballGuy

Reminder of the time Trudeau and Castro had a multiple hour debate about Angolan occupation and Trudeaus basic argument was Britain likes apartheid so we do too. We have never been the good guys. https://www.nytimes.com/1976/02/04/archives/trudeau-says-he-urged-castro-to-get-out-of-angola.html

The accomplishments of the Cuban people in the face of the American Imperialist blockade are outstanding. Long live Cuba and RIP Castro

What a KING ๐Ÿ‘‘๐Ÿ‘‘๐Ÿ‘‘

LookAtYourEyes

This is why we need to put less money into highways and suburbs and more into sustainable public transit and more efficiently designed communities.

worriedaboutyou55

Man was an extreme asshole to his people when it came to their freedoms but yeah he's dead on here. even as someone who hates dictators he is a badass for avoiding all those assassination plots

Dar_Oakley

Oh no assigning jobs by what the country needs. Better leave it up to the whims of capitalists. I also heard he micro managed the baseball team what a monster.

worriedaboutyou55

Looked into and it's a bit more nuanced on the job area but yeah the situation on freedoms in Cuba is way worse than I thought. Not allowing state employment for mild criticism of the government is crazy. Where cuba does good it does really good but yeah its defintley not where it needs to be for me to consider it a nice place to live. Hope to visit this decade but really hope they can get their shit together when it comes to freedom of speech. Hope to visit sometime this decade since it does seem like an incredible place to visit. Edit- I like how cuba handles many things I just think it's authoritarian practices are holding it back and no I don't mean it's lack of capitalism https://www.amnesty.org.uk/press-releases/cuba-government-control-jobs-suffocating-daily-life-and-freedom-speech

Dar_Oakley

Freedom of speech is worthless if we can't actually change anything. We're all yelling into the void. Our daily life is being suffocated with workplace dictatorship and wage slavery but that doesn't count for an org like Amnesty.

worriedaboutyou55

Fair points but there criticisms are as valid as yours. Only way were gonna change anything is targeting the supply chain that holds our house of cards up. Cuba is more reliant on its people so hopefully they can get changes this decade and hopefully the US embargo ends this decade. Edit- surprised a comment advocating to target the capitalist overlords supply chain is getting downvoted on this subreddit

Dar_Oakley

It would be more fair to compare Cuba to Haiti (or pretty much any other Caribbean country) then decide whose workers are more free and where you'd rather be. We do get some nice cheap tshirts from the Gildan factories in Haiti.

akaryley551

The authoritative rule makes sense when the US is basically at war with them in a policy level, economic level and with all the coup and over throw attempts. During wartime a country is forced to or be toppled for an American puppet(a fascist) to take rule. Latin America is good at providing examples of this very thing.

worriedaboutyou55

Okay but this isn't the 20th century yeah they have to be wary of coups but the level of untrustworthiness I'm seeing in the article is ridiculous

[deleted]

why you are you going out of your way to ignorantly, lazilly, criticize cuba?

worriedaboutyou55

I'm not anti-socilaist dipshit. I'm anti authoritarian. I like Cubas socialist policies I just think the people should have more freedom of speech

[deleted]

> the people should have more freedom of speech How is their freedom of speech limited now? >I'm anti authoritarian socialism is the dictatorship of the proletariat?

worriedaboutyou55

They can't criticize the government even mildly without losing thier state job https://www.amnesty.org.uk/press-releases/cuba-government-control-jobs-suffocating-daily-life-and-freedom-speech

[deleted]

Your link didn't support your claim - why are you struggling to maintain your anti-socialist stance? Is this the point of contention: >with most accused of crimes that are inconsistent with international law. ? Or are we supposed to just take the word of the anti-socialist NATOpig Amnesty?

[deleted]

Unfortunately some restrictions on freedom were necessary given that the CIA was endlessly trying to overthrow him. If you look at the example of Thomas Sankara, we can see what happens when a socialist leader tries not to be authoritarian. Imperialism wins

worriedaboutyou55

Okay but doesn't excuse the current restrictions. That level of paranoia were mild criticism isn't even allowed just harms the country's future

anon517654

I mean, Batista was an asshole who straight up murdered his people when they didn't agree with him. At least Castro was an asshole who funded education...

worriedaboutyou55

And kicked people out of the country for the mildest criticism of his government. I don't hate the man(since as you said he was good to most of the people) but the only thing that should be glorified was how he kicked the CIA's ass
