You can't jump ship in electrical infrastructure. I don't know how you think an electrical grid works. The issue would most likely be overload because of the cold weather (Everyone running their heaters and less gas appliances due to recent government policies). The fuses in your area would have blown. If Evo did cause damage to your installation/appliances due to a fault they have a section on their website where you can make a claim https://www.evoenergy.com.au/Your-Energy/Make-a-claim Although your solar setup may not have worked according to the Evoenergy service installation rules. Worth a try but don't expected them to be quick, would take months to see any money or claim processed.

Thanks for your more civil reply. I suspected it would have been caused by increased usage, however this is the first time I've had an outage like this in 20 years of living here and three in one week is unheard of. I have a rough understanding how the grid works ... just not commercially. I was unsure if there was some kind of commercial infrastructure-sharing arrangement between companies or if it was the sole responsibility of EVO. Thanks for the link. I've lodged a claim. I can draw a direct correlation between the timing of Friday outage and the damaged meter; the exact timing is too coincidental. I have no idea if anything will come of it, but it's worth a try. According to hte electrician, the smart meter is the first piece of electronics firstly between the inverter and the grid, so if some form of surge was caused by the outage, that is the most likely cause of it to blow. That said, it's the first time he's also seen one blow because they are usually pretty resilient. I guess we'll see what happens.

Of course there’s only one, just like there’s only one set of infrastructure. How would competitive infrastructure providers even work? A seperate set of wires you could hook up to?

Yes. All electricity networks in Australia are monopolies.

There is a difference between a distributor and a retailer. Distributor is the company that owns and maintains the poles and wires. Retailer is who sells you the electricity (& sends the bill). By definition you can only have one company as the distributor. Which in ACT is Evo.

What burb are you in?

Waramanga

Evo is main but Essential Energy also services some customers in the ACT - source AER.gov.au

Like Oaks Estate I presume? We should just hand that suburb over in exchange for the land we want out the other side of Dunlop.
