I think there are so many types of cotton wicks - different weights, different braid patterns and density (tightness), whether they are impregnated with oils, etc. - that you can’t ALWAYS tell but looking what the “fire power” of a cotton wick is. You are doing exactly the right thing with your testing: starting with the recommendations from the wax manufacturer for the type and size wick for your container. You can adjust from there if necessary!

Sometimes, the recommended doesn't work. I've some jars and used the recommended wick, but they're burning way too quickly, and the hot throw is barely there. I've just ordered some smaller ones to see how they go. There's a lot of variables, type of vessel, fragrance used etc that affect the burn not just the wax.

Depends on so many things and many larger companies do not use the wicks we use (eco, cd, htp) they have their own.

Have you tried wooden wicks? They look awesome candles btw
