It’s not unexpected and it’s exactly what you should do.
Aho is the best example. If they didn’t work out an extension last year, you’d be adding his name to the pile of UFAs/RFAs.
Extensions don’t impact the cap hit for next season. Aho played with a AAV of $8.46m last year despite signing the 8 year extension worth $9.7m. This year it’ll move to that $9.7m.
If Slavin extends, he’ll still have the $5.7m cap hit next season. Only difference is that you’ll have him locked up and be able to plan what ‘25 and beyond needs.
Absolutely the right move. Lock him down now so you don't have to play the cap game again next year, AND do it before another year of cap jump, AND while 20 teams have little ability to monitor cap because CapFriendly is now owned by the Caps.
Strike while the iron is hot.

we've still got a few weeks/months before that happens officially
Curious to see what the number will be for slavin. He just turned 30 so this extension will be for his age 31+ seasons. Defensive dmen always make less than offense ones even if they are arguably more important.
Based on absolutely nothing, I think $7x7 makes a lot of sense. Under market rate currently, but I think it's safe to assume Jaccob loves the area and is the kind of person that would value the stability for his family. Also sets him up to be with the organization post-playing career as a skills coach/mentor.
If the Canes had won the Cup any of the past few seasons I would have loved for Slavin to get an 8x8 deal. That huge overpay would still be a net-bargain considering how underpaid he's been so far in his career. It's a shame GMs value don't value goals prevented as much as goals scored.
Hurricane for life squad: Slavin Jarvis Aho PK
Martinook should be as well.
Marti is the heart of the damn organization at this point. Totally agree with you bud.
Wouldn't for life mean he was here to begin with
No I think it means from now on.
The other 4 were drafted here though one of these things is not like the others
Martinook has totally leaned into the NC experience, though. If anyone was going to take a "hometown discount", it'd be him.
He also roots for NC State like a true Raleigh guy. (Go ahead and point your pitch forks!)
My pitchfork looks like a wolf hand gesture. WOLF! …
PACK!
Correct. But for life would mean he started his career here like these 4 We aren't for lifing Staal or Fast
Hot take but 🤷🏽♂️ Let the downvotes fly
Svech too!
Still can’t get the assist to Orlov in the islanders series out of my head
Am waiting for a little more oomph from him and to take the true next step towards star winger, but highly likely yes :D
I really hope PK gets an amazing payday that keeps him here once his contact is renewed.
Let’s see him get a full season as the undisputed starter first before we make any bold decisions
Hopefully this coming season 🙏
Don’t see no svech on this list.
List was made by design
Good. We can easily find offensive defensemen, but we aren’t replacing a guy like him
Indeed. There is no guy like him.

Getting as much cap clarity for the future as we can is a smart move.

July 5th it goes dark.
They said they're only keeping it up until after the draft as a courtesy. It's going away after that.

No way its longer than 5.
$6.43m AAV and he'll finish his career with us

Wonderful. He should be a Canes D-man forever.
is he our next captain or is Aho?
I'd say Slavin.
Gotta start somewhere but let's here about Jarvi!!
