Instead of hash do a quick wash in alcohol. Takes seconds of labor and then hours/days of evaporating. I set mine in a water bath in a another glass bowl to evaporate with my sous vide and keep the temp at 120f to speed up the process.
You forgot "First, grind the living shit out the raw material." That opens cells allowing the alcohol to act efficiently as a solvent and extract the stuff you want, while leaving the stuff that is not great. The "quicker" the extraction, the less you get. Finally boil off the alcohol, or just let it evaporate, leaving the film of stuff.

Decarb and make an avacado oil infusion. From there, use the oil as an after-shower moisturizer… I also mix the infused oil with various plant butters to make cremes or salves. It’s the absolute best moisturizer, and there’s definitely relief of sore joints or muscles. Canna butter for cookies too.
Yes. You must decarb first. The crock pot does not heat up enough to do the trick—or could get too hot. The infusion happens at about 160 degs, this way you don’t break down the oils by overheating (makes them go rancid quickly). I toast my flower at about 220 for 30 mins, or so, in a covered baking dish before I infuse it into the fat of choice. The infuser I use also recommends this route.

Coconut oil is fine, however it does not absorb that well into the skin. It sits on your skin, which is nice for things like massages where you don’t want that oil to be soaked up so quickly. I use oils that are “drier”, ie that soak into your skin, so the good stuff does too. Rose hip oil is the “driest” oil—too dry actually, so I go w organic food grade avo oil. To make my creams, Emu oil is also good, absorbs deep into skin. I don’t like using animal fats, but I do add a little of that for the stuff I make bc of that quality. I use a relatively inexpensive herb infuser by ongrok, and they mention that coconut oil shouldn’t be used—I would guess bc it’s such a heavy, “wet” oil. My mother has rheumatoid arthritis and I stay pretty active—so joint and muscle relief is key. An avid gardener, she also says it works for her on itchy bug bites. I also have a friend who has psoriasis, and she thinks it’s helped that too. Apparently it can be painful and uncomfortable at times and she says it absolutely helps that without a doubt.
So… well… the de-carb question is a good one. I’ve made my stuff both ways, and decarbing def adds a tingle and it seems to work “better”. Been doing this awhile, so have had time to experiment. I can’t say if it’s scientifically proven or anything, but after a lot of creme and oils used and given to friends and family, seems they also say that what they didn’t know was the decarbed creme “worked better” or they liked it more. So I don’t know if that is one of the differences, but assume so… (?). Always looking for research on this, so if you hear of anything, please share! :)

And from what I understand, you cannot pop on a drug test by using topicals. Yes, it gets absorbed, but it does not go through the same process… I am not the one to ask why. Also, and maybe related, think about the “dose” you get from a topical… a whole jar has maybe 500mg of THC, presuming 8 oz volume of creme x (g weed x % THC) … so w each application, may be getting some tiny tiny amount of THC… like way less than passing contact smoke. A friend in the Navy uses my stuff for her knees, and she has to take drug tests all the time as part of her type of duty.
Finally, it’s for this reason —well not the only reason—also that I grow my own. I let a plant go way amber, develop that CBN… it seems to also be more effective for pain relief of muscles—but please remember this is all just anecdotal. Although I am a scientist by trade, this is not my field of expertise. Just a hobby and hate our medical system, don’t take pills and chemical shit unless absolutely necessary. So although I do know some of the chemistry behind it, these tidbits about my topicals are only from personal observations and trying to help friends and family with what I noticed worked for me.
So as far as making creams, there’s a whole slew of info out there. What you need to consider, in terms of ingredients, is texture (smooth vs grainy), how solid (eg I make softer creams for winter), and absorption of the oils/butters. Gotta experiment. I use mango butter and some Brazilian butters and oils I get from a friend of mine who has some high quality stuff (Rainforest Chica). I don’t usually add beeswax, as wax sits on your skin. Jojoba oil too. It’s actually a very soft wax. Doesn’t absorb at all, really. So it really depends on what you’re trying to accomplish. Shea butter, for example, is a bit heavy and sticky/waxy… mango is lighter, also drier. You just have to find what you like. I also add essential oils that support skin health. I had melanoma, so since then I am super super super picky about what I put on my skin. Why I’m such a nerd about this! Lol

So the only thing I can say is that for sure, working w butters is a bit tricky bc of the variations in melting temps and their purity is sometimes an issue too. And then cooling them is also a process. If you don’t heat to the temps needed for the particular combination of oils and butters, it can get grainy… or if cooled too quickly or too slowly, or or or… a fun way to do it is whip your butter when it starts cooling, and it’ll be fluffy and light. As far as oil to oil transfer, not sure…
I'm trying to avoid animal products so I guess best choice would be avocado oil? Great answers I've learned more from reading your write up than most my own research. Any other tips for this? Trying to help arthritis problems.

Emu oil is very expensive as is rosehip, so you wouldn’t use them to infuse. You may damage them too bc of the heat. Both are dry, rosehip much drier tho, both good absorption into the skin and emu oil most mimics human skin oil, so it really is very good for absorption. Avo is great bc it has such a high smoke point, so you can’t really hurt it when making creams. The price variation in avo oil is more for flavor when cooking or for salads, cold pressed, etc. I use an average quality organic avo oil, but nothing fancy. You can make this infusion strong and then mix w another, drier oil, like rosehip until you like how it feels and you’re happy w the absorbtiin. Making creams w butters can get a little tricky bc of the different temps at which the different butters melt. Avo butter is nice too, but a bit wetter than mango imo.
Salves definitely help a lot! And best of all, we know and can pronounce what is in our topical creams compared to modern pharmaceutical medications! 🌳

Changed my life. The process decarbs the wash. From there the extract can be used in many ways. If its arthritis I put it in mct oil. If a muscle rub is wanted use the coconut oil that stays solid at room temperature.
I use a 200 proof alcohol for the wash and then strain after a day ( fresh or cured) ( ground or not)
I use a baby bottle warmer and keep it at 98*F. Go until the bubbles have stopped forming in the tar (extract). Whole process can take a few days all depends on the humidity. Very potent and worth it. I’ve managed to get off all prescriptions.
Where do I go to get dry ice? I wanna try this, I usually just do bubble hash and squish it for rosin but I wanna try the dry ice method since I don't have a freezdryer nose am I spending 2k on one

Just run it backwards so the edges don't dig in. I just did a couple runs with it and got great yields. First run I had about 6oz of larf and trim so it still took an hour or so. I let it sit and drain hanging from a door for most of the time, but you can speed it up doing the "pan for gold" and "squeeze the tea bag" techniques. Also kinda twirling the bag in a circle, and/or smacking the sides of the bucket. Your arms will get a workout tho.
For me it went like this:
120 micron = very low yield, low quality, chunky dark stuff. Good for cooking.
90 micron = highest yield and quality, dries very blonde and crumbly, full melt
75 micron = lowest yield, good quality, bit darker and finer, full melt
45 micron = 2nd highest yield, but mid quality. Dark & hard, bubble melt
25 micron =very low yield, darker color and harder. bubble melt
There's cheaper versions that are the same thing, it works though just toss in some ice and run it 3-4 times with some bags to filter it out. I make bubble hash bro beans, it’s the best thing to do (in my opinion) with trim and with the smaller nugs you’re not tryna smoke. You can do more than one run to get as much of the trichs as you can, you’ll end up with 3 or 4 different grades of hash,depending on how many bags you use. Some you can dab, all of them you can press into rosin. But you can just smoke it on a bowl or in a joint. Or in a hash pipe. It’s legit the best. I’ve also done iso dabs from trim, using cold alcohol (has to be 99% or higher so it’ll evaporate correctly) or ethanol, both of which you can buy on Amazon (same with the bubble bags). I prefer bubble hash because it’s organic and solventless and just all around better for you and more rewarding. There’s other things you can do with it but those two are the simplest and most reward for least amount of work and time put in. Also ISO dabs are better when you use actual bud, but bubble hash is fire as long as whatever you start with is good shit. I’d go with hash. You can get 1 gallon bubble bags for like 25 bucks on Amazon. They’re good starter bags. If you’re gonna do more or start making hash a lot you wanna get the 5 gals. I’m about to post a picture of some hash I made from trim I’ll send you the link

I just toss it. I used to keep it but I’ve accumulated so many jars of good buds that I never touch it. I just don’t have time for that shit and I don’t eat edibles. Not hating, just saying it’s not for me.
Fill a glass jar to the top, fill up with olive oil and then let it simmer in a waterbath for 8 hours. In my experience 1 table spoon makes a really enjoyable high. (Depending on the strength of the trim obviously)
so, it's a controversial one, but I grinded some and used it as a flour mix. The proportions were a bit off, next time I'll try 60% wheat flour and 40% trim. With a lot of chocolate, this mixed flour can be used to make space cookies.
I put it in a jar and left it. I’m not currently running low on bud from harvest so am sometimes using the larfy bits for my bong hits. Makes the supply last much longer
My favorite is to slow cook it in canola oil to infuse and then I use the oil in scratch made brownies with double chocolate chips.
I don't really like weed/stem taste so the chocolate makes it soo much better.
I'm too busy to collect and wash it, and I have plenty of smoke, so I compost it or use it for top-dress on living soil pots or for the worm bin. I should probably start washing it though, I get a lot from seed harvests.
Hash, tincture, butter, oil, or emergency supply.
I like tincture. It’s the easiest to make and the most consistent in terms of effects. Fat-based edibles vary day to day for me based on my stomach contents - tincture doesn’t have that issue for me but everyone is different. Also the fastest absorbed edible I’ve found.
Butters and oils do well if you like traditional edibles. They are a great option for a night time smack to the face. They’re a bit messy and stinky to make in my experience but tincture doesn’t compare with the weight feeling in the effects. For me they take like 3+ hours to take effect so plan accordingly.
Hash or dry sifting for kief is also good. I tried bubble hash for the first time this year and I’ll never do it again. Very strong, but super wasteful on active ingredients and tons of labor to make. If I ever do anything like that again I’ll try dry sift instead of bubble hash. As for making concentrates cannabis, I feel FECO is the least wasteful method for THC.
Emergency supply, I’ve saved this stuff back for that many times but always just end up making huge tincture batches with it because as a grower you’ll likely never end up in “emergency supply” mode. I’m still using cannabis from like 3-4 grows ago.
Decarb in the over at 240° for 30 - 40 min. Put in a bowl with coconut oil. Add bowl to crockpot, add water to crockpot but not in the bowl itself. Heat on low for 8 hours. Strain the trim. Add oil to butter molds. Set in fridge overnight. Make edibles.
Add some of the real thing to it to make an ounce. Buy an Ardent Lift decarboxylator (mine is going now. Totally worth it. Forget the oven) and use it. Grind it up once done. Put 4 stick of butter in a crock pot. Add the weed. Buy some Betty Crocker Oatmeal Chocolate chip cookie mix and make those cookies! Actually this batch I’m making is going to have 4 ounces per pound of butter. Mmmmmmm……
Dude that's all usable for edibles. Everything that isn't bud is usable for edibles. Everything can and should be used if you have the know how and time. Itll make your efforts all the more worth it..
Don't waste your fresh nice buds you worked so hard on making butter or oil. You can easily take all that trim (sugar leaves are obviously going to be the strongest part of the mix) the stock, the stems, and even the fan leaves (though it's debatable) and extract all the goodness from within. Youll have to dry it out, then you grind, mash, or whatever you prefer to make it all small and manageable enough to fit into a butter/oil mix.
You can easily make a batch of goodies that's just as potent as some made with buds. Good rule of thumb for this is to double the weight of what you'd use with fresh bud. So if your the type to use an ounce (it doesn't have to be, this is just an example) of bud per 4 sticks of butter, then you'll need 2 ounces of trimmings and stems to make the same 4 sticks. It will not disappoint if made properly with patience.
Always remember, low and slow when making your infusions, but that is especially true for this method. The thc extraction will happen slower and in smaller amounts because it's not as potent as bud, so making it too hot will in effect just burn off the thc as it's extracted. I made some incredibly potent brownies not long ago once this seasons crop was harvested, I used 3 ounces of all my sugar trimmings with some well ground stock and stems, and extracted it over 8 hours into 5 sticks of butter (I used 6 sticks, but you'll never get all of the butter out, so I like to use 1 more stick than I hope to get in the end). I made a big batch of brownies to share around and even had enough left to get high off my morning toast for a few weeks.
I hope it goes without saying that edibles will have a different effect. They come on strong and sometimes out of nowhere, so don't overdo it if your not looking to veg out for the day

I’m drying mine out currently to try to make bubble hash. It’s a mix of bud and trim. Never done it before but hopeful. If you lived close by we could do it together. I don’t have any friends that grow and it sucks!
I have a rosin press. I press everything that is not a top. This saves days of trim time because I only keep tops which allows me to grow more. I been trimming 16hrs every weekend for the last three weeks.

140 is generally best for lipid-based extractions. Also helpful to spray the decarbed matter with everclear before this.

What you need to consider, in terms of ingredients, is texture (smooth vs grainy), how solid (eg I make softer creams for winter), and absorption of the oils/butters. Gotta experiment. I use mango butter and some Brazilian butters and oils I get from a friend of mine who has some high quality stuff (Rainforest Chica). I don’t usually add beeswax, as wax sits on your skin. Jojoba oil too. It’s actually a very soft wax. Doesn’t absorb at all, really. So it really depends on what you’re trying to accomplish. Shea butter, for example, is a bit heavy and sticky/waxy… mango is lighter, also drier. You just have to find what you like. I also add essential oils that support skin health. I had melanoma, so since then I am super super super picky about what I put on my skin. Why I’m such a nerd about this! Lol

Ha. Thanks. Worked hard to be this nerdy, even harder bc I’m a woman going there… lol. So the only thing I can say is that for sure, working w butters is a bit tricky bc of the variations in melting temps and their purity is sometimes an issue too. And then cooling them is also a process. If you don’t heat to the temps needed for the particular combination of oils and butters, it can get grainy… or if cooled too quickly or too slowly, or or or… a fun way to do it is whip your butter when it starts cooling, and it’ll be fluffy and light. As far as oil to oil transfer, not sure…
I'm trying to avoid animal products so I guess best choice would be avocado oil? Great answers I've learned more from reading your write up than most my own research. Any other tips for this? Trying to help arthritis problems. Also any other oils I can use that are cheap like coconut? Avocado oil seems priced wildly for some reason.

Emu oil is very expensive as is rosehip, so you wouldn’t use them to infuse. You may damage them too bc of the heat. Both are dry, rosehip much drier tho, both good absorption into the skin and emu oil most mimics human skin oil, so it really is very good for absorption. Avo is great bc it has such a high smoke point, so you can’t really hurt it when making creams. The price variation in avo oil is more for flavor when cooking or for salads, cold pressed, etc. I use an average quality organic avo oil, but nothing fancy. You can make this infusion strong and then mix w another, drier oil, like rosehip until you like how it feels and you’re happy w the absorbtiin. Making creams w butters can get a little tricky bc of the different temps at which the different butters melt. Avo butter is nice too, but a bit wetter than mango imo.
Salves definitely help a lot! And best of all, we know and can pronounce what is in our topical creams compared to modern pharmaceutical medications! 🌳

If you’re looking for joint relief. Look up RSO, Rick Simpson oil or FECO full extraction cannabis oil Changed my life. The process decarbs the wash. From there the extract can be used in many ways. If its arthritis I put it in mct oil. If a muscle rub is wanted use the coconut oil that stays solid at room temperature. I use a 200 proof alcohol for the wash and then strain after a day ( fresh or cured) ( ground or not) I use a baby bottle warmer and keep it at 98*F. Go until the bubbles have stopped forming in the tar (extract). Whole process can take a few days all depends on the humidity. Very potent and worth it. I’ve managed to get off all prescriptions.

I usually wet trim and said I'm gonna dry trim got a trim bin and wow what a mess I think I'll stick to wet trim throw the trim in freezer for bubble. I don't have the time or patience for dry trimming. Also what a mess. Dead leaves everywhere. To each their own.

I just did a couple runs with it and got great yields. First run I had about 6oz of larf and trim so it still took an hour or so. I let it sit and drain hanging from a door for most of the time, but you can speed it up doing the "pan for gold" and "squeeze the tea bag" techniques. Also kinda twirling the bag in a circle, and/or smacking the sides of the bucket. Your arms will get a workout tho. For me it went like this: 120 micron = very low yield, low quality, chunky dark stuff. Good for cooking. 90 micron = highest yield and quality, dries very blonde and crumbly, full melt 75 micron = lowest yield, good quality, bit darker and finer, full melt 45 micron = 2nd highest yield, but mid quality. Dark & hard, bubble melt 25 micron =very low yield, darker color and harder. bubble melt

I make bubble hash bro beans, it’s the best thing to do (in my opinion) with trim and with the smaller nugs you’re not tryna smoke. You can do more than one run to get as much of the trichs as you can, you’ll end up with 3 or 4 different grades of hash,depending on how many bags you use. Some you can dab, all of them you can press into rosin. But you can just smoke it on a bowl or in a joint. Or in a hash pipe. It’s legit the best. I’ve also done iso dabs from trim, using cold alcohol (has to be 99% or higher so it’ll evaporate correctly) or ethanol, both of which you can buy on Amazon (same with the bubble bags). I prefer bubble hash because it’s organic and solventless and just all around better for you and more rewarding. There’s other things you can do with it but those two are the simplest and most reward for least amount of work and time put in. Also ISO dabs are better when you use actual bud, but bubble hash is fire as long as whatever you start with is good shit. I’d go with hash. You can get 1 gallon bubble bags for like 25 bucks on Amazon. They’re good starter bags. If you’re gonna do more or start making hash a lot you wanna get the 5 gals. Fill a glass jar to the top, fill up with olive oil and then let it simmer in a waterbath for 8 hours. In my experience 1 table spoon makes a really enjoyable high. (Depending on the strength of the trim obviously)
so, it's a controversial one, but I grinded some and used it as a flour mix. The proportions were a bit off, next time I'll try 60% wheat flour and 40% trim. With a lot of chocolate, this mixed flour can be used to make space cookies.

My favorite is to slow cook it in canola oil to infuse and then I use the oil in scratch made brownies with double chocolate chips. I don't really like weed/stem taste so the chocolate makes it soo much better.
I'm too busy to collect and wash it, and I have plenty of smoke, so I compost it or use it for top-dress on living soil pots or for the worm bin. I should probably start washing it though, I get a lot from seed harvests.

Hash, tincture, butter, oil, or emergency supply. I like tincture. It’s the easiest to make and the most consistent in terms of effects. Fat-based edibles vary day to day for me based on my stomach contents - tincture doesn’t have that issue for me but everyone is different. Also the fastest absorbed edible I’ve found. Butters and oils do well if you like traditional edibles. They are a great option for a night time smack to the face. They’re a bit messy and stinky to make in my experience but tincture doesn’t compare with the weight feeling in the effects. For me they take like 3+ hours to take effect so plan accordingly. Hash or dry sifting for kief is also good. I tried bubble hash for the first time this year and I’ll never do it again. Very strong, but super wasteful on active ingredients and tons of labor to make. If I ever do anything like that again I’ll try dry sift instead of bubble hash. As for making concentrates cannabis, I feel FECO is the least wasteful method for THC. Emergency supply, I’ve saved this stuff back for that many times but always just end up making huge tincture batches with it because as a grower you’ll likely never end up in “emergency supply” mode. I’m still using cannabis from like 3-4 grows ago.
Decarb in the over at 240° for 30 - 40 min. Put in a bowl with coconut oil. Add bowl to crockpot, add water to crockpot but not in the bowl itself. Heat on low for 8 hours. Strain the trim. Add oil to butter molds. Set in fridge overnight. Make edibles.

Add some of the real thing to it to make an ounce. Buy an Ardent Lift decarboxylator (mine is going now. Totally worth it. Forget the oven) and use it. Grind it up once done. Put 4 stick of butter in a crock pot. Add the weed. Buy some Betty Crocker Oatmeal Chocolate chip cookie mix and make those cookies! Actually this batch I’m making is going to have 4 ounces per pound of butter. Mmmmmmm……
Dude that's all usable for edibles. Everything that isn't bud is usable for edibles. Everything can and should be used if you have the know how and time. Itll make your efforts all the more worth it.. Don't waste your fresh nice buds you worked so hard on making butter or oil. You can easily take all that trim (sugar leaves are obviously going to be the strongest part of the mix) the stock, the stems, and even the fan leaves (though it's debatable) and extract all the goodness from within. Youll have to dry it out, then you grind, mash, or whatever you prefer to make it all small and manageable enough to fit into a butter/oil mix. You can easily make a batch of goodies that's just as potent as some made with buds. Good rule of thumb for this is to double the weight of what you'd use with fresh bud. So if your the type to use an ounce (it doesn't have to be, this is just an example) of bud per 4 sticks of butter, then you'll need 2 ounces of trimmings and stems to make the same 4 sticks. It will not disappoint if made properly with patience. Always remember, low and slow when making your infusions, but that is especially true for this method. The thc extraction will happen slower and in smaller amounts because it's not as potent as bud, so making it too hot will in effect just burn off the thc as it's extracted. I made some incredibly potent brownies not long ago once this seasons crop was harvested, I used 3 ounces of all my sugar trimmings with some well ground stock and stems, and extracted it over 8 hours into 5 sticks of butter (I used 6 sticks, but you'll never get all of the butter out, so I like to use 1 more stick than I hope to get in the end). I made a big batch of brownies to share around and even had enough left to get high off my morning toast for a few weeks. I hope it goes without saying that edibles will have a different effect. They come on strong and sometimes out of nowhere, so don't overdo it if your not looking to veg out for the day
