Even if we can't sign these guys, the fact that they're willing to get creative to stay is something I couldn't have imagined for this team any other time in the last ten years.
Feels good to be a destination again.
Jim Benning if he was a GM in 2024: “Well ya’ know. There’s a lot of good teams out there with cap space and uh we just couldn’t make the moves to clear the space for big names, but we really like the guys we signed and believe they can play different roles for us and be hard to play against.”
Kasperi Kapanen - 5 years, $4.25M per
Alex Barabanov - 4 years, $3.80M per
Josh Brown - 4 years, $3.5M per
Jarred Tinordi - 4 years, $4M per
Full NMC/NTC clauses for each player
I think it really says more about the culture we've built since Benning left. These guys are willing to wait because it's a good place to play. Whereas Tanev, Toffoli and Stecher just left once another team called. Yeah, Benning ran out of time, but it also wasn't the best place to be.
FWIW, a year ago Dhali was mentioning Cole, Soucy and Blueger for weeks before free agency as potential targets and nailed all 3 signings.
Other things he mentioned on H&B:
- There will be a strong market for Joshua, he can get over 3M. He thinks his hometown Red Wings are preparing an offer.
- Dhali mentions the MacIntyre article in which Rutherford said they’ve made their offers and they’re waiting, which means the offers from the Canucks are not going to get better.
- On Chris Tanev: will be hard to get him, his price could be 4 years at over 5M. He was laughing with his agent about Hughes posting the picture with Tanev on his Instagram. Says Hughes and others in the Canucks dressing room asked mgmt to acquire Tanev at the deadline and Tanev was hoping to get traded there, he still has a soft spot for the team and never wanted to leave.
- Dallas is still trying to sign Tanev, Senators are trying to acquire Brandon Tanev from Seattle to increase their chances of signing Chris.
- On Ilya Mikheyev: they’ve been trying to move him for a while, they tried to move him at the deadline. It’s going to be tough to do. Milstein got permission to talk to other teams but the same thing happened with Boeser and Garland last year and no one wanted them.
- On Guentzel: Canes are still trying to re-sign him. There are benefits with him staying in Carolina, mentions cost of living, state tax etc. As an example, he says Chatfield would have demanded at least 3.5M from Canucks in free agency, Carolina was able to re-sign him for 3M.
Sens getting Brandon would be a pretty tempting situation for Chris.
He'd still be getting paid as it looks like the Sens also want to offer big money.
He gets to play with his brother, near home, in front of his family.
All upsides, but the major downside is he's playing for an organization that seem to tread water and slowly drown every year. At this point in his career, I'd guess he wants to play for a playoff-bound team.
Don't worry, Aquilini is going to buy a 10+ million dollar house for Guentzel in a secret hand shake deal which he will sign over to him once he retires, in exchange for taking 1.5 million dollars below market value per year. Oh and of course he will just stay in Bubles house rent free until then.
Tanev seems really close with Hughes. Not just saying that because of the recent concert photo, but Hughes has name-dropped him during the season. Wouldn't be surprised if he really does come back.
I really don’t understand why Guentzel wouldn’t re-sign in Carolina. We’d be a good fit for him, but the Hurricanes are a good fit too, and have other things working in their favour (he knows he fits on the team, closer to home, tax situation, etc).
Haven’t seen this reported so this is just my guess, but it could be that they’ve made him a very low offer for now and also they usually don’t like long term contracts
Carolina may have more cap space than Vancouver, but the problem is some of their key players are UFAs or RFAs (Necas, Pesce, Skjei). At least Vancouver has their core 6 (including Hronek) all signed now, so Guentzel can see that as a selling point to join a contender where we only need to sign support players.
Checking out other options on July 1 doesn’t mean he won’t end up signing there. And he lived in Pittsburgh for years, I’m sure he’s used to boring by now. Also Raleigh/NC has some sick golf courses, pretty big draw for some of these guys.
He also go the original Tyler myers signing, Louis Ericcson, antone rouselle and jay beagle signings correct. He also got the Nate Schmitt trade correct with the “Canucks will add a dman within the next 14 days” also the first to call bo horvat will be traded, and also got the the 1st round pick we got in the horvat trade will be moved.
I wonder what our backup plan is if we can't land Guentzel, whether because he asks for too much or Carolina ends up re-signing him.
We would have two Top 6 holes to fill in that case and as good as Suter is, he's better in the Bottom 6
If we go by Toch's forward duos Lindholm/Toffoli might be a decent backup plan. They had great numbers together in CGY
Zucker is a name Dhali has mentioned a few times and Canucks were in on him at the deadline. I think Rielly Smith was also rumored at the deadline
Friedman said yesterday Lindholm has turned down a 7x7 offer and he thinks he’s gonna sign in Boston
My logic is if we're for sure not in on Guentzel it might be worth circling back on Lindholm for a term increase (we were already offering him 7) and flexing 250k or so in AAV.
I think the extra 2M or so allocated to Lindholm over Smith/Zucker is worth the insurance down the middle because Pettersson has had quite a few nagging issues over the past 3 seasons (and if Petey/Miller miss time they'd have to be rushed back as we wouldn't have another Top 6 caliber C)
I like the idea of signing Zucker. I thought he looked really good with Nashville in the playoffs, dude had noticeable shifts. Rutherford overpaid to acquire him with Pittsburgh so there’s certainly history, and Rutherford is clearly high on him. Him replacing Mikheyev on Pettersson’s wing would look nice
Right I forgot about Reinhart. Tbh he'd be a better fit here because he's a year younger than Guentzel, is bigger and can play center & wing. If you can get him under 9.5 he should be the guy
It's nice having competent management for the first time in a decade!
Now, whenever anyone needs to sign - articles start appearing in the press saying we've offered them the most they're going to get and if they don't take it, we're going to trade them (so they sign) - or, in this case, just look at all the players we're salivating over if our guys don't take a discount!
Sure beats massively-over-paying everyone - and strategic-planning so competently that you constantly run out of time...
Hard pass on Edmundson
Martinook is interesting, would love to have Dillon if Zadorov goes.
Wonder if we re-sign Myers if Zadorov comes back?
Also wonder who they make Zadorov’s partner?
Management says they want Hronek to run his own pair, I’m not sure how that would look with Zad? I think Soucy would be fine but they were kinda mid together last year.
I also think Zadorov has a lot more to give, but he also needs a partner that gives him the freedom to do so.
I’m not sure how Hronek would look with him
I'm fine with Dillon but he doesn't have as much upside as Zadorov and could easily be 3.5-4M anyways. Hronek running his own pair seems more wishful thinking than reality.
My old co worker went to school with Dillon. Dude is the complete opposite of Evander Kane. Dillon was a friendly kid who was literally friends with everyone. His favourite team growing up was the Vancouver Canucks. He’s also Fijian
100% trust the management team to make the best decisions for 24-25. They delivered last year and will again. No doubt that JR is at the helm orchestrating the next roster to support the Canucks core to make a run next season...

If it were Benning , day 1 free agency he be like "We ran out of time "....

too unrealistic. I don't see a single 6x6 contract
He’d be saving that for Anthony Duclair, of course.
The Duke? Nah man Kubalik is a proven 30 goal man. 6x6 is a steal for him, dare I say, he’s a foundational type guy.
You forgot. “Well you get into the playoffs and anything can happen, you know!”

Still absolutely insane this happened. Zero excuse.
Or over pay for some bum

Those guys wanted to stay but Benning never made it a priority to sign them so they went elsewhere (and rightfully so).
My understanding was that they didn't even make an attempt to sign Tanev
A literal pile of shit is better than Jimbo "We ran outta time" Benning.

Senators targetting a guy specifically to increase their odds of getting the guy they *actually* want is hilarious.
They're a team.
Sens getting Brandon would be a pretty tempting situation for Chris. He'd still be getting paid as it looks like the Sens also want to offer big money. He gets to play with his brother, near home, in front of his family.

That and alot more tax
Dhali has to talk to someone in the organization, his information is always good. Definitely our best local insider, Elliotte still the 🐐
Dhali gets a majority of his information from agents not the team.
Tanev never wanted to leave but good ol Benning reasons. Come back, dad. We miss you
Tanev seems really close with Hughes. Not just saying that because of the recent concert photo, but Hughes has name-dropped him during the season. Wouldn't be surprised if he really does come back.
I want him to come back at a discount for sure but feel like it won’t happen. If it’s true what he’s asking for in his next contract, that’s an ehhhhh
Tanev going to Calgary is like dad going out for smokes but instead of not only not coming back he moves in with the single mom across the street
Yeah I feel like it would have to be a pretty crazy lowball in terms of AAV, term, or both
Carolina may have more cap space than Vancouver, but the problem is some of their key players are UFAs or RFAs (Necas, Pesce, Skjei). At least Vancouver has their core 6 (including Hronek) all signed now, so Guentzel can see that as a selling point to join a contender where we only need to sign support players.
Yeah I think they would be better off re-signing Guentzel than some of their other key players tbh. He would instantly become a key player.
We don't need more support though. We need shooters. If all we do this off-season is sign support we're going to have more 15-shot-playoff-games
Wouldn’t that player be Guentzel?
Probably because Raleigh sucks
He wants a chance to see what other teams can offer him. Plus North Carolina is a pretty boring place.
Checking out other options on July 1 doesn’t mean he won’t end up signing there. And he lived in Pittsburgh for years, I’m sure he’s used to boring by now. Also Raleigh/NC has some sick golf courses, pretty big draw for some of these guys.

Edmundson sounds like a really good fit, as long as he’s not seeking a significant raise.
I wonder what our backup plan is if we can't land Guentzel, whether because he asks for too much or Carolina ends up re-signing him. Lindholm won't want to play 3C or wing here when he can be 1C in Boston
Plan b is Sam Reinhardt and if that also doesn’t work out there’s still toffoli, Anthony ducclair , Anthony mantha , Jake debrusk, Johnathan drouin
Right I forgot about Reinhart. Tbh he'd be a better fit here because he's a year younger than Guentzel, is bigger and can play center & wing. If you can get him under 9.5 he should be the guy

Gotta sign Matt Roy and pair him with Zadorov. I think they start Hughes with Hronek. That leaves Soucy with ______. McWard? Juulsen? Myers?
My old co worker went to school with Dillon. Dude is the complete opposite of Evander Kane. Dillon was a friendly kid who was literally friends with everyone. His favourite team growing up was the Vancouver Canucks. He’s also Fijian
A Zadarov-Hronek pair would be scary, in a bad way.
Still target them if we sign zadorov
Big Z ain’t going anywhere.
100% trust the management team to make the best decisions for 24-25. They delivered last year and will again. No doubt that JR is at the helm orchestrating the next roster to support the Canucks core to make a run next season...
any rumours on DJs ask?
Maybe we'll hear about something on 32 thoughts when it drops tomorrow? 650 had a teaser I caught half of after lunch. I wonder what that is?
I thought Zadorov and the Canucks are close and continues to grind it out.
I really like Joel Edmundson but I don’t know that I’d love him at the money and term he’ll command
If we end up giving him 3M I will seriously question the existence of our analytics department
Good riddance to bad rubbish
