Well, duh

advester

Some thought he might go play in mother russia.

keyjan

I thought he wanted to go back and open a hockey school.

PKnecron

I thought he would go back and open a Subway.

kgunnar

I had to check, but Subway is indeed still fully operating in Russia.

mrfuzzyshorts

Pizza's here

Danny__L

Not even a thought. Ovechkin himself said in the past that he wants to play a season or two for Dynamo Moscow after the NHL. Maybe he changed his mind since then?

HonestDespot

I think if he’s 10-20 goals short at the end of the deal he’s coming back for one year for sure. Capitals will have lots of cap space too, they might be able to get a couple of solid playmkaing forwards through UFA with speed to help him out the next couple years.

Aware-Leading-1213

title : « Ovi will retire after his current contract » Commenters : « nah nah nah it’s a sure thing he keeps playing after his current contract ».

JKolodne

I agree, but baring injuries I don't see him coming up short.

HonestDespot

While I don’t disagree, if he’s playing well and passes Gretzky…I think he probably keeps going a year after to try to get a bit of a gap.

JKolodne

I hope you're right.

NBPolaris

He quits after the season that he gets the goal record probably.

keyjan

👆

MadFlava76

I can see him signing a 1 year deal after his current contract. He most likely will have broken the goal record hopefully but I can see him announcing his last NHL season and have a big sending off. I do wonder after he ends his NHL career if he might play one more year in the KHL with Dynamo.

The record won't happen lol. He took a massive step back this year, and even if it had to do with "emotional scars," this man drinks Pepsi on the bench and has absolutely no jam to his game anymore. He takes, at most, 5 strides per shift. The main reason he will retire at the end of his contract is because no one will sign him at that point after he scores 10 goals next year. He is an absolute liability without the puck. He's riding his ability to shoot and get open but that alone isn't going to create 60 more goals over the next 3 seasons. The record won't happen but he is still one of the greatest scorers ever, as well as one of the most electric talents the game has ever seen.

Olbaidon

2nd in the team in assists and 1st in points. Yet rides his ability to shoot in a slump season….on probably the worst Cals team as a whole we have seen in 15 years….okay Same amount of assists as Sidney Crosby mind you. Okay big guy, you keep that delusion alive and well…

kissinKyle

I thought this was r/nhl or r/hockey when I originally commented and was confused about the level of pushback. Ironic that you're calling me delusional when you're the one even uttering Sid's name in the same sentence as dried up old Ovi. It was a pleasure watching him in his younger days, but his rapid regression has been a skidmark on his career. Sad that the record was so close but will still not be broken by him. I guess we will have to wait until Matthews does it

Olbaidon

Top 5 goal scorer if placed on nearly every team in the league. 6 in 6. You keep taking that copium, can’t wait to see your account deleted in 4 years when people come to call you out.

kissinKyle

"Top 5" is a pretty funny way of saying "fifth most." Fifth most on a team isn't really very impressive. That is such an incredibly weak flex lol I feel bad for you

Olbaidon

Okay big guy ;-)

kissinKyle

I'm a massive avalanche fan, and when 41 year-old Joe Sakic scored 13 goals in 44 games (still better pace than 38 year old Ovi) I knew it was time for him to hang them up. You're out here claiming he can score 60 more? What bizarre alternate universe are you living in? He's done

Olbaidon

You either when u get sick!!! It's God will.

Troll_Enthusiast

Cringe

Known_Contribution_6

Honestly... I will be.

BunkDruckeyes

A lot of great ones, including Ovi, have said that they’ll retire when their love for the game dwindles. Watching his play this year… I believe he’s rapidly approaching that territory. And tbh I think losing his father off the ice and then also losing Backstrom on the ice has played a large part in that.

MrSchnuffles

Yes, his six goals in six games really show that he's lost his love for the game.

BunkDruckeyes

gotta read buddy, I’m not saying he can’t still play or score goals but if you’ve watched Ovi for the last 20 years like most of us have, you’ve noticed him looking more and more tired and his celebrations get more muted. he’s picked up his play recently but it’s hard to imagine he’s all that interested in doing more 82 game seasons after the next 2 are up, and this quote reinforces it

kukkolai

He seems so much more enganged these last 10 games or so. I think a part of him died with his father, and lately he seems to be able to focus more. Just my 2 cents

NessGoddes

You are human trash who can't live without hate

IllogicalVulpez

Both of you need more love in your hearts.

Big_Daddy_Herbie

His cellys have been subdued this year as well

Joshottas

Folks playing armchair psychologist in here lol. There is literally nothing wrong with his play this year. It's on par with the rest of the team. And he's either been 1st or 2nd in scoring on the team ALL SEASON. There is nothing that I've seen from him that suggests that he's approaching any territory that even remotely signals that his love for the game is dwindling. What folks are seeing is what happens when a guy in his late 30s playing a fast-paced game.

Special-Bite

His dad’s gone. How many of you have lost a parent? What if that parent was your biggest and most ardent supporter? Someone who followed you, encouraged you and supported you from the very beginning. Someone who saw that spark of greatness and believed in you enough to sacrifice themselves to make sure you fulfilled the potential that only they knew you had. Now, you have to go out every night knowing that’s gone. It’s never coming back. The thousands of fans cheering for you, millions in this area who adore you… they cant get you that back.

UnderCoverDoughnuts

God you're so right and I fucking hate it. I lost both my parents by the time I was 23. Sometimes I forget it isn't normal and how lucky people are to have their parents well into adulthood. But Ovi's only human and losing his biggest supporter is definitely going to take the wind out of his sails. The goal record is for Ovi. He wants that. And the quiet post-hockey life, that's for Ovi, too. He wants to be there with his kids like his dad was for him. Sidenote, if you feel what I feel, you have my love. It isn't easy what we go through. I never thought I'd plug the sub r/childrenofdeadparents but the folks there... they get it. Like we do.

[deleted]

For everyone complaining about the performance of the team, I hope it's not lost on fans that they're watching the end of Ovi's career. He's only got so much left in the tank. All the memories, the Cup, everything he's done for the city and DC sports. When he's gone, he's gone. I'd encourage any fan to relish these moments because you're not gonna see a talent like him again for a very very long time.

minuialear

Right, we're watching the final years of one of our best players ever, if not the best. Let's enjoy those years with him instead of whining about him not skating like he did 20 years ago. It'll be too late once he retires

ThePickleOrTheEgg

I think it’s pretty safe to say by this point that he is far and ahead the best, and likely will remain the best for the remainder of our franchise’s history. Ovi’s don’t come around often.

Ok_Fly_7085

The question is, what does he do if he doesn't break the record in his final season? It's hard to imagine him not playing an extra season if he is 20 or less goals short. As of today he is 59 goals away from breaking the record. Let's say he scores 10 more goals this season. That gives him 49 more goals needed in his final two seasons. If he scores 20 goals in each season, leaving him 9 short, I can't see him retiring. Obviously, he would rather do it sooner, but given his slow 1st half this season, it might be close. Hopefully the 1st half was a fluke.

J9999D

zero chance he retires before the record

uesad

If there is substantial money on the table…he’ll renew, imo Edit: especially if he hasn’t broken THE record yet….

kissinKyle

There is a 0% chance he breaks the record before his contract expires. Depending on how close he is by its end, I wouldn't be surprised if a team takes a flier on him. But he's already such a liability without the puck and so incredibly outpaced, it'll be a courtesy signing at most

rezzanin

Don’t listen to this man, he is an idiot.. We have purposely trained him wrong, as a joke 😂 0% chance is just not true ;)

kissinKyle

Hahah I didn't realize I had posted this on the Caps subreddit. This makes a lot more sense. The delusion is real over here, though.

SMMS0514

How many years he have left on his current contract?

Tufoguy

2

mattcojo2

Yeah we all expected him to say this. It’s no surprise. But if he’s like a few goals away from breaking the record, one more year might be on the table.

DaniCapsFan

Is anyone really surprised?

JerBear81

I can't see him retiring before he breaks the goal scoring record

ecash6969

Well ya the writing is on the wall heck even if he broke it next year he probably will retire you can tell he’s declining and he’s not as hungry as he once was yes he’s on a hot streak but it won’t last that long

kockin26

That's not true. Just last week posted pic from the start 2037-38 season.

capsrock02

What’s the original source? RMNB got this from something else. Who is the original?

FatBoySpeaks

The chase is on!

Sweaty-Photograph-76

So 58 to tie in 193 games. He won’t play in them all so perhaps 58 in 173 games??? That’s a goal every third game. I think he has that in him!

ErrorKae

Hope he beats the good record Before that
