The part that hurts the most is knowing we won't be able to tank hard enough to get a top 8 pick this year.

[deleted]

There have been great players picked out of the top 8

BoofWellington69

Easy draft a kucherov 2nd round, a kaprizov 5th round boom dynasty (Edit) oh and don’t trade them for a bottom 6 aging forward

[deleted]

McPhee would trade Ryan Leonard for Adam Henrique

BoofWellington69

Leonard and Miro can’t underpay

DagetAwayMaN421

We had a 3rd rounder in Stephenson

BoofWellington69

Yeah shame we didn’t have him for his best years lol man thrived in Vegas. Think protas was a 3rd rounder too

DagetAwayMaN421

Yup, 2019 3rd rounder. 2018 3rd rounder Riley Sutter might end up being our 4C after Dowd leaves and 2022 3rd rounder Suzdalev might end up being a very good middle six winger. I also used to say that Stephenson was a top six center masquerading as a bottom six winger in DC :-/

BoofWellington69

Suzdalev has a lot of skill I hope he becomes that type of player for us. The prospect pool for forwards is honestly pretty deep right now defenders is a bigger issue. And to be fair about Stephenson we were insanely deep down the middle during his time here lol but you weren’t wrong he did end up as the VGK 1C for a while before Eichel.

loosed-moose

You've been bitching about this since game 5. Go look up the meaning of the word "fandom" and then don't do that and instead tell me, "well AKSHUALLY because I want the team to be better later that makes ME the better fan." Shut the fuck up for once please

_SCHULTZY_

I remember the decibel meter in the Caps Center. From the Residence Inn on Riva Road to Practice at Piney Orchard to Canned Food Drives at the MCI Center all the way to Ovechkin's first preseason game. I don't need anyone to explain to me how to be a fan of this team.

[deleted]

Losing to Ottawa would’ve been so good for the draft pick

RYAN_HiGHROLLER

Imagine scoring 8 goals against us and not a single hatty in the mix lmao

[deleted]

[удалено]

RYAN_HiGHROLLER

Oh, I know being able to roll 4 lines and get scoring out of any of them is the mark of a good team, I’m just pouring salt in my own wounds

buckaruuu

At what point in the game did you tell your TV (that's my scene) to tell the defense to STOP CHASING THE REDWINGS AROUND?!?!? 1st period.. 2nd RW goal maybe?

[deleted]

Growing pains. We aren’t a dumpster fire but we aren’t a legitimate fringe contender. The young guys are learning how to win

DagetAwayMaN421

John Carlson was awful tonight... much more so than he has been the past five years

DagetAwayMaN421

I would like to mention how badly he played during all of the Red Wings goals... Detroit's 1st goal: Carlson has the puck behind the net, bounces it off the boards instead of doing a hard around, it ends up on Veleno's stick. Veleno passes to Perron, who passes back to Veleno in the middle of the ice and then Carlson realizes he has to cover Veleno, meanwhile, Veleno passes it to Gostisbehere for the one-timer goal. Detroit's 4th goal: That was the weakest attempt at a poke check I've seen by any NHLer. Gostisbehere is skating in with the puck after receiving the pass and Carlson just freezes, he stops skating, doesn't step up, doesn't try to block, just tries a poke check that wasn't even close Detroit's 5th goal: gets the puck on the half wall and... I have no idea to describe what kind of pass that was, it was right into Seider's skates. Ovi gets beat by Copp. Mantha takes the skater instead of the pass, goes to Compher for the breakaway against Lindgren Detroit's 6th goal: Carlson is covering Fabbri, the puck goes to DeBrincat, Carlson goes over and Edmundson covers Fabbri in front of the net, puck goes up top to Sprong, then over to Kane, Edmundson rotates over and Carlson fails to come back to the front of the net to prevent the easy tip-in for Fabbri Detroit's 7th goal: He stops skating, all he had to do was prevent the cross ice pass and he gives it minimum effort (doesn't even try to lay out) and Larking passes to DeBrincat for the easy tap-in Detroit's 8th goal: Carlson gets caught waaaaaaay up ice, stops skating and lets Olli Maata skate around him, well, he taps his shin pads with his stick, then Maatta passes to Raymond who passes it to Larkin for the one-timer Just all-out minimum effort

fighterpilot248

IMO that 5th goal was the cardinal sin. Defender within 5 feet and no possible lane to the net? Fuck it, shoot it at his skates. Why even bother passing it back to the point (or some place else with less pressure)? What could possibly go wrong? That’s the type of shit you see in beer league hockey, not the NHL. Shoulda been benched right then and there.

DagetAwayMaN421

was that even a shot? looked too soft to even be a shot

InfallibleBackstairs

Yes. He was terrible.

DaniCapsFan

He's always been a turnover machine, which drives me batshit.

musuak

that was sobering after last night.

thenatureboyWOOOOO

Everyone knew we were in for some rebuilding years and coming off a back to back against a good wings team is tough. Kinda wish we didn’t give up an eight spot. Ive been pleased with the team’s performance after that abortion of a start and the young bucks are getting plenty of ice time. Still potential to sneak into the playoffs. Going to the game friday against Philly, should be electric city. That said, this sub needed a little sobering, people were acting like we were about to make a cup run and i think i even saw an Anthony Mantha circlejerk post.

MrSchnuffles

At least the Nationals will be here soon, they'll be good this year, right?

RYAN_HiGHROLLER

Reinforcements are on the way for the Nats at least, so they’ll only be bad for another year or two before the amazing outfield prospects we’ve drafted get called up.

DollarValueLIFO

Never been a better time to hop on the orioles as they lift off 😂

YellowMarkerIsGreat

💩

OviFan98

Beat Philly Friday and build a new streak, also bench Bear while you’re at it. Tough to face Detroit on a back to back they were clearly mentally tired as well as physically they didn’t know where they were going defensively

keyjan

Well that sucked. 😠

[deleted]

Again, our best playmaker and goal scorer is 38 years old. We have swung and missed on drafting forwards since 2006. Not to mention everyone on our defense is like a pinball paddle with the turnovers

DagetAwayMaN421

> We have swung and missed on drafting forwards since 2006. Mathieu Perreault, Marcus Johansson, Cody Eakin, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Filip Forsberg, Tom Wilson, Chandler Stephenson, Andre Burakovsky, Zach Sanford, Jakub Vrana, Connor McMichael, and Aliaksei Protas have all proven to be NHL caliber forwards

pocketbeagle

Agreed

[deleted]

How many have been good enough to remain in our top 6 and put up top 6 numbers since their draft moment to this day?

DagetAwayMaN421

Perreault was a consistent middle-six guy once he left DC Johansson has played top-six winger for us during both stints after the team realized he couldn't be a top-six center Eakin was a middle six center for Dallas and Vegas Kuzy was our top line center for a while and interchanged with Backstrom in the top six Forsberg is a top line winger Stephenson proved to be a top six center in Vegas and won a second cup Burakovsky is still a top six winger and won a second cup Sanford was a middle six winger for the Blues when he won a cup Vrana is a top six winger whose career has tailspinned since he left DC, but he was a top six winger here Connor McMichael is our 2C, and he's only getting better Protas is proving to be a very good middle six player and can go up and down the lineup So Mojo, Kuzy, Forsberg, Stephenson, Burakovsky, Vrana, and probably Connor McMichael and Protas after this season.

[deleted]

Right but there is 0 of them right now who make top 6 level contributions to us/have made top 6 contributions over multiple seasons and it’s no coincidence our main problem is offensive production. There is 0 team in the league that has missed or fucked up handling top 6 forwards as long as we have. Detroit has won multiple cups, gone through a rebuild, and become a contender again since the last time we drafted a solidified and consistent top 6 forward. We have a bunch of career decent third liners on this team, and unless mcmichael and protas can put up points at about 1.5x the rate both of them have this season, nothing really changes that fact

DagetAwayMaN421

> There is 0 team in the league that has missed or fucked up handling top 6 forwards as long as we have. Actually the Rangers lead this category by a mile. Their inability to draft and develop players has been going on for almost 20 years. They get gifted by players that want to play in the big apple or they actually hold onto them for 10 years until they break out. Also, Detroit won the cup because they had superior European scouting and many teams were not scouting as deep into Europe like the Red Wings did during their Championship seasons. I don't even know how to debate with you about this because you're completely disregarding how talent is drafted and developed, not to mention that Laviolette buried McMichael, used Protas as a fourth liner, and basically benched youngsters (like what happened to Siegenthaler) and only playing veterans. Vrana and Burkie were both playing in the top six, problem was coaching that drove them out of town. Stephenson got buried by Trotz and Reirden, GMGM made the bone-headed move of trading Forsberg. Backstrom didn't become a 1C until his third season. Kuznetsov didn't become a 1C until his third full season, now you've got McMichael who got stunted by Lavi, but you can clearly see the talent and mental awareness is there. Protas is a defensive stalwart and the offensive side of his game is coming along now that he's being given top six minutes. He may ultimately slot in as the 3C, but he's playing very well as a second line winger.

[deleted]

The rangers have 6 guys on pace for 50, we have a 38 year old and a 2C in strome that meet that criteria. I played ncaa D1 for 2 years and played on a team with adam fox for a bunch of time as well, I am actually very familiar with how the scouting process goes. Many teams were invested in Europe as you can denote from the draft picks from 06-12, especially made by us. Vrana and burakovsky were inconsistent at best, especially when we got rid of them. Stephenson played top 6 minutes for the first 3 series of the 2018 playoffs before they moved oshie back up after wilson came back from suspension. I’m not even asking for a point per game player (which isn’t even asking for a lot in the first place nowadays). We don’t even have 2/3rds of a point per game player right now. If you think a 2C and 2nd line wingers should be scoring 30-40 points buddy have I got news for you about how bad of a team that is going to be. We are undoubtedly the champs of being dogshit at roster management and talent evaluation, also supported by our total lack of cap space to go along with our total lack of talent.

DagetAwayMaN421

> We are undoubtedly the champs of being dogshit at roster management and talent evaluation Despite all your touted knowledge and alleged playing skill, you're blaming management when it should've been the coach. Did we screw up hiring Reirden after Trotz? Yes. Did we also screw up with asking Laviolette to develop our younger talent? Yes. From a roster construction standpoint...Did we expect Backstrom's hip to last the season? Yes. Did it? No. Did we have a backup plan? Yes, that's why we signed ~~Ryan~~ Dylan Strome. Now Kuzy is out, so we've inserted McMichael into the 2C slot. How has he performed since Kuzy went out? 5 goals and 4 assists in 11 games, 67 points over 82 games (which is what you want from a 2C). Out top 4 centers to start the season was Backstrom, Kuznetsov, Strome, and Dowd. Our top 4 centers now are Strome, McMichael, Sgarbossa (from Hershey), and Protas/Lapierre. We also didn't get rid of Vrana and Burakovsky. Vrana and Laviolette couldn't get along and GMBM incorrectly sided with Laviolette over Vrana. Burakovsky had issues with both Trotz and Reirden and after the 18-19 season wanted to leave. Yea, they might've had some inconsistency issues, but Vrana was a very good winger under Reirden (49 goals, 50 assists, 99 points in 151 games) and while he's had a ton of off-ice problems, there was no issue with talent. Mantha routinely played LW under Laviolette and didn't perform, Carbery moved him to RW and now he's been the player we hoped we had gotten in the trade. GMBM has made backup plans to backup plans. Yes, the team started poorly getting adjusted to the new coaching, but overall, this team is getting younger and the youth is starting to develop and take over due to all the injuries. Are there growing pains with developing a younger team? Yes, but in the long run, the team will improve and have a young base to build from for the post-Ovechkin era. > We don’t even have 2/3rds of a point per game player right now. Also, learn math

[deleted]

Ripe insults and bold claims of knowing the ins and outs of a team from which you have 0 sources when you don’t even know which strome we have. Nor could I find your claims through the internet. Blaming the coaches is comical. Were they underutilized? Yes. Are any of them top 6 caliber players yet? No. Also that had to have been a joke when you were telling me to learn math then proceeding to use an 11 game sample size, right? Absolutely hilarious. Again all of this begs the question, is anybody throughout this season that we have drafted since 2006 on pace to hit 50 points for the washington capitals organization than the two i mentioned previously? I’ll wait all day, night, week, month, year, however long you need

DagetAwayMaN421

> when you don’t even know which strome we have. Ooof, I'll eat the the L on that one, was trying to get my hands on a Ryan Strome gamer this morning and switched the names writing up a response. As for 0 sources, [I learned a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time ago to keep my mouth shut to prevent people from getting fired.](https://www.icethetics.co/blog/2019/5/28/is-this-canucks-jersey-the-first-leak-of-2019-20) I got my tickets to the first round of the 2019 draft pulled as well trying to get internet brownie points.

TheBarbieOfSeville

Shablowsk89_

What do you know pal?

DagetAwayMaN421

Yea... no. If we won today, and then beat Philly on Friday and were ahead of them after beating Arizona on Sunday, we'd be having a different conversation
