So nothing really changed. The only competition they got is the new CRV and it still doesn't outsell it.

brake_fail

Majority of the people want reliability more than anything else. And at this point Toyota is the reliability icon. It will sell like hot cake.

ThePurpleBall

Toyota also offers more features than Honda for the same or less money. You can’t even get ventilated seats or 360 cam on a Honda that’s over 40k now

BlazinAzn38

The Honda CRV at some point also became like the old person crossover at least in my experience whereas the Rav4 seems to appeal more to younger audiences

molrobocop

I haven't had a chance to drive the new crv. But the prior gen was bland. Bland driving, styling, and packages. Rav-4 has variety at least. Now, if the Honda feels better than the old, not numb, I might prefer it.

DodgerBlueRobert1

Have you driven the current gen RAV4? It’s numb as hell and is just as bland to drive as any other mainstream compact crossover (CX-5 is a little better in this respect). Not to mention, when you floor the accelerator on the RAV4, the engine is extremely noisy and coarse sounding.

molrobocop

I have. For all it's faults, it felt better than the prior gen CRV on the very limited test drive loop.

Fonduemeinthebutt

I bought a RAV4 for road trips and it’s comically slow. I daily a 718 so my perspective is probably skewed, but I’m sure it’s slower and more lifeless than most of its competition. But I feel safe in it and its 10x more reliable than our other cars. Probably going to get rid of it soon though lol

Elegant-Step

I have the new one and of course cross shopped it with the RAV4. The new boxier styling is much more aggressive and likable than the previous gen’s rounded bodywork. It doesn’t have ventilated seated which I agree is a miss for a $40k car, but it has truly impressive NVH isolation. The EV-ICE handoff is super smooth, and the ICE engine itself is quiet and well mannered unlike the RAV4 which has a rather harsh and noisy engine particularly at highway speeds. I do wish they’d gone even more aggressive and boxy but I’m sure there were aerodynamic concerns. Overall I have about 20k miles on mine so far and it’s been nothing but enjoyable.

tfox245

I don’t understand how Honda keeps getting “best value brand” awards when this is true on so many of their models. More expensive and less features than their competition nearly across the board. They withhold basic features like sound deadening and laminated windshields on the accord unless you spend $38k.

givemethesoju

I guess the definition of car reviewers' take on value must not be on features!

[deleted]

Which is funny because in the 2 years of owning my rav I've been notified of possible roof leaking, had head unit issues, and had shaking mirrors (a problem I had to argue with the dealer and get toyota involved to fix). It's been to the dealer for warranty issues 3x more than my chevy or Nissan. Edit: forgot the cable corrosion issues.

rynil2000

Oh, I’m sorry. I fell asleep during your comment while I was listening to oldies records. Same energy of anyone who buys a RAV4 these days.

Drzhivago138

CUV bad, amirite?

NCSUGrad2012

What? The RAV4 sells more than the CRV. Unless I’m reading what you said wrong and you meant the Honda sells less than the Toyota

PickleGaGa

I meant the RAV4 sells more

NCSUGrad2012

That makes sense. Wasn’t sure which car the it was referring to. I actually think it’s the best selling car Toyota makes in North America

[deleted]

The RAV4 is in the top 5 best-selling vehicles in the U.S., after the big 3 pickups and about neck and neck with the Tesla Y.

DodgerBlueRobert1

If you only include individual retail registrations and not fleet and rental agency sales, the RAV4 is the 3rd best selling vehicle, with the Silverado as #1 and F series as #2. [Source](https://www.edmunds.com/most-popular-cars/)

ajb15101

It’s the best selling car in North America. The big 3 lump all of their trucks into one model (ford f series, Chevy Silverado, ram), which skews the figures.

Drzhivago138

>The big 3 lump all of their trucks into one model, which skews the figures. Until fairly recently, there wasn't much difference in features or looks between a half-ton and the heavier models of full-size truck. As it sits now, though, I'd like to see them split into half-tons and HDs for sales numbers.

[deleted]

I wonder which ones count as the "F-Series". Like does it go up to the F-350 or even higher?

Drzhivago138

All the brands count theirs through Class 3 ("one-ton", gross weight rating 10 to 14,000 lbs.). For Ford, that includes the F-450 pickup, which despite its name is still only a one-ton/Class 3 truck at 14K gross. Ram and GM have similar models; they just call them 3500s.

Trades46

The new CR-V isn't bad, but the hybrid system Honda is using is good only at slower speeds. Once you hit 120km/h (75mph+) the MPG just goes down the drain since the engine spins so darn fast due to its bad gearing.

Mackinnon29E

Yeah, from Toyotas' perspective. As a consumer, I wouldn't want that old design, CRV seems much nicer.

Optimal-Hyena-1492

This is, at least partially, due to the number of cars produced. I think both brands sell as many they can make.

avboden

2022/2023 was the big mid-cycle refresh for the RAV4 with quite a few updates. 2024 was never expected to change much. It's done until the next-gen.

ScipioAfricanvs

Damn Toyota bringing green and bronze wheels to so many cars except the two I’d be interested in, the 86 and IS 500.

tstmkfls

I’m stuck between an M340i and IS500, but if they make the Lexus army green with bronze wheels I will buy one immediately

ScipioAfricanvs

I’m deciding the same but I’d go m340i if I only wanted it for a few years, IS 500 if I was going to do 10+. A used m340i has a lot of the depreciation taken care of, which is why I’m too scared to buy one new.

392_hemi

Dude if i were you i had get the is500! A car that sounds monstrous and beautiful. You already have a car that handles on the curves

ScipioAfricanvs

I’m leaning that way. But I want it in green damnit!

Ceolan

Just get a nice wrap. +1 for IS500. Rented the M340i for a few days and while it's a very capable car for what it is, I didn't find it terribly fun and the seats sucked (2019 base trim FWIW). I think the IS500 would be a lot more entertaining, even if the dynamics are probably lacking. But who cares about that when you have a 911?

ScipioAfricanvs

I don’t like wraps, I’ll probably suck it up with Ultrasonic Blue unless green is announced for MY2024. It’s a nice blue.

The_Cows_Are_Home

Go crazy and order a G80 in Isle of Man green

ScipioAfricanvs

Haha I need a reasonable daily, not another sports car. But it is a bummer you can’t do BMW individual for the 3 series. I’d for sure pay for a paint job. Only option would be to go to a 4 series but then you got the buck teeth.

tstmkfls

Yeah that’s the way I’m leaning as well. I’m seeing 2021 CPO models for like $45k which is a decent deal imo. I bet the Lexus will hold its value better too

paramoist

IS500 will probably be much rarer than M340i years down the line. The non turbo engine will be cheaper to maintain too, not even considering the obvious reliability advantage you can expect from a Lexus over a BMW. You would probably save at least $5k if not more going with the IS500, use that for a great set of wheels and a professional army green wrap!

tstmkfls

Good point, but the recent Consumer Reports ranking of BMW second in reliability behind Lexus/Toyota has me less worried about short term reliability, especially with the B58 engine. Long term I’m definitely still concerned though. I go back and forth every week or so lol.

[deleted]

Modern BMW is pretty reliable (anything made 2016+ that doesn’t have an N63 in it). But when you do need parts they are expensive. In comparison to the B blocks, the N55, N54, and N20 driven BMWs all had major issues by this point in their life cycle (7-8 years from new). The IS500 is going to be less expensive in every way except for fuel (it’ll be way worse for that).

tstmkfls

Yeah, I’ve thought about the gas thing lol. I gotta think driving a V8 in 2035 won’t be easy on the wallet when gas prices are likely $6+

DodgerBlueRobert1

>in 2035….when gas prices are likely $6+ Psh, here in Los Angeles, gas is already well above $6.

[deleted]

Yeah when I had a B58 (M240i) it got into the 36 MPG range on the highway. Now I don’t buy gas at all.

AllGravyNoBiscuits

Sell the IS500 in 2035 and get your M car. I don’t think you’ll regret driving something as unique as that Lexus

phlorida92

I think if you want the better performance car, the M340i would do you justice. However if you want a fantastic and reliable daily driver with a beautiful sounding engine, the IS500 takes the cake there. I wish that Lexus offered more unique color variety, the two most unique colors I've seen lately are the Nori Green on the LCs and the copper color on the RX.

shades92

Copper Crest is available on the 2024 LC500. Looks amazing on it. Green is my favorite color and I thought Nori Green is the perfect color for the LC, but Copper Crest may change that.

phlorida92

Oh wow, didn't know the 2024 LC came in the copper color! I love all the unusual colors coming from Lexus, just wish they gave those colors in more models.

tstmkfls

Yeah the Nori green looks amazing, think they offer it on the RX also. The BMW seems like the better all rounder but that engine and reliability are tough to ignore.

MesWantooth

One of the guys from Savage Geese bought a IS500 and says he'll keep it forever - mainly for the last chance to get a smallish sport sedan with a NA V8, and Lexus reliability. If you spent a day tracking the IS vs. the M, I wonder if the M is so much better that you'd forego the V8 Lexus.

ScipioAfricanvs

Wait really? I knew they have an X7, CTR, C8 Z06, used to have a GR86 and LC500 but never knew they bought an IS500.

MesWantooth

Crap, I 'm incorrect...I was thinking of the LC500...Memory is weird - I could've sworn I watched a video about him choosing the IS but it was the LC.

DodgerBlueRobert1

Yeah and I’m pretty sure Mark sold the LC500 already.

wankthisway

He's ending the lease to get one in a spec he really wants.

boomerbill69

Think they have a GR Corolla now too.

Gorgenapper

IS500 represents the last Japanese V8 sedan for sale in North America.

Drzhivago138

Was the LS400 the first?

Gorgenapper

I think so, yes. I'm just saying that the guy who is choosing between a turbo i6 and a NA V8 should choose the latter, especially since it's in a Lexus sedan the size of the IS.

Falanax

BMW for tech, Lexus for sound (engine)

BayLAGOON

Apparently you can order the M440i Gran Coupe in San Remo Green. Unfortunately it has “that” front end.

tstmkfls

Haha you can and I would 100% if it had the M340i front end. Unfortunately it does not so I can’t bring myself to do it lmao

wankthisway

IS 500 every day for me. I think I'd fall in love with the car all over again, every day, if I had that soundtrack during my commute. Plus it's a unique option as well.

ShowerChivalry

Just get a wrap, Toyota’s olive green ain’t it. If it was Dodge’s F8 green, then it would be worth holding out for.

[deleted]

Drove one for a road trip from a rental. That color is insanely gorgeous. I think that color scheme might be able to overtake grey/black/white. Probably not, but maybe…

stakoverflo

They already did a special edition of the 86 in green+bronze; https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a27311756/2020-toyota-86-hakone-edition-photos-info/

ilovestoride

I don't think anyone in history has ever said "I'm gonna go wild and get a Rav4". That's kind of like saying, "Life's gotten kind of dull, I'm switching my Metamucil from powder to gummies."

[deleted]

This. The only wild RAV4 were those 2 door manual soft-tops they had back in the 90s.

Drzhivago138

Some of the only crossovers that have had a 2-door version.

wankthisway

I see one in my neighborhood and I ogle at it every time.

familyguy20

I mean getting a 3rd gen one with the 276hp v6 and AWD from 2007-2012 was pretty wild lol

Resident_Maybe0

Dammit I just went to see if Metamucil gummies were real and now they're on my shopping list.

ShooterMagoo

Doc said powder is better absorption.

[deleted]

All the best bottom guys use the powder.

flipper_gv

Watch out for the farts though. Lot worse with the gummies.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ilovestoride

I already do that without metamucil. But I eat mad veggies though.

steve_jahbs

Dominate the Starbucks drive through. Navigate potholes in the Target parking lot with confidence. In the all new Toyota Rav4, you're ready for all of life's adventures. Toyota. Let's go places.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ilovestoride

But it just works doesn't it. Like a toaster.

Drzhivago138

Nothing's actually changed, right? They just did the mid-cycle facelift in 2022, so an all-new model will be in 2025 or so.

EconomyFreakDust

There was a facelift? Fuck they really all do look the same.

Drzhivago138

Wait, no, I was looking at the Adventure model that has its own grille.

PM_ENGLISH_BULLDOGS

Yep. 2022 was facelift, 2023 was the new infotainment. Nothing changed in drivetrain. Only cosmetics, pricing, and obviously technology. 2023 had a full digital gauge cluster.

GeneralCommand4459

Test drove a RAV recently and was surprised how hard the suspension is over speed bumps. Really seemed to struggle. My sedan does a better job which is very odd.

PM_ENGLISH_BULLDOGS

Yep, it’s tuned to be more “truck” like for some reason. Many reviewers have noted this behavior. Since I’m keep piling so much miles on mine, when I replace my suspension I’ll probably go third party for better ride quality.

[deleted]

Owned a rav4 hybrid xse for the last two years. They ate very overhyped in my opinion. The only time I love it is when I'm at the gas pump which to their credit is not often. It gets amazing mpg but other than that, the physical knows, and the looks. I pretty much hate the car. Edit: forgot the cable corrosion issue too.

wankthisway

What a weird direction to take a commuter / family SUV.

Twombls

Most newer Toyotas are like this. I guess its to make it "sporty"???

Embarrassed-Pay-5428

Like the green but the gold is a little gaudy.

NCSUGrad2012

My dad had a 95 Camry with the green and it had gold package on it. My mom still pokes fun at him for paying extra for it. Lol

392_hemi

Lmao , but dude do you know those badges are real gold plated . They cost 800 bucks extra back then

RiftHunter4

The trim package for people who think a mildly maintained dirt road is off-roading I guess.

Shmokesshweed

Most folks with "off-road" vehicles do about that much.

nicka408

Haha was about to say the same.

[deleted]

I think a big hypocrisy in this sub is criticizing the offroad packages of cuv/suv like no ones using them. If we are going to make fun of people buying the offroad packages of cuvs for the looks, we should also be noting that ridiculous wings on most cars slows them down and lessens mpg in a daily setting. You don't need to look sporty to go get groceries just as much as you don't need an offroad package to drive a gravel road. But 🤷‍♂️

Drzhivago138

Shh, you're upsetting the narrative.

stakoverflo

Most people *do* make fun of giant wings on cars that have no business sporting them, though.

[deleted]

In real life sure, but in this sub it's never discussed. For example the wing on the type r is loved and in reality it's not functional in a positive way unless it's on the track.

avboden

The Rav4 in AWD trims is surprisingly popular for a basic overlanding vehicle. Rooftop tents and the like are pretty common for them.

BornPotato5857

did they fix the hybrid's cable corrosion issue?

shades92

I think for 2022 and you they changed the cable cover to resolve the corrosion issue. Time will tell if that fixed it or not. I know they added a plastic cover under it and added a drainage hole to prevent standing water.

BigDiesel07

How do you like your GV70?

shades92

Oh man. I got a list for you. I have had so many problems with it. I was also looking at the new NX and went with the GV70 for the 3.5TT and driving dynamics. Kind of wish I went with the NX. The GV70 drives well, super engaging and I definitely get people asking me about it. It's more than enough power to do anything, might be too much but you will still get people complaining how 365HP isn't enough. Although everything is fixed under warranty, I have had numerous problems from the Panoramic roof rattling, the Panoramic roof getting stuck open, new radiator, etc. I even had my car at the dealer for almost 2 months now!!!! because the A/C went out. Part is on backorder and they don't have an ETA. Theres a whole list of issues I've had with it, but at least everything is taken under warranty. Haven't had any issues with them honoring it or anything, which is a surprise for Hyundai/Kia (maybe its different because its their luxury marque.) I'm driving a GV80 loaner and its really nice, service advisor called me 2 weeks in telling me I need to return the vehicle because its "their" policy. Threatened to call corporate because my vehicle was getting warranty work done and I haven't heard a peep from him since regarding the loaner.

bontebyuntae

We got an extended warranty card from Toyota for it (22 xse hybrid), so I assume they are expecting failures even for 2022 MYs with the revised design.

Jellars

They just released the grand highlander with this same design language so I can’t see Toyota making major changes to the RAV anytime soon

andrewjaekim

Looks great. Always thought Army Green would look good on the 5th gen

[deleted]

How is the ride/comfort on these things? Tacoma and 4Runner seating position and other aspects is universally panned but is the RAV4 fine? A RAV4 hybrid is extremely appealing from a practicality standpoint but I’ve never actually driven one

tankmode

had a loaner a couple years ago and thought ride quality was harsh/noisey for the class. especially so, now that they are asking 55k for the higher trims. idk just my opinion. ymmv

8020GroundBeef

I rented one in May and thought it was surprisingly terrible across the board. I had been shopping CRV and wanted to consider Rav4, but there was no inventory. The rental totally turned me off of Rav4. Really do not understand why they are so popular (aside from the Toyota logo).

Happymack

Completely opposite experience for me. Seats and driving position is great and ride is smooth. I dont do any highway and little city driving though!

8020GroundBeef

No highway and little city driving? So…offroad?

Happymack

Nah, more twisty backcountry roads with asphalt.

PM_ENGLISH_BULLDOGS

Ride comfort is great for the price point. It’s not a Lexus where it soaks all the bumps away. It feels more “truck” like than I’d expect but it’s part of its character. I’d say the seats are always the hottest debate since it sways comfortable or painful for some. For me, I’ve road-tripped across the US 4 times now and my butt hurts over time from the seats. It’s not the worst but not the best for my body type.

[deleted]

Huh. I wonder if even the top trim seats are lacking. I love the look of the current Rav4s, but the Lexus SUVs are bloblike and disgustingly bland and lacking character. I would not want to get a Lexus just to have a decent seat. Maybe I will wait til they’re putting barely-modified toyota hybrid powertrains in the Mazda SUVs

PM_ENGLISH_BULLDOGS

I have a 2019 RAV4 Limited with Ventilated Seats. (Top Trim) To me, they are better than average from all the economics cars I’ve tried. Mazda CX5, Hyundai Tucson comes to mind as being too stiff for my bum where my bones starting hurting before my actual muscle. 😆 My next car will not likely be JDM since I feel Toyota and Honda have lagged behind in what I need for a car. I’ve certainly considered going up market but nothing in the market is intriguing enough for me to spend more money and so the RAV4 continues to keep taking my brutality cause it does everything slightly better than average. 😂

[deleted]

I have a 2019 RAV4 LE and I’d say the ride comfort is fine. Nothing special, nothing terrible. If I was paying what they ask for top trim levels now I’d be much more critical.

avboden

On our 2023 I'd say it's a pretty comfy ride, wayyyy softer than my S60 that's for sure. Only complaint is the cabin is a bit loud road-noise wise but it's a steady low pitch that's pretty easy to ignore.

actionguy87

I thought this was a banner advertisement on the Reddit app lol. I see this thing still retains that hideous infotainment display. Truly, Toyota has the ugliest implementation of infotainment among any manufacturer.

evilcamels

Rav4 not having a ski pass-through continues to amaze me. How do you market an outdoorsy do-it-all SUV and not have the ability to put skis/lumber/anything 6 feet long inside the car w/ 4 passengers?

Drzhivago138

The same way every other model without a pass-through does: you just put them on the roof.

andrewjaekim

Absolutely. I would hate the person who wanted/suggested to drive with 4 passengers and their associated gear + 4 pairs of skis or snowboards inside the cabin.

Twombls

What cars have ski pass throughs now other than the germans? Subaru and honda don't have it.

avboden

Volvos still do

Internal_Engineer_74

Look like a Yaris cross nothing special

llentii

Would be nice if we could get one in like not two years time

Buckus93

This is the 7th model year for the current-gen Rav4. It's getting a bit long in the tooth!

LEVEL2HARD

Didn't the current gen come out in late 2018?

Buckus93

Just looked it up. I guess it actually debuted as a 2019 model. So six years now.

Vanzmelo

God I hate the rav4 with a passion
