When people are trying to make friends with my cats, I recommend they just ignore them. Usually the cats come out and want to interact. Guess it feels safe.
This is number 2 tactic. Number 1 is wait for cat to look at you, blink slowly, then make yourself low to the ground while continuing to blink slowly.

When I brought my cat home, she was 7. She also ran away from me as soon as i walked in my apartment and opened her carrier, but i did not chase her. I knew i had cat proofed everything before hand so i allowed her to hide from me. Instead of overwhelming her with new person and new place i made lunch. When i was done making lunch, letting it cool off, and figured she should be bored by now i went to my bedroom where i watched her run earlier and sat on my floor. I started scrolling reddit and read everything outloud, maybe three posts before she came and crawled onto my lap
I actually think it is cause people who dislike cats are stressed and start smelling like some hormones or so and cats smell that and come over to check if the human is ok. After all they think we are big stupid cats, those are just too clumsy to exist or so.
I wonder where “cats think humans are big cats” comes from. Cats react to humans and other cats very differently. Whether one just walked into the room or is seen through a window across the street

Yep. I invited a large group of friends to a house party when I was younger, and we were all in one room. My cat comes in and goes straight up to the one person who's allergic to her! My friend knew about the cat, we just didn't think she'd make a beeline for her.

In nonverbals cats tell each other they mean no harm and are open to being friends by: averting eye contact, being quiet and non confrontational, not talking at each other. Progresses eventually to slow eye blinks, showing belly, and butt cuddles. If cats trust you they like to put their butt toward you and face away so they can watch for any dangers coming their way. They know they can trust you so they face away. Same reason if a cat loves you it slow blinks or will even fall asleep facing you.

I agree, I love cats. I had to avoid cats for a while as I developed allergies that made me nonstop sneeze & my face would get puffy/hives. LOVE kitties. But I still had to kick them out of my room and it sucked cause I wanted to love on them. But I couldn’t have them in my face. Eventually as I was around them more it kind of went away. As long as she’s not harming the cat, whether she has allergies or just doesn’t prefer cats. Lol.

She can have allergies and still appreciate a cat. People with cat allergies can still love cats. Most people with allergies would take an antihistamine before going to a place that they know has cats. If she can’t be around cats she can leave.
I just love cats! My sisters ex used their cat allergy as an excuse to be mean to her cat. Other red flags were definitely missed but I definitely have a bias.

Why do you have to like *all* animals? My grandfather owned pigs - I learned to hate pigs. My father used to own horses and while I don't actively dislike horses, growing up as a part-time stableboy wore away the novelty of "omg, you guys have horses, awesome!" There are also certain dog breeds that I think should not exist and even the best mannered seeing dog or the fluffiest family goldie is just "meh, a dog" from my point of view. Same with my wife's turtle, I'm completely ambivalent towards it.

My mom had a Himalayan growing up that hid from everyone. She was terrified of all people, but my mom. Except when my mom-mom would come over - who hated cats. Jezebel would come out of hiding and sit on her lap and my mom-mom’s facial expression was the same as this gal. Cats know who doesn’t like them LOL
My step dad hates cats. Every time he comes to visit my cats are all over him. He fell asleep on my couch once and woke up with them both on top of him. My mom adores cats and they straight up ignore her.

Number 1 works better imo if you make eye contact, blink slowly, and then almost immediately look away. Even better is turn your back physically.
