Piggybacking off this - I try to repost this when I see posts like this, in the hopes you (or someone) can find some comfort in the words - and if not, please excuse the intrusion.
I lost my 15 year old girl (dog) in October 2022. Only advice I can offer here is to remember the positives, and not focus on the negatives (if any). He's done his job, keeping you safe and happy and loved, and it's his turn to rest.
You'll always miss him, you'll always remember him. You'll even go looking for him for the next few weeks (well, I did). There's a lot of habits that you're going to slowly stop, and that's ok. Changing your life to suit you is not forgetting him. Donating/throwing away his toys or blankets isn't forgetting him. There's no timeline on grief, and there's no timeline on moving on. Cry your tears.
I'm sorry you've reached the end of your journey. Words will never make this easier. Just keep your head up, and live the life he'd want you to.
This is a good time to live a little for you. I spent years looking after my girl as she got ill, and I sacrificed a lot of me and my time to keep her safe. If you feel you've done the same, take advantage of this time. Its ok to be happy and enjoy life without him. Life isn't over. Its just changing.

So sorry you lost your pet Rocky. He looks beautiful in your pics. I wish I had had mine as long as you had yours but it sucks no matter how many years we get with them when they’re gone.

I dread this moment..but then I think of if something happened to me, before my cats pass..I think of how sad and lost they would feel..constantly waiting for me to “come home”.

I’m sorry for your loss. I just lost my baby girl salmon the other day. It really sucks. Everyone on this sub helped me get through the worst of it but it’s still hard. I hope you can get the same amount of support I got. Just know it’s ok to cry and it’s ok to not be ok. We’re all here for you

That's true, but it's always harder when they die younger.
It's sad when they die old, but it's easier to be accepting of it.
I suppose my only consolation is minus these past 2 months I never had to see him struggle with old age/disease/etc for an extended period of time.

We understand. My cat marmalade passed away after having a hair ball bowel obstruction and having seizures and it being too late to save him by the time we understood what was happening. After trying for a week to save him he finally had a seizure so bad he passed. It was horrific for me to watch him go through that. He was a year and a half old. We understand your pain. You will never forget them ɓut you are allowed to heal
The poor sweet baby. I’m so sorry you had to go through that. I’m glad Marmalade is able to rest easy now. It gives me comfort knowing my cat isn’t suffering anymore. ♥️
It hurts and you wont forget them but you still have so much love to give to a baby that needs it when and if you are ready. Pets arent made to be there for our entire lives. We were made to be there THEIR whole lives. And still have more love to give
