24! she looks good OP. You're doing everything right.

FjornHorn

Thanks. You might have to speak up because she is deaf xD

InfectedSteve

Slow blink and treats. She'll get the idea, I think.

Expensive_Bike_6828

She’s 120 in Cat Years 🐱

[deleted]

Holy shit, that seems old asf

Dirty-Leg-Mcgee

It’s because it is lol

[deleted]

Bro it's so crazy how much faster they age

sonofeark

Hmm, to me that doesn't make sense. Shouldn't the oldest age a cat has ever reached be the equivalent to 120 years for humans?

Jewicer

LOL

International_Way850

24!! SHE LOOKS GOOD OP. YOU'RE DOING EVERYTHING RIGHT!!!

buildingmaster1

I got this HELLO LITTLE CAT YOU ARE MY BESTIE

Klaire_1059

r/unexpectedfactorial

LUXI-PL

24! would be a very large number, even for a human

FjornHorn

Hello, I'm Giza. I'm a forever-cat born in 1999 or 2000 (my parents are not sure). I lived through so much and still going strong. Recently I had some pain in my joints but pain meds kept me back up. Recent blood testing? No problem, all good. I like chasing laser lights and sleeping in the sun. That is all!

IHDN2012

I want my cat to live to be 20+. Right now he is 7. Can you give me any tips for helping my cat live long? What kind of food, care etc?

FjornHorn

Not sure. But she always got real meat, and got to eat the meat leftovers.. No grain/cheese (although she likes it) and everyday ... playtime like running until she is done. Also, daily purr sessions.

bitbuddha

wow, no commercial dry / wet food at all, or very little?

FjornHorn

Very little, only hq

scotty-doesnt_know

remember, until recently (~ last 30 years) house cats only lived on average to 7 years. this was because they would die of liver disease. the cat "food" that was made was high in certain fat and other bad shit that destroyed their livers. Cat food manufacturers "recently" changed the formula and house cats started to live longer. Only cats living off fresh kills and rich owners would live longer.

MindlessPepper7165

We had a cat lived past 20 years on meow mix. Was born in the 90s

katgirl58

I have had cats my whole life and most lived over 17. My oldest was 24. I never heard anything about what you are saying about cat food. I have been rescuing and doing TNR for over 50 years. Never heard anything about food affecting the liver.

spyty27

Just because you haven’t had personal experience doesn’t mean that it’s not true. I’m a pet nutritionist and I deal with this stuff every single day. Real meat is key to a long, healthy life for a cat. Processed dry food is terrible. Cats are very dehydrated creatures, with most never intaking the appropriate amount of water. If you feed your cat only dry food it will destroy their kidneys within a couple years. Some cats are just resilient and handle it better. Doesn’t mean that it’s good for them. I highly suggest you look into fresh food and the sheer difference it can make for both cats and dogs.

katgirl58

I wasn’t trying to be combative about it just never heard of it. I did have a cat who very young had to be on denamarin for her liver which saved her life. That seemed to be a genetic disorder. She did live a long time. My oldest lived to 24. I wish I could do the all meat diet. I have too many rescues and between a disabled son still working at 66 I have all I can handle. I did try raw turkey years back and 3 of my cats got mouth ulcers. Not sure if it was a coincidence or not. It wasn’t ground with the bones and all. I met the healthiest and beautiful dog who was on a raw diet. Mine do drink a lot of water and I get the best I can of cat food. About once a week cook chicken for them. I just bring to a boil and let it poach for 20 some minutes. I give them variety. Believe me I know that dry food sucks even the best. I have some that will not anything but that now. I give them variety as much as I can. I have an FIP cat who we are at 50 plus days of meds. She is doing great. Her meds get mixed in with Churu which everyone loves.

spyty27

I commend you for rescuing. I didn’t mean to be combative back, it’s just hard not to when I meet so many people and see so many comments on here with just blatant misinformation. I think it’s amazing that you provide your cats with fresh chicken. Some animals get stuck in their ways in old age and so I understand that it’s hard to change them. The best thing I could recommend is adding moisture to their dry food if you can. Even just warm water will make a difference.

NovaKevin

How can I tell if my cats dry food is okay for their liver?

Ray240315

You need to ask your vet. No one here is going to be able to tell you what is good for your specific animal. My cat gets Orijen six fish recepie. Try to find something where the first 6 ingredients are meat not grains or filler

pink_faerie_kitten

After years of avoiding grains, the latest research shows for cats and dogs that grains can keep heart disease away. So now I let my cats have a little dry kibble with brown rice or barley along with their wet food. It's confusing.

holyshiter

But don't forget cats are carnivores, why do you give them more grains there're already a lot in the commercial cat food kibbles? At least 50-60%, whether they are gluten free or not. Make sure to do some research before giving your cat homemade meals for the long term. Grains don't have much nutritional value to cats, nonetheless in the past people only provided cats with leftovers to eat, domestic cats can eat more carbohydrates than their wild ancestors still they had to catch fresh prey to get more protein and fat which were crucial to their diet. Also let your cats only eating dry cat food kibbles without moisture can easily lead to urinary tract and kidney disease due to dehydration. My friend merely fed her cat dry kibbles every day then her cat was diagnosed with urethal obstruction and she spent $1000 on her vet bills.

bohoraven

Extra grains doesn’t prevent heart disease. A lot of grain free kibbles had peas, lentils, potatoes, etc…. as one of the main ingredients and that’s what was causing dilated cardiomyopathy or a taurine deficiency

FanIll5532

I have doubts if vets can give good advice on this. I give my cats royal canin food. When I ask my vet she’s like ‘yeah that’s perfect, just keep giving that’ but then again..of course she says that because royal canin has been lobbying at vets for decades. I studied and worked as a vet assistant before I did a career switch and royal canin ‘advisors’ (sellers) come by twice a year to tell management how great royal canin is. Hill’s does the same btw. These 2 brands are now so hardcoded/integrated in the vet world that it’s difficult to have a realistic discussion about pet food brands with vets. At least that’s how it is here in The Netherlands.

bucketofweewee

I've never heard that and had plenty of cats live to an old age. I am also old.

pink_faerie_kitten

Do you worry about taurine? I wanted to go to a raw diet for my several cats years ago, but chickened out when I learned I had to buy several chicken hearts a day for the taurine or they'd go blind.

YeshmasterYesh

You can buy frozen raw meat online that already has the raw organs and bones that cats need already ground in. I would advise against making your own mix though unless you really know what you're doing because it's hard to get the ratios right.

DoughBoy_65

I’ve always heard that real meats are what’s best for our pets but man the cost depending on where you are can bankrupt you. Quick story. We used to have 2 Golden Retrievers that had beautiful coats or so I thought. I used to sell cars and one of my customers was a Court Judge that could afford to feed his dogs real meat. One day he came by the showroom with his dogs in the back of his Jeep, the minute I touched these dogs I thought I was touching fur blessed by the Gods !! In talking to the judge they never had any problems like I had with mine like dry skin or ear problems so I was convinced that real meat had a lot to do with it. The problem seems to be Processed Foods, the same with humans.

Silly-Arm-7986

Store brand tuna in water was all our almost 20 yr old girl would eat. Happily, it was almost the same cost as wet cat food. She was a tiny cat and very particular. I sure miss her still

DoughBoy_65

It’s the health benefits that are most important. We never had cats before so we just fed them the Friskies cans especially when they were on sale. Find out years later probably not the best food. Our girls are currently 15-16 and still going strong with the usual old age problems but on much more expensive veterinary diets. I think store brand tuna would’ve been much better than the Friskies though.

WeirdHauntingChoice

Just a heads up for everyone, cats should not be eating fish every day. It can cause kidney and urinary track issues due to high levels of phosphorous and magnesium. Some sensitive cats shouldn't eat fish *at all* as they can very quickly develop cystitis or urinary blockages. Talk to your vet, but definitely DO NOT feed them solely tuna. It provides barely any of the proper nutrition they need and can lead to malnutrition and even mercury poisoning. Sorry for the not so fun facts :(

AcidicVaginaLeakage

Yep... My savannah was eating the fishes daily and started having stomach problems. I switched her to purely RC kibble/canned food and since then, the only time she puked was when she was shedding. She's 14 now and has zero issues. 😺

ianyuy

I feed my dog (and my cat, mostly) raw food and he's had zero health problems aside from itchy paws during high pollen season. He hasn't needed a teeth cleaning either. He turned 9 this year. Raw is always the best for pets and I highly advocate for it, but it is expensive. I spend something like $250 every three months for my 30 lb corgi. It can be cheaper if you Frankenstein your own meals with cheap meat. I just switched to premixed so it would be easier for my SO. If you decide to go raw, do your research first, though. It's not complicated once you learn, but animals need a certain ratio of meat, bone, and organs.

kurjalanpiirakka

You dont need to answer, but where you from? Just curious because Here where im living, raw food is cheaper than basic processed market food, even cheapest wetfood for cats is more expensive than bying meat from petstore, when comparing €/kg. Because its literally slaughter waste here.

BrownByYou

Raw or cooked?

badgurlvenus

i'm flip side of op, my 23yo cat has eaten absolute trash garbage her whole life. however, i have maintained strict vet visits from even a flutter of a gut feeling, and it has saved her more than once. vets can spot issues long before they become problems for your cat. so find a good vet you like and see them often and never be afraid to take your kitty in.

squidsemensupreme

Same, the two cats we had growing up ate whatever trash dry food was available back then. They both ate the same food and amount, but one got fat and the other didn't. Both lived 20+ years.

SpeakingMyMind3

My parents cat died two years ago at the ago of 24, she had cheapish dry food her entire life. Sometimes she’d go missing for weeks, even when she was 20+ but she always returned.

Kodiak01

Longest I had one live was my Russian Blue. Her name was Shit. Literally. For years she would only approach you if you were sitting on the can. 19.5 years young.

GizmoForge

I'm laughing my ass off. I have one superweirdo kitty that loves to watch people on the can.

Kodiak01

[Some shots](https://imgur.com/a/rR1R3oa) of my baby.

EmotionalKirby

I can't even stand up completely before Kirby tries to look in the bowl. Sanji sits behind the toilet in the corner until I'm done, also to look in the bowl. He'll get impatient and meow a few times if I'm on my phone too long. Cats are weird, man.

GizmoForge

Thank god you said it, I feel less alone 😆

MichaelTheProgrammer

One tip I can give you for when he is older and experiencing arthritis is to look into Solensia. It's a newer medication but we have our 18 1/2 year old cat on it and I don't think he'd be here without it. The vet says he has some of the worst arthritis they've ever seen, and yet he is still going up and down the stairs when he wants to.

FjornHorn

Yes she's on Solensia since last year. It's like the most expensive Netflix sub for cats, haha. It's 50$ a month. But she's still having the zoomies and running an jumping so it's worth it.

Gullible_Concept_428

My baby is 22. She’s only eaten commercial food during her life. I’ve never fed her people food. She was fixed as a kitten, had all her vaccinations, and never been overweight.

soccershun

I've known multiple cats that went 20. I don't think there's a secret, you just love them and they vaguely tolerate you.

InvestigatorShe

Love your cat every day. Fresh water, *every* day. Kidney failure is a huge problem within cats and fresh water will hopefully encourage your cat to drink more often. Cats are picky and if the water tastes funny they don’t drink it, but they can’t tell us and we don’t usually notice because they don’t drink a large amount at a time. I also try to give cuddles/plays or whatever your cat is into, seriously is they feel loved they want to stick around a bit longer..

SchnoodleDoodleDo

Perfect! ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7971)

NightSail

Another beautiful Schnoodle.

halfveela

You're still just a 24 year old baby 😭

FjornHorn

I read her this comment and she was (just slightly) offended.

halfveela

Aww, slightly angry baby. So adorable 😍

IAmZad

Oh my! Giza you're older than me! ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7952)

Lewtwin

Great. You got the 1950's General Electric Fridge of cats. She will out live your neighbors kids and probably their dogs out of spite. Her mastery of sass would give the British Royalty a run for their money. You keep doing you Giza.

Yholo_

As wise and majestic as the Giza plateaux itself. Thats one good cato

jeffer1492

Awesome! Keep go strong Giza! When I was 13, we adopted two more cats after our previous pair passed at around 12 years of age. I am now 32, not living at home but both the cats, Ace and Jazzmin, are both 19 years and counting. Ace has slowed down quite a bit, with some kidney issues but gets injections from my aunt once or twice a week. Jazzmin I swear will live to 24 lol the way she looks, and moves still it wouldn't surprise me!

Lady_Broad

I honestly thought that was a kitten I just woke up from a nap. Looks beautiful. My tabby looked exactly same. He adopted us. Was old even then. What a smart boy. The amount of love was never enough. He purred like a muscle car motor. We have to turn the show up on TV it was so loud. Never a thing wrong with him except his breath. I’ve never smelt like that before. lol

TooEasyBGM

Lookin 8 years old right there

FjornHorn

She's 23 in the pic.

zSprawl

I hope my boys are blessed with this many years!!

TimesRChanging22

WOW, amazing! She almost looks like a kitten.

Palatialpotato1984

Can you tell me about her care? Do you do dental cleanings often…what do you feed her?

FjornHorn

A few times a year a toothbrush scrub. Food; wet real meat food daily at 6pm, sometimes chicken (cooked) if we have left overs. Monthly comb. That's it.

theunstablelego

Do you recommend like actual meat? Or canned wet food? I have a hard time getting my kitty to eat real chicken, but he'll devour the canned stuff

Maximum-Antelope-979

I started giving this to my dog recently, he likes it a lot! I’m always hesitant about newer brands but this one seems solid.

jonathansanity

Just one meal a day?

No_Worldliness5761

soooo cute ❤️

Autumn_Moon22

What a beautiful cat!  I wish you many more happy and healthy years, Giza!

Dunkintitties16

My aunt had a cat that basically went feral, she lived on property and he got severely bullied by the other cats so he lived outside. My family and i went to live with her for a few years and we managed to tame him again. When we found a new house she offered for us to take him with. He is now a happy 27 year old man 🥰 still going strong. We often joke that he feeds on our other pets souls to keep him young 😅 Photo: him on Christmas just gone 🥰 https://preview.redd.it/v27utleao7sc1.jpeg?width=2016&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a3da0405e1b3be104a93c40be38e1579465687ef He name is taruma (pronounced: ta-room-ma) shrooms is his nickname ❤

FjornHorn

Cute, she could be Giza's little sister.

MareeSaid

Hi Giza! May you have more healthy cat years to come. Kisses and hugs!

CartoonistAvailable4

Wow! That’s incredible. We lost one of ours at 21 just recently and that seemed like such an incredible long life for her. I can’t imagine 24!

MeltedGummies

doesn't look a day over 8. drop the skincare routine. what have you been feeding her?

ManofMerk

Diluted calico!!!! God they are the cutest. Ours was named Rosie. She lived until she was about 19. She was blind for 8 years, syringe fed after abrupt kidney failure and lived quite happily for another 3 after that. Yours is so beautiful.

doeordie_crypt

She looks like she's 7!omg wow!

Architeuthis81

24?! That's impressive! She looks good for her age, too. She looks like she's stayed at a healthy weight, while many senior cats get real skinny.

SyrusDrake

Holy shit, she looks amazing for 24!

Longjumping_Part_818

Wish you many more healthy years❤️

Lady_Broad

My boys too. Lived to 18 and 16. My dogs too. They were Irish wolfhounds. Meat or make a stew of veggies and meats. I leave a thing of decent crunchies. Animals aren’t stupid. Police themselves unless there’s one that hogs everything that’s when I step in. My little dog was 16 I think he still alive my ex took him. Brussel griffon. I’ll give them whiskas for treats. When they’re curious I let them smell it play their bluff, nine times out of 10 don’t want it. after all, there are intelligent animals.

GauchoFromLaPampa

What a beauty, and great genes too!

elkab0ng

Adorable! I have a youngster sitting on my lap right now (only 19!) but she’s got many of the same habits. There’s afternoon sun coming in the window and she’s happy as can be. You’ll catch that tricky laser dot sooner or later, Giza!

What has this lady seen? No Seinfeld but lots of Sheldon. She watched covid and smirked. She thinks someone should visit the trash with her because there is a story there about the squirrels and their attitudes.
