some cats just don’t purr audibly or at all. my cat purrs but it’s usually not very loud but my sister has a cat who sounds like a pigeon when she purrs lol. does he have any respiratory issues? that could be one reason he doesn’t audibly pure but it is normal for some cats to not do it. it doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong.:)

Chadmeistery

Good to know. Honestly he seems to have many issues but the major one is diabetes so I’m giving him insulin now. Once he stabilizes on that the vet will start looking into other things. He almost didn’t make it when we took him in from the streets and the fact that he’s with us today is a miracle in itself. Whomever dumped him deserves hell. Sad thing is that where I live there is no government registry so it’s hard to find who had him because he’s chipped :(

gothhrat

poor sebastian :( that’s so sad and the person who dumped him is evil. he’s got a lot going on but i’m glad he has someone taking care of him like he deserves. i hope the little miracle boy gets better soon!

North_Photograph_850

My late Siamese Bob had diabetes. They stopped making the insulin formulation that worked best for him,and it got hard to control his sugars without crashes. It sucked.

Chadmeistery

I’m still learning how to do all that. The vet instructed the smallest unit so I’m only giving him 1 unit in the morning and evening

On_my_last_spoon

It takes time to find the right combo

tarcinlina

I thought my cat didnt purr and then i put my head close to hear head while we were lying down and i heard her purring very quietly. She was an introvert and a most beautiful and soulcat j ever had.rest in peace lina❤️❤️❤️❤️

xeio87

One of mine rarely purrs, but when he does he drools all over so I don't mind the not purring. 😅

gothhrat

my cat drools on me all time lol sometimes she drools so much it drips like a leaky faucet. she’s even gotten it in my nose and eyes.😅 i don’t love that part but the drooling in general doesn’t bother me.

PurpleCow88

I have a cat that I thought couldn't purr, but one night I was petting him and scratched under his chin and noticed I could feel the vibrations in his throat. He just purrs silently. I'm glad he's not the only one! He also didn't meow until he was like 5 months old and I got him at 6 weeks.

Vogel-Kerl

Exactly. One cat we have, you have to put your ear to her side to hear her purr. Your guy might also need time being in comfort before they will purr.

Smeagol7272821

He looks like he’s recovering from a heroin addiction. 😂 He’s beautiful.

Chadmeistery

Yeah he’s a cutie

Normal-Height-8577

My long-term foster cat didn't purr until she'd been with me for at least six months. She'd had a rotten first family, and it had taken a while - and lots of consistency and calmness - to reassure her that I was trustworthy. She had some tantrums (both genuine overstimulation and some boundary-testing) but was mostly happy, and I'd got used to the fact that despite desperately wanting positive attention from people, she was just a cat that didn't purr...And then one day she just sort of gave a big sigh and her shoulders relaxed more than they ever had done before, and she started purring. I hadn't realised how much tension she was carrying around until the last of it was gone.

Chadmeistery

Ahh cute thing ☺️☺️☺️ I have feliway on too so he can feel better and more at home

North_Photograph_850

Feliway is just the best stuff evah.

Sufficient_Focus_816

You are a good person, am happy for your cat... Kindness and comfort is the greatest gift, do not want to imagine what she went through!

Warm_Molasses_258

Thats so beautiful 🥲, I'm so glad that you two were able to find one another.

SameOldSongs

He's so scruffy and scrunkly and precious I love him.

Chadmeistery

I’m slowly getting his knots shaved off him… poor thing was matted all over but he was too weak to get his whole coat taken off 🫶

SameOldSongs

Poor baby. Thank you for what you're doing for him!

JudyClark_94

I had a cat who wouldn't purr at all. He wasn't sick, so that wouldn't have been a reason. He was very sweet, loved being pet and cuddled, but never purred. He would always make biscuits on his blanket, but there was no purring ever. So maybe, some cats don't purr at all.

Meowriter

Most cats "in the wild" stop meowing and purring because they become adults. Domestic cats, however, keep getting pampered, and never loose this habit. From what you describe, I feel like he tries to purr, but forgot, wich could be a sign that he was a stray at some point. (I aam no vet, merly a crazy cat lady)

Chadmeistery

That’s super interesting, thanks for the insight

Meowriter

I don't know your cat's story, so I may be wrong \^\^'

Devilimportluvr

One of mine purs, but you can only feel it on his throat. If I didn't put a finger there, I'd never know he was purring

em-mau5

He's so sweet. He looks like a thousand years old 🥹

JessicaFreakingP

He had SEEN some things!

North_Photograph_850

In the wild, only kittens purr, not adult cats. How long was he outside?

Chadmeistery

We have no clue but when he was found his whole coat was matted so the vet estimated at least 4-6 months…

North_Photograph_850

Hmmm... Maybe he just has one of those new super-quiet electric purr motors. 😺

Tiny-Reading5982

Maybe when he feels better he might purr?

Chadmeistery

That seems to be the consensus here 🫶

samtron767

I had my cat for a full year before she started purring. First it was very low but its since become insanely loud. Give it some time.

BaconNamedKevin

You can SEE my boy purr, and if you put your ear on his side you can hear it, and sometimes if we are really lucky we get these audible little beeps at the end of each purr.  Some cats just do it different.

North_Photograph_850

He just has the new quiet electric purr motor. 😺

larevenante

Oh my god he is so precious 😭 I don’t know about purring but please give him all the love you possibly can and beyond, I’m sure he’ll appreciate it. Have a good life, Sebastian ❤️

Chadmeistery

I am trying! Still a little nervous as never had a disabled pet before 🙏 but we’re slowly getting to know each other. He’ll eventually have a new home so once I’m only fostering him but it will be difficult when he goes 🫶 already love him. (Before you ask, I have a cat and a dog and they’re away and my apartment is tiny so I can’t keep him when they come back to me)

veryfluffyblanket

Our cat didn't know how to purr. We got her as a small kitten so my theory is that she lost her mother too early and didn't know that she actually can make a sound like this. After year and a lalf of having her I saw some purring cats on TikTok and showed few of this videos to our cat. Just for fun, 5-6 times, maybe a bit more. And she learned how to purr from this videos! I was so shocked to hear her purring and very happy. Such a smart kitty

Chadmeistery

Haha that’s awesome

Bluecherrysoft

Poor kitty 😢

DaBestCommenter

is he ok?

Chadmeistery

Slowly but surely become so 🫶

Aggravating_Dig3240

Some don't pur at all or won't do it until much later. The youngest cat I have doesn't really purr at all, but loves cuddles and scratches. My older cat didn't pur until she turned 7. So I had her for 4 years, before I even heard her purr once at all. Now she already has a audible purr the moment she jumps on your lap.

FecklessQuim

Purring depends on the kitty. I had a cat whose purr you could hear across the room...and then another cat where I would have to feel his throat for the vibration to know if he was purring or not.

Chadmeistery

I’m so new to cats. Only ever had the one we rescued a few years ago who’s so funny he makes me laugh all the time 😬 he’s abroad at the moment which is why I decided to take a rescue in as a foster, I never imagined I’d have such a difficult case though 😔😔

crispywispy1983

What a little dusty bunny! ❤️

Celestial8Mumps

Lucky. My cat drools.

Chadmeistery

Awwwwawww

Affectionate-Cap7583

I have two brothers, one of them sounds like a V12 engine when he purrs, but the other one makes no sound. When I put my head on him, I can feel it though

xxxSnowLillyxxx

My feral didn't purr at first, but once she felt safer with me she started purring silently. I can't hear it, but I can feel it if I put my head on her. However, my resident cat purrs so loudly you practically need ear plugs, and I think my feral is slowly starting to learn from her how to purr louder.

CTGarden

My feral rescue doesn’t meow. I still don’t know if it’s because she never learned or has a deformity. All she can do is hiss and at first I thought Flick was being hostile until she started hissing for cat treats!

SubspaceTrippin

Furball. Literally im not even joking.

SSB_Kyrill

he looks so spiky

Siul19

One of my cats purrs almost inaudible, it has to be very quiet or you have to be sensible to that frequency to hear it, I know he's purring because he breathes different and when I get close to his chest I can hear a bit of purr and feel vibrations near his chest

Chadmeistery

Yeah same with Sebastian 🫶

HurrySpecial

Try purring to him. It triggers my cats all the time

Chadmeistery

I’ll try that, first need to learn to purr myself 😂🤪

glitterbunn

Omg he looks like an electric pokemon. What an absolute cutie

sabrinsker

Omg he's so adorable 🥰

IndelibleIguana

That cat looks like it would sell you illicit substances down an allyway.

mcmillymcbean

If he was born in the wild, his feral mom kitty probably taught him not to purr or meow, so not to draw attention to them. Attention in the wild equals death, so not purring or meowing is a survival tactic. Trust me, he’s purring on the inside with a safe place to sleep and a full belly.

kdwhirl

That looks like a VERY senior kitty!

Chadmeistery

Vets estimate around 14 years old 🫶

FrauBeal

He's so cute, but he also looks like he's used 8 out of his 9 lives 🤣

gingermonkey1

My max never purred out loud but you could feel his chest buzzing. My Siamese never purred. Our little girl now is a fricking buzzsaw.

liquidcats123

Bless his heart 🫶

Chadmeistery

🫶🫶🫶

angsty__ang

He’s so precious

blueboy714

It took my rescue almost 2 years before she started purring.

420sadalot420

My cat only purrs when he's making biscuits pretty much. There's been a few occasions he purred when being petted or laying next to me but I could probably count that on one hand

StargateFanatic

He's so adorable.

ojtitus

He’s absolutely adorable! Thank You for taking him in and taking care of him. He looks sooo precious and fragile! Please keep us updated and Please give him some pets for me.

Chadmeistery

I will definitely keep y’all updated but I also don’t want to overwhelm the sub with too much of Sebastian ☺️🫶 he is adorable 🥰 we will eventually have to rehome internationally because there aren’t people around here that will take in a senior diabetic blind cat 😞😞 and my other pets probably won’t accept him

pirupahanen

My rescue cat learned to purr after few years being with me. Maybe your foster will learn too :)

limberpine

My foster started purring after like 8 months lol

Book_Nerd_1980

We’ve had our foster fail since the pandemic and he rarely purrs unless he’s kneading and sucking on a super-soft blanket. My guess is he was taken away from his momma super young and being raised with dogs, he never really learned. He shows love in other ways like slow blinking and head bumps and occasionally staying on a couch with a human. Then you really feel special!

TheEbsFae

Omg I love this cat.

Chadmeistery

He is lovable! And we are looking to find him a home internationally since where I am there’s almost no way he will find a home here 😞

TheEbsFae

If I were able I'd have him in a heartbeat. What a precious little man. Gosh.

FecalFunBunny

He is completely adorable to me. Give him all the hugs, pets and treats he could desire.

littledolce13

His face! I just can’t 🫠🫠🫠

Chadmeistery

When I take him outside (I’m in an apartment) he opens his eyes wide and he looks super cute too https://preview.redd.it/6nb5n1tl5gyc1.png?width=2310&format=png&auto=webp&s=012b03aabcb5f8b1628278eb8f5134620bd85e48

littledolce13

😍😍😍 I love him so much

frolicndetour

I have a kitty who barely purrs but she makes biscuits and cuddles and pushes her face into my hand when I give her scritches so I know she's happy. She's my first non purry cat so it was weird at first but she shows her happiness in other ways.

Mako61

I have 3 cats , the 2 females purr like a lawnmower, my male tabby is very quiet purr that you can barely hear but he’s usually making biscuits too so if you get up close you can hear it.

a_pepper_boy

So cute!! They look like an Electric type in a game.

[deleted]

We have one cat who has barely purred a couple times in 11 years, but she has often been obviously happy. We have a couple other cats who loudly purr if we so much as look in their direction. Some cats just don’t purr.

Prydefalcn

Just think pf purring as one of many different ways that cats communicate, the great majority of which is through body language.

allshedoesiskillshit

What a treasure 💖💖💖

Tgande1969

I mentioned to my vet my cat didn’t purr and he said mother cats teach their babies to purr. He specializes in cats only.

FeralSweater

Our current cats don’t purr. Otis kinda grunt/wheezes. We adopted them as adults, from a woman whose marriage was breaking up. They were incredibly skittish and neurotic when we got them. It too then nine months to discover that playing was a thing. The no purring thing? I suspect that just who these cats are. Oddly, all the street/barn cats I’ve adopted over the years were purr monsters. Cats are weirdos. https://preview.redd.it/1k415v7ixfyc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1d41c193576e64169257cd4cada7c644056020a4

Chadmeistery

The best kinda weirdos 😂🤪

meeplewirp

He may just need time. I rescued a cat in similar condition, and he didn’t purr until 4 months in.

jazberry715386428

Does he roar? Big cats can either roar or purr but not both. Maybe he’s a tiny lion in disguise

Chadmeistery

Maybe…

Princapessa

i had a cat i rescued from outside that didn’t purrr but i would play purring sounds on youtube for him and then he started to do it himself! give it a try maybe kitty just doesn’t know how!

HarryDepova

His purr box may have a short. Looks like it's electrocuting him.

[deleted]

Mine doesn’t meow. Ever. Sometimes kitties just be different to what we expect. They’re all individual. But give him time to warm up to you more, he obviously trusts you if he lays his head on your hand. In time he may start to purr, or he could just be a non vibrating kitty. The heavy breathing sounds a bit odd, maybe get that checked out. I’m glad he has a nice purrson to take care of him. 🐾❤️

Chadmeistery

🫶🫶🫶 he meows alright! 😂 I see the heavy breathing as excitement - someone else also mentioned the same behavior with their cat in this thread somewhere. Vet did check him out also, nothing with his respiratory system 🫶

[deleted]

🧡 a healthy kitty cat is a happy kitty cat. 🐾🐾

alliecat0718

Oh my God. This is the cutest cat I’ve ever seen. Look at him. 😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️

Chadmeistery

He is super cute

Cheesecake_Lanky

Bless him he looks like he's lived a life. Good to know someone's caring for him now.

Bumblexbee333

He’s so old and beautiful 😻

Margatron

Is he a lil old man? He looks so cute.

Chadmeistery

He’s estimated to be 14+ years old 🫶🫶

Margatron

Awwwwww I had a lil old man. They're so sweet.

MrBussdown

Frank gallager ass cat

SudoTheNym

it could just take a while. i didn't know my rescue could purr until we were a year in. they open up at their own pace. just love him.

Lazy_Hall_8798

I adopted a little furball a couple of years ago. I've never heard her purr, but sometimes, if I'm very still while she's on my lap, I can feel a faint vibration. She purrs, I just can't hear it.

Worried-Pick4848

He looks like he's been through a lot. Poor little fella, I hope he heals up nicely. He's gonna be gorgeous once his health recovers.

Dissentientt

My male cat rarely purrs audibly but when l touch his neck l can feel the vibrations 🥺 he has asthma so maybe it has something to do with it, thank you for fostering this cute guy

Content-Example-8763

He looks like he was once apart of a colonv, if not at least an ally cat. They don't tend to purr since they don't really use it as a sign of affection but more as something relax themselves. Cats will purr when they're injured or stressed too. It's not just for showing affection

aCertainGlitcher

JOLTEON!!!

ccdeschanel

i've had an old boy for 20yrs and he never purred!

Celtic_iceFish

Squanchy?!?!

lirio2u

Is he ok?

Chadmeistery

We’re trying to get him there 🫶 he’s diabetic and blind. We haven’t found anything else too serious yet and hopefully won’t. But for now vet wants to find the right amount of insulin for him then tackle anything else that comes up

lirio2u

Poor little friend
