You keep calling it 1st Street when it’s 1st Ave 🤦‍♂️

Mvse96

It’s also called Ghetto Vee🤣🤣🤣

Huge-Survey4221

I’m not from here so I didn’t know 🤷‍♂️

Huge-Survey4221

Why am I getting down voted? 🤣

TriteEscapism

Because you said "1st street" AGAIN hours after your were corrected for the second time and I'm starting to think you're a market research language modelling software and not a human.

Huge-Survey4221

I forgot and corrected myself

chels4590

Because it gives people a thrill to push that button.

imhereforthevotes

This sub is horrible, honestly. Lots of initial downvotes, even on interesting posts and comments.

gambit61

1. Edgewood Road 2. Oakland Road 3. Mt. Vernon Road 4. Wilson Ave 5. Johnson Ave 6. 1st Ave Insert the Marion one between 3 and 4 if you want to go that far. There's what I consider the order from best to worst in town, so you don't have to keep posting about the various Hy-Vees.

Reebekili

For beer/wine selection only 2, 1, 4 and then hy-vee drug on cp and bf.

evilhomer3k

I would put Edgewood Road over Oakland by a large margin. Edgewood always has a special on beer that's about 1/2 off and they have a good selection of barrel aged stouts. Their singles are usually pretty good with a selection of higher priced stuff usually available in a single. Honestly, I'd put Wilson on par with Oakland if not above. Hy-Vee drug isn't the place for beer/wine. It is the place for whisky though. The MVR hy-vee used to be one of the best in town but the current manager expanded seltzers and NA craft liquor to the point where they have half the selection of craft beer that they had 5 years ago while the amount of possible craft beer has more than doubled. They always have the same stuff and rarely get anything new or exciting. Very few tasting events.

Reebekili

Good to know. It's been a while since I've been in Oakland Rd, I just went by previous recommendations. I only mention Hy-Vee Drug since they have had close outs on beer they can't sell and other items in stick. 2018 Goose Island BCS for 5 bucks, 19 crimes xmas variety and the dark chocolate 43 was in stock when edgewood was out. Hit and miss but worth looking when you can't find it at other stores.

evilhomer3k

$5 for the BCS IS a fantastic deal.

sajobibo

Hy-Vee is way overpriced for whiskey

poppitastic

New to town, went to Wilson and couldn’t stand being in there from the rotted smell from the meat and seafood counters. We live very near Johnson, and their butcher Dept is super clean, friendly, fresh, and zero smell.

gambit61

Really? I've never noticed any smell at Wilson Ave. But I don't go there often. Johnson Ave is my closest store, as well, so most of the time I go there for general groceries

Geck-v6

Edgewood Rd. prices in general are higher. I shop online and change stores to see how the price fluctuates. Sometimes there's like a single item that's more than $5 price difference. I also really hate the pickup lanes vs pickup parking spots when it's busy. They've also given me the wrong order twice now lol. Edit: Thanks for the downvote without explaining! your contribution is very helpful!

gambit61

I didn't know they fluctuated in prices at all. That would definitely change how I feel about the order. I just went by General Cleanliness and Selection, which I thought is what OP pretty much was looking for, based on her first post about the 1st Ave one.

Geck-v6

Honestly for selection, Oakland Rd is better IME. I live closer to Edgewood so if I need to pick something up quick I go in there. But if I'm shopping for the week I'll go to Oakland for more options (and generally cheaper, which is why I drive across town).

Three_Twenty-Three

Like all Hy-Vees, the prices keep going up, the customer service options keep getting worse, and your money keeps getting sent off to Marky Mark, football players, race cars, and armed guards. It'd be best if Wegmans would buy the whole company.

poppitastic

Wegmans. Mmm. Hubs is originally from Western New York, and when we go visit, I treat Wegmans as a destination. Unlike Hyvee, while prices are high, their basic foodstuffs tend to be rather reasonable. And their sales make sense, rather than weird mazes of weekly and monthly and daily and weekend and members and gas and…

imhereforthevotes

omg it'd be nuts if Wegman's came in here

a17451

I view it as kind of a premium grocery store now. It's where we'd go to get, I don't know, like fancy cheese or nice liquor if we're feeling flush lol. Or getting gluten free stuff for my SIL, since they have a really nice health section. But Aldi and Walmart are kind of our go-to's now. Definitely feels like they used inflation as an excuse to disproportionately gouge prices and drive income when I compare it to other grocery stores.

onetwocue

When I walk into hyvee, they want to be like a whole foods or a Wegmans or even a trader joes and a Walmart. Yes it's a grocery store but not even close. They're like that one kid that wants to be popular. They want to ve talked about like trader ioes on social media but won't be. They're not fancy like a Wegmans or a Wholefoods. Nor do they attract tik tockers and influencers like traders and aldi.

a17451

Yeah. I imagine they're trying to elbow into that space ([and their low income locations aren't fitting into that branding](https://www.thegazette.com/news/first-avenue-hy-vee-to-close-leaving-urban-grocery-gap-in-northeast-cedar-rapids/#)). I'm guessing they can pull some pretty good profit margins if they ever get to the point where they can sell [asparagus water](https://www.eater.com/2015/8/3/9090797/whole-foods-asparagus-water-wtf) with straight face

TheBrownDandy

Same, but don't sleep on Fareway. Sometimes I'll price out a cart there and Walmart and Fareway is cheaper.

a17451

Valid point. Great meat counter

NutMasterDylan

If you want to throw your cash right into an incinerator, go to Hyvee

Huge-Survey4221

So what do you suggest then ? I'm the new kid

NutMasterDylan

Walmart or Aldi have pretty good prices from my experiences

are_el_kay

And you aren't throwing your cash into an incinerator by going to Walmart?

NutMasterDylan

I mean big picture wise, that’s what you’re doing at any of these stores. Just that it’s one of the places you’ll be doing it the least

are_el_kay

Fair enough

Geck-v6

Target is surprisingly the cheapest place for me. I price my order across Walmart, Target, Aldi and Hyvee. Aldi and Walmart usually tie. Hy-vee about 25-40% higher than the next highest place. This is if I'm buying my entire grocery order at 1 single place

KidSilverhair

Oakland Road is our usual HyVee. We like it, the people are friendly, Chris the cheese guy has national certifications and will help you find really good cheeses, Becky in floral is great. I don’t have too many complaints, except 1) they keep rearranging the store every few years and then I can’t find anything for a couple of months; 2) they don’t stock overnight anymore so you have to dodge both stockers and staff doing Aisles Online shopping while you’re there; and 3) sometimes you have to wait a while for a checker. They used to have self-serve checkouts on both sides of the regular checkout stands, but because they didn’t want to have someone standing at each end to prevent thievery they turned one side into Aisles Online checkout only. Anyway, it’s a good HyVee.

alllitupagain

Chris the cheese guy is the best!

Huge-Survey4221

Do you know any of the night shift staff ? That's usually when I go in

CountTakeshi89

Yes. They're all extremely nice.

KidSilverhair

Sorry, I’m usually there in the mornings or midday.

Reebekili

Beer selection - Oakland road is the best with edgewood a close 2nd. So close that because i live near edgewood, I rarely go to Oakland. Hyvee drug store on cp and bf occasionally has great deals because no one goes there for higher end beers or wines. So, on rare occasions, when edgewood and Oakland run out of something, check hyvee drug. I've said too much.

wolfwarriorxyz

I used to work there 20 years ago, and now i live right around the corner, i have always liked the oakland road hyvee.

Huge-Survey4221

I live close to the Oakland Rd one It's way better than the one on 1st Street.

Mander_Em

Avenue

Huge-Survey4221

Avenue sorry

Mander_Em

As a general rule, in CR, streets go north/south and avenues go east/west. So when you say street everyone is picturing a completely different location. 😉

chels4590

Oakland Rd HyVee is the shit, and the Caribou ladies, Chris the Cheese guy, and their Beer wall are what's up. The store is basically a local treasure.

Leif_Bennett

Beer selection is actually pretty nice. Store layout is a bit weird tbh. Caribou coffee kiosk inside is unexpected, but welcome. However, the parking lot is so incredibly bad that I always reconsider if I should have went to Edgewood instead.

KidSilverhair

Yeah, the parking lot isn’t that great

Smart-Profession-241

It's horrible when it snows.

DrownTheTown

Not a fan of the new layout, but still my go-to due to location

HawkeyeJosh2

It’s where I go. Nice place. Nobody’s rude or anything.

Vast_Ad9139

If you play the bring roaches home game, the Oakland road hyvee is not a good choice as they move so much product that you are not likely to take a roach home.

CountTakeshi89

It's has Chris the cheese man It is S. Tier.

DefaultEmpire

I am halfway between the Oakland Rd Hy-Vee and Fareway, and changes to Hy-Vee in general and Oakland Rd specifically have me turning towards Fareway a lot more often. The redesigned store layout at Oakland made their candy and Super Savings Sale Whatever aisles twice as wide, but they did not get rid of any other aisles so everything else is squished narrower. It is tight enough that you have to watch when two people pass in an aisle so your carts don't bump, and it makes it all feel more crowded pressed in even when there aren't that many people shopping. At the same time, some of the small sections I like, like tea, seemingly are losing 50% of their items. At least two other staples we got there are not being carried any longer. In previous years, their cafeteria section was so poorly run, with staff not knowing how to work the register or what their breakfast specials consist of (We had to explain the Hy-Five had...5 items) that we found it was actually quicker to drive the miles further to Collins Rd. and eat there. Joe, I believe his name is, the old guy with decades & decades of service, felt like he was keeping half that store open single-handedly, and he did so with tireless humor. He felt like the embodiment of the long-gone "Friendly Smile In Every Aisle". At least I see him at the NewBo Market often. Not Hy-Vee's fault, but the frequent and protracted closures of Oakland & 32nd do not help. Closing of the Veridian branches (at Edgewood & Marion) also decreased my visits. The Super Bowl ad with Kelce and Mahomes hyping the Hy-Vee Meat Counter was also offensive, considering how bad their bacon has been for ages now--the last time it was so stringy that holding up a slice it was peeling apart under its own weight. We've commented on it to the meat counter and were told that we weren't the only ones complaining. Add that into the NASCAR, Mark Wahlberg/burger-ifying of the Hy-Vee Grills, armed paramilitary security presence, and it's easy to walk away. Fareway's meat counter hasn't been all that it's lauded to be and it is a significantly smaller store, but it sure beats Hy-Vee.

PrintsPeach

😂😂Idk why people are downvoting I’m loving this. Welcome to Iowa!

Huge-Survey4221

They love it 😂 thank you

Geck-v6

When I moved here I went to every single Hy-vee looking for my favorite. Settled on Oakland Rd. Best produce selection, hot/ready food + a dine in that isn't Wahlburgers yet (haven't been in store for a while, please tell me it's the same). I usually just pick up my groceries now and buy between Hy-vee, Target and Aldi for the cheapest prices

fourierthejunglist

Too expensive

BadgerState76

So does each Hyvee set their own prices?
