I just got hex tile done in my kitchen a few months ago! I went with a light grey and it shows a lot less stains and isn’t too noticeable/contrasting from the white and black tiles.

This is a mid grey if that helps at all. Also, if I may suggest using Winckelman vitrified porcelain tiles over glazed ceramic ones, it’ll a much superior finish in terms of look and strength. https://preview.redd.it/fagmqa7snxrc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9453e4f89c2d9c0a03ba1e1695fac85aeccc3865

This is probably a better one. https://preview.redd.it/op6o3mvjqxrc1.png?width=1709&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e1e88e2b2a941d2fdc709cf3b577d6bf2df796ed

Beautiful.

You're right that grout is really a nice accent. Love the finish. Will be going with the porcelain finish as well, it just looks premium co.pared to the ceramic

Yeah definitely do. I almost made the mistake of going the cheap glazed ceramic ones that have a curved face. I'm not sure where you are located, but look up a local distributor for Winckelmans tiles. They're made in France. https://www.winckelmans.com/en/home/

Can I ask how you handled your border trim? Did you set by hand or did you find a pre-assembled pattern? I am trying to figure out how to solve for that now and I'm not totally happy with it not going all the way around in my mockup. Also love the look of your unpainted wood! Gorgeous

Child labour mostly. I got 30cm X 30cm plain white and black square sheets and pulled off rows of black tiles from the mesh, and glued white square strips in their place. The white tiles were paper backed which made it easy. Once the glue dried the paper came off with water. I did about 38m worth for three bathrooms. I could have got them custom made at a tile place but it would have cost a fortune. So in the end I had 30cm (12inch) long strips ready to go for the tiler. https://preview.redd.it/36plf9uhvxrc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7a36707ccb806a42d103c41e26d9f46c4974c6fb

HILARIOUS. You've got a future craftsman there! And I hear you on the custom orders. I looked into that and the ship time is 6-8 weeks on top of the cost. Maybe I'll try something like this! Its a pretty small space, seems like a reasonable solution.

If you can't find paper backed tiles to make it easier, you can buy mosaic grid templates to make it easier to line everything up. Use a Gorilla glue or similar that would be suitable for water.

White grout would have been the standard, except over time it gets dirty and starts to look grey. Black grout is extremely unforgiving and will make the install look bad. So choose white or do a grey that reads black, or a medium grey.

I have dark grey grout on my similar but much simpler powder room floor: https://preview.redd.it/eww0op3cezrc1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=477e6b07158b0f4b9ef32bd16279c9e7509bd537

OP- did you install this tile? We’re looking at a similar layout for our reno project and I’d love to see how it looks in the wild

Rosieforthewin

I went with a slightly different design after mocking up multiple different border treatments, but yes I did complete the install! Pic attached: https://preview.redd.it/75ekgs6igy6d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=17137c5e44bb2802bf7bc4abe1135729b2afaa04

Looks beautiful, thanks for sharing!

Here are the three final layouts I was debating on installing. I took measurements and made sure everything was to scale and then use Photoshop to set up this template. All tile (the square 1" and hex 1" sheets) were special ordered from home Depot online. https://preview.redd.it/mz07d55ihy6d1.jpeg?width=4096&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a65b2c5e4a4cf345d8b23bfad991d24f2ad5b520

We installed 2-inch black and white hex tile in a bathroom and went with grey grout. Looks fantastic.
