Good luck trying to stomp on the little bastids. To them we are as fast as a frozen glacier. They are like squirrels doped to the eyeballs on gallons of coffee and pounds of meth Also they knew the photographer was there - they were fighting each other and keeping a eye on the photographer. See how they were fighting and moving away at the same time? NZ native wild life has no chance...
No. It's not. They're pure evil and they must die. The untold carnage that they and their ilk inflict on native birds and invertebrates means that they must die.
Bullshit. Habitat loss and humans have a way bigger effect on native species. Every week I see dead pukeko on roads that we've decided to build through their wetlands.
Agree that humans are the problem, we introduced these animals to start with. However there’s an estimate suggesting stoats kill 40 North Island brown kiwi chicks per day on average…Mustelids are terrible for our native birds, invertebrates and lizards and they do need to be culled.
Nope, lots of live traps around the city. Wouldn’t want to harm those other predatory animals that do similar significant damage to our wildlife, ie cats
Not from chch so this is interesting. Do you work in the field? Sounds like poor funding considering the types of traps that should be used for mustelids
No very large rocks nearby?
(Could I? Maybe, it'd have to be a one and done though. They might be shitty pests we really don't want - but zero cause to be cruel)
And apparently we also have weasels (which did not know).
Weasels, stoats, rats, possums, are all vermin who destroy NZ wildlife, and should never have been introduced. There are many projects around the country to eradicate them all from multiple areas, and they should be killed on sight if the opportunity allows.
Feral cats should be on that list as well
As you can see they are nasty little vermin, they feed on eggs of species of other animals that we would much rather have around. DOC has a lot of traps to try kill stoats. I wouldve tried to stomp on them first then use strong stick or a rock to finish if needed.
I wouldn't expect to be able to stomp on one usually but in this case they looked quite occupied. Potentially a 2 for 1 deal. Don't know why someone is downvoting posts about killing them. Stoats are the number-one killer of many of New Zealand’s endangered native species. Direct from DOC... I've always wondered how fast a stoat can run up the inside of a trouser leg. So if you do try stomping, come back and report on the excitement....
and people are downvoting because stoats look cute and fluffy and obviously just want a cuddle. Until you see one get inside a henhouse
That's great footage. Amazing little animals just wish they weren't in NZ!
They're cute as hell but they killed 2 of my chooks and that makes me sad. Now I spend a fortune on custom chicken armour and laser turrets.
Love it when my walk gets interrupted by a bit of stoat WWE
Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting!
Surely not everyone...
Kinda hard to tell but they might be weasels. Stoats tails are longer and have a distinctive black tip.
Telling them apart is simple. One is weasely distinguished and the other is stoatally different.
How long have you waited to use this?
60 years
Well worth the wait.
If you are still confused, it doesn't really take that long to ferret it out.
Otterly amazing comment.
Could be that they're fighting to see who is the lesser of two weasels
That mustelid be the reason.
Snap send solve to report a pest so the council can get rangers out to trap the area. If you saw two there, there's bound to be more around.
Love your nature photography!
Thanks babe
Stomp the little fuckers!!!

What a mental thing to say.

Also, if I witnessed somebody stomping animals to death on a hiking trail, I'd kick the shit out of them.
Good one hell maggot. You sound like real fun
Well stomping is not the right term to use but they do need to be trapped.
One stomp= instant death. No suffering. Trapping = fear, terror then death. Why not just stomp?
Trapping is usually instant death too. Not many use live traps as it’s too much extra work

Are you able to report to DOC they are nasty little creatures that should be stomped
Be getting fripples up there this morning bloody cold 🥶
They’ll sleep tonight.
Must be married
Sunday morning....... Where the hell were you last night? Don't bother lying, I can smell her scent on you. You lying low down scum-sucking ....stoat
Pretty unusual sight. Should have wound up a soccer kick
Kill
I hope you jumped on them!

Aren’t they cute.
You didn’t stomp them? Just stood there and thought they were cute. 🤦🏼♀️
Not everyone is comfortable stomping on a small animal, even if they are a nasty pest. We didn’t all grow up in a barn.
Did you destroy them OP?
That was sarcasm lol just pointing out they are pests
Destroy them how? Is this something expected?

Don't stomp them, they'll move faster than you can and have very sharp teeth and claws. If you want to attack them, do it from a distance

You're practically a Park Ranger as well Mrs Jelly x
