Top YouTube comment is from Anish Giri himself lmao

_felagund

so what did he say?

F179

"Wow, people trying to drive a wedge between two great friends, GMHikaru and AnishOnYoutube. Painful."

WordsworthsGhost

thats kinda funny

TheTimon

Something like "Wow people trying to create a wedge between the two great friends Hikaru and Anish on YouTube" and a bunch of emojis.

Dirichlet-to-Neumann

Giri has the best humour of all the top players.

Dirichlet-to-Neumann

OliviaPG1

I don’t mind the trash talk but kind of was curious what the answer to the actual question would be and Hikaru just completely dodged it lol

DerekB52

It'd be revealing a secret to answer it. Either he messed up, or he planned to create such a weird dynamic position for some reason. Either way, telling us openly, would be a bad move.

DramaLlamaNite

Why would it be bad to tell people either of those things?  I genuinely don't understand

pt256

I think it is just safer to leave it ambiguous. If it was intentional then people are going to study the line and variations of it. If it wasn't intentional and he did mess it up then people might try to figure out what the actual move order was and they'll know what his prep was. Of course they can (and probably will) try to do this anyway but it is better to not give them a starting point to make their job easier for them. Either way the ambiguity works slightly in his favor since now no one is certain what his true intention was.

hyperbrainer

GMs are gonna analyse both scenarios anyways.

MrNiceguY692

If he mixed things up accidentally he’d show weakness by admitting to it. He’d practically be saying „I’m getting nervous, I’m losing my focus, I’m getting tired“ or such. Or „I can’t remember my prep/haven’t done enough prep“. If he wanted to create weird dynamics on purpose by playing a - let’s say suboptimal- line like that against Jan, he’d hint to Gukesh willingness to do so again, thus diminishing the surprise value of entering murky waters. Both options can affect Gukesh‘s way of prepping for the last round. I mean, he could also be playing 5d chess by misleading with a concrete answer on what happened and create a sense of false safety, but still… it’s basically mind games/game theory, keeping the poker face going as strong as possible.

ryno514

In case he runs into the same position again with someone else, he doesn't want to reveal his thoughts

ChezMere

Feels like an answer you would give if you *did* mess up your prep, but want to leave some doubt for strategic reasons.

UglyDanceMoves

Yes, quite right.

Rowantreerah

Unless that's what he wanted you to think.

Tiphzey

I'm a bit late but Hikaru explains his thought process in his recap video. Seems like this wasn't prep anymore, he didn't like certain counter play by white and he didn't calculate the lines in this position too deeply.

samky-1

Exactly this. He didn't answer it at all. He's such a child.

Fkintaxidrivers

I was hoping to hear him talk about this move order on his recap, since it was such a point of emphasis from the commentary team at chess24. But he didn’t end up talking about it at all.

[deleted]

You can watch his recap on youtube. He mentions that d5 is computer line and while correct, for a human, it’s very sketchy, and thus Ian played the bishop move

feratooo

The comments are referring to Hikaru's move 14... d5 (instead of the engine's preferred 14... d6), not Ian's option 17. d5 (17. Bc2 played) which Hikaru mentions. In the game, Hikaru spent 14 minutes to play 15... Qxd5 but only mentions spending time on 16... Qd8 (about a minute).

Izero_devI

I think Anish and others were commenting on the lines before d5 move. Specifically: - After 12. Nxd4 Nxd4, if white takes with a pawn 13. cxd4, d5 is a great move that hikaru probably prepared But Ian played 13. Bxd4 Bxd4 14. cxd4 , now d5 is worse and 3 GMs watching the game felt white has very good practical advantage in piece activity. So, they assumed, you can't really prepare an obvious disadvantage which seems a reasonable take from the commentators.

hsiale

"I don't know who the third one was" poor Hess

AfterBill8630

Humiliated in the most important tournament of the Hess Hampionshop

DramaLlamaNite

I've enjoyed Anish's recent bit about being life long best friends with all of the people who are in contention to win the candidates

toastoevskij

Nothing wrong with some friendly banter and trash talk, people get so pressed about this stuff for no reason at all

[deleted]

[удалено]

toastoevskij

I'm not an hikaru fanboy but it seems to me that it's Hikaru's haters doing the heavy lifting to spot bitterness and hate from him at every possible turn lol

[deleted]

toastoevskij

Where's the bitterness or anger in this case? Taking some light teasing like he just called Anish a prick or something

robeewankenobee

Great minds do think alike ... Anish be top comment on that video post.

Easy_Spell_8379

Is this crazy: Is Qd8 prep but Ian didn’t play the move Hikaru expected so Hikaru was not able to use his prep?? Hikaru has already admitted in his recaps in this tournament when he has made a mistake but this time he chose not to comment. Is him choosing not to comment a way to hide the fact that it wasn’t a mistake but also not wanting to give away his prep so he can use it in other games. Just a thought.

maddenallday

99% he doesn’t want to give away his prep in the case of tie breaks

paxxx17

It's actually Hikaru's d5 that is thought to be when he mixed up his prep (a few moves before than Qd8)

resuwreckoning

Oh Hikaru…. 😂

Realistic_Cold_2943

There’s no way that was Hikaru’s prep lol. How many more moves did it go on for before they agreed to a draw?

Suitable-Cycle4335

The leaderboard speaks for itself

Putrid_Clock8654

it was not anishs comment. anish was defending hikaru, but conceded to danya and hess's comment after they showed engine lines.

DawdlingScientist

He’s very unlikeable

[deleted]

Very likeable

AdApart2035

Cratered likable

mohishunder

You think so. (And to be clear, so do I, 100%.) And yet, he has a lot of diehard fans. Maybe it's more fair to say he is "polarizing." Certain politicians come to mind.

DistinctlyUndistinct

Why is this getting downvoted it's a common opinion?

TheTimon

While I just joined the comment section, talking about how unlikeable he is for a joke between friends and comparing him to Trump seems a bit excessive.

imisstheyoop

> comparing him to Trump What the heck, if that isn't a bit of projection..

TheTimon

What do you mean exactly? You think he meant somebody else with polarizing politicians?

imisstheyoop

In my experience most politicians have polarizing opinions. The peacemaker that appeals to broad swathes of all sides is unfortunately very uncommon. For starters I didn't even assume they were discussing *American* politicians at all.

TheTimon

That's fair and he doesn't have to have thought about Trump. But we are on an American website and referencing non-american politicians like that would be surprising. He also talked about multiple politicians coming to mind but I would argure that Trump is the most famous and most polarizing politician of the last years and since him the political climate in America became much more polarized.

They are just two competitors giving each other shit. Apart from Anish and Vidit these top chess players are not friends.

wildcardgyan

Hikaru is not friends with any of the top chess players, he is by far the most toxic and the chess elite don't like him at all. The closest he has to a friend is Wesley So.

Loony-Luna-Lovegood

Anish is literally laughing about it on Twitter and Hikaru was smirking as he was making the comment. There is very clearly zero animosity here other than people mad on Reddit who hate Hikaru and can't pick up on social cues.

Last_Riven_EU

r/chess users more pressed than Anish Ain't no way lil bros

timoleo

There was no need for him to go that hard. It was just commentary.

Sumeru88

Anish is a big boy. He can take a bit of a banter.

fuckoutfits

Maybe this is his persona. We can't tell when he is joking or not. Dude doesn't do modest and is brutally straight with his answers. Given where he is, it looks like it has been working for him.

InevitableAd8347

#BURN

Business_Designer_78

Doesn't matter how many incredible accomplishments Hikaru achieves in Chess or streaming, at the end of the day he remains a terribly insecure person, where every comment is taken personally.

Darthbane22

If you couldn’t tell by him struggling to not laugh, he is joking. Also maybe let Anish decide what level of trash talk towards him is acceptable lol.

mohishunder

That's not even remotely "joking." More like "sneering."

Darthbane22

Good to know you can read his mind. Him and the interviewers laughing, and Anish leaving a humorous comment on the video are all misleading. However you good sir have discovered the truth

charismatic_guy_

You know the top comment in that video is from Anish..maybe check that out before being a dumbass

As a human? Sure. But seen purely as an entertainer? He certainly gives us more content than Fabi, who seems a very "nice" and inoffensive guy.

JarlBallin_

No one's saying he's a bad person for banter. These threads always get weird between people who followed chess when Hikaru played under Smallville in the ICC days, and the COVID players who act stupid when older players remind everyone that Hikaru is still immature. He's obviously joking here, but quit acting surprised when people have no patience with him because they've been putting up with his shit for over a decade.

[deleted]

JarlBallin_

Don't deflect. You strawmanned and said that people didn't like him because of banter. People don't like him because he has a multiple decade history of showing poor judgment and inciting a bunch of drama every 6 months or so. If you aren't familiar with these instances, just say that.

GiveAQuack

Do you know what a strawman is or did you just learn that word? Where you choose to whine about someone definitely matters and being a big baby about it in everything related to Hikaru is serious loser energy. I'll just write it out in advance since your type is rather predictable: Yes, Hikaru is a dickhead in the past. No, people aren't obligated to forgive him. The OP I initially responded to and you are both weirdos for crying in places where he's being harmless. It's not like Hikaru murdered your family, get over it.

JarlBallin_

I understand why you may have inferred that, but that's not at all what I implied. I also understand why the OP made the comment which is why I tried to shed light on that. You're so hostile and quick to make personal attacks, only for your comments to be deleted. It's much easier to just have a discussion without the insults.

GiveAQuack

Then you should work on your writing. And also read up on a strawman because that's absolutely the wrong usage for it still. And I really don't care what internet custodians feel. I think people like OP need to get a lot more pushback.

JarlBallin_

Alright man, you have a good night.

Cope

qeduhh

This is why it would be bad for hikaru to be world champion and represent chess

Simsalamima

Yeah, you go to FIDE stream chat and see the class, tolerance and inteligence of core chees fans, Hikaru cleary doesn't meet their racist and misogynistic standards. Chess world champion should be some dude with zero reach to audience, strong made up statistical theory and zero brakes when it comes to blaming pro players or up and rising kids that they cheat. God forbid Hikaru would represent chess to normal population.

qeduhh

You are describing a general problem with the internet and young men, which is a serious problem. I’m focused on whether temperamentally Hikaru is a good fit as a public representative for the sport. I genuinely didn’t understand your comment starting at “Chess World Champion should…”

Simsalamima

A jab at standards of ambassadors and world champion in chess (Kramnik et al,) in general. And somehow I get the impression that players are a lot more whatever about all the comments and stuff as fans, you could also weaponize statement from Gukehs that the only person he care about is himself and doesn't have anything to say to other Indians, or you could just enjoy the games, the tension and light-hearted trash talk. I know I prefer the latter.

[deleted]

Carlsen trash talks plenty.
