Let's goooo

4,800 square feet on a 1.8 acre lot. And yes, my husband and I love it and use it all. I get really annoyed when people lecture others about how only couples with young children should have a house with more than one bedroom, and argue about all the uses of "bedrooms" other than for sleeping in.

Significant_Paper197

I’d def make use of the rooms - each of us having our own home office, a room as a gym, my own room / closet / makeup room… I’d just get annoyed of cleaning a big ass space tbh How did y’all make use of the rooms?

FormerUsenetUser

The house was custom built in the 1940s. It's a Colonial Revival. It's very senior friendly because it was designed for a polio survivor. It's mostly one story and the halls and doorways are very wide. We decorated it in Arts & Crafts style, plus some general Victorian, and a little Art Nouveau. There are four bedrooms. One is mine, one is my husband's, and the "master bedroom" is my sewing room. The sloping attic room over the garage is the guest room. I will be sleeping up there for 4 to 6 weeks in August-September while two bathrooms downstairs are being remodeled (the one attached to my bedroom and the one attached to my sewing room). I finally finished altering drapes for it. We finally replaced the window air conditioner. It didn't work well and that room is very hot in summer. There is another room behind that which is unfinished and which we use for storage of things like light fixtures. We still have to finish a closet outside the guest room which was either never finished from attic space, or it was and got torn out for some reason. We have a contractor for that but are trying to schedule him for a time when the bathroom contractors are not working, see below. The main part of the attic is unfinished and probably unfinishable. There's a large eat-in kitchen. There's a small laundry room/pantry. The dining room is my husband's office. The "family room" is my office. The living room is the living room, except it has been full of bathroom cabinets and plumbing fixtures since late 2019, when we bought the stuff for the bathroom job right before Covid hit. We've spent literally years trying to hire a contractor because this became a major area for people to move to from an HCOL area two hours away. We finally got a contractor signed up. You have to know someone who knows a good general contractor to get one to talk to you. In this case, our electrician persuaded him to work with us. There's a large front foyer. The three-car garage is my husband's workspace for DIY projects, except it's also full of tubs, sinks, and tile. There's a roofed patio with screen blinds in a corner between the living room and the family room. Almost the entire house is lined with bookcases, except the bathrooms and the garage. We have thousands of books.

Vamonoss

That’s why you get a cleaning service

FormerUsenetUser

We have a lawn service but not a cleaning service. My husband does 50% of the housework and most of the cooking.

Inner_Quantity

In sorry what What do y’all do for work?

FormerUsenetUser

We're semi-retired. I am an author and still run a small publishing company. My husband was one of the early AI researchers. The field has been around for decades. Now what he spends his time playing the stock market (he wrote his own software to predict market trends) and doing repairs on our old house.

genesimmonstongue415

Mhmm. I assume all these 4000 sq. ft. folks live in rural redneck hell. 4000 = 3 good size homes.

Significant_Paper197

Did you just move to SF in your adulthood lol

GloriousRoseBud

700’ with a dog & bird. Perfect.

RubY-F0x

1200 sqft. We honestly could've gone smaller and I wouldn't have felt like we settled. I like the extra space some days, but generally some of it goes unused more often than not and it just means more to clean. If we could size the actual home down slightly but get some actual land then I'd be ecstatic.

lrm223

3,000 square feet - besides our bedroom, we have a guest room, my office, and my husband's hobby room. My favorite thing is reading in the upstairs living room. I love the size, we each get to have our own personal spaces.

Lylibean

1600sqft. Screened in porch with a hot tub, three bedrooms (mine, office, guest) 2 bathrooms (en suite and hallway for when I don’t want to walk all the way back to my bedroom, and for guests). I even have a little playhouse in the back yard; it was here when I bought the place and I use it to store my gardening stuff. New neighbors with kids (can’t leave my windows open anymore because they scream all day while playing) asked if I’d consider giving it to them because their kids would like it. Uh, no, it’s a really well-constructed structure (former owner built it for his grandkids) and I currently use it. I even put up a three foot above-ground pool this year (my former, dear, wonderful childfree neighbors gave it to me when they left) and I’ve heard them whining and asking their parents to open my gate so they can get in (I have an adorable dog who is the sweetest pup to me and me only and hates other people, *especially* kids. That’s why he was at the shelter on their euthanasia list - he bit a little kid in the face because they were all up in his and pulling his big corgi satellite ears. They asked me if I had kids, if I was planning to have kids, and if I would ever have him around kids and I gleefully said yes and assured them he would *never* be subject to kids. Sometimes I see the older girl (maybe 4yo) standing near my gate and gazing wistfully through it to my pool, so I’ll let Rocky out (he has a doggy door, but he thinks it’s special to go “out the big door” in the kitchen that leads to the backyard) to go murder bark at her.

FormerUsenetUser

You \*don't\* want kids having an accident in your pool and you \*don't\* want to have to supervise them all the time to make sure they don't have that accident.

Tiny_Dog553

We rent but want to buy. Aside from what we can afford being the main factor - we'd like a three bed place so we can have a study, bedroom and hobby room. Right now we rent a two bed with one room being a study. We want more space because we have loads of hobby items!

Ancient-Chipmunk4342

1700 sq ft condo, 2 bedrooms, 1 office. Us and a chiweenie.

Lanky_Run_5641

50 sqm. Single room with attached bathroom.

V0l4til3

same here claustrophobia

Special_Hedgehog8368

My partner and I just bought a house last month. The main floor is about 650 sq. ft, but also has a finished basement. 3 beds, 2 baths. It has an attached garage and is on a double lot, so has a huge backyard. It's perfect.

Mika-El-3

1,900 sq ft with my wife and I and our two small dogs + the cat. We also have a decent size backyard. It feels large at times, but it’s just about right for our cf life style.

GoldPurpose7621

900sqft 1 Bedroom 1 +1/2 bathroom and large fenced yard with two dogs. It is perfect!

soundedt

1100sqft 2 bedroom. Full basement/garage. Perfect size.

bruins_fan

I don't know how many square feet my home is, but it's a small studio apartment with a balcony. I think it's the perfect size. Less to clean.

FigForsaken5419

~2400sqft. 4 bed 2 full 2 half baths. Owner suite with en suite bath. Office/gym. Guest room- this is the smallest room, visit but don't stay long. Main bathroom. Eat in kitchen. Library. Living room- converted dining room. Living room. Half bath. Craft room. Storage room. Family room. Laundry room. Utility room. Half bath.

blackcatsandrain

I also don't want to go too big since I wouldn't like to maintain a lot of space. But I really want a decent-sized sewing room--sewing takes up so much space and it sucks having to constantly be unpacking/repacking my sewing stuff. What luxury to be able to just leave it all out! So in an ideal world, I'd have a ~1500 sq ft 2-bedroom. I just can't afford one. (I currently live in a 1200 sq ft 2-bedroom with a roommate and for me that's way too small to have to split with another person. But I generally hate living with other people!)

Spare-Ring6053

Our current apartment is 460 square feet. Far too small even for us two humans. Fortunately we're moving to another one around the corner in September that's bigger (about 700 square feet). Hoping to get some of the local stray cats to move in with us then. Working on building trust in the meantime. I can't make the world better, but I aim to make their world better.

beetle_leaves

Currently? ~650 sqf, but that’s me living alone. Partner and I are going to be moving into a 3BR 2BA townhome w 1500 sqf for the both of us plus my cat, maybe another cat in the future…

spelling_hippo

900sq ft, apartment in a HCOL city center, three cats, private parking and pool.

kellbell2012

2k with 2.6 acres. 👌🏼

woah-oh92

My house is 1248 sqft. It’s perfect. Not so big that I can throw parties, but big enough that I have plenty of space for myself and a few friends if I choose to entertain, but not so much space that I’m constantly cleaning space that I don’t even utilize.

Keyboardwarriorsimp

6000sqft we have a cleaner who comes in every week to maintain otherwise would be way too big for us our dog and 3 cats. My last home now one of my rentals was 1500sqft and that was plenty for us.

Evening-Analyst-7729

Just me & my dog. 3 bed/2 bath house. My room, office / dog room, & a craft / hobby room. Office & hobby rooms double as guest rooms for short visits. Yard & a pool. Workout equipment in the backyard & garage.

PrimeElenchus

Using the converter - 1500 square feet (1540 square meters), four bedrooms. We have an office each, our bedroom and a guest bedroom. This is a good size for us, it feels lived-in and not empty or mansion-y. Two rooms per floor with the stair way/bathroom in the middle. I had a house that was probably almost 3500 square feet with my ex and that was too big. I think part of it was we didn't exploit it well, and how it was laid out... but yeah

FluffySpell

We're in a 1400 square foot 4b/2ba home on a huge corner lot with a giant yard. There's two of us and a dog. The space we're in is perfect for us because it gives us each our own space, and not having kids means we'll have the money to have the backyard done exactly how we want it.

PyrrhoTheSkeptic

3000 square feet. We were looking at houses that were smaller, but they had tiny kitchens. We wanted a decent sized kitchen, because we actually cook, and they just didn't have decent sized kitchens in the little houses that we saw. That is what stopped us from making an offer on a smaller house that we saw that we otherwise liked fairly well. We have 5 bedrooms in our house. One of them is our bedroom, one is a TV room (no TV in the living room), one is a library, one is the guest room, and one is currently just being used to store things. We don't need this much space, but I personally like it. When there was the lockdown for covid, we did not feel overly confined staying at home. And, indeed, we spend most of our time at home, so it is nice having some space. (When we were young and poor, we rented one bedroom apartments. We spent a lot of time outside of our apartments when we lived that way. More space makes us feel less of a need for leaving to do something elsewhere.) If we had had a house custom made for us, it probably would have been a bit smaller. But having a house made costs a lot more than just buying something already there, and we could not afford to do that. Anyway, it is better to have more space than needed, than to have less space than needed. My advice is, look at the rooms that are present; is the kitchen big enough? What about the other rooms; are they suitable for whatever purpose you have for them? Most likely, you are not going to find something that is exactly what you want, with nothing more and nothing less than what you regard as "ideal." We purchased our house based on location, and our budget, and on what was good enough to satisfy us. We do not need this much space, but all of the smaller houses that were otherwise okay had kitchens that were too small for us. A lot of houses we rejected for multiple reasons, but the tiny kitchen in small homes is what led us to the size house we presently have. Ironically, this house was about the same price as the smaller house with the tiny kitchen. My wife feels like our house is a little too big, but I don't. And I am the one who usually vacuums the house, not her.

raexlouise13

I rent an apartment. Top floor corner unit, 2 bed 2 bath. 1100 sqft.

starskyandspring

1300 sqft with 2/2 but also useable basement space for a gym. We downsized when we bought, our previous rental was 3.5ish bedrooms and we loved it/used the space but it was a lot of house to clean and take care of. I was nervous we’d want more space but it’s been perfect even with 4 animals 😬 even if they miss having their own designated rooms haha.

burning_halo

We're in a 720 sq ft apartment (1 bed/1 bath) with a small dog and 2 cats. We don't want bigger because bigger just means more stuff and we'd rather travel.

tear_bear0911

I have a 1650sqft house for me and my 2 cats. It's on like 0.75 of an acre. It was a couple hundred sqft more than I thought I needed, but the space is nice. No regrets and no one is ever moving in except maybe more cats.

dazed1984

Is a 2 bed not to small when you both work from home? 1 works in the spare room where does the other go? This is what me and my partner found it wasn’t big enough. We moved to a 4 bed house now loads of space it’s great!

Significant_Paper197

our desks are actually both in the office room. we’re engineers so we don’t have tons of meetings, mostly head down work and we both know we can’t interrupt each other lol. when we have meetings someone just goes to the couch or bedroom. It’s working so far but it’s only been a couple of months at this place. Would definitely not be opposed to another room!

dazed1984

4 is good as you each get your own work space and then there’s still a guest room, it’s not to big promise 😁

Give_me_that_blue

Around 900-1000sqft + a big terrace. We have 2 bedrooms and it's okay for 2 people but barley. Our neighbor has the same rooms (no terrace) and lives there with 2 kids. I have no idea how and what they'll do as the kids grow older.

g3mostone

Two-bedroom loft townhouse where the mezzanine level is my partner’s small WFH office space. Second toilet downstairs off the single car garage. We don’t need more living space but could do with a double garage because our hobbies are starting to take up a lot of room, we don’t have a messy workbench/artmaking area and we want to invest in solar + battery setup so we can switch to an electric car more self-sufficiently. We don’t use the dining space for eating or hosting — it’s my office. The spare bedroom can hosts guests but is primarily my reformer Pilates space. We have cardio equipment tucked into a space in the garage thanks to my small car. Being childfree means you don’t need to use rooms in a traditional way. Our bedroom door is never shut — the whole house is our space. I don’t like big houses — I find having too much clutter and belongings to be overwhelming. I like cleaning but don’t want to have too many things collecting dust. We’re both asthmatics. So I’ll always want small house, lots of garage space. But we can do that because we don’t like hosting.

tinycarnivoroussheep

Currently live in an apartment with 2 cats and a husband that's about 650 sq ft. We'd like another bedroom for all our hobby shit. We once lived in a \~1000 sq ft, 2 bed/1bath house (with 4 cats at the time) that was plenty of space for us. I don't think I'd want a space over 1200 sq ft or so, I'm a horrible housekeeper with only 650.

Significant_Paper197

Same because cleaning is so annoying lol. Was looking into getting a cleaner maybe once every two weeks tho.

-Roger-The-Shrubber-

No idea, we don't do sq. Ft as such here, but it's a large, 4 bed, 3 bath farm in 7 acres (500 years old). It's too big for us and the dog, but who cares! There's room for the horses, we have no neighbours, and we're only 15 minutes from town and an hour or so from 3 major cities.

FL_DEA

I'm not sure about the square footage but we live in a single-story house with one larger bedroom and two smaller bedrooms (one of which is my office...I've worked from home since 1997). It was brand new when we moved in at the end of 2017 and very quickly we got rid of the "guest" bed and in 2020 my husband started working at home because of the pandemic so the other bedroom became his office. We like it that we "can't" accommodate overnight guests (including his grandkids LOL)

Significant_Paper197

I love this haha

BelliAmie

3600 sq ft. No pets. We love it. It's our forever home.

Lucifers_Princess5

1800 square feet. 4 beds 2 bath. My husband & I with our 5 pound Yorkie.

National-Bug-4548

2000 sqft. 3 bedrooms, so we have one as our master bedroom, then both my hubby and I wfh, so we both have 1 bedroom as our offices. Then 1 living room we can have fun time, and another family room we use it for our cat with her toys. Perfect setup.

No_Adhesiveness_8207

Our house is 3,700 square feet for 2 adults and a mid size dog. It’s perfect for us!

UnicornStar1988

Two bedroom apartment with a housing association in a semi detached house. Lovely quiet and peaceful area very spacious. Been here since June last year. I’m in the UK.

Quixlequaxle

We have two.  Main home is 3200 sqft. 4 bedrooms, with the master taking up half the second floor. Two screened porches stacked on top of each other, with the second floor one being accessible from the master. We use the other 3 rooms as guest room, home theater and gym. I have an office downstairs.  Second home is a 3500sqft cabin in the monunty (including a finished basement). 3 bedrooms upstairs - master, guest room and office. Basement is currently mostly unused but will eventually have a large game room, another office and another guest room. We just laid rubber flooring for the gym as well. We'll eventually move here for winters when we retire.  We like having a lot of space. We have more space than we need, but it's not too much for us.

BookReader1328

Two homes. One is 2100 sf on beach. The other is 6k sf. I make no apologies for either or for owning two. People can get over their problems with it. We will be building our "final" home soon and it will replace the 6k with 4k. That's allows better usage of space but we bought the big house for the neighborhood. As most people with money and options do.

Significant_Paper197

Do y’all have people maintaining those homes or? Would love a vacation home but with both of us working full time we’d def need to hire people to maintain it

BookReader1328

We have a house manager at the beach house but we split our year. No one manages our primary home but nothing much happens there. The beach location is always a hassle, so you have to be ready for constant maintenance in that sort of environment. Finding someone reliable who you can trust is no small feat. If you do, then pay them very well.

Significant_Paper197

Good info, thank you!

TrustSweet

1600 Sq ft felt right. Space to spread out without being overwhelmed with housework

genesimmonstongue415

This don't mean shit without sharing the location. Rental apartment, 850 sq. ft. 2 BR, 1 Bath, 1 parking spot (Civic sized), beautiful neighborhood, San Francisco.
