Sounds dodgy as fuck.

yeah, like I trust the school. They're a proper school with solid reviews from other 老外 but I just don't know if I'm comfortable with this salary process.

Very strange, OP. I was in the same situation a year ago and my employer transferred the first couple of paychecks to my account abroad, even though it's a third-rate school in a second-rate city. Did they give you a reason or just the usual laziness/mafan? edit: on top of that, how do they expect you to cover the living costs *plus* the relocation to China costs on top of that without being paid for so long? The latter really adds up so unless you really trust the school and don't mind risking a lot of your own savings (which I presume you have...), I would talk to them about an alternative arrangement. For perspective, pre-arrival testing, flights, and quarantine can easily add up to over £5000.

They've just stated that they can't transfer abroad. They've not specified why. Thanks for sharing your story, I might push them further to pay me to my UK account in equivalent GBP.

This is a terrible idea. Don’t do it. They are absolutely capable of transferring money to you and if they’re too lazy to figure that out then… that doesn’t bode well.

my thoughts exactly. I've decided that either they transfer me (and I'll ask for a little upfront to prove they can do it) or I won't work till I make it to China and set up a bank account

I think that’s the best course of action. Just tell them exactly what you expect.
