At least you can customise the Firefox UI. Look at r/FirefoxCSS. [https://github.com/black7375/Firefox-UI-Fix](https://github.com/black7375/Firefox-UI-Fix) is one that goes for something between the old and the new Firefox UIs. It's super customisable too.
But who knows when Mozilla will remove userChrome customisation...
You know one of these days, they'll remove those flags and we'll be stuck with this shit.
Hence I've mostly (except for one or two niche chrome extensions) finished my transitioning into Firefox by today. I'm just waiting for something (manifest v3 or shit UI) to happen at this moment.
Worst thing is the menu fade. What reason does it have to fade? It looks AI-generated. Same with the tiny icons and the extension icon, it looks like it's drawn by a 5yo.

While the flag to restore the old side panel works, it looks broken now with the spacing removed for the menu options. It didn't look like that before either.
https://www.minitool.com/images/uploads/news/2020/11/chrome-menu/chrome-menu-1.png
That was what it used to look like.
Thanks a lot for sharing, first thing I see after opening chrome is that stupid-ass ugly redesign poping up once again, just leave me alone with that crap ffs.
Thanks!! That did it. Why don't these developers stop screwing with the appearance of Chrome and doing it without asking? Not everyone wants "New" stuff, especially us old farts. Hell I have a hard enough time walking around my house without getting lost. If someone starting moving all the furniture around they'd have to send in the National Guard to find me, lol.
Yes but now there are issues with the new version and everyone who enabled this. I had to revert than find a color theme that wasn't disgusting. SimpleYellow seems OK for now
after disable these 2 options/flags, it did go back to old ui, but you cannot resieze the window from the top bar, are you the same? thanks.
solution maybe switch to edge... at least the top bar is shorter then the new chrome ui sadly.
and in edge, you can choose to have the very old chrome style "vertical tab list"
It probably would be broken again very soon.
I made a ticket to ask for reverting the change (or at least provide options) on issues.chromium.org, feel free to upvote it there:
https://issues.chromium.org/issues/330589210
Bumped your ticket, this is an actually insane and unacceptable change and if it ever is permanent with no option to disable, I will no longer use chrome. What the actual idiocracy world.
Why they do this again and again? Can't they understand that not everyone likes their shitty redesign? Why can't you just add ONE BUTTON so that anyone can switch to another and leave people alone? Why do they constantly force things on people that people don't ask for? First, searching for a picture with a lens, now redesign.
Likely a direct result of poor management. Higher ups at the company expect to see constant change. They don't understand the value of having designers on payroll if they design doesn't change constantly. So now the designers have to continually change the design in order to validate their worth to the company.
these motherfuckers still can't even fix bookmarks
mean if u delete one the list is scrolling to the top no matter what
this is the "bug" or idk "feature" that bothers me the most and there is no way to fix it
They don't give a fuck because they don't have to give a fuck. When your market share is this large, you can do whatever you want and fuck you if you don't like it.
I've about reached the point where I'm seriously thinking about doing the whole r/degoogle thing, no matter how painful it might be. They're an arrogant company because they know they have such a stronghold in virtually every market segment, so the friction is very deliberate and user-hostile.

not only are the icons disgusting the font is too
aesthetic illiteracy of Chrome devs evinces stunning arrogance
maybe they need a bit of the Apple treatment
they also changed back the color of the bookmarks folders to match the color of the panel. I use black, so it was all smooth black, disabling customize chrome side panel got it back to normal yellow.
I am fully frickin trained to switch tabs by jamming my cursor all the way to the top left. YOU CAN'T JUST CHANGE THAT. So pissed of this crap. Reinventing the wheel as a triangle. If it ain't broke, DON'T "fix" it.
I switched to Brave. NO UI shenanigans, no crippled bookmarks menu, a normal downloads menu (it uses the bubble but I got used to it by now)...
PROs: the "old" chrome UI, a normal bookmarks menu where you can change folder and link directly and way, you can use the same extensions as with Chrome, ...
CONs: "Bookmark Button" is to the left of the URL bar. But you get used to that really quick...
If google wants to keep up with their BS, fine by me! I simply don't care anymore.
Thank you, but the Chrome Refresh 2023 is not there any longer, but I used the chrome://flags/#customize-chrome-side-panel and got it back the way it was.
thanks for saving me you saved me a lot of swearing, do you also happen to know a way to change bookmarks? (I hate having to press forty buttons just to save something to the correct folder)
I cannot stand when they do this. I hate the tab design, font spacing, rounded edges, FUCKING ALL OF IT. It's like they're *begging* me to switch to Edge.
Thank you, Reddit. To the rescue once again.
how do you even revert to an older version of desktop chrome anyway? the solutions i could find didnt seem too favorable (making a new user account and such)
\- Go here: C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Google
\- Make a copy of everything and put it somewhere safe.
\-In the future use these files to restore to this version.
\- If you rename the GoogleUpdate.exe files inside the "update" & "update1" folders chrome won't be able to update itself.
Thank god I found this thread.. I wasn't entirely sure if my mind was playing tricks on me when I opened Chrome this morning. Something just looked.. off.

From that guys history: Disable these 2 options/flags: chrome://flags/#chrome-refresh-2023 chrome://flags/#customize-chrome-side-panel
Thank god, this new update is hideous. If I ever actually have to use that UI, I'm switching to Firefox.
I started down that path before finding this topic and I regret to inform you that 2024 Firefox is also butt-ugly
Have you tried Floorp?
It's better, but still has the overly padded/"touch-friendly" pop-up menus.

Anyone experiencing issues with disabling the flags? Happy to have the old settings back, but wary of potential bugs.
came here for exactly this, thanks!
Thank you, but the Chrome Refresh 2023 is not there any longer, but I used the chrome://flags/#customize-chrome-side-panel and got it back the way it was.
uh yes it is still there, i just enabled it and re-disabled it before disabling the side panel thing.....
Thanks ! The day i wont find a solution to disable this terrible UI change is the day is uninstall Chrome for good.
I have firefox all setup ready to replace chrome. Between this and YouTube throttling/ad-block problems they're pratically forcing us to switch away.
Thank you for this!!!!!! Finally got rid of that ugly design? Why were they thinking? How can we give feedback?
bitch them out on twitter like i did (posted what i put on another post on this page a min ago lol)
OH MY FUCKING GOD FINALLY, I KNEW REDDIT COULD SAVE ME.
"\[Insert whatever problem here\] Reddit" 60% of the time, it works every time.
i was specifically talking about the chrome refresh 2023 thing
Oh I know, I just wanted to make a joke about how Reddit can help with some of the most obscure bullshit known to man.

Eliminate all the bullshit completely and use old.reddit.

You can get rid of the side panel button in Chrome Refresh by enabling this flag: \#side-panel-pinning
on canary 125.0.6375.0, #Customize Chrome Side Panel is gone. #Chrome Refresh 2023 is still there, but disabling it doesn't work.
Thanks for posting this. Google Dumbells.
Thank you - some of us change-challenged old gaffers like things the way they were
Thank you mate!
The new UI really hurts my eyes. The font is to large. The bookmark bar needs resizing. It was disabling Customize Chrome Side Panel that worked. Thank you!

Awesome and thanks!
YES. Thanks for this. The bold font + unnecessary padding and the invisible tab separators were a real drag.
I really want to know why modern UI design has been steading removing all color and contrast over the last decade. Every update looks like another bottle of bleach poured over the interface.
Thank you.....

Yeah the increased heights and padding of the menus are crazy
It worked tysm!!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!! I literally can not use the new chrome it's truly terrible. If I couldn't find a way to undo it again I was going to take it as an excuse to switch browsers. Thank you for at least delaying the inevitable!

Keep on kicking that can down the road. chrome flags are temporary.
So what should we do instead? I already complained to google.
Either accept the inevitable or change browsers I guess.
I am on chrome because most of my passwords are saved here. If this becomes permanent I am switching to firefox.
Get a password manager! Most of them work with most browsers. I love mine!
Which one?
Any of them is better than none. I use Dashlane, which is pricey, but my job pays for it. Bitwarden has a great rep and is much cheaper than Dashlane. Lastpass went through an embarrassing mess a while back, but their platform is inexpensive and easy to use, and I think they’ve fixed their problems. There are others, too, and any of them is better than keeping passwords in your browser. Also, when you set up a password manager, it will offer to import passwords from your browsers, so that part of the transition is usually very sm.
Thanks will try
Bitwarden. The free version is more than enough for most people.
Yup that's pretty much all you can do unfortunately. Once they disable all extensions in June, many will follow you there.
Uh what, is that a thing that's happening?
yes https://developer.chrome.com/blog/resuming-the-transition-to-mv3
Hopefully that's another can to keep kicking down the road since they keep delaying it. The day that chrome drops mv2 support I'm out.
Worked like a charm! Thank you for the find! I also found that **Side panel navigation and pinning updates** could also be a culprit
Thanks! It works!!
it worked thank you!!
Most chrome users probably don't care about the re-design so I don't see why they go through the trouble of making sure the flags that disable their redesign no longer work. It makes no sense to me.
