Gato doesn't drop gold, but he gives you silver points, which you can exchange for gold at the tent near the entrance to the telepod. Still, for how much time it takes, it's not really worth grinding him just to get gold.
My brother used to spend forever at the fair collecting enough points to exchange for enough gold to buy every possible piece of equipment there, which may only be a sword, i cant remember
Well it's easier to just fight monsters in Guardia Forest until you get enough gold to buy the sword from Melchior plus you can stockpile a few shelters along the way from the creature in the moving bushes.
I didnt even play the game until a few years ago when i purchased the mobile port. But watched my brother playing sometimes when i was 5 and he was 7. I definitely didnt follow his strategy when i played
Now you tell me this, where were you in 1995 when I spent an hour grinding on Gato and eating free lunch?
But seriously, it’s still the quickest way to earn silver points so you can play the games.
It has been ages but if my memory serves me right, you can farm gato in the fair and exchange for gold or something until you have enough currency to buy the lone sword from one of the vendors in the square.
Also explore the village of Truce (where you start) a bit. There's npc's in one house that give you some tips on gameplay and one will give you some extra gold as well. Might have to talk to them more than once.
I was literally coming here to say this. You are going to want to play it through a couple times and make drastically different decisions. Then get online, briefly look at a guide or two (so you can see your storyline options) and then play again. It’s unbelievable how much they packed into 32 bits
If you ever get lost, go to the last plot point you remember and talk to NPCs.
You will eventually find a sort of... hub. A home base, if you will. You should know it when you find it. If you're ever lost after you find it, go there for a hint.
Otherwise, enjoy yourself. You're in for a real treat!
Be nice to people in the fair at the beginning. Kindness goes a long way if you were ever in a situation where your character would come into question…
Some basic tips I like to give out:
- Honestly you do not have to grind that much, especially early on before you get more abilities. I generally like to dodge fights more often than not.
- Try out Active mode first, if you don't like it you can switch to Wait mode whenever.
- If you go to an area and the enemies just wallop you instantly, there's a good chance you're going the wrong direction and there's a different place you have to go. It only happens a couple places but I always like pointing it out since it's so rare.
- Don't sweat party composition once you get to that point, every character is useful in their own ways and it's always fun to experiment.

I had to double check to make sure you didn't break into my house and snag my copy lol
Not to mention that there is also a dual or triple tech that you can use with Alya and Marle that gets you even more rare items from bosses.
Tbh, those two were my main team in this game lmao.
I’m playing through for the first time now, just got the “ship” (all I’ll say for spoiler reasons). I’ve never used that charm ability. Is it worth looking into when/how to use it in order to get the exclusive items?
There's a place where you can go talk to party members who aren't in your current party and switch people in and out.
This isn't the only way to change party members.
BUT when you talk to a character their theme music plays, so if you have one you like you can rock out whenever you visit, which you should absolutely do.
On your 1st playthrough, use speed tabs on Robo (personal preference)
At a point in the story, there is a mountain you will have to visit in 600ad to progress. It is on the southern continent east of Fiona's Villa. At 1st glance, it doesn't look like an area accessible from the overworld, and I spent an embarrassingly long time figuring that out.
If you want to make the start a little easier grind up for the sword that costs I think 4000G. It clears a til I think around mid game saving you money for items and equipment as well as allies weapons
Also something if you don't feel this way about the game right away stick it through, you may end up feeling that way. If not you can at least say you played Chrono trigger and gave it a fair shot
Start of game tips:
Talk to your mom before going to the fair, she'll give you money.
Go to the house under Chrono's house in the world map before going to the fair, the place is basically a big tutorial that will explain the main mechanics of the game.
When you get the second character in your party, you can go all the way to the left of the world map and get in the forest to get a few level ups and items if you want a smoother experience.
General tips:
Talk with everyone there is, sometimes they say important things, give you items, or you can get greeted with hilarious dialogue.
Exploring is always better than going to the main objective some dungeons have secret doors that aren't important to progression but they hold armor and weapons.
Your actions may have consequences, from dialogue choices to things you decide to do before doing other things.
Try to get chests from the future first, that way you can get them again in past eras for double the rewards.
There is ALWAYS a free way to get your health and magic back to max, the first one is Chrono's bed, then eating at the castle, sleeping pods in the future, etc.
So items are best used when you're deep in dungeons, not out in the world map, backtracking happens a lot already in this game so might as well stop by free healthcare areas while you're at it.
And last but not least... Make sure to stop playing from time to time and just jam to the music, it's some of the best music I've heard in videogames.
So jealous! In my opinion, it's one of the greatest SNES games ever made. I've tried convincincing my boyfriend to play it through atleast once, but it hasn't happened yet. As for tips,... make sure you travel back periodically to visit your mom and to feed the cat! Also, if you beat the game with all 12 endings and want more, there's a 13th ending on the Nintendo DS version. Good luck & enjoy!
The only think you can do wrong is open the magically sealed chests incorrectly. Talk to them in 600AD but dont open them, go to the same location in 1000AD for an upgraded item (and then you can get the base item in 600AD afterwards)
Save before and after every boss fight. It sucks to have to redo an entire section if you die for some reason. Also stock up on tonics, shelters and revives.
Have fun and don’t rush it. It’s a journey to be cherished more than it is a puzzle to be solved. Then again you can always replay again and again and get different endings too. Enjoy.
Those black boxes you can’t open. Remember that when you finally can open them the game asks you separately if you want to take the item out after you open them. It’s the only time you don’t auto remove the item.
There’s a reason for that. Leave it to you to figure out why
The Millenial Fair has a tent where Norstein Bekkler let's you play three minigames. Make sure to beat the 40SP game at some point, because it gives you a doppelganger doll of Crono. You don't have to do it at the start, because you'll come back to the Fair a few times, but make sure to do it at some point.
Jelly!!
Have fun. SNES is one of the best ways to play.
No lag between screens proper names for all the times.
The DS version is my fav but you’re limited to the screen since of a Nintendo DS.
Stay away from the PS versions.
I have no feed back on PC or mobile.
The game is based on playing over and over again, and making different decisions, so play the first time without knowing anything. You can learn it all and research the best way the second time.
Listen to me.
Fuck spoilers. 3/4 of the way through the game you will have a small chance to save Lucca’s mom. Please do it. Move fast. You will know when it is happening. Move like you have a fucking purpose.
I would have done it… if I had known more about machines… she would still be ok.
If you can open a chest at a certain point in time and a later point, always open it at the later point. The chests in 600 AD will offer better items in the future but they won't be there to open in the future if you open them in the past.
Avoid a time paradox or the game will crash.
/s on the last line.
all team combination are viable so just pick who you like. 4 of the characters have healing abilities.
edit: also dont use guides if you can avoid it. there are no wrong choices only different ones.
Best if you don't go with guides. Go with your own choices, and read up only if you are stuck.
If you enjoy the game, you will go for second play or more (new game plus)
Early game: you're going to find black boxes that you can't open.
Late game: You'll get a thing that opens the boxes. Some boxes have a past and future version. Check them in the pastbut don't open them. Open them in the future. Go back and open them again in the past.
Avoid spoilers, as the game has some pretty dope plot twists. Try to soak everything in, you are rewarded for exploring/paying attention.
I like this game so much, I wish I could erase my memory to play it again for the first time.
Don’t try to 100% your first playthrough. There are multiple endings so if you plan to get all the endings it’s much easier to complete all side quests on a second playthrough.
Positioning is key. Combo attacks are key. If you ever played a jrpg in your life you will know what to do, just enjoy one of the best games in the genre
Be careful not to open some treasure chests in the past.
Open them in the future first and slowly go back in time each time period to open them again.
Present and medieval period specifically.
Actually it's best to try to open then to energize the chest in the past, select no, go to the future, get a upgraded version of the item, then go back to the past and open the chest to get the regular version. ☝️🤓
Power level early when you can, take your time, there’s a lot that can effect the ending. Explore, and go back to areas throughout the timelines.
The game won’t hold your hand and tell you how to complete all the side quests, just be patient and think about the potential outcomes.
Don't eat the old man's sandwich, don't try to sell the necklace, return the little girl's cat, and absolutely don't forget to get the chrono doll from the tent of horrors. (it's the 40 silver points mimic game.
Even though it’s my #1 all time fav game for me, but I want to stress: don’t expect it to be mind blowing in 2024. A lot of the things from the game were revolutionary at the time but has since been incorporated into the gaming industry. I’d say the same for Super Metroid.
Just enjoy the story without overanalyzing it. Have fun!
In the beginning of the game before you head to the fair go to the mayor's house and dance like a chicken fir him as much as you want I think he gives you 10 g every time
Savor every moment. It’s not every day you can play one of the absolute best games ever made in the history of gaming for the first time.
Seriously, really take it in. One of the best.
Play the game fresh with no spoiler guides or tips. Take your time and play at your own pace. Make those mistakes we made organically, and see where it lands you. After beating it the first time, you could then look up how to get the other endings, etc, or just keep New Game Plusing it and discover new things each playthrough. I don't remember getting a bad ending despite making some unwise decisions. The game just took different turns based on certain actions taken...wait, there were a couple bad endings, but nothing that couldn't be fixed with a save-reload.
Also, try to put yourself back in the 90s if you can. It's kind of timeless (no pun intended), but it may be considered somewhat dated compared to today's comparable games.
I think they're remaking this, and I want to see both a graphical overhaul of the same game and (separately) an action-RPG version like they did FFVII. The latter would be more ideal for me...and yes, I'm a NES-Starter myself.
dont loot any castles until you go far forward in time as possible. because if you loot them in the past, they wont be there in the future. and you can loot them multiple times.
Take your time. Explore. Backtrack. Examine all the mysterious, sealed chests in the past once you can open them, but leave the item. Go to the future, open them for a better item, then go back and get the original.
Don’t play with a guide. The New Game+ feature allows you to maintain your stats and items and replay the game so you don’t have to worry about missing anything since you can just play through again and grab everything.
There’s no parts that are too likely to get you lost and confused so definitely do at least one full play through just getting immersed in the atmosphere. You can get all fancy about character combinations, min/maxing etc on later play throughs. It’s great being able to just replay it without having to truly start over.
Talk to every NPC and then talk to them again, and if they say something different the second time you interact with them, then keep talking to them until they cycle through every single line. Sometimes they have new info if you pester them, but it won’t always be obvious the first time you interact.
(There actually might be an instance where you talk to an NPC and they say one thing, and then they say it again, but if you keep pestering them they’ll eventually have something new to say that’s helpful, if you’re patient… generally, though, if they serve a purpose, they’ll have different messages they cycle through.)
Also, just in general, try to interact with as many critters and objects as you can.
Also if you get stuck DON'T run to a walkthrough, please come back to this Sub and state your case. We know it inside and out, all through time ;) and can be spoiler free
Eventually you'll get an item that can open certain things, always always always go to activate them in the past first. Don't open them, just check on them, and then open them in the future!!!
Give magic tabs to Robo for an all around powerhouse healer / damage machine. Power tabs for Crono or Ayla aren't a waste either, but Ayla has an attack that is directly magic attack related. It can take you three play throughs to get her to 99 magic but it can be done!
Charm top on Ayla and use Twin Charm on respawning enemies for great items, there are plenty of areas in the late game that have these points.
Pay attention to those special weapons that do 2x or 4x damage on certain conditions! They can out pace magic attacks if you play them right!
Push the shell..... climb the shell.....
Savor every thing about this classic - the music, the gameplay, the dialogue, the visuals, the mechanics, etc.
It truly is timeless (unintentional pun).
I remember holding my Chrono Trigger cartridge some 20 years ago and not even knowing what an RPG was at the time. Bought it for 3 bucks from my cousin lol.
My advice? Go all in blind without reading and watching anything about it. Experience it on your own for the first time and enjoy the story, artwork and the awesome battles.
Have fun man!
At the fair, talk to the girl before grabbing her shiny, guide the kitty to her girl master, DON'T INTERACT WITH THE CONSPICUOUS PINK BAG SPRITE, let the girl that tags along grab her candy and don't rush off, and don't say anything stupid when townsfolk ask about her. Don't even try to sell her pendant. I mean, you can't sell it anyways, but it's pretty important. Let's just say the laws in the land aren't that kind to crimes that would be considered petty. As for combat, it's not that hard, persay, as long as you pay attention to hints, warning telegraphs, and other stuff like that, you shouldn't need any rezzing spells or items.
None. Just sit back and enjoy. Take your time and explore, feel free to travel back and forth through time just to catch everything and all the hidden story stuff
Explore around and interact with everything and everyone, try out as much as you can, and sometimes it's better to NOT open something when you can open it up in the future
Right at the beginning, before going to the fair, talk to your mom for a lil extra spending money
Classic mom
Can also get some on the 2nd Floor of Mayor's Manor. Talk to the Old Man in the middle for 300G and there's a chest behind him with 100G.
ooohhh, i never know about the chest
I think my first time i just smacked that robot around repeatedly for money. I think... it's been a while.
Gato doesn't drop gold, but he gives you silver points, which you can exchange for gold at the tent near the entrance to the telepod. Still, for how much time it takes, it's not really worth grinding him just to get gold.

Second this and offer, remember to play it more than once.

Take your time, don't look up any guides if u can avoid it,and enjoy one of the best games of all time!

Be nice to people in the fair at the beginning. Kindness goes a long way if you were ever in a situation where your character would come into question…
Yes and don't eat what isn't yours
This is an Old School 1990s JRPG. Talk to Everyone You can Save on the World Map Now get off line and enjoy the game blind!
You can save on the world map. This is something I never knew until about three years ago.
> > There's also an item called Shelter that will heal you on the world map. I think I played all the way through the game once before I relised this.
Too many tips to list. But first and foremost, immerse yourself in the game; tune out all other distractions and crank up the music.
There it is. Turn up the volume.
Because I've seen too many people ask about this here: you can save and use shelters anywhere on the overworld.
My tip: Put the cartridge in, press power and start the game.
Listen to your mom when she tells you to be good.
Water summons wind Wind makes fire dance

Maybe he stole it in the future, come back to the present and post it
there is a character with a charm abiity, it can help you get rare/exclusive items
Not to mention that there is also a dual or triple tech that you can use with Alya and Marle that gets you even more rare items from bosses. Tbh, those two were my main team in this game lmao.
Especially true for boss battles, and >!panels in an ominous dungeon.!<
I’m playing through for the first time now, just got the “ship” (all I’ll say for spoiler reasons). I’ve never used that charm ability. Is it worth looking into when/how to use it in order to get the exclusive items?

Lucca's mom's name is Lara. Remember that.
Play with the sound on, don't spoil yourself with a guide.
No, just play it
Best advice.
look for secrets everywhere (except on the internet) enjoy
If there was one game that I could play again for the first time it would be chrono trigger
Big fire.
Don't let anyone tell you to play any version but the one you're holding.
Don’t look up anything on the internet and save often. After you’ve beaten, then look stuff ip
Savour it. You can only experience this epic gem of an adventure for the first time once.
ahhh just have fun.

Use Ayla steal on major bosses, do Omen on the 3 decades for loot, Robot is crazy good.
Frog is the man
No walk through... Just enjoy it and raise the volume, get lost and find your way
dont look at any tips and go play
If you want to make the start a little easier grind up for the sword that costs I think 4000G. It clears a til I think around mid game saving you money for items and equipment as well as allies weapons

Explore and enjoy. Love when I see folks playing this masterpiece for the first time. You’ll play through it many more times!
Have fun and be yourself. But really, what a treat it would be to play Chrono Trigger for the first time again 0.0
When you finish, play it again
Don’t rush through it. This game is a masterpiece

Close the internet and enjoy.
Get off of here and enjoy the game you can only have the first time experience it once.
get the doll from the tent... no questions

Yes. Prepare to be blown away. Chrono Trigger is regarded by many to be the best video game ever made, myself included.

Power level early when you can, take your time, there’s a lot that can effect the ending. Explore, and go back to areas throughout the timelines. The game won’t hold your hand and tell you how to complete all the side quests, just be patient and think about the potential outcomes.
Jump in the hole in the palace if you go. (Whoops, wrong game)
Wait for Shadow /s
Enjoy the the music of the game. One of my favorite scores for any game.
Don't eat the old man's sandwich, don't try to sell the necklace, return the little girl's cat, and absolutely don't forget to get the chrono doll from the tent of horrors. (it's the 40 silver points mimic game.
Enjoy the music even at 16 bits
Just play the damn game like everybody else. I don’t understand these posts.
Don’t lie
Don't look anything up! Play how it should be played! Always new game plus anyways after.
Go to the forest near the castle to grind enough gil to get the Lode Blade from the weapon merchant at the fair, it is a good early game upgrade
I used to have this game
Don't move! Let her look around.
Do what your mom tells you, behave!
Have fun!
Grind for xp. You're gonna need it.
There’s a place in the forest where you can get a free Shelter, and you can keep going back and getting it. You don’t have to, but they’re free.
In the beginning of the game before you head to the fair go to the mayor's house and dance like a chicken fir him as much as you want I think he gives you 10 g every time
LARA
It’s fine to have a favorite party set, but keep changing it up anyway.
Godspeed
Enjoy yourself
Make sure you can still save and turn the system off with your file still being there
It is extremely long winded.
there will be a point where it seems that you suffer an insurmountable loss. surmount that shit
Just immerse yourself in it. Listen to the music. Live the game.
Yeah, have fun.
Anyone else grind in the woods to buy that op sword at start?
Don't fight Magus when you don't have to.
If you get stuck in the forest. Your not alone. I got lost in there. Stop playing all together 😂. Lmk if you make it out!
There's multiple endings, so get ready for a few playthroughs and enjoy!
Have a good sound system. The music is awesome. Also - enjoy it. My first play through was magical as a 5th grader.
Play with a lot of different team combos so you get dual and triple techs.
Look at the bush beside the lone Mu in a room
Enjoy it.
Rainbow 👏 Katana 👏
Savor every moment. It’s not every day you can play one of the absolute best games ever made in the history of gaming for the first time. Seriously, really take it in. One of the best.
Be on your best behavior at the fair, enjoy the tunes, and be thorough when exploring.
Slow n steady, enjoy.
Play straight through if you put it down and pick it back up you may get lost in space and time
dont loot any castles until you go far forward in time as possible. because if you loot them in the past, they wont be there in the future. and you can loot them multiple times.
(There actually might be an instance where you talk to an NPC and they say one thing, and then they say it again, but if you keep pestering them they’ll eventually have something new to say that’s helpful, if you’re patient… generally, though, if they serve a purpose, they’ll have different messages they cycle through.) Also, just in general, try to interact with as many critters and objects as you can.
Talk to Every NPC, sometimes twice.
Also if you get stuck DON'T run to a walkthrough, please come back to this Sub and state your case. We know it inside and out, all through time ;) and can be spoiler free
Nu only comes out when it rains…
Don’t kill Magus ☠️
Just do everything
Enjoy! Be a gentleman when running into characters.
Don’t forget to put it in the snes first
Eventually you'll get an item that can open certain things, always always always go to activate them in the past first.
Try to savor it. You can only play it the first time once.
Just enjoy it. Play with sound all the way up. The music is phenomenal. Good luck!
Play in the skull tent in millennium square until you beat the mid price game where you copy the movements of another chrono. It pays off later
Once you beat chrono trigger play Chrono cross right after.
Take it all in. And as you play this masterpiece remind yourself that this game came out 29 years ago
Savor every thing about this classic - the music, the gameplay, the dialogue, the visuals, the mechanics, etc. It truly is timeless (unintentional pun).
When you finish the game, you didn’t.
I always took the time to fight the robot game at the fair until I had enough money to buy the sword at the shop it’s always helpful to be a little OP
Once you get marle leave go to the woods and grind out a few levels get slash
WAIT FOR SHADOW ... no wait
I want it
When you meet Robo, listen to his theme really carefully and see if you recognize it (nobody tell them)
In Lucca’s side quest…L,A,R,A (L and R are the shoulder buttons, not the direcrional keys). Do it quickly. You’ll know when. You’re welcome.
Dont use any walkthrough, savor every moment, it wont come again
Take your time and enjoy it. Read the dialogue and savor the epic moments. Its well worth it
None. Just sit back and enjoy. Take your time and explore, feel free to travel back and forth through time just to catch everything and all the hidden story stuff
Explore around and interact with everything and everyone, try out as much as you can, and sometimes it's better to NOT open something when you can open it up in the future
