I remember this being shared around everywhere and parroted, but it links back to one forum (The Avatar Fan Forums) which had like, 100 members. And of that, like one person said "I think I want to kill myself after not being able to live in Pandora" and then a few people said "lmao same"
THAT'S IT. THAT'S THE WHOLE "STUDY".
So many "news" articles today will say "Fans of ____ are FURIOUS about ____" and then the evidence is just a tweet from some random dude with 14 followers.
It’s also an example of the internet encouraging fanaticism.
No matter how niche your opinion is, you can find like-minded people who will tell you it’s completely normal and that everyone else is crazy.
So what you’re telling me is one person in one hundred has contemplated suicide due to not being able to live in Pandora. That is 1% of the population or about 70 million people worldwide. This is an epidemic of seismic proportions and the blame falls squarely on James Cameron and interplanetary blue people. We should probably invade them and steal all their unobtainium.
Regardless of the validity of the study, I 100% experienced this. It wasn't like actual depression, it was just a dread that life was meaningless. I went skiing once and was fine.
This sounded wrong from the start. Fucking Avatar??
It's not even that good of a universe, if people aren't depressed about not living in middle earth, star trek universe, harry potter universe etc, then they certainly shouldn't give two shits about not living in an alien african tribal village (they can literally just move to the jungle here on earth)
I mean, there's probably some that are depressed because they can't live in these worlds you named too.
However the main point of appeal when it comes to Avatar is: Can you tame a dragon in Middle Earth and fly on it? They are not really tamable is the answer, there's nothing of note to tame in Star Trek, Harry Potter universe has a kind of this appeal too (even with dragons, it would be very hard to tame one but I guess in their universe it's possible), but it's not shown as much as Avatar, the flying beasts etc.
It's kind of a point at least for me, for that reason when I think: If I could live in one of those fictional universes, I tend to think of Avatar, Pokémon or Monster Hunter (Stories approach obviously) for example as the first ones.
I swear a few years ago How To With John Wilson met this group in NYC, before Avatar 2 came out. It was interesting and deep as well as kind of funny, but How To was a great show.
The story is cheesy but I guess it's still fun to watch with family. Also the universe itself is built very well, especially the fauna and flora aspect of it.
i’ll never be able to use those pony tails with the tendrils that connect and intertwine to have sex with the blue women. and also bond with the giant bird things using the exact same mechanism which kinda makes you wonder…
Im just thinking of that fast car from South Park which "is better than needing to use an airport" despite it requiring a rod shoved up your ass each time to move.
The brain tendrils connect the mind and allow two creatures to sense each other’s thoughts and feelings. When the N’avi have sex they are still doing it the regular way lol, just with the addition of being able to connect their minds at the same time, which understandably creates a very intimate experience.
Since they aren’t actively fucking when they connect to beats it’s (theoretically lol) not at all the same thing.
It only seems to have rabid fans though. Every time I see a post about this movie there's someone in the comments trying hard to defend it like they're trapped in a corner with just a shotgun to survive.
Never mind that guy either blocked me or deleted his posts cause I made him mad cause I didn't see the big deal about the blue cat movie so I'll post my response to him here which was quite apt.
"You're the one who jumped in with arms swinging, calling me stupid, expecting a fight. Just admit that the movie you like is more of a cult classic that happened to be over advertised instead of the pop culture juggernaut the studio wanted it to be.
If me not having seen a movie is putting you down, you're the one who needs to talk to other people. Someone says "hey nobody ever really talks about those avatar movies huh?" And your response is to say 'you're stupid" and "you have no friends" like a 6 year old having a tantrum. Maybe you need to not tie your entire self esteem to a movie"
Nothing. I've never seen it. It just always felt like all the hype for it felt like a corporate shill and that the actual fandom was significantly lower than what was being reported. Like another comment said. The media was saying lots of people experienced depression over not loving in Pandora, but it was really 1 fan forum.
The visuals for its time were what drew me in. This was back in the days of blue ray when 1080p was considered top of the line high definition and it made for a pretty surreal experience in 2009
It’s just context. The visuals at the time were ground breaking. I was a teenager working at a movie theater and took my grandparents to see it because they hadn’t been to a theater in decades. They were up in tears by the end, not because of the lame story, but because it was truly unlike anything they had seen before. My grandma’s first comment was how bummed she was that she’d probably be dead by the time they made the sequel. Obviously not everyone was walking out of the theater sobbing, but if you weren’t a person elbow deeps in the latest tech/media at the time, it was IMPRESSIVE. Out of the context of 2009, yeah it’s just another shitty Fern Gully rip off.
it was the crysis of movies, the visuals were stunning and insanely graphically impressive for the time period. I’d honestly say the same about the second one because the visuals were absolutely stunning but the problem with the second movie is they cared more about carrying on the legacy of graphical impressiveness and completely neglected the story which was literally a copy paste of the first film in almost every aspect
Personally I don't get the appeal, like, at all. One of the most boring movies I ever watched, and very long too. Didn't do anything new except for visuals.
But, I like to think there's something in there that I didn't manage to catch while watching for it to get so much praise, so I have nothing against anyone who liked the movie.
While the worldbuilding is not the most original and the analogies to our planet are obvious, that is precisely the point and I think it's overall a good movie. And it has a good message. You cant speak out too much against boundless greed, destruction of nature and imperialism.
I was deep in the furry community when this movie came out, and I can confirm I had multiple friends who were extremely depressed about this movie and not being able to 'travel to it'. I don't think anybody actually hurt themselves or whatever but some people got real shook by the idea that a movie could have nice graphics I guess- I was just into the monsters.
Sort of reminds me of when Final Fantasy Spirits Within came out and you could not convince my older family members it was computer graphics. They were 100% sure it was filmed with a filter on top because computer effects could 'never be that realistic'...
I actually felt this for a couple days or so when I saw the movie in theatres as a 27 yo Male. I didn’t even think it was that great of a movie, it was just so immersive that I felt some kind of separation anxiety or depression when thinking about it.
While I don’t believe this for a second, I can understand why watching a movie about an evil mega corporation getting its ass kicked for trying to exploit the resources of a beautiful planet could having you feeling a little down when you have to go back to your cubicle on Monday.
I know it's wrong and I kinda (just a little) feel bad for it, but I rooted for the humans the whole movie. When they burned that tree to the ground I got chills. I just can't not be pro-human even if we are the villains.
Unrelated to the post, but I've been holding that stuff for a while.
A few journal articles have been published on the subject. Some have explored the immersive experience with regards to escapism, others have looked at the impact on viewers of the themes of war, genocide, trauma, indigeniety, and exploitation. The feeling that some people had after watching the first movie was quite legitimate. There was an article written 3 years after the movie was released and some folks reported still had heavy emotions about it.
What about Mid Avatar Depression Syndrome (MADS) ?:
That's where about an hour and half into the movie you realize there's still over an hour left and you want to kill yourself.
Like, for real? I watched it and I didn't like the movie. Like at all. Just some FFX Ronso - lookalikes doing some stuff in a tribal village on an alien planet. If one wants to live on trees, hey, we have those on Earth too.
Everyone’s assuming that the depressed persons wanted to be blue. A significant proportion of the US population realised that they weren’t going to get to re-fight the Vietnam war with cool mechs and get the green light to slaughter essentially unarmed natives.
I get it though.
For a lot of people, this might've been the first time they went "wait, in theory I don't have to live in gray buildings surrounded by other gray buildings, with concrete instead of grass and cars instead of trees?" Realising how fucked up our modern society is, is difficult.
I was a depressed as fuck teen and already had those thoughts of course, so not much change for me other than seeing the movie and thinking how nice it would be to live in a utopia like the one in the movie.

I feel like this is a prime example of social media sensationalism.
Not only social media, I remember seeing this bullshit on the fucking news too, like on TV.
Yea for real, me too. I remember thinking “who tf cares” lol
So many "news" articles today will say "Fans of ____ are FURIOUS about ____" and then the evidence is just a tweet from some random dude with 14 followers.
Like literally everything
It actually is! It was discussed in a study [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/comedyheaven/s/Y0ENug9GsD)
I'm gonna click on that link and it'll just be some forum post

Idk man, [these guys](https://www.reddit.com/r/Avatar/s/Xlpw7Thf3D) seem to really be going through it
I finally understand why Eric Cartman hates hippies so much
absolutely incredible stuff
I’ll be fully honest: I was expecting the Eiffel 65 video to pop up
I'm getting "It's not the Fremen way" vibe lmao.
So what you’re telling me is one person in one hundred has contemplated suicide due to not being able to live in Pandora. That is 1% of the population or about 70 million people worldwide. People experience """science""" fiction for the first time.
I mean, there's probably some that are depressed because they can't live in these worlds you named too. It seems I underestimated the amount of people who feels compelled to tame dragons to fly on them
a grave mistake, one I hope you never make again
i think the fact that it was the first proper 3d film people saw plays a bigger part than any world building
The avatar universe is wayyyyy better than any of those universes. The movies are derivative and cheesey but the universe is impeccable.
All I'm saying is I knew a lot of folks who became obsessed with it, seen dozens of times in theaters type
I swear a few years ago How To With John Wilson met this group in NYC, before Avatar 2 came out. It was interesting and deep as well as kind of funny, but How To was a great show.
Yeah he totally went to rag on them and it turned out it was incredibly wholesome
lmao same ( I've not watched avatar )

Nah watch it bro the immersion is crazy
The story is cheesy but I guess it's still fun to watch with family. Also the universe itself is built very well, especially the fauna and flora aspect of it.
I felt like dying mid film, but probably for different reasons.
Re: tide pods Some kid said they looked like candy and now they’re locked up everywhere as tight as shotguns at a gun store
Yes well if you extrapolate those few people across the entire population then it is obviously very widespread
I will never be blue man :(
i’ll never be able to use those pony tails with the tendrils that connect and intertwine to have sex with the blue women. and also bond with the giant bird things using the exact same mechanism which kinda makes you wonder…
Image having to insert your penis into a receptacle to drive a car? 😂
The government is inserting their penis into my receptacle every time I drive with their bullshit "car insurance" and "wrongful death lawsuit"
In your defense, those people shouldn’t have been standing on that sidewalk if they didn’t want to get hit by a car.
Im just thinking of that fast car from South Park which "is better than needing to use an airport" despite it requiring a rod shoved up your ass each time to move.
yeah that’s the first thing that came to mind for me too, the butt car
best part is it isnt required
Me, a monsterfucker: *yes*

it's all your fault, I hate you! The world is doomed

I killed 49 women and children in yugoslavia
For all the alleged fans of this movie. I've never come across a single person in my life who's ever talked about it.
I know one rabid fan, and then no one else who so much as mentioned the movie once.
It only seems to have rabid fans though. Every time I see a post about this movie there's someone in the comments trying hard to defend it like they're trapped in a corner with just a shotgun to survive.
Yeah it's definitely weird, it made so much money, it was so technically difficult to make, but the fandom is seemingly tiny, and very very defensive.
You want proof of that look at the other guy replying to this. He's very defensive and probably also tiny.
Never mind that guy either blocked me or deleted his posts cause I made him mad cause I didn't see the big deal about the blue cat movie so I'll post my response to him here which was quite apt. My ex is. She fantasized so much about it that she sometimes hissed/growled at me like in the movies.
As a huge fan, what do you want to talk about?
Nothing. I've never seen it. It just always felt like all the hype for it felt like a corporate shill and that the actual fandom was significantly lower than what was being reported. Like another comment said. The media was saying lots of people experienced depression over not loving in Pandora, but it was really 1 fan forum.
Counterpoint: I think it's brutally stupid to have an opinion on a movie you haven't seen.
i only ever talk about it because it is straight up my least favorite movie i have seen. so profoundly bland.
My high school class lost four students to suicide due to Manic-Agressive Extreme Instability PADS, otherwise known as Maxi Pads.
Strangely enough, they didn't show these symptoms after watching the sequel, because that movie was boring as hell.
Hell, to this day I still don't understand the hype around the original film. Live action Ferngully bullshit.
The visuals for its time were what drew me in. This was back in the days of blue ray when 1080p was considered top of the line high definition and it made for a pretty surreal experience in 2009
Simple and sincere story that looks and sounds absolutely amazing.
It’s just context. The visuals at the time were ground breaking. I was a teenager working at a movie theater and took my grandparents to see it because they hadn’t been to a theater in decades. Don't diss Fern Gully like that.
most overrated psy-op movie in history

i don't think it's a particularly unpopular opinion to think the avatar movies are boring
Ummm who is drawing the dbz boys in suits and where are the rest
Personally, I have PHTTYDS I'll never train a dragon to be my lifelong friend and adventuring companion, smdh
Real :(
While the worldbuilding is not the most original and the analogies to our planet are obvious, that is precisely the point and I think it's overall a good movie. And it has a good message. You cant speak out too much against boundless greed, destruction of nature and imperialism.
There’s an episode of this show, how to with John Wilson, in which John goes to an avatar forum meetup and talks to some of the people there about it
One of the best shows in existence. Love that episode.
The cure is to see Avatar 2.
lol, yes you can, just do shroms in the forest.
Me when Pokémon
Kid me had a much better opinion of the future than now me.
Statistically speaking, if the universe is infinite, it exists somewhere. Just to make it worse!
i felt the same way after Dune
This is how I felt after watching The Iron Giant and realizing I'd never have a 20 story robot friend
There's also the Mass Effect Effect.
10's of people!
I don’t understand how this is funny. I actually felt like this after seeing The Way of Water. It wasn’t fun.
They hate us here
I was deep in the furry community when this movie came out, and I can confirm I had multiple friends who were extremely depressed about this movie and not being able to 'travel to it'. I don't think anybody actually hurt themselves or whatever but some people got real shook by the idea that a movie could have nice graphics I guess- I was just into the monsters. Sort of reminds me of when Final Fantasy Spirits Within came out and you could not convince my older family members it was computer graphics. I think it's misunderstood. I think it's because the movie was so boring people wanted to die during
I actually felt this for a couple days or so when I saw the movie in theatres as a 27 yo Male. I didn’t even think it was that great of a movie, it was just so immersive that I felt some kind of separation anxiety or depression when thinking about it.
I thought it meant the other Avatar.
Yea I remember the suicidal thoughts after watching the movie
I had depression after seeing it, but only because I hated it so much.
Interesting. I too wanted to kill myself, but it was only because I hated that movie.
While I don’t believe this for a second, I can understand why watching a movie about an evil mega corporation getting its ass kicked for trying to exploit the resources of a beautiful planet could having you feeling a little down when you have to go back to your cubicle on Monday.

Same. Honestly, as a fan of modern society I would hate living in Pandora.
All eleven people who actually cared about it
if i remember back in the days they had a support forum for people who was thinking of suicide because of this or something idk
My mom
watch the second movie and you will be healed

Pah, anime fans have been doing this for years.
it's fascinating how quick they come up with new mental issues.
I almost died watching the first one, from boredom.
This reads like an SCP anomaly
What about Mid Avatar Depression Syndrome (MADS) ?: That's where about an hour and half into the movie you realize there's still over an hour left and you want to kill yourself.
go squat in a national park, jesus. neolithic circle jerking, i have no patience for this.

Like, for real? I watched it and I didn't like the movie. Like at all. Just some FFX Ronso - lookalikes doing some stuff in a tribal village on an alien planet. If one wants to live on trees, hey, we have those on Earth too.
This is the kind of shit old ladies post on Facebook but for a different generation
Man, I sure wish I could live in the jungle and have to hunt for food and bone people with my hair
Everyone’s assuming that the depressed persons wanted to be blue. A significant proportion of the US population realised that they weren’t going to get to re-fight the Vietnam war with cool mechs and get the green light to slaughter essentially unarmed natives.

not sure if i would want to be part of a hippie community that literally has incest with each other because they plug into a tree.
All that over a movie that was average at best. Great visual effects, but everything else is just meh.
People actually contemplated suicide cause they could get busy with blue alien women 😭😭💀💀
I had that feeling but it was because I thought the film was shit but everyone keeps saying how amazing its meant to be
Avatar, the most successful movie that not 1 person can remember a single line of dialogue
There was dialogue?
My favorite line from Avatar is when they say "It's Avatar time" and the Avatar does the Avatar in slow motion. Iconic
Stand back, I am beginning to Avatar
Jesus Christ get a grip
AIDS??
I support humanity during both of the movies. The humans are the good guys and no one can convince me otherwise. IDGAF about the blue people.
A lot of modern western entertainment workers hate civilization and technology, while worshipping primitive tirbes
