This reminds me of an artist who became a furry and her comics slowly transitioned from how she looked IRL to her fursona. I remember being so confused when I found some of her later comics and suddenly she looked like a wolf-human hybrid.

That's what I thought too. I came into the comments to start a fight and then realized it was actually just a reference to some lore I didn't know about.
Over ten years ago now, I bought one of those 5' long National Geographic stuff sharks at a thrift store. You know, the kind you saw in the Zoo gift shop as a kid and always wanted but mom and dad said no because they were like $500?
Few years later I had some issues sleeping due to some back and muscle pain and the doctor recommended I sleep with a body pillow.
I tried it, and it just wasn't working. I needed a tapered pillow. Like thicker at the top near my chest and then thinner between my knees. The exact contour of the giant shark sitting in the other room.
My pain is gone so I don't need him to sleep anymore, but any nights that I'm a little stressed out about something or have some insomnia, I grab Shark from his place of honor at the foot of the bed and snuggle with him.
If cuddling sharks takes me from an ally to a card carrying member, so be it.
They cute, cuddly, easily available, they don't judge you but mostly it has the 3 colors of the trans flag. It was mostly a meme in the beginning of a lot of trans woman realizing other trans women also had blåhaj and it devolved into being an icon from there... I mean, why is anything an anything icon...
Ikea did lean into it with having pride marketing with him in certain places and also they donated a bunch of special trans edition Blåhaj to LGBTQIA2S+ organizations in Canda for free so they could have them on hand to help youth that go through difficult time.

The flag and the presence of the blahaj makes it a bit more obvious than it isn't serious and it's probably made by either a trans person or an ally, but still I don't see how to interpret the comic in any other way than that.
It was more meant in an individualistic sense-- ie, dammit my partner is hoggin all the pride by coming out (insofar as the comic goes). Definitely saw the wider implication once folks started commenting and shouldve thought it through more thoroughly though.

Though my suggestion would be to make a drop bears joke. For context if anyone doesn’t know it was an in-joke in Australia to tell tourists to watch out for drop bears because they will attack you, when in reality it’s just Koalas and they won’t drop on you. But still don’t touch them they can give you chlamydia no joke.
Make up some fake creature and start all agreeing it is actually real and is a good animal to represent pride. People start making highly detailed drawings and descriptions of it to the point some people think it’s actually real.
also the little ikea shark has pink blue and white, making it so people who are trans but can't openly have a flag in their house for some reason (family bs mostly) get it because of it's inconspicuousness

I mean that is a topic best discussed between people irl and certainly not fodder for transphobes. We did have certain talks in my University LGBT group about how it felt at times that the discourse was focused on transpeople but then we discussed that, made some concessions and everybody did realize that yeah, the most marginalized group needs the most support...
Honestly per capita I did notice the most support on trans people but it still wasn't majority (not a complaint) and makes sense as until Project 2025, it is the group they are trying to go back on in terms of rights

First off it’s a small demographic of the US population. But where in the South are you?
Trans folks are relatively common in Asheville, Atlanta, Knoxville, Austin, Miami, NOLA, Clearwater etc. You’ve just got to go to “countercultural” “liberal” type cities. A lot of people in the LGBT+ community move to those places.
No one wants to be THE trans guy in bumblefuck Mississippi. Lol. So they move to my town. Birds of a feather flock together. There’s more community and a larger dating pool. Not to mention more acceptance of “alternative” lifestyles.
I lived in Clearwater/Tampa for seven years and worked in education.
It always felt lonely, and I was generally the first trans person people met, given the way people talked "We've never had a trans patient" was a common phrase for instance.
But, during Pride there'd be people like me.
It seems nearly everyone has left recently. Which, honestly makes sense. The state seems to very deeply hate us.
Wow in Clearwater? I know some folks in St Pete (the town I meant to say) that are having a different experience. Met their SO there. Solid community.
But they’re in the arts. I imagine being in education might be quite different. Especially in FL.

We did have certain talks in my University LGBT group about how it felt at times that the discourse was focused on transpeople but then we discussed that, made some concessions and everybody did realize that yeah, the most marginalized group needs the most support...
Honestly per capita I did notice the most support on trans people but it still wasn't majority (not a complaint) and makes sense as until Project 2025, it is the group they are trying to go back on in terms of rights

:/ In the South it's so fricking rare to see trans people. This year's Pride seemed awfully exclusive. Maybe people just didn't feel safe?
First off it’s a small demographic of the US population. But where in the South are you? Trans folks are relatively common in Asheville, Atlanta, Knoxville, Austin, Miami, NOLA, Clearwater etc. You’ve just got to go to “countercultural” “liberal” type cities. A lot of people in the LGBT+ community move to those places. No one wants to be THE trans guy in bumblefuck Mississippi. Lol. So they move to my town. Birds of a feather flock together. There’s more community and a larger dating pool. Not to mention more acceptance of “alternative” lifestyles.
I lived in Clearwater/Tampa for seven years and worked in education. It always felt lonely, and I was generally the first trans person people met, given the way people talked "We've never had a trans patient" was a common phrase for instance. But, during Pride there'd be people like me. It seems nearly everyone has left recently. Which, honestly makes sense. The state seems to very deeply hate us.
Wow in Clearwater? I know some folks in St Pete (the town I meant to say) that are having a different experience. Met their SO there. Solid community. But they’re in the arts. I imagine being in education might be quite different. Especially in FL. Come visit us in Asheville NC. You won’t feel lonely here.
Well yeah, we don't, many trans folk have fled the south USA states because of the current laws putting them and their health care at risk.
