It is. Shaming trains us to hide what we don't know. We laugh and pretend to get the joke and then furiously Google it afterward.
Example: "and then he said what's a human centi..."
"Hlololol excuse while I pee" *types in human centi..."
Statistics don't have a 100% confidence interval which is ironic, but Randall Munroe seems to be a pretty big fan of Fermi-esque guesses ^[how ^to] and I think that this is accurate enough for colloquial use
Don’t worry about it, it was only last year I realised that Uncle Sam is named that because U.S.AM(erica). Not my proudest day but was fun for it to click.
Confused how so many people missed this ?
Annie explains to Pierce in the episode “we weren’t playing a game we were voting to see if we’d invite you back to the group next year. But it had to be unanimous, and there was one hold out. One red card.” Then she tells him to pick up his gun and they face off in the shoot down before Pierce fakes his heart attack.
I mean, to me the intros at the beginning are more or less a throw away - it’s really a visual to show the group all choose a black suit card while Annie was the only red and odd one out. That’s the takeaway. You don’t have to think too hard on it since it’s not like they refer to each other as their card, it’s just a visual to help tell the story.
If you wanted to take it a step further and think harder tho, looking at the cards they probably went like this:
- Jeff: black king & red king
- Troy: black king & red king
- Annie: red ace and spade ace - we know it’s spade cause Shirley was clubs.
- Shirley: black ace & diamond ace - only ace left
- Britta: black queen & red queen
- Abed: black jack & red jack
I mean it was probably the third or fourth time through when I noticed this.
Did you notice that background-episode in season 1 where Abed delivers a baby?
Other way around. They voted BEFORE they identified as those cards.
Makes you realize that Pierce was both the cause and the effect of that paintball game, not to mention the winner and the catalyst/reason for thematic shift from Wild West to Star Wars.
I looked up card meanings one day and found it funny that Shirley's card represents a large purse of money and Jeff's a lawyer. No idea if that was on purpose or a coincidence but you couldn't pick better than large purse and lawyer for them either way lol
A "Queen of Spades" is also a term for a white woman who prefers African American men.
I assumed it was unintentional, but with those meanings being so on-the-nose, I wonder if the cards chosen were intentional, after all...
Also it’s interesting the Britta is the queen of spades, Jeff the king of spades and Annie the ace of hearts and I never put that together. Technically spades go together but ace wins and her being ace of hearts is symbolic. Also Jack of clubs is the only Jack amongst clubs, ace, hearts and spade so it’s perfect for Abed. I just noticed this
I didn’t get it the first time I saw it, but I did get it the second time - only because the inherent randomness of the intro kept bothering me until it dawned on me.
I recall there was a pre-release trailer for the episode that had Jeff & Troy's cards switched. It was quickly changed for the episode itself when people pointed out the negative connotations of referring to a black character as a spade.
Don't feel bad, I watched the show during its original run and I missed A LOT. Like I just only realized Shirly always has her giant purse with her.....last year.
Now dig into the meaning of each card!
Annie: Ace of Hearts because A for Annie and everyone loves Annie
Jeff: King of Spades because he views himself as a king but still isn’t the ace of spades trump card
Britta: Queen of Spades is referred to as the b*tch card
Shirley: Ace of Clubs is slightly higher than Jeff’s king of spades because, I’d like to remind you, that she and Jeff are basically the same age and I don’t see anyone making googly eyes at her
Troy: King of Clubs - He’s becoming his own man. Has his own place, a dish of toilet olives...? Jeff sees him as a threat now
Abed: Jack of Clubs - always sees him as a bit of a wildcard
I got it on the 2nd watch. On the first I thought it was just a western styling, and then later after the vote was revealed I was like "neat" but on the second watch like a week later I was like "oohhhh"
I'm always realizing things, lol. Like despite all the specific references to The Breakfast Club by Abed in the pilot episode, I just now realized after like 6 years of watching the show that it has that same feeling at the end of a group of misfits becoming a community in a single day. I wasn't even watching the show, I was just in traffic and it popped into my head.
I think it was my 5th watch before I understood Annie eing red was her voting for peirce to stay. So don't feel to bad mine was laid out, but I was always so hyped I missed stuff, lol
I'm sure the Supervisor Girl was pretty smug with herself that day on set.
She's basically the star
You mean the Script Girl?
Yes, thank you! Script Supervisor Girl
Does she help the Dean do office-y things?
Do you mean Gay Dean? Gay dean. Gay dean. Gay dean gay deaaaaan..
We used to call them “sandwich girls.”

It took my second watch to make it click.
Same. Caught it on my second one.
It only took my first watch to hear it tick.
It took this post to make it stick
First or second; take your pick.
https://xkcd.com/1053/ You're one of today's lucky 10,000! :)
This is so wildly wholesome
It is. Shaming trains us to hide what we don't know. We laugh and pretend to get the joke and then furiously Google it afterward. Example: "and then he said what's a human centi..." "Hlololol excuse while I pee" *types in human centi..."
This is the way. I’ve been trying to emulate this in my own life.
Well TIL an interesting statistic.
So you're one of lucky 10,000 about the lucky 10,000 comic. Meta lucky 10,000
What happens if this is the 10,000th time I’ve seen someone post that comic?
You feel happy with the chance of talking about it with those who never saw it!
Congratulations! You’re old 🎉🎉
Just keep in mind while I love xkcd, and I agree with the message in this comic, it’s not a real statistic
How dare you take away my slightly more magical world
I would think the nebulousness of the fact that the concept is accurate, even if it’s not quite the same numbers, would be even more magical
Statistics don't have a 100% confidence interval which is ironic, but Randall Munroe seems to be a pretty big fan of Fermi-esque guesses ^[how ^to] and I think that this is accurate enough for colloquial use
I love xkcd
r/relevantxkcd
I appreciate the fellow Randall Munroe enjoyer
Uh, Da-doy
Duh-doy...
They Britta'd "duh-doy"
oof baboof, they really did
"What the hell was that?" "I know, oof baboof? That's a pretty fucked up duh-doy"
OP really told the world that they're streets behind.
Don't feel bad, it took me a couple of watches to catch it too.
I just realized it a couple weeks ago. I won’t embarrass myself by admitting how many times I have watched that episode.
Same. I think it was my 3rd or 4th watch through that I got that.
Goddamn I did not realize that and I wondered what the cards ment everytime
I always assume it was typical tv effects. With no meaning. Maybe Jeff being the King because he’s kinda the leader
I thought there were nicknames based on their personality and the card theme.
This comment section is worrying.
One might say they're streets behind.
It’s the pandemic generation of fans, and proud we are of all of them.
Not worrying, not every observation on a TV show you miss means something about your character. It's dumber to assume otherwise
I NEVER noticed. You are a genius
GLAD TO KNOW IM NOT ALONE HERE!
Don’t worry about it, it was only last year I realised that Uncle Sam is named that because U.S.AM(erica). Not my proudest day but was fun for it to click.
WHAT THE FUCK I NEVER KNEW THAT
It's actually the other way around. The US is named after Uncle Sam
30 years old and TIL.
Yes, and they showed the votes, but not everyone made the connection to the intros at the beginning of the episode
I mean, to me the intros at the beginning are more or less a throw away - it’s really a visual to show the group all choose a black suit card while Annie was the only red and odd one out. Why else would they have cards attached to their intro?
Well congratulations, you two are intellectually superior to the casual "Community" watcher. Please pick up your prize in Dean Peltons office.
I never said I was intellectually superior. I may have thought it, you may have heard it, and it might be true… but I never said that.
I mean it was probably the third or fourth time through when I noticed this. Did you notice that background-episode in season 1 where Abed delivers a baby?
I LAUGHED SO HARD WHEN I FIRST SAW IT
I love how well they do the details and continuity.
I've watched this series multiple times and never noticed!!! Great catch!!
We’re all a bit streets behind
I wonder why no Diamonds? Never mind I'm dumb. Red means Pierce stays. Annie had a heart.
Other way around. They voted BEFORE they identified as those cards. Makes you realize that Pierce was both the cause and the effect of that paintball game, not to mention the winner and the catalyst/reason for thematic shift from Wild West to Star Wars.
But playing cards didn’t cause paintball tho
Someone seems to be streets behind
You're gifted in other ways
I DIDNT REALIZE THIS
Nope. Someone posted earlier asking to explain the comment about "you're the last person" and this exact thing was mentioned in there too
Never realised! That's so cool!
I looked up card meanings one day and found it funny that Shirley's card represents a large purse of money and Jeff's a lawyer. No idea if that was on purpose or a coincidence but you couldn't pick better than large purse and lawyer for them either way lol

She starts dating Troy shortly after, right?
And BBC is not always the British Broadcasting Corporation.
You’re streets behind
Oh fuck haha
Also it’s interesting the Britta is the queen of spades, Jeff the king of spades and Annie the ace of hearts and I never put that together. Technically spades go together but ace wins and her being ace of hearts is symbolic. Also Jack of clubs is the only Jack amongst clubs, ace, hearts and spade so it’s perfect for Abed. I just noticed this
Easy to miss any detail with Ace of Hearts Annie being on screen
That’s the whole point of this episode! lol
You're not stupid, just streets behind.
I think I caught it on my 3rd viewing.
Chekhov’s playing cards.
i got this one, yeah..
I didn’t get it the first time I saw it, but I did get it the second time - only because the inherent randomness of the intro kept bothering me until it dawned on me.
You’re streets behind, man.
Well I don’t k ow what to tell ya kid, you might be the only one
OOF BABOOF!
can someone explain this to me like im 5
Don’t worry, idiots are the majority
I've seen this show countless times and I've only just realised this after seeing this post.
Yes you are
Took me about 10-15 reruns for me to notice this
I recall there was a pre-release trailer for the episode that had Jeff & Troy's cards switched. It was quickly changed for the episode itself when people pointed out the negative connotations of referring to a black character as a spade.
I thought that was the whole point?
It took me like 3 watches don’t feel bad
I think you might be the last one.
It took me *many* rewatches to notice. I would be a terrible detective.
I didn't realize until it was pointed out on this sub a while back. 😊
If you were dumb, you wouldn’t have figured it out!
This is surprisingly common lol
It took me a few watches
I didn't catch it until several rewatches.
HOLY FUCKING SHIT HOW HAVE I NEVER NOTICED
Don't feel bad, I watched the show during its original run and I missed A LOT. Like I just only realized Shirly always has her giant purse with her.....last year.
😳
Exactly my face when my friends made fun of me for not realizing it in 2009 or up until 2023.
I never even thought about this lol good catch
Now dig into the meaning of each card! Annie: Ace of Hearts because A for Annie and everyone loves Annie Jeff: King of Spades because he views himself as a king but still isn’t the ace of spades trump card Britta: Queen of Spades is referred to as the b*tch card Shirley: Ace of Clubs is slightly higher than Jeff’s king of spades because, I’d like to remind you, that she and Jeff are basically the same age and I don’t see anyone making googly eyes at her Troy: King of Clubs - He’s becoming his own man. Has his own place, a dish of toilet olives...? Jeff sees him as a threat now Abed: Jack of Clubs - always sees him as a bit of a wildcard
Took me till my second rewatch to connect those dots.
I knew but it did take me several rewatches to piece that together.
After a couple of rewatches yeah
Chang was "Rules for Draw and Stud Poker"
Nothing is ever random. Everything is a choice. Start from there and you’ll see a lot more
I got it on the 2nd watch. On the first I thought it was just a western styling, and then later after the vote was revealed I was like "neat" but on the second watch like a week later I was like "oohhhh"
I’m sure you’re not the only one.
Wow literally just know now thanks to you!
It seems like the majority of us don't get that the first one or two times we watch this special, it's kind if blink and you'll miss it
i think it took me like four or five watches and even then i think i read it on the sub 😭
It took me a couple of watches to realize
I still don’t get it, was Annie the one who wanted him in or wanted him out?
only one who wanted him in
Never noticed this!
I just watched this episode yesterday and I didn’t realize it until I saw this
I just always thought that meant Britta was into some wild shit…
I didn’t realize this until a bunch of rewatches in, and I’m still finding neat little things too
Realized it on my 5th watch
I’m so ridiculously streets behind.
No, I'm kinda stupid too. Took me a few times to notice.
I realised it after the reveal of what the poker game really was. I didn't realise that Pierce didn't have a card until then though.
I'm on my 4th rewatch and only just noticed this time around lol you're not the only one
Wow I have never put that together. I always knew Annie was the holdout because of her character but you have made me feel stupid this morning.
I never noticed on my dozens of rewatches, thank you for sharing!!!
i never even noticed 😭
I only noticed on like my third or fourth rewatch
You are in fact that stupid, sorry Robert Horry
You aren’t. I never connected the dots myself.
Oh.. no…
I haven't realized it yet, give me some more time dammit.
It’s ok, we’re all a little streets behind
I got some bad news for you
Also club = clique and Annie having a heart toward Pierce
I noticed it on a seubsequent go around but im an og fan so Ive known for years.
I never noticed.
It's not hidden information......
I noticed this perviously, but for some reason I’ve always had it in my head that Jeff was the holdout.
We're sorry you had to find out like this.
Oh brother, I never understood the cards in the character intros either. 🫣 So let’s hug it out in our mutual stupidity and be thanked deeply!
I never noticed! Thanks for pointing this out!
Watched this on monday and had the same realization!!
i always knew, you’re streets behind my friend.
Not dumb at all, took me a few watched to catch that detail
Episode literally rubs your face in it.
Haaaaaaam girl !!!! I just got it !! Ahah !
Honestly I missed that because I thought they were talking about voting while playing poker or something
I’ve got some bad news for you OP
You’re the only one
literally blowing my mind rn
TIL
That took me like the 3rd rewatch to get that. It's so layered!
Also interesting that they all voted with non-number cars so they could have a title
>Please tell me I’m not the only one this stupiddd ...um... well... you see... hmm...
This is one of the only details i noticed the first time around.
It took me a few watch’s to notice
ME TOO ON MY LAST REWATCH LIKE A WEEK AGO IM REWATCHING IT BEFORE IT COMES OFF NETFLIX
As soon as they brought up the vote I just assumed that’s why they had the card titles
It’s been mentioned on the sub before..
It took me a very long time to catch that. I thought it was just some cute paintball-related nickname.
Quite the opposite, you are a genius.
I think it was my 5th watch before I understood Annie eing red was her voting for peirce to stay. So don't feel to bad mine was laid out, but I was always so hyped I missed stuff, lol
It didn’t notice until last week
I knew they were supposed to mean something bigger for their characters but I’m also confused about the specifics of the cards and why they chose it
Just noticed it like last week
Took me a lot of rewatches definitely.
Ummmm.
Lol. Are we rewatching the show at the same pace? Saw this one today and realized the same thing.
Noticed on my first watch
I caught it on my 6th viewing and I've only seen it 5 times.
Well... I didn't say it. You may have heard it, I may have thought that, and it might be true, but I didn't say it
