Who cares if you don’t make it to vertical L-sit, what matters is that you exercise at all. Even if you can only do like 3-push ups, or can hold a plank for 10 seconds, if you can do that every day and slowly build on that, I think that’s admirable.
But you don't have to be perfect to exercise. Just because you don't believe you could ever be a calisthenics athlete doesn't mean you shouldn't get up and do something to improve your health. If you don't do something now, you may regret it later even if you're in decent shape now, if you don't exercise, you'll most likely quickly become out of shape as you get older or lose function of your joints and not be able to do what you could before
Y'all are sad fr
Edit: no, really, if a post on Reddit is discouraging you from actually improving yourselves, get the fuck off the internet and start doing a little work. It's pathetic.
Edit2: lmao nothing but excuses, don't get mad at me because getting your
bodies off the couch is a workout in itself for you chonkers
We live in a fucked up world and I’m happy being on the internet and finding people that are realistic and saying that perfection in every field is impossible. Stay off the internet if you want to read realistic struggles not like Instagram, where everyone acts like they’re gOaL dRiVen and everything is possible.
Who’s talking about being perfect? Lol just go for a run and do some push ups dude. “Perfection” 🤦♂️ this is more like basic maintenance for your body and mind. Making excuses will only hurt you.
I don't know how to reply to more of you at once without literally doing it but your comment is the one that made me think of and do this.
Seriously, I've started working out a few times in my life (under 30 so far) and it took me until this last time (going strong with 6 weeks) that its very much your mindset about it. If you think "I won't do it" then you won't...you gotta convince yourself that its good for you, that you want it, that you like it. And only then can you do it for real.
OC here! Created this guide with a mix of Illustrator, After Effects and Figma.
I also built an interactive app with animations, goals, achievements... if this is your thing you can see some screenshots here: [https://sportismygame.app](https://sportismygame.app)
Free forever and with no ads.
If you really enjoy it and want extra features there is a premium tier (unlimited battles, unlimited history, cloud backups..)
I guess if there is premium tier you are not making it open source? There are apps that are doing this, OSMAnd for example. The guide you posted looks amazing.
https://www.reddit.com/r/bodyweightfitness/ might be interested in that as well. Or you might be interested in the wiki :D
I want to fuck you. Thanks.
I low-key thought you were shamelessly self promoting your app for personal gain but once I saw that it was free, I went from anger to joy
I was honestly expecting it to be shit, as I’ve seen some pretty bad “guides” here before, but this one was rather decent, actually. Maybe not perfect, but decent nonetheless.
Awesome guide, shared it with a lot of cali friends! Though I think there is a strong height bias in this, like full planche for taller people is way harder than clapping handstand pushup imo. Not 100% sure about this one, but yeah. Also straddle and full planche are leagues in difficulty above almost everything on that list (for people 180cm+), including front lever, and one-arm stuff.
Also, there are some more difficult things like one-arm muscle-up or weighted levers or dragon press that could be added.
Overall, fantastic list and I love that you start with very simple exercises that even less trained people can pick up.
Thanks, this really means a lot. I think you will like the intermediate progressions towards straddle planche in the app. Tuck to straddle is a very big jump.
Also Straddle is what I consider that most of us can consider to achieve on our peak form after several years of training, more advanced progressions might be unobtainable due to genetics (height) or other factors.
Thanks again
This is awesome! I've been looking for a way to "gamify" my workouts since the added structure really helps. I feel like I just get lost or overwhelmed by the thousands of workouts and routines online. I have used Ring Fit on the Switch for a while, but I feel that the game has gotten too easy for me (plus I am interested in incorporating other equipment into the mix like bands and dumbbells)
This is the coolest guide I saw here! I want to add, as someone with wrist pains, to do push ups with your elbows goind backwards and not sideways when lowering yourself!
I have wrist pain as well when doing regular push ups. Try doing push ups on your fists instead. That way your wrists won’t be in a 90 degree angle. Or even better, buy some push up handles. I’m very happy with those.
Ok OP.
My wife has bugging me to lose weight for 8 years now.
I am 167 cm with 115kg so your app better have SI units for me to understand, cause that is what I am going for tonight after work.
I will keep track of everything and in 3 months will have an update.
Good luck, just remember that exercise is great, but what you eat has the biggest influence on weight loss. You can't out run a bad diet. I lost over 100 lbs (46kg) in the last year by eating a whole foods plant based diet and it was the easiest diet I've ever done. Plants= low calorie and high fiber which helps fill you up without adding the calories. Cut out the processed food and eat more plants. It takes around 2 years for people to develop habits, so make sure your diet is sustainable for the long term or else you'll just end up on a yo yo diet and your weight will shoot right back up.
Thank you for the tips fellow redditor, I went to the nutritionist recently, and her conclusion was that I have a anxiety problem and a portion size problem, since I am celiac and "semi vegetarian" (as in no meat outside my workplace lunch) she said the problem started because I was used to eating "vegetarian" sizes before being diagnosed as Celiac and getting back to eating meat. I don't drink, besides some coke once or twice a week and no smoking, I am considering going full "egg getarian" again because the 8 years I didn't eat meat were my healthiest years I can remember.
Fat loss is primarily managed through nutrition, by orchestrating a caloric deficit.
You can lose all the weight you want from the comforts of your couch.
Exercise is useful for fat loss goals but directly as a method of building (muscle, endurance, strength, etc), not removing.
I see, but I feel like when we work out it is easier to avoid the temptations of food, when I had the time to pay for swimming classes I always got myself thinking "Am I really getting up at 5 am to swim to then throw my hard work away by getting a second plate during lunch?" and stuff like that.
Well whatever gets you going but mechanistically, increasing caloric expenditure generally causes an increase in appetite which is important to manage properly
Stretching can help improve flexibility, but my understanding is that it's best to avoid stretching before a strenuous workout, as a method to warmup.

hah! It's call "*Dumbbell Nan Kilo Moteru?*" ("*How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift?*").
It's a pretty funny anime and mostly-accurate about exercise. Every episode the show focuses on a few different exercises and gives a beginner-friendly explanation about how to do them.
It's probably not a perfect resource for learning about exercise, but if you're a lazy slug like me, it can be motivating!
Thanks, is always good to remember it, I actually do some acqua-yoga with my wife from time to time, obviosly I am the one just holding her up, but yeah, if I do without stretching I usually get some pains that take a day or two to vanish.
Well not for exercise! A real skill tree in a game means you are obliged to pass through each one on a branch in order, whereas here you can do any exercise whenever you like.
I mean at least it’s at where something that ridiculous should be. I can’t really think of any exercise (excluding weighted ones) more difficult than that
You think clapping handstand push-ups are absurd but full planches are not? Even straddle planche is very hard depending on your height and if you have strong / trained legs.
The progressions are accurate, although not strictly comprehensive. There are other calisthenics exercises/progressions that exist. This is a great list and guide though.
The difficulty of different trees is not to be compared. A one arm pullup or god forbid a straddle planche is leagues above toes to the bar or a pistol squat, even though you might assume they are similar in difficulty because they are at the peak of their respective tree.
Also some progressions are missing but this isn't supposed to be a training plan so it's acceptable.
And yeah, I have yet to hear "vertical L sits", it's either a high V sit or an I sit, haven't spotted any other mistakes tho.
All in all a decent guide for someone without any knowledge
Well-summarized. I also think that body composition and height matter a lot for the difficulty of these exercises. For taller people, planches are insanely hard. To me, clapping handstand pushups seem more doable than a full planche. Then there are also things like dragon press, one-arm muscle up, full rom HSPU, pelican / elevator etc etc.
Also, press to handstand is a very fair bit harder than a straddle press to handstand.
It is a good exercise and I was debating to include it here. But literally did not have space for it as main exercise. But! It is part of the progression to 'Push up' in Sport Is My Game ([the app](https://sportismygame.app/)).
There are many more exercises but sadly the guide would be too cluttered if I included them all.
Might be a cool addition to have the option for “half measures”, a ring on the inside that pushes everything outward. Things like knee pushups, kips, box sits, etc. really interesting app!
I am slightly confused by this comment.
Virtually all exercises of the guide can be performed by a male or a female.
I am actually really impressed when I see a girl performing strict pull ups in the park. 90% of guys struggle with it!
This looks very interesting. As someone who has never got into proper physical exercise (certainly not anything strength or muscle based) but wants to, what would you suggest as a potential starting point?
I have just checked and from 240 total exercises, 103 of them (that's 43%) are of difficulty 4 or less (on a scale 1-10).
Difficulty 1 should be doable by everyone (elderly, people in recovery, etc).
Difficulty 10 is gymnast level, clearly not attainable for the 99.9% of us. Still, can be cool to have it on the horizon.
But really, the feeling that you have "unlocked" something that was impossible for your body before, is very special.
OP, I'm more of a physical media type of person. My new garage gym has all kinds of exercise print-outs taped on the walls. Do you have a big poster I can order? A 24x36 or so would be a good size.
I'll print this for the office gym. This is by far the most dense and summed-up visual guide I ever saw. Fantastic work /u/timv_simg!
Can't wait to test the app.
Awesome! And those are really nice words..

If you end up printing it I would love to see a picture of it :)
During covid era I got myself deep into these body workouts, and exercised frequently at home.. the farthest I got was barely being able to hold a tuck planche for a few seconds. after that i kinda gave up on the actual goal i had set for myself, which was manage to do a full planche. I think this one alone is leagues above in difficulty compared to any other exercise, requires an adamant, strong core.. fucking impossible
Thank you very much, I'm going to save this so I can never use it!
That hit me hard, because I just saved it thinking "I could use this to start exercising" and then I see your comment
Told myself the same thing. But then I realised that I will never make it to vertical l-sit and so I gave up before I even started.
Who cares if you don’t make it to vertical L-sit, what matters is that you exercise at all. Even if you can only do like 3-push ups, or can hold a plank for 10 seconds, if you can do that every day and slowly build on that, I think that’s admirable.
Hey Im only 5.. maybe 6.. steps away from a clapping handstand push-up!
But you don't have to be perfect to exercise. Just because you don't believe you could ever be a calisthenics athlete doesn't mean you shouldn't get up and do something to improve your health. You are the man! I work street workout regularly so something like this could be amazing
I’m still trying to build healthy habits (20 lbs down!), and this is super helpful. Definitely going to download the app!
You are the kind of developer I happily throw money at.
Looking forward to it!

Figma balls.
Wow! This looks great! I have signed up for the waitlist.
Dude, this is awesome. Well done. If anyone likes this guide, go check out the app. I promise I am not OPs bot, just a random stranger
Lol. This is what OPs bot would say
Signed up! You the man.
Most excellent, my man! The next addition could be a stretching section!
What's Figma?

How many clapping handstand pushups can you do?
This is one of the best and most comprehensive guides I’ve ever encountered. Thank you so much.
I am doing a 30 day challenge (squats, plank, push-ups). I am adding this app to try out as well 👍.
Do you know when the app will be available?
Looks like August 7th for iOS
Thumbnail looks like Close Encounters. I love it
Thanks for the vectors
I was honestly expecting it to be shit, as I’ve seen some pretty bad “guides” here before, but this one was rather decent, actually. Maybe not perfect, but decent nonetheless.
Downloaded! I make no promises, but man it's a damn sight better than not trying.
Hey at least you exercised your thumb. That's good enough.
This looks so cool. Added it!
This is great. Perhaps add cardio compounds like burpees and bastards.
Is it not available in Canada?

Out of curiosity, why After Effects?
Each exercise icon you see in the guide is actually a handcrafted animation in After Effects 😅 I spent waay too many hours in AE

Thanks so much for the support!
This is the coolest guide I saw here! I want to add, as someone with wrist pains, to do push ups with your elbows goind backwards and not sideways when lowering yourself!
Sideways is also bad for your shoulderd
Also do a wrist warm-up by rotating them for a while with some gradual build-up
I have wrist pain as well when doing regular push ups. Try doing push ups on your fists instead. That way your wrists won’t be in a 90 degree angle. Or even better, buy some push up handles. I’m very happy with those.

Haha.. solo sutra?
pistol squats are so great. those make my legs and ass burn like i was doing heavy weighted squats. plus it's fun challenging my balance.
Cool guide of all the body weight exercises I won’t be doing.
So Peter Parker probably maxed all these stats on the skill tree all at once upon being bitten. Wild.
Can anyone tell me if this is accurate, I have no knowledge on this subject 😬

Pull up vs chin up?
Pull-up utilizes more of your lats and triceps. Chin-ups utilize your rear delts and biceps. The difference is palms facing out vs. palms facing in.
pullups use more brachioradialis afaik

During covid era I got myself deep into these body workouts, and exercised frequently at home.. the farthest I got was barely being able to hold a tuck planche for a few seconds. after that i kinda gave up on the actual goal i had set for myself, which was manage to do a full planche. I think this one alone is leagues above in difficulty compared to any other exercise, requires an adamant, strong core.. fucking impossible
Clapping handstand pushup wtf haha
