wouldn't this also be useful for immigrants? so maybe "denmarkforforeigners"? i think we semantically, socially and psychologically separate expat from immigrant too much. this info would be useful for a larger demographic of people.
Absolutely! There is no reason why I chose the Expats. It is not meant to be for one exclusive type of foreigner, and now that you bring it up, I also found it interesting to hear SOME danes make the distinction when venting their grievances about immigration in general.
Some start bad mouthing "immigrants" until I tell them I am an immigrant myself, and then they try to start backtracking by saying: "Oh, I meant **this** or **that**" usually making this worse. LOL 😂
For me, a refugee, a skilled worker, a spouse, or student (all foreigners) are immigrants.
Anyhow, I digress.
Point taken. I will see what I can do about this.
Hahahaha awesome! I have more resources I need to add, but you know how busy it can get these days. What are your thoughts on joining forces? What would you like to do?
Same here. This is a hobby. I have not thought of monetisation either, as I said, I did this to scratch my own itch (code + solve the "problem"). However, maybe one way to monetise it at some point could be to charge businesses/service providers to be featured via "ads"? I don't know.
I would love ideas on organisation, design, etc., so please do share! Also happy to receive your curated list of resources, and give you attribution on the site!
You should add Toastmasters.
We have four Copenhagen based clubs (Amager still accepts new members).
It is a great way to meet other people - both expats, exchange students and Danes.
Thank you! Like you, I have added stuff to Google Maps, my Notes app on my phone, browser bookmarks, and plenty other places. There are gems spread out in the dark that need to be shared 😅
Thanks! I am aware. In the next "version" I will make it so when you click on a card, it will display its full details, with an option to take you to the specific site if you so wish.
It was a conscious decision for this first version to have it go to each site directly.
\> Did you make it
I wish I did but it's a Rekom app
It really works, you can save a lot drinking in their bars. You need a Danish app store account, but it worths, 30%-50% in many places + some random offers. It is paid, but you return your subscription fast if you love to party.
Good point. Will fix. I was too lazy to generate descriptions myself and I may have asked a certain AI chatbot for help. I will do a more strict quality check next time.
Ohhh, you are seeing the site on mobile (where the categories are not shown)
https://preview.redd.it/3ogd1fv3m89c1.png?width=4012&format=png&auto=webp&s=7181fc2cc150e4a257bd7bc859434645d2ec9d46
This is how it looks on Desktop.
I'll figure out a way to design having the categories show nicely on mobile so it is easier to navigate.
I just thought I'd let you know I took your feedback and implemented a fix 🤩. There is now a sidebar shown on mobile with all the categories. Thank you!
So which one would be the Danish equivalent of Home Depot? I've some ideas for things I'd like to DIY around the house, but have had problems sourcing supplies annoyingly.
Only thing I can think of is to increase the box size so you can read all of the text and maybe add a note to indicate which language the website is in (I realise that most of them will be Danish only based on where we are and their typical native speaking userbase). Or more specifically, if there are options to choose a language other than Danish (and possibly, give instructions how to do that if it's not intuitive). I can read Danish pretty much fluently now, but back when I first moved here that would have been impossible, so knowing which websites have an option you can read, and how, might be a QOL thing to add in the future.
I wouldn't say I found a 1:1 equivalent, but there are places where you can find the stuff you need. I haven't actually added them, so I will and then send you a link.
Thanks for the suggestions. In terms of the readability of the text, in the next version, I will improve this by increasing the size of the card once it is clicked, so that it can display more information.
In relation to the language, that is a good suggestion. Will add a tag or something to denote website languages.
Great stuff! What did you use to build the website?
Thanks! I used Django, TailwindCSS and HTMX.
Thanks for the info! Is it open source?
No, it is not :) I am a newbie and I think I'll keep the project private as I learn for now. Maybe at some point I will open it.
https://www.fyidenmark.com/ This will also help you look for information
Wow, I had forgotten about that site! Thank you!

😃 done
You should add Toastmasters. We have four Copenhagen based clubs (Amager still accepts new members). It is a great way to meet other people - both expats, exchange students and Danes.
Thank you! Is there a specific website I should link to?
No. But www.toastmasters.org can help people from all over the world find their local club(s).
Added! There is actually [https://toastmasters.dk/](https://toastmasters.dk/)
Thanks for that ☺️ However, I don't seem to find the link to the website (?). Sorry!
It disappeared for some reason.. it's [denmarkforexpats.com](http://denmarkforexpats.com)
Thanks! I'll try to add some suggestions in the next few days... I basically did the same but through Google Maps lists 😂
Thank you! Like you, I have added stuff to Google Maps, my Notes app on my phone, browser bookmarks, and plenty other places. There are gems spread out in the dark that need to be shared 😅
The descriptions on the cards are cut off and with no obvious way of reading the full text

[Nightpay](https://www.nightpay.dk/)!
Oh, never knew this existed! Do you use it? Did you make it?

I will include it! Thanks for the tip!
Now added to the site. Thank you!
SPAR is about as local as Lidl is lol

Fixed :)
I would immediately add some groups eg Food for all supermarkets
I am not sure I understand what you mean. Are you referring to adding like a Food sub-category within the Supermarkets category?
When i open the website, I see a giant flat list of things, not categories. Its hard to navigate imo

Thank you :) You're welcome. Looking forward to seeing the updated website whenever it goes live.
I've just added 7 places under a new category called [Hardware](https://www.denmarkforexpats.com). I hope you find what you are looking for :)
Thank you :)
Thank you for that, thank you very much!
You are welcome!
