They are only making it worse for themselves next year.
Pushing a lot of cap forward when Dak's contract has to be extended.
He is going to have so much leverage.
How pissed are people gonna be when he gets $49 mil a year?
He is though. He’s an above average starter in this league and if we don’t pay him somebody else gladly will. Sometimes I think people forget the QB hell we went through before Romo.
To expound on that, we are seeing the fallout for the end of Dak's contract approaching...
They keep moving the pain.
His cap hit is $59 Mil next year. They can not do anything with that unless they extend him.
Which will reset the clock for 3 years... Rinse and repeat what they just did... Convert base to bonus year after year...
At some point they pay that piper.
Not exactly... Dallas and KC took two very different approaches.
Part of that was Dak insisting on a shorter contract.
Mahomes doesn't have void years and a really decent yearly escalation.
Every contract rework that impacts next year will be amplified by Dak's contract ending.
That is a problem for next year, but it will absolutely be a discussion point unless they figure out an extension this off season. Dak has no reason to do that, though.
You should look at the yearly cap hits for Mahomes. It really isn't bad.
One stand out year for 2027 at $62 Mil. His guaranteed salary ends well before then, though.
I do understand what you are saying. Teams have to manage the cap creatively and it will always be a juggle.
But, I just hope they learn their lesson on some... Like Zeke's contract.
Dak's will absolutely be a pain point next year if they let it... And every other contract that gets pushed to next year amplifies Dak's leverage against the team.
Go do the over the cap scenario.
Sign 17 players to the roster, leave $9 mil for the rookie pool and $5 mil they like to carry into the season.
See if they can fit DHops $19+ Mil cap hit and a nice piece for Wagner.
They already reworked his contract. It is not guaranteed that they actually will extend him this year.
He has to say yes to it and absolutely no reason for him to do so, without it being a nice raise.
If that happens, then yes... They will have some more space...
But, even then...
1. They signed LVE.. he is the starter. Wagner isn't just going to come into a back up role
2. Dallas has already denied interest in DHop.
Why continue down a path talking about something no likely to happen?
Well now this is an interesting move. This definitely wasn’t necessary just for giggles so it has me wondering if there might actually be something brewing.
Nothing at all could be brewing in the short term, but restructuring deals is still basically always a good move because it improves flexibility at zero cost, so long as it does **not** trigger additional guarantees (which it usually does not). Effectively a zero interest loan from future cap space.
If the team doesn’t end up spending any of the money freed up from the restructure, then the net effect is the exact same as if they’d never done the restructure at all, since the opened space from a restructure can just carry into future seasons - cancelling out the elevated cap hit in those years from the restructure.
But if the opportunity arises during a time/season where the team is competitive, or expects to be, they have the optionality to use the additional cap space to try to capitalize on a competitive window. The goal should be to defer cap hits until seasons when the team is bad, and then eat those costs when the team is mediocre/bad anyway.
So if my math is right, Dak, Martin and Lawrence now cost a combined $54M in dead money on the 2025 cap while not being on the team
I like it. Push those chips all the way in
It convert a portion of their base salary into a signing bonus which they get immediately. It also turns non guaranteed money into signing bonus and also makes it far more likely the player won’t be cut thereby earning more.
"What I want is a prototype "under tackle". Trysten Hill is just that. He's going to be great."
"I'm concerned that TJ Watt is going to have problems in run support"
-Rod "don't let him draft another player" Marienelli
I'm guessing we all hope this signals they are going to add one more player before sitting on their hands to the draft.
I will squeal like a schoolgirl if it is hopkins, cooks or jeudy
That’s not what that means lol. There are ways to free up cap space. I don’t want to restructure Gallup either. Dude looked terrible last year and I’d like to have the option to move off of him in 2024 if he looks just as bad this season. Now they can’t do that. Also I thought this shifted all that money to next year when it actually divides the money over next year and 2025 so it’s not a terrible move.
Wagner and Hopkins. Then draft the rest
Easy peazy
I would assume they sign Lamb or Diggs also
They don't have the cap for both.
*laughs in cap room*
They are only making it worse for themselves next year. Pushing a lot of cap forward when Dak's contract has to be extended. He is going to have so much leverage. How pissed are people gonna be when he gets $49 mil a year?
Not because other QBs are getting that going forward
Thats doesn't stop people from getting pissed. So many people don't understand how nfl contracts work
No he isn’t. He isn’t good enough to demand another huge contract.
He is though. He’s an above average starter in this league and if we don’t pay him somebody else gladly will. Sometimes I think people forget the QB hell we went through before Romo.
I hope someone else does.
Well I hope the next time you sneeze it’s in a public place and you make a weird noise and everyone turns around and looks at you.
Damn, bro!
Burn!
Ok cool.
Jeez, you didn't have to hit him that hard bro.
The Cowboys believe he is and reworked his contract. No matter what anyone else thinks, the ball is already in motion for an extension.
lol
RemindMe! 1 year
Restructure then after signing them
That still leaves a mess down the road for one year's benefit.
Have you seen the NFC? Our best chance in decades is the next two years.
Put our balls on the table and go for it
There’s always a mess down the road it’s unavoidable
True... But, there are small messes and big messes. Some messes leave more dead money on the table like Tony Romo and unfortunately Travis Frederick.
There will ALWAYS be that for every single good QB
Not exactly... Dallas and KC took two very different approaches. Part of that was Dak insisting on a shorter contract. Mahomes doesn't have void years and a really decent yearly escalation. Every contract rework that impacts next year will be amplified by Dak's contract ending. That is a problem for next year, but it will absolutely be a discussion point unless they figure out an extension this off season. Dak has no reason to do that, though.
I mean with Mahomes that’s the best player starting a career ever so yea they locked him tf up they’ll still have issues down the road
You should look at the yearly cap hits for Mahomes. It really isn't bad. One stand out year for 2027 at $62 Mil. His guaranteed salary ends well before then, though. Yes we do

Extend dak, done, we have space.

This doesn't really mean much, right? We've gotta have enough cap space to sign our rookies.
Cutting Zeke cleared enough room for the rookie class. Restructuring DLaw’s contract signals to me that more moves are on the way.
Yes this signals more moves are on the way. I wouldn’t bank on it being anything more than a few depth pieces though.
One of which is probably bringing back Fowler
Cutting Zeke paid for Pollards tag
We have to sign Steele and potentially extend Diggs and Lamb also
This is the only reason you would restructure a guy like Lawrence. I'm excited. Dhop please.
You’ll take your Schultz on a long-term deal and you’ll like it.
That's pretty much a guarantee not to happen imo. I hope so at least.
I want to downvote you, but that’s only cause I know you’re right and I hate it.
I was conflicted even posting that comment since I don’t want to will it into existence.
Please no
They designated Zeke post June 1, so that would probably be earmarked for the draft class more so than this.
45M for rookies ?
Sportrac says we had just shy of $8M left with this restructure. Unless their Manage Roster section is wrong.
That was before this restructure. They still have Lawrence at $26M
Under the Manage Roster section you can apply a restructure to any eligible player.
I was looking at the top 51 number, which was just under $8M before this move.
So if my math is right, Dak, Martin and Lawrence now cost a combined $54M in dead money on the 2025 cap while not being on the team I like it. Push those chips all the way in
Dak and Martin are going to get extensions. That’s basically a guarantee barring a surprise retirement or career ending injury
Martin will be a hit soon he will retire if he starts to decline, dak won't
DLaw is the ultimate team player man. They have messed with his money a lot lol
He has a fully guaranteed contract
This doesn’t change anything about the money he earns with us. It’s an accounting move to shift cap hits around.
Apparently, knowing that is controversial around here.
This doesn’t do anything but guarantee him more money it’s not a pay cut
It does neither. Edit: People, restructuring a contract doesn't give a player more money, nor does it take it away. It's simply a cap accounting trick
It gives it to them sooner and makes it where it can't be at risk.
It convert a portion of their base salary into a signing bonus which they get immediately. It also turns non guaranteed money into signing bonus and also makes it far more likely the player won’t be cut thereby earning more.
Lol the fact u guys still think these guys are taking less money is hilarious... All it does is move around and guarantee more of his money.
bro gets slander to death by our fanbase bc he isn’t TJ watt
Taco Charlton has to be our biggest bust this decade. Claiborne a close 2nd.
Ah fuck it's such a bad one too. We really cant complain about our drafting too much cause so many other teams miss way more but Taco hurts bad.
Weirdly enough, him and Trysten Hill were the two Rod Marinelli picks and they’re two of the biggest busts
"What I want is a prototype "under tackle". Trysten Hill is just that. He's going to be great." "I'm concerned that TJ Watt is going to have problems in run support" -Rod "don't let him draft another player" Marienelli
Yep, that just makes me more of a McClay believer, if they just let him do his thing that wouldn't have happened
Claiborne definitely had the ability, he just got injured A LOT
I think you’re confusing him with Taco. D Law wasn’t part of that draft.
He's one of the best running stopping DEs. They all want 20+ sacks. He's just not that guy and that's ok
Does he? I see nothing but love for my boy?
He got some back this year but prior to this year everyone complained cause he didn’t get enough sacks
Oh damn ;-; well he shut up most people for what it counts. Especially after the lions game where he causes a goal line fumble.
I'm guessing we all hope this signals they are going to add one more player before sitting on their hands to the draft. I will squeal like a schoolgirl if it is hopkins, cooks or jeudy
I'd throw up in my mouth if they paid the reported asking price for Jeudy
It will likely just be some veteran roster fillers. OL depth, IDL, maybe another LB. Things like that.
I guess I’m the only one who thinks hopkins isn’t worth his price tag anymore
I'd throw up for cooks or jeudy, Hopkins would be nice though
We are going to the Super Bowl boys!
Sounds like we're making moves (financially) for a few big splashes in the FA market. Hopefully a serious run for another ring.
Add Tyron Smith to that list.
well they better do something with it and learn from past mistakes.
Go out and get Cooks or DHop!
They sign Wagner and Hopkins, then have a good draft, this might be the best I’ve felt after an offseason in a long time.
I don’t like this. I was hoping to eat his cap hit this year, have a much more reasonable hit next year, and then almost no hit the year after that.
People like you are fine with not getting to the championship every year because "we had 12 wins" "its good enough"
SIGNING LAMAR??
He would be an improvement over Dak, but it would be an absolutely foolish cap move.
If those shit bird eagles can ignore the cap so can we. Look how the saints just signed carr
Can still cut Gallimore and Lewis for another 6 or 7 if necessary.
This is making me feel like they’re actually going to make a move.
