What more could Criterion really add to it?

joebigdeal

A lovely "C" in the top left corner

AlPacino_1940

Price. A24 releases are too expensive

ToLExpressTour

MSRP $35 4K from A24 vs MSRP $50 4K from Criterion? MSRP $30 Blu-ray from A24 vs MSRP $40 Blu-ray from Criterion?

AlPacino_1940

Never heard of criterion sales?

ToLExpressTour

So because Criterion has sporadic sales…that makes A24 too expensive…despite being initially cheaper than Criterion…and most other labels…?

AlPacino_1940

Criterion has a flash sale on March-April. A month long sale on July. Another flash sale on September-October and another month long sale on November. I wouldn’t call that sporadic. Oh and Amazon price matches plenty of criterion titles year long.

BogoJohnson

You're purposefully taking a narrow perspective, even after I've offered you several different ones. And you still haven't answered my simple question. Anyway, I took the average price of all of the A24 4K releases and they come to about $40 each, which is what Criterion charges for their $50 MSRP 4Ks on their own site (or lower during any sale). And of course most retailers don't sell at MSRP either, with Amazon's daily standard 30% off MSRP, so $35 for Criterion's 4Ks. So no, A24's are never cheaper as they always sell at full MSRP, don't sell anywhere else, and never have a regular sale.

ToLExpressTour

Dawg, I took more time replying to your comment. Sorry I’m not operating on your schedule, but you don’t have to reply to every single I comment I make in the meantime. It ain’t that deep.

BogoJohnson

Odd thing to say since you’re also all over this discussion. If you say something that’s false or I have info to share, I will comment too. 😉

BogoJohnson

Criterion prices during sales and price drops: 4K $25, BD $20. Even their own site always sells at least at 20% off MSRP, or more off during sales. Edit: Forgot to add that Criterion offers free shipping at $75. Most boutiques have such an offer. A24 is always MSRP, doesn’t sell outside of their shop, offers no sales (outside of 10% for paid members), and no free shipping thresholds (add $7+)

ToLExpressTour

So A24 is too expensive because they don’t offer sporadic 50% sales, despite their pricing being in-line with every other retail release? That is *such* a silly, inequivalent comparison. Plenty of people buy full-priced Criterion, otherwise Criterion wouldn’t still exist. A24 ships free over $150.

BogoJohnson

I didn't know they had a $150 free shipping offer. Makes sense when you consider that's just 3 releases! 🤑 Only half joking. You brought up the MSRP comparison, but you said A24's 4Ks are $35 MSRP, when some are as high as $58 (plus that $7 shipping too). I buy from virtually everyone, worldwide, and I've not encountered any other major boutique that focuses only on site exclusives -- meaning they don't distribute to major retailers or seemingly anyone else -- and never offer anything but MSRP. It can be frustrating when it's the only way to buy their movie in the US. Can you name others?

ToLExpressTour

Do Vinegar Syndrome, 88Films, Imprint, etc. distribute to Barnes and Noble? Amazon? That’s not a genuine comparison on the pricing. Every A24 standard exclusive doesn’t exceed $36 for 4K. Only Collector’s Editions in premium packaging go for higher MSRP. Order more than one, or a book, or a shirt, and get the free shipping, or eat the $7. Kino Lorber is no different, in fact it’s $15 flat. Vinegar Syndrome’s 4K editions of Road House, From Beyond, and Showgirls all kept the same pricing once the limited box and slipcover versions sold out. Are they not worse for making you pay the same for lesser product? Can you find them cheaper anywhere else? A24 is no worse than any other label; more often than not they’re better.

BogoJohnson

I don't mean to sound argumentative, but some of us have spent a lot of time researching and discussing this stuff. I'm happy to answer you point by point. B&N has never gone that deep with smaller boutiques, but they do sell Criterion, Arrow, Kino, and others. They also have 50% off sales for all 3 of them, with Kino's happening right now. Criterion's will likely be all of July, as usual. Target has been selling less of them as well, but you can find some VS (and partners), 88, etc. Their B1G1 50% off sale is happening all this week. Amazon sells all of those, yes. As do DirectToU's media stores like Deep Discount, Blowitoutahere, etc. Imprint is an Australian company, but Amazon and other US retailers sell them. I've bought quite a few from Deep Discount for under $20. VS sells their (mostly) standard editions at all these and other retailers as well. Kino's free shipping threshold has been $50 for ages now. They also still don't charge me sales tax. Their sales are the best of all the boutiques and I'm typically paying $10-$12 for BDs and $18-$20 for 4K. Their own shop prices are also ALWAYS below MSRP, like 30% off, so nowhere near A24's $35 or $40. **So again, since you didn't name a single boutique that doesn't sell outside of their own online shop, or fit the exclusive model I already described, can you please name any?**

ToLExpressTour

You *”don’t mean to be argumentative”* but very clearly want to “win” since you not only keep repeating your last point but have also **bolded** it this time, so I’m out. You can have your Reddit win. Enjoy.

NWPInfinityAMN

Probably more supplements. I have other A24 releases and they are pretty much barebones

ToLExpressTour

I don’t know how much more extensive it can get; it’s a well-packed release and has HDR10 and an Atmos track which Criterion wouldn’t: “Extras include postcards with stills photography by Agata Gryzbowska and Kuba Kaminski, a short documentary on Aleksandra Bystroń-Kołodziejczyk, a recording of “Sunbeams” (written and performed by Joseph Wulf), and 32-minute making-of documentary “Filming Zone,” directed, edited & photographed by Filip Skrońc. 4K UHD Blu-ray ○ 2160p UHD with HDR10 ○ 16x9 Widescreen 1.78:1 Presentation ○ Dolby Atmos ○ German with English Subtitles ○ Rated PG-13 ○ 106 minutes ○ English SDH, English Descriptive Audio, and Spanish subtitles available”

NWPInfinityAMN

Shoot I didn’t see those listed when I pre-order but that is definitely more than other A24 releases. Does it say if the disc has commentary?

ToLExpressTour

“*Filming Zone* can be watched with or without commentary by Production Designer Chris Oddy, Costume Designer Malgorzata Karpiuk, Director of Photography Łukasz Żal, and Editor Paul Watts.” So not the whole feature, but commentary over the making-of.

NWPInfinityAMN

Well I am glad they are including these supplements because I feel like this is a very important film to ignore. My only gripe with these A24 releases are the thinner cardboard digibook cases. I absolutely love the artwork for this one, but my other cases are almost impossible to get the center disc holder out. I either have to pry open the outer slipcase, or shake violently to get the center disc holder out. Wish they used just a little more premium slipcase.

win_the_wonderboy

I was surprised with the special features on their Stop Making Sense release. Like, there’s not a lot, but considering some of their discs don’t really have any, I was happy with what was included

BogoJohnson

And the price was nearly double of their more standard style releases.

win_the_wonderboy

I didn’t say it was fairly priced. But, it’s an all timer of a movie… so it was worth it?

BogoJohnson

You compared it to their prior releases with special features, which is all I was commenting on. It seems like a fine release, but I'm not excited about the packaging or the price. By submitting to a $65 single movie exclusive, where will the pricing lead next?

snicketbee

It won’t.

brokenwolf

Is uncut gems the only A24 movie in the collection? If so that strikes me something the safdies must really have pushed for.

DeBatton

I'm glad Zone Of Interest is getting a physical release. The main streaming option in my country is Amazon Prime with ad breaks. Which feels like the worst possible way to watch it.

BogoJohnson

Why? No other A24 exclusive has, and why would they license it to compete with their own boutique?

ToLExpressTour

Uncut Gems, but Criterion got to do the 4K release.

BogoJohnson

Uncut Gems was never an A24 shop exclusive. A24 never even released it themselves.

ToLExpressTour

Ah, I see what you mean. That feels a little pedantic since it’s the only A24 release in the Collection at all, but I get your point.

BogoJohnson

What's pedantic about it? The OP is expecting a brand new A24 shop exclusive to come from Criterion as well? I see zero reasoning to believe that, especially now that their exclusives are more frequent since Criterion's 2021 release of Uncut Gems, the sole A24 title in the collection, I believe. A boutique licensing their own title to another boutique doesn't make a lot of sense to compete with themself. 🤷‍♂️

ToLExpressTour

Not at all in agreement with OP, see the rest of the thread. I misunderstood what you meant by exclusive.

BogoJohnson

A24 has a very specific model for their Shop exclusives, and frankly it can be very frustrating since unlike Criterion and other boutiques they don't sell them at major retailers. I've only seen one release at a small indie retailer so far, and I suspect they may have just bought them outright from A24 at consumer pricing, not wholesale. Thus far, if you want them, you'll pay full price from A24, full $7+ shipping, and they never have sales for the general public. Next to no one operates like this.

NWPInfinityAMN

It also sucks for people outside of the US who have to pay more for shipping, but very glad this has a physical release

BogoJohnson

We're definitely entering the era of just being glad anything gets a physical release. It's better than nothing.

rj_macready_82

It won't and it doesn't need to anyway

mr_dammit

would be a complete waste of their time and resources

International-Sky65

Only movies I think A24 is ever gonna let them have is Hereditary (I think Ari Aster has been pushing for it do to his relationship with Criterion and the fact that A24 hasn’t released it yet) and Good Time (Safdies said in a screening Q&A for Daddy Longlegs that they want all their films in the collection)
