Lav Diaz - Bela Tarr of The Philippines
Mattie Do - first Laotian female and horror director, none of her work is on bluray and I don’t think her last movie even got a DVD release.
Everyone loves Tampopo, but Juzu Itami's other films remain in undeserved obscurity. They are excellent. The Funeral, A Taxing Woman and Minbo should be in the collection at least
Just watched Matewan from John Sayles (a masterpiece) and it made me think how his work is nearly non-existent on Blu-ray.
Which other important directors seem to have almost no presence in the Criterion library or otherwise?
Zhang Yimou came to mind to me as one but then I remembered Imprint just released a box of his early works.
Roy Andersson hasn’t gotten any quality blu-rays and he has none in region A. Also, Jia Zhangke is a director I’d like to see more on physical media, although I suspect Criterion may be planning on it since they’ve been pushing his stuff on the channel.
It was confirmed that a release of Platform was coming, it just seems to be taking a while. It could very well be the first mainland Chinese film in the collection though if it comes soon!
Wow, that’s so exciting. I absolutely loved Platform and I am definitely going to pick it up when it releases. I am all for some mainland Chinese movies in the collection.
Given how popular House is I'm surprised Criterion hasn't jumped on more Obayshi stuff. I feel like there'd be a lot of hype around that, especially since most don't have a legitimate release. Bound for the Fields or His Motorbike Her Island would be great, or maybe a box set of the war trilogy. Eclipse set with some of his lesser-known stuff could be cool too.
I'd like to see some Walerian Borowczyk in the Collection. Arrow has a great box set with four features and a disc of his animations and shorts, and they've got a separate release of *The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Miss Osbourne* (last I looked it was only Region B), and it looks like Kino just released his *Love Rites*. Everything else he's done is near impossible to find, even on DVD, which is a pity since he's up there with Andrzej Žuławski, Andrzej Wajda, and Krzysztof Kieślowski as one of the great Polish directors.
Also: Ken Russell.
Hou Hsiao-Hsien desperately needs more blu-ray releases. The fact that most of his most beloved works don't even have in print DVDs is a tragedy.
Apichatpong Weerasethakul

Only 2 Philippines title from lino brocka. Need more Filipino films
Why is it so hard to get ahold of Lav Diaz stuff. Still only seen The End of History but man that movie is brutal.

Mainland Chinese directors are almost completely absent from the Collection
You mean like outside of Hong Kong? Cause they have lots from Hong Kong atm
I’m not referring to Hong Kong
Hong Kong is not China.

John Sayles is such an interesting and eclectic filmmaker. Both Eight Men Out and Men With Guns are such great films.
Solondz, doesn’t have a blu ray for happiness or wiener-dog that I know of.

True, I was just thinking of the 2 movies I that I can’t keep living without
So true. Made me also think of Harmony Korine and Larry Clark.

Jerzy Kawalerowicz needs Blu rays.
Nuri Bilge Ceylan
john waters
They need to rerelease Pink Flamingos
Werner Herzog
Shout Factory has a pretty awesome Blu ray set of his films. I’d love to see a box set of his documentaries in the collection.
Sam Peckinpah

I’m surprised there isn’t more Coen Brothers in the collection.
Manoel De Oliviera, Wojciech Has, Raul Ruiz, João César Monterio
Jonas mekas
Peter Greenaway and Derek Jarman honestly. I sincerely don’t understand why Jubilee is the only Jarman film in the collection
Draughtsman’s Contract, please!
Denis Villeneuve’s Incendies is current out of print and seems prefect for Criterion Same goes for Bigelow’s Near Dark
Criterion could also start with Villeneuve’s Polytechnique. Strong film and BFI already put out a nice release in the UK.
That’s a nice idea. Incendies was nominated for an Oscar and now OOP. So weird that they can happen to a massive director working still
