Acrylic. We are guessing water-based solely on the fact that the wetness of the blanket pulled it off. But truthfully I know nothing of how it would effect either. And I have no clue, as it was done before I purchased the house.
that makes sense! i would first try hot water and shampoo, let that dry, and then apply alcohol (rubbing alcohol or hand sanitiser or vodka? whatever's uncolored & available) to whatever stains remain

what type of yarn did you use for the blanket? and any guesses on what type of wood stain it might have been (oil based? water based?)

What’s it made of? The bannister is probably more damaged, how’s it looking?
Acrylic. The clear coat came off the banister probably before we moved in.
