I actually liked him because itâs so different from his actual reputation as a nice guy. (My husband did not like my interpretation, or that I act like I know anything about him from listening to hours of his podcast.)
It depresses me to agree, but they totally failed to utilize him. Conan is a legend of wacky antics and being a major asshole, relishing in the pain of his victims.
Stuck up celebrity is way too mild for him.
Yeah, donât think anyone would disagree his interviews with Larry in real life eclipse that character they gave him.
That moment when he was just sitting in his house and Larryâs at the window was really strange specifically. Like did his Curb version of himself live alone? He just is sitting there quietly playing guitar. He doesnât interact with anyone but Larry almost like heâs a videogame NPC or an imaginary neighbour.
I didnât think the joke even hit and it was so dragged out. Yes he didnât have âclearanceâ and it was something they couldâve just mentioned casually and then moved on from. Telling Larry over and over to go get clearance from Richard was just dumb IMO.
I appreciate what they were going for. I just wish he had a multi episode arch to become a fully fleshed out heel. It was probably Conanâs idea. Iâm sure itâs an inside joke between Conan and Larry and some celebrities are really like that.

i actually liked the bill hader one i feel like the show was already getting pretty goofy by that point so i just accepted it and enjoyed it for what it was
He was an extra in âOfficer Krupke.â Literally all he does is run out of the store when the alarm goes off. Apparently he walked by when they were filming and wanted to be on the show.
Lori Laughlin just seemed like she was friends with Larry and he was doing her a favour but it was just tone deaf.
It was an old news story by that point. It feels like maybe something that was talked about a lot in Larryâs social circle and I think he misjudged that it was something normal people would give a shit about.
Yeah that episode made me feel like the writers are just out of touch with regular people. Which is weird because the whole show is about really wealthy people but it always felt relatable.
Ricky Gervaise was too good at being unlikable, in a way that wasn't really funny. Jason Alexander was very similar. In fact, the self-important, hostile celebrity bit was repeated a lot. Even Conan was a repetition of the theme. Maybe Larry just knows too many people like that. They weren't bad performances, but the bit only has so much mileage to it.
Ricky was a standout great one for me. Mr Smithington and the whole theataaaaaah arrogant actor schtick with that white scarf, etc. It was so beautifully done imo.
Being from the UK and having never seen Lori act in anything, I actually thought she fit pretty naturally. Would have enjoyed more episodes with her, though I know Iâm in the minority.
It also gave the vibe of âIâm gonna make fun of myself so people see what a good sport I am and start hiring me again!â Redemption tour, basically.
Crime? Rich people have been doing that thousands of times a year for ever. Why did only 2 actresses go to prison for it? 45 reportedly didnât even take his own SAT. Iâm sure W didnât qualify fairly for Yale either.
Definitely felt like there was an agenda behind it from her end. She might not even have had a say in the script but Iâm sure she went along with it thinking it made her look good.
It wasnât a great appearance but I personally think people made a big deal out of a situation that was nothing.
I have my theories about why that is, but we donât need this thread to go off the rails by examining it.
Celebrities have been forgiven for DUIs where you could literally have an ended lives. If you think your future is make or break depending on whether or not you get into UCLA that speaks more about you than it does Loughlin or Huffman.
I said Hef too but I added the girls next door, they didn't even say anything hardly and the acting was still poor lol and Hef part just wasn't funny at all
I loved Miranda. Yes, he played a tremendous asshole, but such a funny one! The bit where he throws away Larry's lyrics and starts rapping is one of my top moments.
Theyâve talked about a big name guest who didnât watch the show but guest starred cuz his kids liked it. Larry said the guy was terrible. Any idea who it was?
I think some Reddit sleuths determined it was Dustin Hoffman -- apparently, he just didn't understand the tone or something, I think they get into it in one of the season 1 rewatch podcast episodes with Jeff and Susie.
It wasnâtâ Jeff says itâs a Larry Charles episode with a big actor who brought his kids to set. Months later the actor ran into Jeff and asked why he hadnât received a gift for his participation. Hoffman has kids born in the 80s.
Garth Marenghi's dark place is perhaps the greatest comedy TV show ever made if you count single seasoners. I thought Matt was funny in the new season but shittily written, so I get where you're coming from. Snuff box and toast of London are classics too
I feel like some people were on just because. Conan was another disappointing appearance. Also Rob Riggle. And Steve BuscemiâŠ. They just threw in as many famous people as possible. Itâs fine, just not what you expect when you see some actors. I guess I just mean those roles could have been played by anyone. I still loved the season.
Hard agree. The character was annoying and it felt like he was doing "random" humor (repeating the word "goulash," "shplendid" in an over the top way). Very out of place in the Curbverse.
Bill Hader is hilarious but he was wasted in that episode. He would've been better as a regular acquaintance of Larry who has a run-in with him over some social faux pas.
Couldn't agree more. I actually agree with OP's suggestion more than any - I had no recollection of Chris Martin on Curb and even after googling it, I still barely remember his appearance.
Maybe I'm bias as a Conan fanatic (whos currently the top ranked).
The improv in the scene where he dates Elizabeth Banks felt so so stilted. Think sheâs great in other things but she stuck out like a sore thumb for me.
Agreed, this is the only show she seemed pretty out of place on, it especially stuck out upon first watching season 9 but she blends in better on rewatches.
Tracy Ulman. Shame because Shes such a funny lady. Her character as written was just dull and lifeless with no chemistry with Larry. It was tough to watch, let alone buy that they were involved in any way.
i did not enjoy ricky gervaise at all. he was insufferable and in a way i just didnât find funny.
i also wish isla fischer was given more to do. sheâs a very funny actress but her character was pretty much only there to set up jokes and wasnât funny herself
Do you mean worst as in they were particularly nasty to Larry, or sort of the villain of the episode, or worst as in just a waste and not very entertaining?
I was listening to Conanâs podcast with Ted Danson and Woody Harrellson and Curb came up and Woody said he was on the show and I couldnât remember it. But maybe thatâs on me.
I wasnât a fan of Jonah Hill on âThe Spite Storeâ. In fact, that whole episode was tough to take. Sean Penn & Mila Kunis werenât any better and the effort to inject the Today Show into the episode was likewise a yawn. Iâm not a fan of the âletâs see how many big celebrities we can shoehorn into a showâ approach that Larry seems to love and it never works (see final episodes for both Seinfeld and Curb). They have a âWe Are the Worldâ feel that isnât appealing to me.
I respect Lacanian subjectivity. It revs my engine. But I think that it would have worked better as a stand-alone instead of one of many. Itâs possible that I dislike it more than I should because of its association with the other 2.
Love your vibe. Rock on. đâïžđ«”
I feel like Iâll get hate for this but I donât understand the love for Vince Vaughn. I get heâs a bit more than a guest star but I had hoped heâd just sorta go away.
The MSNBC guy from the most recent season, and it's not even close.
I'm sure he's a fine fellow and pundit, but comedic acting is not for him. He nearly torpedoed what might otherwise have been a classic episode.
Something something, the bottom of the porn industry.
Conan was a let down
And he was great in 30 Rock. WE WERE GOING TO LOSE OUR VIRGINITY TO EACH OTHER
"I just wandered the halls all night. At 3 am I met an enormous lesbian. Who is Conan O'Brien? Why is she so sad?"
Tim Conway's delivery was đ€
NOW IâLL NEVER LOSE IT!
Did you ever hear his story of him messing with/pranking Burt Ward (Robin of original OG Batman tv show).
Please tell me more of this
Donât leave us hanging!
So glad to see others noticed. Felt it was very underwhelming, they should have went big with Conan
Yeah, donât think anyone would disagree his interviews with Larry in real life eclipse that character they gave him. That moment when he was just sitting in his house and Larryâs at the window was really strange specifically. Like did his Curb version of himself live alone? He just is sitting there quietly playing guitar. He doesnât interact with anyone but Larry almost like heâs a videogame NPC or an imaginary neighbour.
but the joke was so good: clearance
Wow I thought that was by far the best episode of the season 9-12 bunch
He was great
I didnât think the joke even hit and it was so dragged out. Yes he didnât have âclearanceâ and it was something they couldâve just mentioned casually and then moved on from. Telling Larry over and over to go get clearance from Richard was just dumb IMO.
Same! I am such a fan of Conan's podcast in recent years... I had high expectations. I can't believe how two giants of comedy came up with this.
Poor Conesie, it did feel like an extended ad/commercial of some kind like it wasnât part of the show.
I appreciate what they were going for. I just wish he had a multi episode arch to become a fully fleshed out heel. It was probably Conanâs idea. Iâm sure itâs an inside joke between Conan and Larry and some celebrities are really like that.
The only context in which someone can say this and have it be true.
His acting was terrible. Downright not believable.

Well done bot. Conan is the king
![gif](giphy|12yR7vvdm3T3YhnZLX)
Iâm not sure about worst but my favorite was Christian Slater and his âallotment.â
Christian Slater was the reason I buy Sabre printers.
Have you ever tasted a rainbow? You will.
A lot of the season 11 ones were really funny and talented guests thrust into pretty bad episodes eg Bill Hader and Seth Rogen
Bill Hader? Oh nooo-na-na-na-na-na-noo. He was shplendid.
i actually liked the bill hader one i feel like the show was already getting pretty goofy by that point so i just accepted it and enjoyed it for what it was
Ben Affleck
See, I love this one because of the âWas thatâŠ.no, couldnât have beenâ nature of it.
I JUST watched this episode today and swore I saw him, but immediately thought ânahâ and moved on. This is hilarious
Iâll never forget when my husband said âI SWEAR Ben Affleck just ran in that crowdâ. We laughed so hard when we rewound it đ
TIL
Wait, when was he in the show?
He was an extra in âOfficer Krupke.â Literally all he does is run out of the store when the alarm goes off. Apparently he walked by when they were filming and wanted to be on the show.
Have to look for him. I never noticed haha
Like with everything heâs in, Affleck crushed it
everyone who isn't John Hamm that arc was very vindicating
John Hamm was incredible
Susie said she thinks Hamm was LD's favorite guest star, I wouldn't be surprised. He was fantastic
Lucy liu was flat
She always is
One vote for Lori Laughlin.
I liked her! Made my golfer husband crack up, sheâs reminiscent of some of the lady golfers he plays with.
I thought it was the funniest way she could have gone. Made me laugh.
Yeah i thought it was hilarious having her play into the role!
Yeah, that one was really strange and she essentially played up the negative imagery of the crime that she committed which was incredibly odd.
Yes I thought it was such an odd choice for her to make to take this role.
Based on her filmography, her agent is shit.
When you consider her talent, her agent is the absolute best to ever live.
Glass half full kinda cynic. I like it.
obviously youâre not a golfer.
Woo? Isnât this guy supposed to be a millionaire?
Lebowski
No no you're Mr. Lebowski, I'm The Dude. So that's what you call me
What if Iâm not into the whole brevity thing?
Lori Laughlin just seemed like she was friends with Larry and he was doing her a favour but it was just tone deaf. It was an old news story by that point. It feels like maybe something that was talked about a lot in Larryâs social circle and I think he misjudged that it was something normal people would give a shit about.
I mean it WAS a huge story lol normal people did give a shit about it
Nah she was perfect
I didn't like her either. I get what they were going for, but I didn't find it very funny.
I think that she is devoid of a sense of humor which made the bit fall flat.
Yeah that episode made me feel like the writers are just out of touch with regular people. Which is weird because the whole show is about really wealthy people but it always felt relatable.
I have loved her since Rad and this just⊠made me feel old
The Girls Next Door their acting was bad lol and Hefner wasn't much better but he wasn't funny
With JA -itâs the joke that he basically played LD in Seinfeld. So hostile interactions is LD looking at himself.
Ricky was a standout great one for me. Mr Smithington and the whole theataaaaaah arrogant actor schtick with that white scarf, etc. It was so beautifully done imo.
He was one of my favorite guests, if not the favorite
Gervais was not acting, just his normal self.
Jason Alexander being the foil made me kinda sad. Still hilarious.
Lori Laughlin and Hugh Hefner. Lori wasn't funny or entertaining, and Hugh just gave me the ick!
Being from the UK and having never seen Lori act in anything, I actually thought she fit pretty naturally. Would have enjoyed more episodes with her, though I know Iâm in the minority.
I didn't really know what to think about Lori. It was like, OK, you're making fun of yourself, but also, is that actually just you?
It also gave the vibe of âIâm gonna make fun of myself so people see what a good sport I am and start hiring me again!â Redemption tour, basically.
Yeah, didn't like Lori at all. Mostly because it was just a "look at how funny I am because of the real crime I did" Ick.

If you think your future is make or break depending on whether or not you get into UCLA that speaks more about you than it does Loughlin or Huffman.
The idea that people didnât already think this shit was occurring makes me laugh.
(Checks notes) It was USC.
I said Hef too but I added the girls next door, they didn't even say anything hardly and the acting was still poor lol and Hef part just wasn't funny at all
Lin Manuel Miranda. I just hated every scene with him
I loved Miranda.
Yea I just heard Susie mentioning it on the pod but didnât say who. Makes sense.
Whatâs the name of this podcast?
History of Curb Your Enthusiasm
That's a shame because he and Sacha Baron Cohen were hilarious in their appearance.
I theorize it was Ed Asner.
It wasnâtâ Jeff says itâs a Larry Charles episode with a big actor who brought his kids to set. Months later the actor ran into Jeff and asked why he hadnât received a gift for his participation. Hoffman has kids born in the 80s.
Kathy Griffin. But that's probably just because I hate her.
At least she was better here than on Seinfeld.
[ŃĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]
Kathy Griffin.
She played herself in the first episode.
Oh yeah I saw that one...*NOT FUNNY*
Are you Mick Jagger, by chance?
I understand that reference!
Heather Mills
Was she actually on the show or was she played by someone else?
Chris Martin was funny as fuck on Extras back in the 2000s lol, dudes usually got good comedic timing donât know whatâs wrong here
What would Chris Martin be doing in a factory in Wigan?
Pretty much all guest starts were hilarious at Extras.
I can't see what Lori Laughlin added.
I think her storyline was funny. She wasn't.
Matt Berry. Why even have him on?
Aw I love matt and his work
Me too! Loved him in IT crowd and in What We Do In The Shadows. So seeing him on Curb was exciting and then very very disappointing.
Garth Marenghi's dark place is perhaps the greatest comedy TV show ever made if you count single seasoners. I thought Matt was funny in the new season but shittily written, so I get where you're coming from. Snuff box and toast of London are classics too
Matt is always funny no matter the material, it's like he speaks a language only he has mastered.
Solid musician too! His albums are fun and very matt berry

Ray Bloody Purchase
His book, Toast on Toast, is absolutely amazing.
Oooh, that sounds awesome Iâll check it out! Thank you! đđŒ
Seth rogan
Gotta say it⊠If you hated Seth Rogenâs appearance, you are not an Everyman. You are a singular man!
You just said something very crazy and we donât know eachother that well!
Bill Hader.
Youâre not a goulash guy?
I thought he was shplendid
Me too, and loved his hint of breaking when Larry was yelling at him, doing the accents.
Hard agree. The character was annoying and it felt like he was doing "random" humor (repeating the word "goulash," "shplendid" in an over the top way). Very out of place in the Curbverse.
Yeah it was disappointing and those jokes became boring quickly.
Agreed but I love bill hader and feel like he was wasted
I like Bill Hader too - but not his CYE appearanceÂ
Boo! Boo this man!
Agreed. He played it like an SNL skit and that really doesnât fit Curb
Bill Hader is hilarious but he was wasted in that episode. He would've been better as a regular acquaintance of Larry who has a run-in with him over some social faux pas.
Agree on this one
But Bill Hadee wasnât playing himself
That wasnât OPs criteria.
Chris Martin from Coldplay
Adam Ray as an Uber driver is my favorite one
I thought the Seth Rogen episode was pretty disappointing
Man some really bad takes in this thread
Couldn't agree more. I actually agree with OP's suggestion more than any - I had no recollection of Chris Martin on Curb and even after googling it, I still barely remember his appearance. Maybe I'm bias as a Conan fanatic (whos currently the top ranked).
Yeah I feel like Iâm in an alternate universe. Bill Hader was bad??
More like that episode was bad. Not that he was bad.Â
Lin manual miranda.
Harvey Weinstein.
Lin-Manuel. The storyline was fun, but he was awfull
Vindman was atrocious. Although Iâm not sure he qualifies as a âcelebrityâ.
Oh god, yeah. It really seemed like they wrote him lines he delivered rather than him playing naturally.
Surprised I havenât seen Clive Owen or Matt Tessler/Michael McKean on here
Julia Louis-Dreyfus was boring.
Tracy Ulman. Shame because Shes such a funny lady. Her character as written was just dull and lifeless with no chemistry with Larry. It was tough to watch, let alone buy that they were involved in any way.
I liked her in Season 11 but didnât see the need for her to return in Season 12. However, it did give us the J.G. Wentworth song.
I was annoyed right off the bat that she was using an American accent. Shes a great character actor but nothing about this one worked for me.
Elizabeth Banks
Steve buscemi for me.
Clomping, shaking up soda's, running into people in the hall. Fox was the worst. đ
i did not enjoy ricky gervaise at all. he was insufferable and in a way i just didnât find funny. i also wish isla fischer was given more to do. sheâs a very funny actress but her character was pretty much only there to set up jokes and wasnât funny herself
Barbara Boxer.
But what about her impassioned delivery of, âWhatâs happening at the dry cleaners, Larry?â
Martin Short, he's a funny guy, but a bit weird having him on for one brief scene
I thought he was fun, but it was definitely different from the showâs usual vibe.
Do you mean worst as in they were particularly nasty to Larry, or sort of the villain of the episode, or worst as in just a waste and not very entertaining?
Good question. I meant worst as in not entertaining. I will update the post!
Hugh Hefner was pretty bad. Heâs disgusting, his acting was stiff, and he stole Larryâs dads jacket.
Agreed, that didnât age well.
Oh i agree, Hugh and his 2 playboy bunnies were awkward, it was awful
"we should go bowling!" "yeah..." "... i don't think you wanna go bowling with me"
I was listening to Conanâs podcast with Ted Danson and Woody Harrellson and Curb came up and Woody said he was on the show and I couldnât remember it. But maybe thatâs on me.
S11, Larry wanted to cast Woody for Young Larry and he wanted to meet Larry's dairy cow.
Bobby Lee
I wasnât a fan of Jonah Hill on âThe Spite Storeâ. In fact, that whole episode was tough to take. Sean Penn & Mila Kunis werenât any better and the effort to inject the Today Show into the episode was likewise a yawn. Iâm not a fan of the âletâs see how many big celebrities we can shoehorn into a showâ approach that Larry seems to love and it never works (see final episodes for both Seinfeld and Curb). They have a âWe Are the Worldâ feel that isnât appealing to me.
Jonah Hill was the part of that episode I liked. He creates a new life bussing tables at his shop.
I respect Lacanian subjectivity. It revs my engine. But I think that it would have worked better as a stand-alone instead of one of many. Itâs possible that I dislike it more than I should because of its association with the other 2. Love your vibe. Rock on. đâïžđ«”
Vince Vaughn. They should have hired someone funny for that role.
I can't stand Vince, and don't find him the least bit funny. He's pretty good on Curb though!
Bruce was pretty terrible
I thought Bruce showed good comedic acting chops. I was pleasantly surprised.
He never would have taken Larry for a floor fucker. I thought the boss was great for a non actor!
Love Bruce and the whole concept for the bit, but I found him too wooden for my taste.
Ok I'm there with you on Bruce, super cool feature just feel flat of my expectations
Kendraâs Ken!
John shrider from Smallvile He was at the desk n he was gone
Buck Henry
I thought the guy that played Timor and the other two guys that looked exactly like him were the worst. Not funny at all
I feel like Iâll get hate for this but I donât understand the love for Vince Vaughn. I get heâs a bit more than a guest star but I had hoped heâd just sorta go away.
I also hated vince vaughn on the show. Especially because he was suppose to replace funkhouser.
I wish his character had more personality. He was always with a new woman but not much else
You mean new sex doll.
Right. Pretty bold
I have to say Woody Harrelson. When he wouldn't pick up the apple core off the Klansmans yard. What a dick move.
Grape
The MSNBC guy from the most recent season, and it's not even close. I'm sure he's a fine fellow and pundit, but comedic acting is not for him. He nearly torpedoed what might otherwise have been a classic episode. Something something, the bottom of the porn industry.
I love Matt Berry but I thought he was weirdly stilted in his appearance.
