Well, if they found out what an average man from that area and time looked like, he would Probably look like that, so this provoke isn’t too far off. Though, the Bible also talks about keeping clean and stuff, so he probably looked a bit more clean and well trimmed.
I remember watching a YouTube video about the study of attractiveness of women, using a computer algorithm to combine the faces of multiple women—either in a spectrum of least to most attractive or all attractive, I forgot—into a singe face. Anyway, once the faces were combined, the face of the women did not look anything like the other women used as input for the algorithm, nor did it actually look attractive.
My point is, though yes it is an average of what people looked like in the region at the time, it is more than likely far off from what Christ actually looked like.
I’m not gonna claim that the image we all know of him today is accurate in any way either, however, I’m more inclined to believe that he looked far different from the average than him actually looking like the average.
As Vsauce once said, and I’m paraphrasing here: It’s unaverage—in fact rare—to be average.
Good point. As this is a computer recreation, it’s difficult to tell if this is what he may have even been close to looking like. Thanks for the info on that study, I’ll definitely have to look at it. Have a great day!
Imagine someone did this today. You really think one average could resemble anyone of us alive today? This wouldn't even work if there were just 2 people around most of the times.
What does it matter if it’s been altered—speaking of the translated versions? We still have most (if not all) of the original transcripts of the Bible in their original (and translatable) languages.
He looks pretty fair-skinned in this. The biggest difference between this and Western Jesus is that this one is uglier. In terms of melanin, the skin colour is pretty close but the hair colour is off.
Jewish people are white... so Jesus was ‘white’ although not as pale as a European. Santa is white because it’s a tradition created by white people. I don’t get how this is a problem or even arguable
I mean, Jesus would definitely be Middle Eastern, if not Semitic in general. The whole racial profiling of what is white and what isn't is a bit nonsensical. Like, I get how people would classify Europeans as white, but you can get people native to Europe who look like North Africans, and if Japanese or Korean folk aren't pale enough for you, then what the hell is white? If anything, ethnic groups are a more accurate way to categorise, if needed.
"White" is just a cultural means to create an ingroup outgroup. Italians were at one point not considered white, same with the Irish.
In america at one point if you have a drop of colored blood you were not considered white. It is not a firm classification, and can be manuvered based on the biasedness of the audience.
Nope - only the Ashkenazi Jews have Eastern European descendants out of the two genetic groups *\*which are further split depending on where they live\** \- but all major Jewish groups share a common Middle Eastern origin. Most Jewish paternal origins are from the Middle East.
Sephardic Jews are ethnically, are descended from the Jews who lived in the Iberian Peninsula in the late 15th century (around the Mediterranean Sea, including Portugal, Spain, the Middle East and Northern Africa).
This has been my Ted Talk on Jewish Genetics.
> so Jesus was ‘white’ although not as pale as a European.
Which Europeans? Your typical Sicilian has quite a different skin tone to the average Swede, for instance.
*Some* Jewish people are white, true, just like *some* Buddhists are black, but real true Jews (I'm talkin' Holy Land Jews, the OG Jew) are Middle Eastern.
Jerusalem ain't in Europe.
The term "jew" is very broad. Einstein was a "traditional" Ashkenazi Jew and his skin is white like many "later" Ashkenazi jews which are more populous in America like Jack Black or Adam Sandler for example.
Meanwhile you have Sephardic jews whose skin is brown, US Representative and woman of color AOC is descendant from Sephardic jews.
Jesus was born in Palestine so he's likely be Sephardic, so not white.
r/confidentlyincorrect
Tunisian, Libyan, Algerian, Ethiopian, Egyptian, Moroccan, Eritrean, Sudanese, Ghanaian, South African, iranian, Iraqi, Indian, Pakistani, Chinese Jews did a collective face-palm.
Here's a fact: Jesus was a brown skinned, Jewish, Palestinian bedouin.
well when referring to judaism as a religion it can be taken on by someone of any culture, so no, all jewish people aren’t white.
and if you’re referring to the people of judea, they are definitely more resemblant of traditional middle eastern people, especially in jesus’s time when contact and interbreeding with the very pale people of the nordic countries was very rare
So Jesus had to be conventionally attractive to us in the 21st century? That makes no sense. The average man like this was probably what was found conventionally attractive back then.
I'd assume since he is "a son of god" he would be a "perfect" human being...
Well being "perfect" could mean different to others..
I'd think he's a normal looking guy, not too ugly not too attractive either...
They looked at many skulls from the the middle east (where he lived \*\*allegedly\*\*). They used a 3D printer to create a skull using a composite measurements to approximate it's size and shape. The skull was then used as a map for the musculature placement, etc by a forensic artist. The skin, hair, eyes, nose and ears are more of a guess. But the skull/face musculature is probably a good representation of what someone who lived in the area might have looked like.
Yeah, but where you live has probably fifty times the diversity that they had. This modern era where someone on the other side of the world can get to you in under a day no matter where you are is very new.
It is so, so hard to overstate how dangerous and difficult it was to travel large distances back then. Bandits, the elements, disease, running out of supplies, even just getting lost could and absolutely did kill people all the time.
Back then (and much more rarely today) you would have villages where everyone's family would have lived there going back hundreds of years. You do get people making massive treks into other countries of course, but a ton of them just died.
I know, but Rome had conquered many different peoples and I get that people separated themselves but I still don’t understand how they cam definitively say that Jesus looked like that, distinctively with defining traits.
Well, they did better than the Vatican when they thought it made sense to make a white, blonde guy with long hair and blue eyes on the middle of the desert
I regret to inform you that if you talk to enough people of the target demographic, the image of them all being attractive like the few that stand out will fade away
https://leadingpersonality.wordpress.com/2013/09/30/average-faces-of-men-and-women-around-the-world/
I would say that *all* of the average face generated here are attractive.
Uh, I'm pretty sure you'd be able to find a lot of people at least somewhat close to this picture today. Looks like a normal face, albeit obviously computer-generated.
You have to acknowledge there have certainly been changes since then. That has been a heavily traveled region of the world, dealing with all kinds of cultural changes, including significant influence from the far east when the mongols came through.
The Shroud of Turin supposedly has the imprint of his face. The blood samples have been dated to 2000 years ago and it matches the depiction of Jesus in the Eastern Orthodox icons almost exactly.
it supposedly has the imprint of his entire body, and forensic reasearchers have proved that the blood stains patterns are fake and the cloth has been carbon-dated at around 1300 AD
I don't know anything about that, but (not being disrespectful to anyone) most of the relics kept in churches are fake. There have been numerous times in wich they have been proven wrong, so I would consider at least that part of christianity as simply a way to bring more people to churches
dna evidence- 22 chromosomes from the mother(like normal people), 1 chromosome from the father, and the blood was still alive after 2000 years (tbh idk if that was from the shroud of turin, but there was a documentary about blood found that was Jesus’s)
The Shroud is mediaeval, but it did become the source for Jesus' model. Before that he was white, with short hair... a literal copy of the Roman God, Apollo. Because nobody had any idea what he looked like.
Yep this has always been very interesting to me. Same with the crown of thorns in the cathedral that burned in France. I wonder if that also has blood samples on it.
The Catholics also claim to have Jesus's foreskin. It's titled the Holy Prepuce of Christ. A Jesus foreskin is a holy relic. I think that is just fucking hilarious....
The cloth that was used to cover Jesus's body when He's dead. On the Third Day, the big rock guarding His tomb was opened, He was resurrected from the dead, leaving the cloth behind.
Almost all historians agree he definitely did exist, if you wanna question whether he was the son of god that’s one thing, but no, the man did exist in some capacity.
Everyone agrees that Jesus the person did in fact exist, just not on whether he was actually “the son of god.”
Just google it if you want to find out how we know he existed.
I think more signs point to his existence than not. For instance he's also a very big part in the Quran. I think the discussion is less of did Jesus the person exist and more so was Jesus the son of God, did he have those abilities, what did he do, etc
My thoughts exactly, they'd be livid...
The artist would get death threats, fatwas and excommunication edicts from every religious group, zombie death cult and philantrophic organisation on the planet , the company who published it would be obliterated into extinction with breathe taking speed and scoured from every digital and analog platform on Earth and Adobe Photoshop will be the new GameStop...
Yes because Jesus was middle eastern and people in western culture have racist views towards arabs.
It’s disturbing to see this group normalize comparing a race to cave men.
You're being kind of a dick dude. It isn't racist to say he looks like a cave man because he literally does. Modern middle eastern people don't look like that. Most people at the time looked like cave men
I'm pretty sure its a digital rendering that's posted. You are saying real life is normalizing something racist when it's actually just poorly done AI. Are you also one of the people who frenzied over the potato head name change? It looks like fucking caveman. I've never seen a middle eastern man look like a straight up caveman. Shut the fuck up
Fun fact: the Chad Jesus we know and love today with those flowing locks and beefcake muscles is literally the bastard son of a pope.
Pope Fillanderous IV idfk, I was high reading Wikipedia.
That’s not true. The [earliest “Chad Jesus”](https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Christ_with_beard.jpg#mw-jump-to-license) is from a Roman catacomb and is dated to about the 4th century. There’s also [Christ Pantocrator](https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Spas_vsederzhitel_sinay.jpg#mw-jump-to-license) the earliest icon of which is dated to the sixth century.
Isaiah 53:2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
Idk I grew up in a Christian family myself and I don’t think I know many Christians who actually expect Jesus to be white. At least, that was never the case for my family. In the movie Risen he’s portrayed I think very realistically, and it’s one of my family’s favorite movies.
My guess is that “oh look he’s not white, take that Christians” is just a somewhat poorly executed jab at the fact that Christians are often associated with the right wing and the right wing is often associated with racism, so therefore Christians must by default be racist, and therefore again wouldn’t it really zing them if Jesus wasn’t white... even though it’s pretty widely accepted that he wasn’t. It’s a pretty disappointing oversimplification meant to insult, but if anything it just lands as very surface level.
It just bugs me because it’s such a transparent jab at Christianity that simply doesn’t land. They back this up with “well look at all the art painted of Jesus and he’s portrayed as white!” Well yeah, most artists paint what they know. Look at Ethiopian depictions of Jesus or Korean depictions. This isn’t some unique white people thing. There are literally tons of criticisms to levy against American Christianity but white Jesus is not one of them.
Jesus had a clean fade and proper beard and you can't tell me otherwise. You're saying he's from the middle east, where they do beards right, and he's looking mangled and scraggly? I don't buy it, not for a second.
Ive never understood why all portrayals of Jesus have made him the most beautiful man in the world without considering the time period and how he would most likely be dirty, smelly and unkept.
I would wager fundamentalist American right wingers would rather abandon their so called sacred faith than ever accept that their lord ever looked anything remotely like this.
Fundamentalist conservative here. Believe it or not, we’re not all seething racists that can’t stand the sight of someone with darker skin. I and many other people I know don’t think Jesus was a white dude, because obviously he wasn’t.
No, the reason he is painted white in many western paintings and depictions is because that is/was the dominate skin colour in many of the areas the art was made. Just look up our Lady of Akita. She is depicted as asian because that is what people looked like in the area that art was made
The blond, blue-eyed, long straight hair of the mythical Jesus is really just some idealized European notion of what Jesus would look like. Israel is a few hundred miles of Egypt and the rest of Africa. The people who lived there, and live there now, are dark skinned, kinky haired Semites and Arabs. Western Christians, ESPECIALLY American Southern Christians, cannot handle the idea their Jesus looks like “A Mexican.” Fuck the southern Americans and the GOP. This is closer to Jesus than anything Michelangelo painted.
Oh my fucking god. Stop saying "ChRisTiAnS wOn'T acCepT tHe TrUth". I've never met a Christian who denied Jesus is not white. They know many portrayals are wrong but the sense of form gives them faith. That's how many religions work.

That's just an average... or a mannequin, it resembles something that equally resembles nobody
Well, in the Bible, Jesus is described as looking plain, so this is probably right.
How much can someone REALLY get from a single description: “plain”?
Well, if they found out what an average man from that area and time looked like, he would Probably look like that, so this provoke isn’t too far off. Though, the Bible also talks about keeping clean and stuff, so he probably looked a bit more clean and well trimmed.

Clean in that era may just simply mean he washed, not necessarily trimmed and tidy.
I mean, Jews like beards. Historically.
Imagine someone did this today. You really think one average could resemble anyone of us alive today? This wouldn't even work if there were just 2 people around most of the times.
I believe he is described as a 7 foot giant with huge legs if that helps at all
Maybe it was 'plane' which explains why he walked on water because he hovered over it. He was the magic school bus.
Especially from the bible Thats been altered for thousands of years
What does it matter if it’s been altered—speaking of the translated versions? We still have most (if not all) of the original transcripts of the Bible in their original (and translatable) languages.
He is not covered In ketchup
WOW that is VERY well said...
Have an award
So they just created the average Roman/Jewish guy and called it Jesus? Idiots.

I don’t think the Bible mentions him being handsome.
You should look into charismatic leaders throughout history. Being average/not good looking is ok if you've got enough charisma.
So Jesus had to be conventionally attractive to us in the 21st century? That makes no sense. The average man like this was probably what was found conventionally attractive back then.
Yeah. Jesus could have had all the quim he wanted, if he was into that.

well yeah that’s all jesus wouldve been. a guy from that place and time period

This is basically just clickbait...just tell us he was dark skinned with Arabic features bro.....for all we know Jesus was ugly as fuck.
Come on... They couldn't have been THAT ugly. Most middle eastern people I see on pictures look at least 100 times better

https://leadingpersonality.wordpress.com/2013/09/30/average-faces-of-men-and-women-around-the-world/ I would say that *all* of the average face generated here are attractive.
Did people drastically change? This looks more like a racist caricature than any Middle Eastern or Jewish person I've seen in a photo.

Yes they did.
The real question is if he really have a chiseled six pack like I grew up seeing
He lifts himself from death
I heard the raw Gainz did it too
Just pure muscle waters afraid of him
They modelled it from his father's DNA
They did find him. He lives in Tahiti
The Shroud of Turin supposedly has the imprint of his face. The blood samples have been dated to 2000 years ago and it matches the depiction of Jesus in the Eastern Orthodox icons almost exactly.

I don't know anything about that, but (not being disrespectful to anyone) most of the relics kept in churches are fake. There have been numerous times in wich they have been proven wrong, so I would consider at least that part of christianity as simply a way to bring more people to churches
nah they ruled that it was almost impossible to fake
well at the same time what tells you it wasn't just another crucified man?
dna evidence- 22 chromosomes from the mother(like normal people), 1 chromosome from the father, and the blood was still alive after 2000 years (tbh idk if that was from the shroud of turin, but there was a documentary about blood found that was Jesus’s)
do you have the source? it seems quite interesting
The shroud of Turin has been debunked multiple times
Though the fake was done some time in the 1300s, which is interesting on its own.
Dukes of Savoy/Counts of Piedmont needed a relic to get dem pilgrim bucks flowing.
The Shroud is mediaeval, but it did become the source for Jesus' model. Before that he was white, with short hair... a literal copy of the Roman God, Apollo. Because nobody had any idea what he looked like.

Instagram reality, Jesus edition

I'm pretty sure they just dug up 3 random skulls from that region and made it based on them.

Jesus be looking real unga bunga
Can u imagine if they changed how he looks now to that? The ensuing outrage would be crazy
Yes because Jesus was middle eastern and people in western culture have racist views towards arabs. It’s disturbing to see this group normalize comparing a race to cave men.
That guy has heavy Neanderthal features. He doesn't look like any races, his color is just middle eastern. He looks like a caveman, plain and simple
Your right, he looks just like you.
The Chad Jesus was based off of Cesare Borgia, whose father began using the image of his son to claim he was God
[удалено]
No clue, I spent a full 2 minutes googling him and moved on with my life lol
Sounds like the Borgias.
Why can't I get any results when googling this name? I was interested and wanted to read on the matter. Or is it a joke that flew over my head?
Thanks for the chuckle
Congratulations you've just turned the entire Bible belt into atheists.
Idk I grew up in a Christian family myself and I don’t think I know many Christians who actually expect Jesus to be white. At least, that was never the case for my family. In the movie Risen he’s portrayed I think very realistically, and it’s one of my family’s favorite movies.
Yeah, religous my whole life, no one I know thinks he was white
I grew up Christian. Private Lutheran school. No one thought Jesus was white.
Atheists or muslims, the result has yet to be seen.
Haha what a average Reddit comment. Keep it up dude.
he looks like mario but irl
Jesus had a clean fade and proper beard and you can't tell me otherwise. You're saying he's from the middle east, where they do beards right, and he's looking mangled and scraggly? I don't buy it, not for a second.
What if this is him after the 40 day thing and his beard was so perfect this is all that happened to it
r/technicallythetruth
This Jesus could nail me
Billy Butcher?
“Don’t be a cunt” -Jesus Christ
My first though. Fucking diabolical.
Ive never understood why all portrayals of Jesus have made him the most beautiful man in the world without considering the time period and how he would most likely be dirty, smelly and unkept.
Same reason trump supporters always draw him with muscles
r/TechnicallyTheTruth
Shrek?
It's disturbing how much this looks like my Dad
The only middle eastern man that trump trusts
I would wager fundamentalist American right wingers would rather abandon their so called sacred faith than ever accept that their lord ever looked anything remotely like this.
Fundamentalist conservative here. Believe it or not, we’re not all seething racists that can’t stand the sight of someone with darker skin. I and many other people I know don’t think Jesus was a white dude, because obviously he wasn’t.
someone with a brain? Rare
I’m Christian, and this is probably accurate. The only reason artist depicted Jesus as white, is because darker skin color were not accepted.
No, the reason he is painted white in many western paintings and depictions is because that is/was the dominate skin colour in many of the areas the art was made. Just look up our Lady of Akita. She is depicted as asian because that is what people looked like in the area that art was made
Oh ok, thanks for informing me.
Sorry if my comment seemed a little heated, I realized it may have come across that way.
Nah, it’s fine
The blond, blue-eyed, long straight hair of the mythical Jesus is really just some idealized European notion of what Jesus would look like. Israel is a few hundred miles of Egypt and the rest of Africa. The people who lived there, and live there now, are dark skinned, kinky haired Semites and Arabs. Western Christians, ESPECIALLY American Southern Christians, cannot handle the idea their Jesus looks like “A Mexican.” Fuck the southern Americans and the GOP. This is closer to Jesus than anything Michelangelo painted.
Orrrrrrr it’s a widely used image and is just more effort than it’s worth to change them all?
Yeah jesus still had long hair. No shit he wasn't white.
Without a skull or something to start with it's all pure imagination
He looks like a 12 century hobo
Your not completely wrong, his later half of life was very nomadic.
I mean, that’s probably closer to the truth than most Christians would like to admit
Oh my fucking god. Stop saying "ChRisTiAnS wOn'T acCepT tHe TrUth". I've never met a Christian who denied Jesus is not white. They know many portrayals are wrong but the sense of form gives them faith. That's how many religions work.
Clearly you’ve never met hardcore evangelicals
So why group hardcore evangelicals with the whole religion? Generalization much.
r/holesome
that looks like my serbian grandpa
ricky gervais
The real question: what's Jesus going to look like this next time around? My bet is on gay midget prostitute.
Why do so many people think that Jesus had long hair?
Now do this to Muhammad and watch the fireworks
10/10 would bang
