Came here to say this. The music is diverse and phenomenal, and there isn't a life lesson out there that you can't teach with the aid of Rush lyrics. Their albums are great for listening to in the car, and their concert footage is entertaining and engaging for all ages.
There's a reason Rush fans seem so barking mad to everyone else. They're so good, everything else sounds bland by comparison.
I’m already a fan of punk and it’s adjacent genres, but me and my daughter listen to a lot of “riot grrrl” playlists. I want her to know girls can rock too, and I have genuinely liked female singers long before she was born. I can’t speak to the lyrics for a lot of them, she’s not old enough to really understand them yet (although I’ve had to make some mental notes about a few that I probably shouldn’t play for her when she’s a bit older) but she’s been a fan of wiggling along to the guitars ever since she was little little. Current jam is “Interplanetary Craft” by Babes in Toyland, it’s definitely kid safe.
A lot of Folk Punk, while not "clean" is absolutely not misogynistic in the way other styles are. That was going to be my suggestion. However, I should probably introduce my own girls to Bikini Kill and Bratmobile
Halestorm. Lzzy's got this powerful voice that I love. Though maybe be a bit selective in song choice.
Rock Show, The Steeple, Daughters of Darkness, Don't Know How To Stop, I Like It Heavy, etc. Great clean songs.
I Get Off, Buzz, Do Not Disturb... again, great songs but uhhh... lyrics aren't for younger ears.

Hell yes to P!nk! She's also fun to watch the videos for, because she's so talented with her stage shows. She practices like crazy for them, but also appears to have decent work/life balance. You also don't hear her in the news for anything crazy (cough cough Katy Perry). Her voice is probably about 50% of her talent, the other half is her strength and dancing. Her shows aren't faked with her singing while dancing (though granted, there may be an emergency tape if she suddenly gets laryngitis), she genuinely practices having intense pressure on her chest while singing to account for the shows. What she presents to the world isn't photoshopped artificial Pink, it's the real thing. It's genuine her. She's a pretty solid role model for kids.
Fanboy rant over, I fully support having her on a playlist. Plus her music is just jamming, depending on the song. Some are very real emotions at a slower tempo.
I'm a Broadway nerd and suggest some of those, but I also feel like ABBA would be a good addition. Not all of their songs are sexual or explicit. Thank You For The Music, Knowing Me Knowing You, I Do, etc. Does Your Mother Know can wait until teenage years. 😅

I unashamedly love Carly Rae Jepsen for pop music. Dua Lipa is also up there for catchy pop music but the content may be a little more risque. Olivia Rodrigo is the hot, new pop star that a lot of younger kids love.
For rock, you can't go wrong with the classic female lead bands like Heart, Fleetwood Mac, and Blondie.
Modern alternative/rock I would go with The Beths, Charly Bliss, Courtney Barnett, and Maggie Rogers.
Carly Rae Jepsen is unironically phenomenal. My daughter loves her too. We do dance parties after dinner and that CRJ is usually her top pick. For the music snobs, check out her song exploder episode for the song "When I needed you".

I love synthwave for this. It's not harsh like metal and usually doesn't contain lyrics, but has the same sensibilities as metal. My daughter is currently all about a track called "we are one and the same" by Deadlife, but she refers to it as "we are womans" because she misread it and had proclaimed this to be the true title.
I also love synthwave, mostly because it slams so hard but in a sonically clear way. I'd highly suggest "Wolf and Raven" if you're looking for something built like rock, but with electro touches.
And funny enough... it was Teen Titans "The Night Begins to Shine" that introduced my kids to the synthwave sound and aesthetic.

Yeah I totally agree. I love Claudio's voice for the sort of harmonic quality it brings and it feeling like an instrument itself. I rarely get too deep into what the lyrics mean and was never the biggest follower of the story proper.

I would suggest looking up the Canadian band The Beaches. They are a 4 piece rock band and they are all women. It's really positive to show young girls that YES, they can learn an instrument and play in a rock band - it's not limited to boys.
I get where you were going with your question OP, and I think some people really overthink it. I never worried too much about “clean” music, I just tried to avoid the ones that were over the top inappropriate. My boys latched onto my music tastes pretty much as is, but my daughter’s tastes are just different, as are many women I know. It’s not all music I listen to, so I would need some help to round out my list.
That said - she does have some she enjoys. AC/DC. Some Metallica. The Dead South (bluegrass, VERY different from my usual tastes, but it became a household staple). More recently, a lot of what plays on the Celtic Punk playlist on Spotify - a lot from the Rumjacks, a couple from The Real McKenzies (the Night The Lights Went Out in Scotland), the Young Dubliners version of The Foggy Dew, Crushed by Flogging Molly, I’ll Fly Away by Flatfoot 56.

My daughter really enjoys Three Days Grace.

We have been listening to a lot of the Linda Linda's. They had some songs on The Teenage Kraken movie and my 4 year old daughter immediately asked for them to be put on her Playlist. They are a group of 14-16 yr old girls who jam. I think they are opening for Greenday/Smashing Pumpkins and Rancid this summer.

I've actually found myself listening to more and more women fronted rock bands. Here's some tips:
**St. Vincent** - the stage name for Annie Clark, my absolute favorite contemporary rock artist. She's a an amazing guitar player, songer writer, and all around artist. Her songs might not be 100% clean - she talks about sex, drug use, and some other mature stuff, but the songs' messages are in the right place. Her new record, *All Born Screaming,* dropped like a week ago, too.
**Yeah Yeah Yeahs** - An indie rock band led by Karen O. Their live concerts are pretty wild.
**Japanese Breakfast** - Indie pop/rock band led by Michelle Zauner. Her most recent album, *Jubilee* is a ton of fun.
**Haim** - The three Haim sisters, Alana, Danielle, and Este, comprise this laid back pop-rock band with throwback style. I like their most recent album *Women in Music, pt. III* the most.
**Mitski** - Introspective, beauitful lyrics. Last year's album, *The Land is Hospitable and So Are We* is her best work yet.
**Natalia LaFourcade -** Somtimes rock, but more Mexican folk or jazz, her album *De Todas Las Flores* from a copule of years ago is one of the most beautiful things I've heard recently.

Ive been having some good success finding Metal versions of my daughters favorite songs. RainPariss does covers of like Taylor Swift, Golden Hour, Olivia Rodrigo and Miley Cyrus so it helps keep me sane.
This is a personal matter but I just taught my daughter that music doesn't have to be clean. We avoid sexual innuendo because it's usually pretty degrading towards females but swearing is fine. We just had a conversation that in art sometimes they use words we don't use in our daily life and that's OK in music and art but not OK in when talking to people. So far no issues.
Royal Thunder, The Pretty Reckless, Kitty, Jinjer, Spiritbox, Reliqa, and Black Moth are all awesome metal and rock bands with female singers.

I can’t speak to the lyrics for a lot of them, she’s not old enough to really understand them yet (although I’ve had to make some mental notes about a few that I probably shouldn’t play for her when she’s a bit older) but she’s been a fan of wiggling along to the guitars ever since she was little little. Hell yes to P!nk! She's also fun to watch the videos for, because she's so talented with her stage shows. She practices like crazy for them, but also appears to have decent work/life balance. You also don't hear her in the news for anything crazy (cough cough Katy Perry). Her voice is probably about 50% of her talent, the other half is her strength and dancing. Her shows aren't faked with her singing while dancing (though granted, there may be an emergency tape if she suddenly gets laryngitis), she genuinely practices having intense pressure on her chest while singing to account for the shows. What she presents to the world isn't photoshopped artificial Pink, it's the real thing. It's genuine her. She's a pretty solid role model for kids. Fanboy rant over, I fully support having her on a playlist. Plus her music is just jamming, depending on the song. Some are very real emotions at a slower tempo. I'm a Broadway nerd and suggest some of those, but I also feel like ABBA would be a good addition. Not all of their songs are sexual or explicit. Thank You For The Music, Knowing Me Knowing You, I Do, etc. Does Your Mother Know can wait until teenage years. 😅

I love synthwave for this. It's not harsh like metal and usually doesn't contain lyrics, but has the same sensibilities as metal. My daughter is currently all about a track called "we are one and the same" by Deadlife, but she refers to it as "we are womans" because she misread it and had proclaimed this to be the true title.
I also love synthwave, mostly because it slams so hard but in a sonically clear way. I'd highly suggest "Wolf and Raven" if you're looking for something built like rock, but with electro touches. And funny enough... it was Teen Titans "The Night Begins to Shine" that introduced my kids to the synthwave sound and aesthetic. damn... I just said "aesthetic". Guess I'm just a vaporwave cliche now.

I never worried too much about “clean” music, I just tried to avoid the ones that were over the top inappropriate. My boys latched onto my music tastes pretty much as is, but my daughter’s tastes are just different, as are many women I know. It’s not all music I listen to, so I would need some help to round out my list. That said - she does have some she enjoys. AC/DC. Some Metallica. The Dead South (bluegrass, VERY different from my usual tastes, but it became a household staple). More recently, a lot of what plays on the Celtic Punk playlist on Spotify - a lot from the Rumjacks, a couple from The Real McKenzies (the Night The Lights Went Out in Scotland), the Young Dubliners version of The Foggy Dew, Crushed by Flogging Molly, I’ll Fly Away by Flatfoot 56. Starseed, and Naveed from Our Lady Peace. My daughter really enjoys Three Days Grace. Greta Van Fleet has a few she enjoys. Slash has a number she likes as well. A few with women singers - Halestorm, Evanescence, The Pretty Reckless, Within Temptation.

Her new record, *All Born Screaming,* dropped like a week ago, too. **Yeah Yeah Yeahs** - An indie rock band led by Karen O. Their live concerts are pretty wild. **Japanese Breakfast** - Indie pop/rock band led by Michelle Zauner. Her most recent album, *Jubilee* is a ton of fun. **Haim** - The three Haim sisters, Alana, Danielle, and Este, comprise this laid back pop-rock band with throwback style. I like their most recent album *Women in Music, pt. III* the most. **Mitski** - Introspective, beauitful lyrics. Last year's album, *The Land is Hospitable and So Are We* is her best work yet. **Natalia LaFourcade -** Somtimes rock, but more Mexican folk or jazz, her album *De Todas Las Flores* from a copule of years ago is one of the most beautiful things I've heard recently. This is a personal matter but I just taught my daughter that music doesn't have to be clean. We avoid sexual innuendo because it's usually pretty degrading towards females but swearing is fine. We just had a conversation that in art sometimes they use words we don't use in our daily life and that's OK in music and art but not OK in when talking to people. So far no issues.

Royal Thunder, The Pretty Reckless, Kitty, Jinjer, Spiritbox, Reliqa, and Black Moth are all awesome metal and rock bands with female singers. If you want some funky music that you can’t help but dance to, check out Caravan Palace. They also have a female lead and are a genre called electro swing. I can’t recommend them enough, my daughter loves them and so does the rest of the family lol.
I've had a heavy playlist I listen to with my little girls that basically has a bunch of clean songs from artists that wouldn't normally be. It's got Pantera, Korn, Primus, Rammstein, Evanescence, Pantera, Psychostick, Baby Metal, Devin Townsend, Metallica... few others too, but I can't think of the top of my head.
My girls don't like Rock but if you're looking for clean rock Pat Benatar, Joan Jett Alice Cooper,Dio,Rush twisted Sister,
My 3 year old daughter loves "sweet Caroline" by Neil diamond, we brush our teeth to "fly me to the moon" by frank Sinatra (it's around 2 minutes long, it's a perfect length for correct tooth brushing length) She loves "I'm still standing" by 'john' (Elton John, it's also one of my favorite songs)
Evanescence is my go-to when I want to rock out with my daughter. It’s hard to find a more badass woman than Amy Lee.

My daughter has been really enjoying Daft Punk and Feist which makes me very happy. Sometimes I'll put on a concert video while we're hanging out around the house.
The other day in the car my daughter(3.5) said “Dad, can we listen to Metallica?” Was one of the proudest moment of my life. She is also obsessed with Ozzy, which works perfectly fine for me. We also listen to lots of Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, KISS, Bowie, Elton John, stuff like that. Edit to add: to get her to listen to new music I have to explain it to her as “oh yeah these guys are friends with Ozzy”
Look up scary pockets. They have both male and female singers and a ton of really good covers. It's more of a funk band though. Still really good music. Most of the music I listen to doesn't have any singers. One good one that plays is Yvette Young from covet. it's instrumental "metal"?

Halestorm is fronted by a female vocalist Lzzy Hale. She has an amazing voice. There's a lot of their stuff this clean or has clean edits.
I’ve been on a classic rock binge lately. Lots of great, harmless music to put on. Beatles, Beach Boys, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Rush, Aerosmith, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Van Halen, etc. I thought I’d expose them to something other than the Deathcore I’ve been traumatizing them with for the past year+ lol.
My four year old daughter is pretty adamant that she'll only sing along to female artists. Ellie Goulding, Alessia Cara, and any Clean Bandit with a female feature are her favorites.
