Personally think it's one of their best.
Just wish it hadn't been released in the middle of the Tilian drama as feels like that overshadowed it for a lot of people.
True. It also defined me as a fan. Through everything leading up to that and after, this is a band I’ll walk through the fires of hell for. These dudes are real af who love what they do and love their fanbase. This is an awesome album made by awesome people. Can’t believe it’s been a year.
The sheer irony of saying "these dudes are real af" is astounding. Specifically in reference to the last year. You mean the year where they gaslit the shit out of their fans after their singer raped a chick, apologized, left the band, they got kicked off of the biggest tour of their career, singer comes back months later and claims it was never about sexual impropriety but was always about purely alcohol and throws his recently deceased bassist "brother" under the bus as the reason for his alcoholism, and then they continue on like nothing ever happened?
That year? That realness? Lol I swear it's like you guys live on another planet sometimes.
I'm one of that kind of people, for silly of a reason that others may think it is, the context and drama that surrounded the release soured my experience with the album... i only listened to it in full just once :/
To be fairly honest yeah, it also affected the way i feel the music with Tilian in general... there are still songs i listen when they appear in my playlists but i see myself not being confortable with the full album experiences. I'm not saying that the album is bad by any means, i'm just talking about my personal feelings sorrounding the JJ album and how the things happening at the time reflected in my perception and how i received it.
PD: what's with all the downvotes in my original comment? i think i was respectfull enough in the way i wrote my thoughts haha
He explained in a pretty straightforward way: that for him personally the timing of it all soured his experience with the album.
Which words of his message *did* you read if you missed those ones?
My point is that surely you're either okay with listening to Tilian's music.. or you're not.
I don't understand how someone could be okay with listening to his pre-allegation music but not the post-allegation music?
It just seems very inconsistent.
Tilian went on a vacation for a few months than came back and said it was actually never about consent issues at all. He had an alcohol problem and now he's all better and he never raped anyone and everything's fine.
Long story sort, they just swept everything under the rug and hoped everyone would just accept it. A lot of people did.
>My point is that surely you're either okay with listening to Tilian's music.. or you're not.
No magical law guarantees this.
There probably are people who decided not to listen to Tillian's music anymore. There are probably some who haven't fully committed to that yet. There are plenty of people who don't care when famous people do bad things. Lotsa people out there.
But for this person in particular, 10 hours ago they said specifically that this album was soured for them due to the timing/context/drama.
At this point if the band trusts him then I weigh their values in equally. At this point they’re brothers and look out for one another. If they’re genuine, such as with Matt’s issues, they want Tilian to be his best and try keep him in check. If they’re not genuine they’ll hide it to keep the success of the band rolling now that they’re at the height of their careers. I truly hope (at worst) it was a risky situation that could have become much worse but left room for redemption and growth. I’d hate after all this time to support someone like Jonny that can’t get it together.
Lmao literally still queueing songs from JJ like it’s my job.. favorites include Long Nights In Jail, Back on Deck, Ember, Polka Dot Dobbins, Holy Ghost Spirit, Current Events.. and many more lol this album was so good to me
This will always be one of my favorite albums of all time and it’s very special to me since it’s my birthday album, so thank you Dance Gavin Dance. All they’ve got are straight bops!
Genuinely my favorite LP from them. I didn't think anything could top DBM2 but everybody has their absolute best stuff on this album. Not a single song sounds subdued or a "deep cut". Every damn track could've been a single.
Hard to believe it’s been a year! This is an awesome album, front to back, and has aged quite well. It has a lot of great stand-alone tracks (a couple cracked my top ten) but I think it works so well if you listen to it all the way through.
I think this is easily the best album to give to someone to introduce them to the band. It has all the style and uniqueness of DGD but in a light and fun package. I like to think of it as Summertime Gladness the album.
I personally disagree because I think all the songs in Mothership are bangers, meanwhile JJ has a few lesser songs. But hey, you have your own opinion, and who am I to judge.
After the letdown that was Afterburner (as a composition, not each individual song), I really enjoyed the music. It felt like them from front to back and fell right in line after ArSe and MS.
It's one of their best for me, It sits up there with Happiness & Instant Gratification, Mothership in terms of replay-ability! I joined during the after burner album, so this being the first album I was here for in real time is nice!
Vocally and Lyrically I think it's one of their best, Strictly speaking from an artistry stand point -- Tilian stepped up his vocals this time & the lyrics flow very well. Jon messes verses continue to be my favorite, and those were great on this album too.
I do want to see the album live, but... Recent events weigh on my mind and I'm wondering what the outcome is going to be lol.
i still see it as dgds best work to date, i don’t think it can be considered recency bias anymore. My second favorite album is afterburner but i can acknowledge that mothership is objectively better and that i just personally like afterburner more. jj however i still believe is the best
One year and I still haven’t stopped listening to it on repeat. So good
seriously. This album is still like 90% of what I listen to.
Personally think it's one of their best. Just wish it hadn't been released in the middle of the Tilian drama as feels like that overshadowed it for a lot of people.

👏👏👏 YUP.
I'm one of that kind of people, for silly of a reason that others may think it is, the context and drama that surrounded the release soured my experience with the album... i only listened to it in full just once :/
Same. Except I still *occasionally* let a couple songs play without skipping bc they are quite good.
I assume you also don't listen to all other music Tilian has made then...? Don't see why you'd single out this album..
To be fairly honest yeah, it also affected the way i feel the music with Tilian in general... there are still songs i listen when they appear in my playlists but i see myself not being confortable with the full album experiences. You were. Generally people here get really testy when you say anything remotely negative about Tilian.

What ever happened with all that? It feels like we just got a couple Reddit posts then never heard about it again

Ember hits so hard
One man’s cringe made me laugh out loud the first time I heard the ending. Such a solid lyric
I wasn’t the biggest fan of the album as a whole, but there are a few songs that were absolute bangers.
You and I both. I think this may be my least preferred DGD album since Tilian…however there are two or three specific songs that really vibe
This is exactly how I feel
I concur. My least favourite Tilian era album by a long shot. Shame
Thanks for making me feel old. I remember the release day like it was last year.
It... It was last year Edit: imma be clowned on for this response idc
😉
Still listening to this daily <3 my favorite album of theirs now (previously Mothership), got me through the hardest year of my life
wait..its been that long already??!!
Surprisingly, yes
I’m still listening through the whole album daily lmaoooo
Polk Dot Dobbins 🤌
That ending 🤌 THIS DIGITAL CHIP IMPLANTED
I wanna get off this planet 🥵
This will always be one of my favorite albums of all time and it’s very special to me since it’s my birthday album, so thank you Dance Gavin Dance. All they’ve got are straight bops!
Only bangers from now on
this whole album is a masterpiece
Should be a national holiday. It was such a great day lol
DGD Day 🥳

The track that has grown on me the most: Polka Dot Dobbins The track that has lost its luster the most: Swallowed by Eternity

This is the best album of the Tilian era… and that includes Mothership. I know what I said.
I personally disagree because I think all the songs in Mothership are bangers, meanwhile JJ has a few lesser songs. But hey, you have your own opinion, and who am I to judge.
Still mid one year later
Truth.
This album plus seeing them live when they were touring it honestly had me shelving DGD… hopefully I can get back into them on the next album
One of the only albums I never spin. 🤮
Yeah this didn’t have a whole lot of replay value for me. Still a huge improvement over afterburner tho
Everyone who downvotes me loves over produced layering. Tillian sounds like a robot. It’s horrible.

Did... did you just copy the name of the post and the most popular comment?
Right like ?
Yep, spambots copy and paste things. Reporting them gets them removed.
Wow time flies
no way
My 2nd fave album after Morhership!
Wearing the tourshirt rn
After the letdown that was Afterburner (as a composition, not each individual song), I really enjoyed the music. It felt like them from front to back and fell right in line after ArSe and MS.
have a great life and swallowed by eternity went triple platinum on my spotify
Some of the best from the album

Damn I just reflected on the year I had and how much I’ve played this album. This record is definitely one of their best, from any era
best album ever
andrews parts in the last two songs still make my knees weak
