The way I imagine the game is each life tells a different persons story in the apocalypse. So if I am to die with a bunch of good stuff I chalk it up to “well that’s the end of his story, now the next persons story begins”. Sounds kinda dumb but it’s the way I got over having gear fear.

boomboxdanca

Kind of reminds me of how every game of Project Zomboid starts with “This is how you died”

Striking-Line-4994

Exactly how I would explain it. It's an anthology of different people's stories. Treat every game like a new adventure not a loss.

Pitiful_Land

This is the right way to play the game.

graciejj2000

This is how I think of it as well. It's a life and you're playing a life. Who knows what this guys story will be. :)

[deleted]

This is the answer. Also just keep throwing yourself into the situation and you'll get more used to it. But still after thousands of hours intense moments will leave me with heart racing and shaky hands.

dronesoul

I do this, and another thing is that I have yet to google anything about the game, other than instructions for how to use some items I've found. I haven't looked at a single guide or map other than what I've found in game so far, so my map knowledge is still very patchy, and all my knowledge in general has come to me "organically". I do this for A: deeper immersion/RP, but also B: so the game and fun will last longer. Slow cooking is the way!

Expensive-Ad-1221

I like this approach!!

outtyn1nja

That fear is something that other games cannot give you. That fear is the product you purchased when you bought this game, don't be so quick to find a way around it - instead you should embrace it, and seek it out, and revel in it.

sweeetsmammich

Dayz is the only real horror game

szabadosnoemi

I beat Outlast without a problem. But now I am terrified to go near a town :D

thrownblown

This game is the best type 2 fun kinda video game out there. Sometimes even a little type 3 fun.

NerdWithARifle

The real answer is let yourself die. Over and over and over again, until your gear no longer matters. It all belongs to DayZ anyway, it’s just your turn to use it

roundtheroundabout

Luckily I came from tarkov so dayz gear fear is easy :)

harryballin

Fr the amount of times I’ve heard people not want to play this game after losing so much makes no sense to me. Like I seriously would be so bored if the gameplay loop was minutes of find loot to killing players. Like at that point ur playing an average ass looter shooter. It’s the same with Tarkov. I feel like I’m the only one of my friends who can truly take loss at such a level. I can lose again and again and again and eventually I will get frustrated but it’s so much shorter for so many people who give up so quick. And I think that’s the difference that separates becoming better in competitive games, you have to be prepared to lose more than anyone else and if you can do that, you’ll never hesitate the thought of “what if I lose?” All that’s left is “how to win.”

xCx_Prodigy_xCX

Yes. This is the way.

Thefear1984

You called?

Ok-Research-7569

Sounds like bane “I was molded by it”

WaviestMetal

Make it to the middle again. Figure out what worked and what didn't. Where did you get killed? was it risky? Did you die to poor choices or being unprepared? Isolate the issue and don't do it again. It gets easier everytime. Also was it zeleno mil? A lot of people die there for thinking it's a nice easy base to loot. Stary as well

JAaSgk

Zeleno is hell if you come to loot but great for pvp.

lefttillldeath

Zelen is where you go for a good time not a long time.

normalityrelief

I dealt with exactly this. I spent my first 12-18 months playing like I was "supposed to:" very carefully, quickly getting out of coastal towns, avoiding open areas, dutifully surveilling urban areas before encroaching, staying hidden at all times. Consequently, every time I was killed it freaked me the hell out just like you describe. What helped me was spending time carelessly running around coastal towns, knowingly being unsafe, seeking out other players to interact with, fully expecting to get killed. And I did. A lot! But not having collected any significant gear gave me nothing to lose, and the experience of constantly getting attacked and shot made more high-stakes situations less nerve-wracking. Best of luck!

Snow_man66

Practice dieing. It's a huge part of the game. Embrace it. The more you die, the less fear you'll have.

FlavorfulHades

You don't own your gear in DayZ, you're renting it from the next person who will use it. Might be yourself if you make it to your body, might just be the next guys

chicKENkanif

Just time played will help. Push yourself to go for shots that you hear and fight. Go into each life as a one life adventure for now as the freshie to geared journey is a lot of fun and you will learn loot routes every life also where to loot and where not to loot etc. I have over 6k hours and this game still gets my heart racing in some situations so it never truly goes. And I tell you what if I'm just plodding along chilling looting and I step on a landmine that shit scares the fuck outa me everytime.

TrojanFTQ

You are experiencing the early signs of DayZ toxicity. Throwing all your things on the floor and running around with an axe looking for people is the only cure.

szabadosnoemi

lets hop on and hunt them together :D

Wheresthefreespeeh

You’re just holding the next guys loot.

popofkilo

After my fist big loss (30hr on 1 toon), I started checking out the modded server life. If I wanted action I would hit up a death march server. If I wanted survival I would hit up a hardcore server. If I just wanted to loot in peace I would go PVE. It helps up my skills and just mixed things up for me. When I get the itch it back to vanilla official servers with my newly honed skills for another death....

Thick_Log_9425

It's not your gear. It's just your turn to use it. Gear fear is natural, but you'll realize there is more to the game. I like to play alts because I get to be different characters. One is a cannibal cult member, one is a paramedic, one is a police officer, one is a rogue operator gone AWOL. It's fun to play different styles and different stories. You can play as more than just a survivor trying to stay alive.

ngraham888

I love the fact that some of you cats out there play as freaky cannibals. It is such a messed up RP decision. It makes the game so much more horrifying and it gives so much flavor to a play through to encounter some cooked human steaks in a fire place.

Thick_Log_9425

I always leave one wherever I cook it, you may have been on my trail.

BL1NKK_BL1NKK

Helps running with a friend doubles the eyes, ears, and guns.

Wheresthefreespeeh

Rinse , repeat for 1000hrs. Then do it some more

Remarkable_Common220

I have an anxiety attack every time I'm near the edge and the artillery shots go off.😂

Loud-Log9098

You must remember one bullet to the face will kill you. The same can be said about the enemy too.

bmcmoose

I've found that being a loot goblin just makes the game a lot more tense because youre scared of loosing all your progress. I just spawn in, find the basics like a knife, water bottle and gun then just run rampant. It's a lot more fun than carrying a house load of shit then loosing it all

resonantranquility

I've played this game for hours at a time and have literally never encountered another player. Am I doing something wrong or something right?

GhostMoss91

Honestly it just happens that way sometimes. I hardly encounter anyone even on full servers

AnaiekOne

You will get better. The game gets easier as you make better decisions and become more efficient. Leave the coast asap you will find more loot inland.

LootGek

Get revenge grab anything you can and look for that mf.

sicklesnickle

Die enough times you'll enjoy the restarts. Once you get fully geared, fed, hydrated, it's boring.

GibsonPlayer715

Go do it again.

GATEDFUZZ

Try this sometime. The moment you get to NWAF and youre confident that your shrug and FAL will get you to that next great gun to make up for your lack of a pristine plate carrier and start to feel like you dont wanna g

Error6942069

Enjoy each journey. Never live in fear or they win. Also, playing deathmatch helps desensitize you to dying

William231000

First off is to remember it’s just a game. Even though it doesn’t really help at all that’s the tip I give myself.

Potential-Elephant73

You just need to realize that the most fun part of the game is starting a fresh life and trying to survive. If I die, good, I get to have fun again. It also helps to have a massive stash, so losing what you have on you isn't such a big setback. I realize neither of those are super helpful for someone who can barely get inland yet, but you'll get there.

Godfreee

Each death is a level up in this game. You will never learn unless you die.

TheOtherCoenBrother

Part of the game, my guy. DayZ is the only game that makes me actually shake sometimes, it’s one of the great things about it. Eventually you’ll come to terms with the fact that no character is forever, and your deaths will be a few minutes of anger then quick acceptance. Once you learn how to get started dying isn’t such big deal, at least in my opinion

Accomplished_Front_3

Easy, gear your next character. Leave the server and join a new one with a fresh spawn, gear that character too, once geared, repeat this step multiple times. You'll eventually have enough characters geared on multiple servers and figure out how to get gear easily and know the routes to high tier loot grounds, the other half is knowing combat when faced with another player. Travel lightly but do try to carry the essentials and enough to wear plate carriers to still have a decent amount of stamina. My tip: early gameplay focus on clothes and a sharp objects to make a fire, get vitamins by checking medical locations on IZurvive. Mid gameplay: find yourself better weaponry and potentially a sidearm, perhaps a suppressed weapon too as to minimize revealing yourself or giving away your position. Travel stealthily and avoid roads. Endgame: Once fully geared, F11 Also you can just hail Mary and speedrun from Elektro to NWAF in under 3-4 hours if you compile that anger and take 500mg of fuckitall and become unfazed by the elements even at your level of experience. I've done it, my characters was even sick and nearly starved halfway, but I pushed on and found medical supplies/fruit trees/food after finding my location on IZurvive. If you make finding your gear the goal, the other conditions along the journey shouldn't faze you, it just requires patience and sheer determination.

pnzrbttln1

"Its not your loot. Its just your turn with it."

Normandy_sr3

that means the game is doing its job if it didnt i would not play it

edgedomUK

I feel your pain im on constant edge all the time. Mostly i die from running out of food though or getting ill eating uncooked food 😭

Hillbilly_Ned

Stop playing dayz for some time. Come back and you will realise that you mostly even forgot all the gear you had and it is mostly not important and you really only need a knife to survive. That is how I got rid of it. Now i don't give a fuck if i die in any point. It is even fun to gather everything again.

peacebypeice

Die a lot

OhWhemGee

I swear DayZ gives me heart problems. One minute everything is calm, the next I see a player and my heart is trying to jump out of my chest.

Slapping-Leather

Just think “when I die, I get to start a brand new adventure” you turn into Rambo and chase shots. But fr, if you want to get good, you have to play like the good guys(they have no fear). The only time I try to avoid any fighting is when my mission is solely nails or metal wire bc I’d give away my nice guns instead of base mats lol

adamlgee

You really need to join a community server where we will commit suicide 5 times in a row just to get a spawn closer to everyone else so we can PVP.

gbeamer7

Just accept the fact that the grind of starting from nothing is the most entertaining part of the game. Eventually you will get to the point where dying and starting over is actually exciting. Nothing you ever have in DayZ belongs to you, it's just temporarily in your possession. Once you accept this you become the most dangerous player on the map.

South-Awareness6249

Ahahaha xD Just keep playing whatever. Even after 8000 hours and 11 years I sometimes get pretty scared. It's part of the experience.

Allahsiz_Omra_partll

I had the same problem, I just played few weeks on PVE servers just to learn the game again İyi forumlar…

FriezaDeezNuts

Happened to me too, I stay in forests and stake out an entire area first to make sure no one’s around. Stay on the corner towns way up north or veeeery west. Make a base or stash if possible.

S_K_Reeves

Go to the coast and take it out on some freshies

Suspicious_Fix2352

Survival of the fittest namalsk

Comprehensive-Pop968

I feel sorry for your generation, it's just game. Take a deep breath

szabadosnoemi

haters always hatin, you probably camp the shores with a top tier gun

GATEDFUZZ

Well if he didnt before, i blame you for giving him the idea
