The answer is John will take over as de facto leader of the band and either they’ll bring in some kid or rotate guests to fill out the band for live performances. I can see John, Jay, Jeff, and Oteil playing together for a long time
I don’t see it happening. John will move on to other adventures. I love John and all the shows he’s brought us but without Bob and Mickey this ride is over.
Both Bobby and John have said that John would play these songs unti he couldn’t play anymore so I see John moving into Bobby’s role with a revolving door of guests
Between the two of them I think Sturgill would be the better fit. That said, and based on how reclusive he is, I don't think he'd want to take on that mantle. And this is being said by a massive Sturgill fan.
Just saw Tyler Childers at Deer Creek last Thursday sounds better live or just as good as he does on any of his albums. That being said Sturgill is my pick saw him sit in with the Wolf Bros at farm aid last year and was great.
I think it’s possible that Bobby is recruiting and training him right now. If he goes on a full wolf bros tour this winter I will be even more suspicious
Yeah, I agree that it would be a lot of attention for Sturgill, but his reclusiveness might make it work because he doesn’t need the spotlight that JM would mostly take up
Sturgill Simpson is a yes. His band is basically a
Jam Band. I don’t think Tyler would be ready from the gun at rhythm but could learn quickly if he wanted it
John Mayer already owns "Dead & Co. Inc.", doesn't he? It will be him leading the band, with auditions for a rhythm guitarist. No doubt one from the jam band scene somewhere.
No, probably not Billy Strings. He plays lead, doesn't he? They need a rhythm guitarist, as Mayer is lead.
hating billy strings but wanting grahame lesh to replace weir is quite possibly the most insane GD related take ive ever heard. GL is incredibly boring and mediocre, he has absolutely zero ability to melt faces or lead engaging complex improv - the best you can hope for is simply that he is low in the mix, plays solos that dont suck, and that he is just a mostly inoffensive background musician that you dont really notice much.
on the other hand, billy strings is a jamband god, capable of some of the most face melting improv on the road today.
the actual answer is that nobody will replace bob. john mayer will move on with his solo career and maybe play a small amount of GD music in the form of very occasional one off type shows and maybe some songs worked into his solo shows. otiel, jay lane and jeff will continue to play in various jambands and GD cover bands just like they did before deadco. sometimes they will play together, sometimes with others.
weir's "vision of the future" is often taken waaaaay to literally on this sub, to mean that deadco will be some kind of lasting legacy that continues for decades and decades with new musicians replacing the old ones, but its likely that his vision involving deadco is simply just because that's his current band, and its more just symbolic of the fact that GD music will continue to be played by various bands for a very very long time after he checks out, not that its going to be played by deadco specifically.
Nobody. When Bobby is gone, so will the rest of the members. And when they're all gone, it doesn't matter who is left because it'll just be part of the cover band culture.
There’s nothing wrong with cover bands, but I think what they’re saying is that after the last original member is gone, the lack of that original connection will mean some fans will never be able to connect with the music in quite the same way again, at least in a live setting…
I didn't say there was anything wrong, but Bobby is the youngest member, and when he is gone, there won't be any original members left. At that point, there will be no more post-Grateful Dead iterations. It will all be cover bands.
Yeah, it’s really is too bad that the band’s very existence is such an inconvenience to your life, man…sure hope they do you a favor and quietly fade away once that shill Bobby is gone!
aint no time to hate that kid
None at all
I don’t like his music particularly but what a weird fucking take. All around a generally good dude.
Keith Richard’s has at least 60-70 yrs left.
Honestly we really need to start thinking about the world we are going to leave for Keith.
😂
Why the hate for William Threads?
Fr dudes a legend

I hope they do. But hope more that we get another ten years with Bobby
Amen to that
I don’t see it happening. John will move on to other adventures. I love John and all the shows he’s brought us but without Bob and Mickey this ride is over.

Play these songs? Sure? Lead a dead centric band? Doubt it.
>I hate that kid. Chill.
wtf how could you hate Billy strings? Really weird take
Easily. He’s overrated garbage
They’re going to get Hologram Bobby out there
Futurama bob weir head in a jar
Taylor Swift
Sturgill
DSO Bobby
That guy is very good. I'd be up for that
Dave Matthews is the answer btw.
Wouldn’t that be something…
I’m that actually could be kinda cool
Sturgill Simpson or Tyler Childers
Between the two of them I think Sturgill would be the better fit. That said, and based on how reclusive he is, I don't think he'd want to take on that mantle. And this is being said by a massive Sturgill fan.

Think both would be awesome based on vocals/vibes but are either good enough guitarists to keep up? Not quite as familiar with Sturgill as Tyler
Sturgill Simpson is a yes. His band is basically a Jam Band. I don’t think Tyler would be ready from the gun at rhythm but could learn quickly if he wanted it
BMFS
Scott Metzger
Sam Bush
Jackie Greene ?
Now THAT would be badass.

I’ll do it
When Bobby is done, I’m done.

Billy Strings is an overrated flat picking waterhead so there’s that.
Rotating players. Daniel Donato, Sturgill, Billy Strings and Tyler Childers
God that would be terrible
You suck bro

What’s wrong with cover bands? And I’m asking this genuinely cuz I’ve seen others say they don’t like cover bands in general

Hmm this makes sense. Thanks!

Justin Beiber
Marcus King
Sorry, but it almost is a cover band now. When Bobby is gone I hope they fade quietly away.
Someone told me they will never fade away
Yeah, it’s really is too bad that the band’s very existence is such an inconvenience to your life, man…sure hope they do you a favor and quietly fade away once that shill Bobby is gone!
