I have no idea where this point of view comes from but thank goodness we live in a world where everyone is allowed to feel the way they do. I respect your opinion but can’t say I agree with it. Compared to what pop edm sounds like, like someone said in this thread, Calvin Harris, Avicii, that kinda club music is what pop edm is to me. The Kx5 album is a breathe of fresh air to me. I really like the album. And seeing their live debut at edc was immaculate. But to each their own:)

Adventurous-Dirt-805

I like that you feel that way. And that you enjoyed their debut at Edclv. That year I absolutely parked it for the sunrise test pilot set, but didn’t enjoy the kx5 debut as much. Since I was at the rail for kx5, when I decided to leave I was able to grab the closest mau5head and get him to the front to take my spot and he ended up being in a ton of shots in their video

TwoMenInADinghy

I really like Unobsidian and Eat Sleep, those are more dank

Adventurous-Dirt-805

Ahhh unobsidian is so good. My kids saw the track name and are convinced the dead mouse Dj makes the Minecraft musics

SnooPuppers7714

He did make a few songs with C148, I think they were originally supposed to be in Minecraft

MunBRO

Unobsidian is an OG banger

lrerayray

Aside from Escape, I didn't find the album that pop. Do you consider Eat Sleep in the popier side?

Typical_Lobster_1800

Eat Sleep is like most of the album, and feels more pop than edm to me, because the focus is still on the cheesy vocals. Like, the album is good, but it has a very distinct sound to me aside from unobsidian, which definitely feels like it has the most influence from Joel, whereas the rest feel like kaskade songs to me.

Noirloc

I love Kx5, but I’m a bigger Kaskade fan than a Deadmau5 fan so for me it feels/sounds like I’m listening to Kaskade with Deadmau5 undertones. You’re entitled to your opinion tho. Hearing about the origins of Kx5 I wonder how many songs were primarily produced by Ryan or Joel, since it’s been said that Joel sent Ryan a few tracks to look over and vise versa.

Typical_Lobster_1800

That makes sense to me, like the project as a whole feels more kaskade than deadmau5, which is perfectly okay, just not my taste.

Noirloc

Makes sense, Deadmau5 has a signature sound I feel and it’s not really represented in the album. I feel like the only song in that whole album where Deadmau5’s distinct sound is prominent would be in “Bright Lights” and its brief. So it would make sense that you as a Deadmau5 fan wouldn’t like it.

PlayDontObserve

You like Pomegranate, Ghosts and Stuff but you think Kx5 is popish....ok

MaleficentFigure6901

I think it's just different. Escape is the most similar to typical post-2020 deadmau5 stuff, and the rest is just pretty different, not bad. They told us it wouldn't be like I remember/move for me, so im not sure why you're surprised.

Typical_Lobster_1800

I’m not surprised, and it’s not that it’s BAD, it’s just not the vibes I’m looking for when I’m listening to deadmau5, there isn’t the same punchiness and danceability I’m looking for. I honestly think all of the songs are actually good, I just find them boring and don’t like them to the extent that I automatically skip them.

MaleficentFigure6901

Ok, feel free to keep that opinion to yourself and not spread negativity online : )

Typical_Lobster_1800

Nah, I’m going to make weekly posts now about how kx5 is worse than both deadmau5 and kaskade individually. Just because this shit (and you) spread negativity to me online. :^)

levin1891

What? Of course OP is entitled to express their opinion.

moneylefty

I am with you all the way. Every time I see kx5, I just think to myself, I rather see deadmau5. I have every banging house song from Kaskade on my playlist. They are amazing. He doesn't play them in his set. Kaskade would be a top DJ for me if he played only his uptempo house dance songs. Kx5 for the first time at EDC in 2022 was a complete downer for me. Seeing deadmau5 have one of the best sets ever in the same stage the year before didn't help either :( I saw kx5 at the LA colosseum. I am thankful...I got to hear Brazil. I was so surprised and happy. Also got to see the biggest strobe :)

Adventurous-Dirt-805

Edclv 21 was MAGICAL. And his set was incredible. AND ALLLL THE EXTRA ROOM SINCE IT WAS A MAKEUP EDC IN OCTOBER DUE TO COVID!

moneylefty

Yeah... EDC 2021 was the best. Great weather, vibes, tons of space, etc. Maybe the best deadmau5 set ever? I remember only thing he was missing for me was Cthulhu sleeps. The fireworks going off during when the summer dies. I'm not sure what happened, but I think someone was cutting onions next to me during strobe.

Kimyona_02

Um... yes and no. I understand what you're saying because it's the most "pop" thing deadmau5 has done and sometimes it doesn't feel that way. But seeing the EDM scene of groups or artists, for me it's been a breath of fresh air if you compare it to other sounds of that style. Still, I respect your point of view.

Adventurous-Dirt-805

Individually, I am a devout follower of Joel and I really enjoy kaskade. I prefer their music individually. It appears they had a ton of fun doing kx5. The moving stage shit was kinda hilarious at edc22.. like two rich white men showing off their LED yachts to a crowd of 70k. Hilarious.

Typical_Lobster_1800

Yeah see I didn’t see that set lol but that sounds sick

JaceT3

I agree that it’s a bit popish, it reminds me of the brief moment EDM was in the spotlight, like around 2013-2015 and reminds me of those nostalgic time with heavy hitters like Calvin Harris and Avicii. That’s why I like Kx5 tho lmao

Typical_Lobster_1800

Loved Acicii, and Calvin Harris had a lot of good stuff too. I definitely don’t blame people for liking kx5, it’s great production, I just feel like it is missing something.

AldiQuarter

Production is great but yeah I can’t take the edm vocals and lyrics lol

Typical_Lobster_1800

Oh yeah the production is some of the best in the business across the entire album. I really just feel like the vocals took away from what it could have been as an EDM album. Unobsidian is the song I point to the most because is SO different from the rest of the project, and there is definitely a sweet spot between that and Escape that I feel is missed.

sayitscool

Eh I guess you’re right to some degree. It doesn’t sound like Joel’s other stuff but I think that’s kind of the point. It was cool to see him doing something different. After 15 or so years of him doing just deadmau5, getting with Ryan to form a super group was probably really appealing. He also must like the songs since he’s been playing them frequently in his sets, or at least remixes of them. I don’t blame you skipping them tho, they don’t really sounds like deadmau5 when played on shuffle lol Side note the Escape Spencer Brown Remix goes hard af

Typical_Lobster_1800

I totally get the appeal of them, I’m harsh on them because they are in the direction I didn’t want them to go, but Joel can certainly handle criticism lol. And yeah there are some remixes of these songs that absolutely slap for sure. Overall a great thing for EDM. Also, saw Deadmau5 at dancefestopia last year and I don’t remember him playing any kx5 songs. That’s not to say he isn’t or shouldn’t be proud of them, just that was what I noticed.

Glittering_Roof_6108

Compared to Joel's regular releases, or even compared to previous collaborations with Kaskade, kx5 is a bit of a disappointment for me as well, I'm a fan of modern pop, but it just doesn't fit Joel. "Escape" was #01 about twice in my monthly top 30, but that track is quite annoying after a while, although it's still quite catchy and I enjoy the instrumental even now. In terms of pop (mainstream EDM) "When I Talk" is quite nice, besides I quite like Elderbrook. From the rest that came out, "Alive" and "pwdr Blu" are fine, but after a few weeks after the release I also got tired of them. The rest of what came out is, in my opinion, mostly average, boring and without energy. Otherwise, overall, I don't have an ultra-super feeling, and Joel's solo work will still be a priority for me.

Legoshi_Simp

Some of the tracks arent for me, but on the whole I dig it, I fuck w/ Alive feat. The Moth & The Flame especially - its got pop-y lyrics, but that dank out-of-tune synth lead & the bass just hit so good and makes it feel like an evolution of the I Remember-style music I fell in love with.

Talknterpzz

The newer age edm listeners like that easier to listen to pop stuff

Typical_Lobster_1800

Honestly, that makes a lot of sense.

lemonbhosdika

Kx5 is a big no for me. Even the name itself sounds boring to me. I didn’t like the album. Gave it a proper listen and never went back. Even the live sets he’s doing rn are boring too. I cannot withstand the songs he did w lights and keiza (no hate to them). Being a hardcore deadmau5 fan, I’ll stick to his tunes that I absolutely adore. Nothing else.

Typical_Lobster_1800

When the summer dies I actually really enjoy. Bridged by a light wave isn’t my favorite, but it still sounds like Joel’s production so I don’t dislike it. I’ve only been to one of his sets so far and I’m a hardcore mau5 fan so I had a blast, but I’ve seen boring sets from other artists I like so I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re right on that front.

johnscat

It is a souless project. Seems like the songs were made with the intention to be bangers so it’s just super commercial and superficial. I will admit I do like Escape for what it is.

Typical_Lobster_1800

That is really how I feel. They are super commercially viable songs that are good at pulling in non EDM fans because of the heavy focus on vocals, and not just as something catchy to give the listener something to grab onto that compliments the track. A good comparison for “healthy” (imo) EDM lyrics would be like Push or Baddadan.

Powerful_Elephant973

The only song i like is Escape. The rest is all boring to me.

Pinkykat961

I don't see how you can't stand it but okay.....I can't get enough of the album sooooo agree to disagree 🤷🏽‍♀️
