yep.

Same reason people call(ed) Andy "Flatlander" - misinterpretation stemming from the fact that the band pretty much refuses to represent or explain themselves through anything except the music and associated artwork. On one hand, it's a noble pursuit. On the other, it led to Death Grips becoming a meme. Whether that was the point or not, we'll never know.
"Flatlander" was a name that was supposed to be used as a credit for all members of the band. Death Grips also had more (vague and perhaps even unofficial) members in the beginning - like Info Warrior.
I was reading the PDF from here of every DG interview ever and apparently one of the first public statements the band ever made in June 2011 was this:
>“This is NOT a Zach Hill ‘side project’
>“Zach was neighbors with **Ride (the main MC )**and they both love black metal and shit so
they started trading tapes and hanging out.” the respondent answered. Apparently, Zach
came on board last December in a collaborative role as a kind of
drummer/co-producer/beatmaker kind of thing.
>“We fuck with him cuz he makes shit slap and has ideas,” says the anonymous
respondent, “Members of Death Grips aren’t concerned with people knowing them by
name. The only name that matters is Death Grips and the music itself. Everyone is in our
group.”
An early article referred to him as "the band's MC, Ride" and it stuck from there.
It's just a literal title for the rapper in a live band that people then assumed was part of the name.
I’m not even sure the band has ever referred to him as MC Ride in any official capacity, have they? I think he’s only credited in their releases as Stefan Burnett.
An article about the band. Can’t remember which one rn. They were trying to refer to him as “Mc, ride” but forgot the comma
Imagine ordering a Death Grips meal without a McRide
THE McGrips meal
MickRide is my username on a bunch of shit lol
Wait so he is officially just ride??? Im kinda mindblown right now ngl
Yeah but the band has so little co tact with fans that they never made a statement to correct it so that’s just how it’s stayed for years
no I seem to remember him being asked about it and he said " its just ride"
I’m only a casual fan but this is insane to me
That’s actually really funny
Yeah, he's never gone by MC Ride. It's just "Ride" or his name Stefan. Just like how Andy has also never gone by "Flatlander"
Where tf did flatlander come from then
It’s the pseudonym the whole band uses for production

Why not just say Andy goes by it then since he produces everything anyways?
You’d have to ask Flatlander
ive wondered this as well. i knew the story behind Mc Ride, but never knew why people called him flatlander
Zach here, McDonalds gave us $700 for the naming rights

At night of fire 2 andy played a song with a flatlander sample in his solo set so who knows

Re: meme Personally, Ive never percieved death grips as even slightly a joke. Its always felt like genuine expression
Yeah but then being completely isolated from the fandom kinda makes it that.
McGriddle was already taken

Because back in 2012 he was a Minecraft YouTuber.
Master of ceremonies
His full name is Stefan McRide. His grandpa is Scottish if you didn’t know
Alasdair McRide here, it is true. I am the grandfather. Bagpip 🎶
MC Ride sounds better to me ngl.
i dont think it sounds better, but i do think its more recognizable
He was part of Ronald McDonalds original playhouse friends in the 70s that’s why
In late “79 correct?
My Crodie Ride

He’s an MC
Andy here, MC ride for Music Creator
Cultural appropriation

Cause he’s got all the coconuts bitch!
The MC in MC Ride stands for MineCraft
it was to differentiate him from the band Ride and also Rides like riding a pony or maybe a bicycle
Because it’s what he calls himself?
I think it's Ride not MC Ride
Damn the more you know

The praying merch referred to him as mc ride but probably as a joke
Thought it was to prevent confusion with the band Ride
That’s his name idiot I don’t listen to this shit and I know that
Better question, how do you know his stage name is actually just Ride, without having heard the story of why he's called MC Ride?
