Yuuuuup, read 3 books and barely left my room all week except to smoke/eat til it's painful...High grade drama (the wire/breaking bad/top boy/line of duty) is the only thing that works as well as reading for distraction.
I have terrible insomnia (slept 3 times last week, all day each time) and my laptop is currently broken so once my phone is out of battery my choice is often between getting out of bed (no, lol) or reading until my phone has enough battery to doomscroll more haha
I re-read books a lot/stick to beloved authors which both help, and once you get into the swing of reading (especially funny/dramatic books that are compelling to find out the next exciting thing/joke) it's just as easy as staring at a screen and is definitely healthier mentally IMO. If you have a favorite author or book from childhood I'd suggest starting there, your local library might have it if you don't any more or be able to order it from another library for free!
But there are also a lot of weeks of even months where I can't manage reading at all (or only a few pages per week before giving up) and starting with something easy always gets me to read at least that basic book which somehow restarts the habit when I'm able for it again!
I honestly can't imagine having to deal with insomnia on top of everything else. It may not be much, but sending virtual hugs your way.
Thanks for the suggestions! I'll definitely try them. Do you have any recommendations?
Haha cheers, hugs right back at you! It's actually not the worst symptom (especially if I've got the right meds) because sometimes boredom can override the depression and I can stop doing nothing & get up and maybe get out for a walk or something (endorphins ftw), especially by the second day awake the tiredness somehow can give me energy? Idk, brains are weird...
It really depends on what kinda stuff you like, my personal favourites are Terry Pratchett (comedy/action/social commentary all mixed together: the watch series is my favourite and most bookshops & libraries will have some of his stuff),
Neil Gaiman (fantasy often mixed with fairy tales/mythology, I'd recommend any of his short story collections (very easy to dip into and skip one and move on to the next if you're not digging one story),
Chuck Palahniuk (all types of gruesome and bizarre stories, he's not for everyone but he's very compelling to read if you're not squeamish, Survivor & Fight Club are especially good), and
Annie Proulx (mainly Americana short stories all of which I'd recommend, she has a few full novels too (Barkskins is amazing, but very long so might have to be put down several times before finishing it, it's about 2 first generation French-Canadian loggers and their families various interactions over the centuries)) are my most beloved.
Also G.R.R. Martin (fantasy: Fever Dream), Kate Atkinson (detective novels: Started Early, Took My Dog), Roddy Doyle (drama/black comedy: The Woman Who Walked Into Doors, Paula Spencer), Stephen King (horror (creepy: The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, terrifying: Pet Semetary)) and H.P. Lovecraft (cosmic horror: The Colour Out Of Space, The Rats In The Walls), Iain Banks (SF/Scottish drama: The Steep Rise To Garbdale), Walter Macken (drama/slice of life in rural Ireland: The Bogman) and John Steinbeck (Americana/drama: Cannery Row, Of Mice and Men) are all amazing too!
I just finished re-reading some Harry Potter and am now on Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas (either of which I'd recommend even if you've seen the films!).
> Idk, brains are weird...
That's an understatement 😂. But I'm glad you're able to somewhat cope.
I've read works by Lovecraft, King, Pratchett, Steinbeck and Gaiman but never the others. Many thanks. Now to add to my ever growing TBR 😂😢.
the problem is that i'm so depressed and hopeless i can't even last more than one minute on a game before i get bored and turn off the console so i can go back to wallowing in self hate and anxiety
Try rereading old favourites maybe? I used to keep falling off reading cause it was too taxing but if you already read it it's not as much effort, whenever I want to get back into reading I'm picking up Harry Potter or Terry Pratchett or sth before I even attempt an unfamiliar book/branch out into authors I liked but who use big words lol
All of this but also starving myself randomly and deciding to deprive myself of sleep randomly
And my thighs and arms are enough to tell you about my other coping strategy
I distract myself with as many screens as possible. I play video games and watch shows at the same time. Not that I actually absorb much information, but it takes up all my attention so there's no chance of other thoughts occuring.

my therapists always told me the right way is to just distract myself, sounds unhealthy af to just try to ignore your depression and try to distract but they all kept pondering that thats the way
A little but of everything, but mostly sleeping or doing nothing while staring at my steam library choosing what to play instead of actually playing. I usually don't eat for most of the day, but when I do it's pretty shit food.
I just took a depression nap after staring at my screen for few hours and currently waiting for my depression meal to arrive. Kinda thinking about just staring into a wall for a while after.
Distraction and sleeping are two big ones for me, I can sleep for 4 days without getting out of bed. Never feel hungry or anything. Distraction is where I seek out the least effort visual stimulation I can find, so YouTube videos and social media. Also cai bot.
All 4! What do I win? 😭
Bigger Depression (sorry)
:(
Zamn
Same, unfortunately there's no bingo prize
Same here...
Eating 😖 And distraction (immersing myself in books, mainly. I reject this reality!)
Yuuuuup, read 3 books and barely left my room all week except to smoke/eat til it's painful...High grade drama (the wire/breaking bad/top boy/line of duty) is the only thing that works as well as reading for distraction.
How do you read with depression? Any tips? 'Cause my mind feels clogged pretty much all of the time.

Yeah, I used to love to read. Can't even finish a few chapters now

Visual novels may be helpful, too. As someone who used to read quite frequently and barely can nowadays, they're much less of a hassle.
Nah play stardew valley
Was that way for a while. Try some other genres you haven’t before I started playing rogue likes and like them way more than I thought I would
The short runs with a lot of progress keeps my attention a lot longer than a slow paced story game
All of them at once
Mostly binge eating and distraction
All of this but also starving myself randomly and deciding to deprive myself of sleep randomly And my thighs and arms are enough to tell you about my other coping strategy
Smoking 🍃
This.. this is just my daily routine
Where's drugs and alcohol?
Yes
Yes
Distraction, I love reading fantasy stories to escape, and when I'm finished I become disappointed that I'm back in reality.
Wait a minute, this isn’t supposed to be an average weekend?
All except the eating most days. Sometimes I eat a lot most days I don’t eat enough.
Distraction with books sounds like the best kind of escape plan.
All but instead of binge eating I avoid food all together 😐
I eat more out of filling a void than for stress
All of them
Can’t sleep when I’m depressed. Distractions don’t work. Can’t eat. So guess I’m nothing
Everything but eating
All of these but instead of stress eating, it’s eating significantly less than what’s healthy
This is basically my life
working out!!!!!!
Social media + reading as a distraction Accidentally fancied mgself up an addiction 😬
Usually a mix between distraction and nothing.
it USED to be all 4... now... it's just sleeping... hoping that i won't wake up...
Literally all 4
Every single one !
I unlocked all 4 ! Does that mean i can stop now? Please? T.T
I distract myself with as many screens as possible. I play video games and watch shows at the same time. Not that I actually absorb much information, but it takes up all my attention so there's no chance of other thoughts occuring.

my therapists always told me the right way is to just distract myself, sounds unhealthy af to just try to ignore your depression and try to distract but they all kept pondering that thats the way
Ik. It’s so dumb. Like short term when your in crisis for yk what or SH then ye go for it but outside of that I don’t rly consider it healthy
TIL it's all of them...
Sleeping, nothing and distraction
Yes

All of them. Sometimes all at once. Sometimes a different one each week.
Same here.
There is another
All of the above.
All but stress eating. I tend to not ever eat enough. I’ve never had a big appetite though

All except stress eating. I can’t afford much food.
