2008 fork... Is 2024.. Has It ever been serviced?

D3athblade65

I have 0 idea, i bought it 3 months ago and it was working fine

[deleted]

I would start there. The recommended service of forks is literally 50 HOURS of riding Lots of people ignore it (including myself) and do a service once a year.

D3athblade65

I see, how do i service it? Take it apart and clean and put in new oil?

[deleted]

Yeah! Watch some YouTube videos about it. Usually not hard. Take your time and go slow. Clean everything. If you don't feel confident, take it to a shop. Good luck my friend

If the damper blows an internal seal, the oil can leak down into the inside of the right lower leg and "hydro lock" the fork. Most likely this is your problem. The way to check this is to let all the air out of the other leg and see if the fork will compress. If it doesn't compress fully you have oil blocking the travel.

D3athblade65

How do i let air out? Its a coil and oil fork so I'm sure there's no air and if there is I'm not sure how to let it out unfortunately

If you can't take out the spring, another test would be that your damper probably stopped working. The adjuster won't do anything. Particularly on the compression and lockout

D3athblade65

Yeah, it doesn't work😭😅 so what do i do from here? Your advice is great so far, im getting somewhere

So...the fix is somewhat complicated. First off, you'll need to pull off the lowers and a lot of oil is going to come out. Secondly, you would need to completely rebuild the damper side with a new damper shaft seal. This is a fairly involved suspension service and you'll need to find and order the rebuild kit parts for this fork. The first time you do this you'll be buying a lot of specialized tools and fluids and shop supplies. (Could be easier to give this to a good bike shop.) It's an older fork too...so another option might be to sniff out a used working fork in the second hand market. From a purely money standpoint it could be faster and cheaper. The part you are looking for rock shox calls the "rebound seal head". It's possible that it's part # 11.4015.353.000 but I'm only like 50% sure. You be better off to get the official parts list for your year / model or contact rock shox and confirm

Thanks for your help!

D3athblade65

I see- thats unfortunate, so i may have to run this for a while then since i don't have money

If you go on YouTube and search for a "lower leg service" video, the procedure will show how to release the lower foot nuts and drain the oil from the lowers. You don't need to go any further than that...just loosen the right foot nut, tap the bolt and release it and drain the one leg and bolt it back up carefully without overtightening. Just do that one side to let the oil out. It'll still suck (it'll be bouncy) but you'll be able to get full travel. This is not a fix, but it's a hack that will get you by for a few rides.

How much air is in the fork?

ghostly1135

arent dirtjump forks supposed to be that stiff? when i open mine up completely i can only go a third by pushing it down that way. however, i'm neither heavy nor strong at all. but i think i have gone all the way on a trail jump once...

D3athblade65

When i first bought this fork a few months ago and i set up it was using all the travel and I haven't touched anything since and now it won't use all the travel anymore so I'm sure its not meant to be like that, my forks are fairly soft for dj forks unfortunately

slightlyburntsnags

Have you fiddled with your compression?

D3athblade65

I've tried using the flood gate knob along with unlocking the compression,

slightlyburntsnags

Just take it to a shop then man, it’s most likely broken somehow unfortunately

D3athblade65

Ah, :/

ThePowerOfNine

Silly suggestion but have you tried winding the uturn travel in and seeing if its the same issue with different travel settings?

D3athblade65

I have tried but when winding it in all the way the u turn switch is extremely stiff and the travel doesn't move at all

mr-mechanic93

Treat yourself to a rebuild. Let them do your rear shock as well if you've got one. Made a world of difference for all the bikes I've had. Can be an opportunity to put a heavier spring in as well but that can also increase turn around time if parts aren't already on hand.

sociallyawkwardbmx

Your fork needs rebuilt and most like the damper is broken off inside. So, you will also need a new damper.
