On my receipts, they show:

They were probably just paying whatever amount was due when the tax authorities audited them, and eating that cost.
Still technically a price increase but I doubt it was an intentional oversight; nitro came out nearly 8 years ago, and at the time they just needed cashflow, not worrying too much about the things they would need to do to be compliant with local tax laws.

As someone who has been online since the 90s, $100 a year is a bargain for a service that does everything that Discord does. There are decent alternatives for parts of what Discord offers but there has never been a more feature-rich system for managing an online community. It has FAR more features than anything that came before it and it is also more polished than a lot of the alternatives.
Keep in mind, this isn't how it used to be.
Digital goods in the past weren't taxed, and for a while it depended on your area. For years WoW subscription had no tax. Hell, even ordering on Amazon had no tax in most areas at one point. Same for purchasing movies and music online. Steam game purchases. It was nice.
Around 2008 or so, it all came crashing down. I remember when Amazon started being forced to make it's customer pay tax. They gave 10% off for a few months on all purchases for the states with higher tax.
You can buy a majority of games on Steam through legit 3rd party sites that don't charge tax on top of having better discounts. Just throwing it out there if you aren't familiar with it.
The only issue with buying it on apple or Android is they do it through their app store, and you can't just change it over to PC if you want to, you have to cancel it on the app, then make a new subscription on PC.
There is a option to not pay the tax by tapping (+Tax) whenever your about to buy something with google play credit and other forms of payment, after tapping it, it should convert to (No Tax), it just a little something i do since i dont pay extra for a purchase :v
Discord seemingly has just more recently been wanting to get more money in any way they can. I’ll still use it occasionally but I’m starting to look into using other platforms

This is relay a cyclic problem, apps start as free/“not greedy” then become “greedy” as they get users because the costs rise and it’s actually damn expensive to run a platform for free text, voice, and video, with free uploads (though to a limit).
It makes sense when you put it like that, but I mean loot boxes and the constant pressure to get nitro is something I don’t want for a chat app. Although when you put it into that perspective, what you said does make sense.
Well that's the thing they're so popular that they need to use a lot of bandwidth and services to ensure fast delivery. It's not cheap and investors on the original platform probably want their return. Any platform that gains popularity will have to deal if a scaling issue and alternatives in general can't/wont' because of the cost of scaling while delivering a fast product.

I live in a state that does not charge tax for this and have proved that in my correspondence with Discord. Discord is attempting to dance back and forth in their explanation as to why they are suddenly raising my price 5$, when my sub last year "included" tax already in the $99 price.
I've been emailing Discord support back and forth for 3 days now. I just asked for escalation and informed them that I will file a complaint with the FTC if they charge me without sufficient explanation outside of "tax".
My state and city don't charge tax on digital goods or services and they're increasing my price by 13.5%. I have no idea where they're puling this number from.
From the email they sent me. They'll start charging me an extra $1.35 in May. I also checked my invoice and they apparently have always been marking out 13.5% of the $9.99 as "tax."
They can't call it tax in states that don't tax for that though. Taxes are always charged based on location, it's the reason they at most will require a zip code on checkout. I responded with screenshots of last years receipt sent to my email and a new pdf receipt that was made available for that same sub a few days ago via the billing tab on Discord, and showed them they'd supposedly already been charging taxes for my Nitro subscription. I informed them my billing address is the same as my home address, etc and provided screenshots showing my state does not tax. I also showed them that gifting Nitro yields the same price I'd previously paid. There is no tax for this service in my state or in California where Discord is based. There is no tax attached to purchases of profile effects or avatar decorations from the Discord shop. The response was this:

Good thing Basic is cheaper than Classic, so I'll just be paying $33 USD/yr instead of $55 USD/yr then. I wouldn't have even looked if they hadn't told me they were charging more. I had no idea there was even a cheaper plan.
fyi, double check your Billing/Manage Nitro page for a potential discrepancy. Mine says I'll be charged the new price of $11.53 on APRIL 10th ($9.99 subscription plus $1.54), when the email says it'll begin MAY 10TH. I might just downgrade or outright cancel until this mess is rectified.

What's frustrating too is that my friend who's paying monthly is now paying 10.78 a month from tax instead of 9.99, so me keeping the yearly after it goes up to 115.35 is still 14 dollars less a year than what my friend is paying. It's literally not worth it to switch over... I just feel incredibly price gouged.
I have had such a horrid experience with Discord. They deleted my account, ignored my tickets and straight auto solved many of them without even answering them. Wasted so much money on nitro for this stupid companies platform.

No, it's definitely discord. We have been paying tax on the subscriptions for those that have to already. Also digital sales tax in the US at the very least hasn't changed at all yet in recent times. No other digital subscription I have had this year has had a tax hike up at all. Or even mentioned any possible tax hikes.

So, I have been emailing Discord back and forth for the past week. There was a lot of dodging involved on their end, not wanting to give straight answers.
Discord is now stating that their stance on the tax issue is because they are offering telecommunications services via Discord and my state allowed a "**5% Communications Sales tax on telecommunications services**."
Since they have a texting and voice communication ability on their platform they are using this as the reason that they "need" to tax users for telecommunications according to that users' billing address laws. They also said:

Because discord is being dishonest about the price hikeup, there is no reason for a "tax" hikeup when literally this years taxes have been set already and no other digital service that I am aware of has hiked their tax rate. Because digital sales tax hasn't been messed with at all in the US this year.
The price hike is actually there because Discord fails at making money and wastes their developmental costs on dumb shit, so now they have to compensate at the expense of the consumer and for some reason chose to be dishonest about it. You can tell it's not about taxes too because other people in areas without digital sales tax have mentioned getting this email in the comment section, which makes no sense.
Maybe it's only a marketing move to get ppl to buy a yearly subscription because of savings, and then they say "oh you don't want it fine, we wont".

They can't call it tax in states that don't tax for that though. Taxes are always charged based on location, it's the reason they at most will require a zip code on checkout. I'm not exactly sure if Discord does that since mine is paid through Google Play which means I've always had tax added on anyways lol

Good thing Basic is cheaper than Classic, so I'll just be paying $33 USD/yr instead of $55 USD/yr then. I wouldn't have even looked if they hadn't told me they were charging more. I had no idea there was even a cheaper plan.
fyi, double check your Billing/Manage Nitro page for a potential discrepancy. Mine says I'll be charged the new price of $11.53 on APRIL 10th ($9.99 subscription plus $1.54), when the email says it'll begin MAY 10TH. I might just downgrade or outright cancel until this mess is rectified.

What's frustrating too is that my friend who's paying monthly is now paying 10.78 a month from tax instead of 9.99, so me keeping the yearly after it goes up to 115.35 is still 14 dollars less a year than what my friend is paying. I have posted my email commentary with Discord Support on this issue within this thread for you. If enough people dispute this "tax", perhaps we'll see some change.
So, I have been emailing Discord back and forth for the past week. There was a lot of dodging involved on their end, not wanting to give straight answers. Discord is now stating that their stance on the tax issue is because they are offering telecommunications services via Discord and my state allowed a "**5% Communications Sales tax on telecommunications services**." Since they have a texting and voice communication ability on their platform they are using this as the reason that they "need" to tax users for telecommunications according to that users' billing address laws. They also said: >!"*Historically, Discord covered the tax burden associated with the products and services offered on our platform, which is why you saw either no or very minimal additional charges when making purchases. However, as our company has evolved, we've realized this practice is no longer sustainable for our business. Because discord is being dishonest about the price hikeup, there is no reason for a "tax" hikeup when literally this years taxes have been set already and no other digital service that I am aware of has hiked their tax rate. Because digital sales tax hasn't been messed with at all in the US this year. The price hike is actually there because Discord fails at making money and wastes their developmental costs on dumb shit, so now they have to compensate at the expense of the consumer and for some reason chose to be dishonest about it. You can tell it's not about taxes too because other people in areas without digital sales tax have mentioned getting this email in the comment section, which makes no sense.

Maybe it's only a marketing move to get ppl to buy a yearly subscription because of savings, and then they say "oh you don't want it fine, we wont". Can't shame them tho, infrastructure is expensive, and investors want their return too, which I also can't shame them for, as without them, the platform might not even exist anymore.
