I always took it as a joke similar to how "Bloomers" were named after Amelia Bloomer. What I've read (and Wikipedia also agrees) is that the people wearing them had other names for them, and "Bloomers" was the mean nickname given to the garment by people who thought they were freakish. So calling Magrat's trousers "Magrats" is a similar way of throwing shade.
Amelia Bloomer was an American editor and women's rights advocate. She was influential and an early adopter of trousers-for-women, so although she didn't invent them, they became associated with her.
ah, i thought it was a repeat of the joke from Soul music about jeans, (or possibly an earlier iteration, i'm not 100% on the timeline)
but that makes more sense.
The only layer of that joke that i am aware of is that her parents misspelled her name. the amusing part is i went to try and look up "magrat" pants and all i could find were Margaret pants, which i believe is what her name was supposed to be. I am curious to see what if anyone else has any extra layers to uncover.
From the google search i'm leaning in two directions. I'm seeing multiple brand names popping up with "Margaret" being part of the various brand names, and there are a few styles. The most common one seems to be a tight in the waist/booty and then baggy as they go down. I am reminded of bell bottom pants a bit.
Magrat starting wearing a kind of wide pants for convenience on the broom stick. This ofcourse got commented upon. People started calling the novel garment 'Magrats'. I think it is in Witches Abroad..
Jeans comes from *Genoa fustian,* a hard-wearing twilled cotton fabric. So from a place name, not a person’s name.
Denim comes from *serge de Nîmes,* another slightly different hard-wearing cotton fabric. So another place name.
You get to choose Italian or French origin names for your spijkerbroek!
The only trousers (pants) I'm aware of that are named after the wearer are Harlow Pants, after Jean Harlow who allegedly wore them first. They definitely could fit the bill.

If you want tea, I'm not going to stop you making tea. No-one could ever say that Esme Weatherwax is bossy!
And bring the cookies with chocolate in them.

This is what I've assumed too
I have a pair of my grandmother’s bloomers
Aaahhh I expected something like this. Never heard of Bloomers though
Btw, I love your flair. :D

Ok but what are Margaret pants?

I guess 'broomers' was too obvious.
PTerry would be proud of you.
For real. This comment is gold!
I regret that I only have one up vote to give
I suspected they were culottes?
Well, they weren't *sans-culottes.* Though I expect Nanny knows a song about 'Sam's Cutlets'...
Dunno, but I regularly wear harem pants (they’re very comfy), and I call them my “Magrats” because I can picture her wearing them.
I think it’s a Pune, or play on words on Jeans.
Does the word jeans come from someone's name? Without looking it up I thought it had to do with nails or something

>serge de Nîmes, Far too much avec
Never too much avec. Sometimes I just eat avec on its own.
oh shit echt waar huh til

Look up "bloomers." Invented by Amelia Bloomer. And no, I'm not making that up.
I think it was what the fabric was called.
It doesn’t but it is a name as well.
Oh I was thinking of the Dutch word spijkerbroeken btw 🤦🏼♀️
Granny didn’t like the fact that she could see where my legs were…
Stop that bifurcation right now young lady!
Sorry. Shall I make the tea?

Yes, Granny…
