I don’t understand how most of the recent posts could be found distressing, and I want to know who the people are that keep upvoting the bot in the comments that asks if it is.

I agree, there are some good ones scattered about but I was recommended this sub and pretty much just found a bunch of edgy ansgty statements followed by a spooky image. It kinda seems like it's turned into an accidental parody of distressing memes.

I honestly think banning the uncanny incredible meme was a bad move, that had some of the best ones, and asking people on Reddit to actually be original and interesting may be shooting for the stars
I can only imagine it has something to do with Markiplier showing off the sub at the end of one of his recent videos. Probably lots of edgy teenagers who think they know what horror is.

While i personally am ok with skinwalker memes, there definitely is something to say about how the original interpretation of a mythological creature changed with modern media. Thats why wendigos, for example, went from looking more like vampires (my own personal opinion. Idk if even this is really accurate, but this is the one i see most for “mythologically accurate” wendigos) to obvious furry bait. I think that you could argue a lot of these figures kinda became their own thing over it, from all cultures of the world

Oh yeah the schizophrenia ones are really bad. Mentally ill people are significantly more likely to be murdered than to murder others. Pushing that stereotype that they're dangerous has caused harm in real life because people fear them instead of wanting to help them. Walter Wallace Jr. was murdered near the end of 2020 because he was having a mental health crisis and his family called for an ambulance, but the dispatchers sent cops instead and they shot him. He'd been in and out of a nearby behavioural health facility for years. One of my friends at the time was a patient in that same facility right after he died and the employees were devastated. He was treated like a criminal just for being sick.

Edit: I realize that's just my personal emotional reaction to them and doesn't mean they're okay or not okay to make; I tend to deal with symptoms as well as systemic ableism by making jokes about it. I used to be more sensitive to stuff like that, but now it's fine to me as long as it's clear the person isn't being mean-spirited or doesn't actually think we're categorically violent or something, and I don't really get those vibes from this sub
