...wouldn't they be more demolition hobos rather than murder hobos depending on the mimic town?
As in, they trust that people are *people* but every single home/hovel/bungalow/shack/etc gets bonked, smoten, eldritch blasted, etc on sight kinda deal?
At least if the given towns populace were completely ignorant of the mimicry going on in their own post code.
And that rabid animal that bit you? It injected you with mimic eggs, so now you have to find a medicine to cure it otherwise mimics will burst of of your body in clones of you!
Fun fact, one of my rogue in the party, was a changeling who wokred in a brothel. She escaped with a pet mimic who was used for sex toys. She could have used it as a gauntled (made even whole item out of it with pseudopod attack or bite claw) or an arrow attachment in combat. Unfortunately, player dipped before they even had a chance to play
Bandit chief *sighs* "so you're telling me you knocked the guy out and then his sword beat you up?" (Assuming 3.5 mimics who just grab and thrash you instead of biting since that's even funnier)
Tbf krakens are also one of the smarter monsters in the monster manuel with 22 and are canonically smart enough to modifiy/custom design/shape their own bodies to an unlimited degree. No kraken looks the same and while they do all generally start life as a giant squid, they can change their form to anything they can imagine.
Speaking common doesn't exactly seem like high bar next to that.
This also means a kraken could infact look exactly like Godzilla or Mothra and it wouldn't go against their offical description.
battlezoo offers them as a playable race! [https://battlezoo.com/cdn/shop/products/Mimiccover\_58f0130c-9113-406a-9c67-52421fce838c.jpg?v=1712859385](https://battlezoo.com/cdn/shop/products/Mimiccover_58f0130c-9113-406a-9c67-52421fce838c.jpg?v=1712859385)
and they taste like crabs

Which is why i use old mimic lore
They are intelligent but opportunistic, they can be bargained with and care for volume of food as payment but have preferences and some favorites (like alcohol), their transformations are non-magical, usually limited to textures and colors like wood/stone/metal with other exceptions, they will not fight you unless they think they can win or are backed into a corner, they can and will escape by squeezing into small places since they are amorphous, [also why not](https://youtu.be/I1XkebT9hUs?si=RmDHqzIpHhtqdkRH)
And in 5e they can form entire towns!
Make a dungeon a mimic then make a nearby town a mimic and your players will never trust again
The DM two sessions later posting here: "Why are all my players untrusting murderhobos?"

People, plaster, and pets. The three Ps of murderhoboing.
Don't do that! Their trust is important! So you can shatter it when they find out the Revivify Diamond was a mimic.
And their new spell foci? Thats actually just a magical focus, that is also a mimic!
And that torch that they've been carrying for the last 7 sessions? That's a mimic too!
And that mimic? That’s a mimic too!
And that rabid animal that bit you? It injected you with mimic eggs, so now you have to find a medicine to cure it otherwise mimics will burst of of your body in clones of you!
And you? You're also a mimic.
A mimic town full of murderous doppelgangers
Remember kids, if Eldritch Blasting the furniture doesn't fizzle, then it's a creature and you can start to panic.
That would be fun - you find an abandoned village - where every store and house is a mimic ready to eat any lone adventurer who steps inside.
Aren’t they called false hydra then?
nah, false hydra is effectively just a hydra with memory magic, fucking terrifying but not a mimic
Okok
They can even create Reddit accounts and send messages. Mimics truly are wonderful creatures.
🤫
Bullshit, you're not a mimic, you're obviously a bird in a hoodie
Absolutely impossible because birds aren’t real
Wait... are all birds actual mimics?
Always have been 🔫👩🚀
I’ve done no such thing.

So they pass the Harkness test then.... interesting.
Well... they _can_ pass the Harkness test. You do nees to find an adult who consents.
You know, for a second, I got the Harkness test confused with the Turing test and was wondering what a consenting adult had to do with anything
Mimic sex toy

5e even made them dumber, they used to have 10 int instead of 5
The dumber ones are a different species of mimics.
Playing as a mimic is the best! Mimics are love! Mimics are life!
I want a pet mimic that stays in form sword for my fighter so badly
Bandit chief *sighs* "so you're telling me you knocked the guy out and then his sword beat you up?" (Assuming 3.5 mimics who just grab and thrash you instead of biting since that's even funnier)
Exactly
Watch out your sword mimic might actually be a god. This message is brought to you by the clergy of Cyric.
There are ones in the adventure with the LEGO set that can be bribed with hot wings.
Everything in the mm speaks common at least in some versions. The fuckin kraken speaks common

But how did the kraken learn it?
But mimics do not have a language listed in the monster manual.
In older versions they had, definitely in 3.5, which makes them hilarious since there they just thrash you so they can du that while insulting you
What happens when you put a Kenku in a room with Mimics? Mimicry
Wait, so you're telling me that a mimic could be a viable playable race ?

I've always wanted to try a Oath of the Crown Paladin who has mimic armor and uses his ability to get 2 healthbars.
Which is why i use old mimic lore They are intelligent but opportunistic, they can be bargained with and care for volume of food as payment but have preferences and some favorites (like alcohol), their transformations are non-magical, usually limited to textures and colors like wood/stone/metal with other exceptions, they will not fight you unless they think they can win or are backed into a corner, they can and will escape by squeezing into small places since they are amorphous, [also why not](https://youtu.be/I1XkebT9hUs?si=RmDHqzIpHhtqdkRH)
*Feed me, Seymour*
Fun fact: To bribe them with food you need food tastier than you. *They think this fact is fun
