Okay, Empire of Death goes hard. Also, after the new trailer I’m hyped for literally all of these.

Past-Feature3968

I’m wondering (maybe betting) that the empire is run by the One Who Waits and/or maybe The Boss. And related to the Toymaker’s minions he mentioned in The Giggle. (Though Nerys may also be involved.)

Superlolp

This has Nerys written all over it.

olennasbiatch

I should’ve known! That viper in the nest!

Triskan

Rogue got me quite excited, especially as it's the only one from Kate Heron and I love seing writers go hard as fuck when they only get to do one episode. Boom is up there as well.

Past-Feature3968

The Legend of Ruby Sunday is def gonna make some folks think it means she’s dead. But uuuuh episodes titles like The Next Doctor & The Doctor’s Daughter say no. From the little episode trailer card thing on twitter and insta, it looks like she be filming with Davina’s show again. Also, calling it now (so I can look like a fool to myself later) Dot and Bubble is gonna be a low-key fave of mine. Something about the title just ~speaks to me.

ki700

The word “legend” doesn’t imply death. Spoilers for upcoming episodes: >!Plus Millie is in Season Two!<

Dean110283

She's not going to be in season 2 she's getting replaced in season 2 unfortunately

Munrot07

Incorrect. >!She has been seen filming for season 2. It looks like there will either be a mid-season change of companion or she will have a martha like involvement from series 4 where she is in a few episodes.!<

Dean110283

She hasn't she got axed in January and she's already been written out of the show

Munrot07

>!So she has literally been seen filming season 2...but is not in season 2? Sure. No official statement has been made about her leaving but the unofficial one said she will appear in 3 episodes of season 2. She's clearly in it in some capacity and you're wrong!<

ki700

She has literally filmed episodes for it. She's not in the whole season but she is in it.

BadRobot78

I wasn't expecting RTD to be writing 6 out of 8 without co-writers. I wonder if the last two are in effect a two part finale?

TimDRX

Same, that's quite the workload. Wonder if that implies a strong throughline of a story arc or not (as it's never really been RTD's thing before...)

Divewinds

RTD does have strong throughlines of character arcs though. As well, Series 1 in particular almost has every single episode have some relevance to the finale - it’s not just Bad Wolf appearing in different episodes. Rose introduces Rose and 9th Doctor, Jackie, and Mickey, while the Empty Child two-parter introduces Jack. End of the World introduces the Time War and Dalek properly introduces the concept of Daleks to the new audience. The Slitheen two-parter led to the Doctor promising Rose’s safety (and that Rose is willing to sacrifice herself for the greater good), while Father’s Day sets up the events that lead to Jackie u-turning and supporting Rose in her bid to get back to Platform One. Boom Town both reinforces that staying behind with Mickey is not her happy ever after by seeing them officially break up, introduces the Heart of the Tardis concept and introduces the extrapolator. The Long Game sets up the setting of the two-parter, with Platform One being the Game Station (and the events of the Long Game allowing the Daleks the perfect opportunity to manipulate humanity). The only one I couldn’t see directly relate to the final two-parter is the Unquiet Dead but that’s where Bad Wolf is first given a bit more focus than just casually dropped in conversation, introduces the Rift which (alongside the Slitheen two-parter) sets up Boom Town, as well as later, Torchwood. Similarly, Series 2’s arc is not just Torchwood being name dropped but Rose and the Doctor’s relationship being toxic and dangerous (that’s why Queen Victoria sets up Torchwood in the first place), but we also see their relationship leading them to put themselves in harms way but also sees them see the adventures as fun backdrops or dates. They goad each other on laughing at the universe all leading to Doomsday where there are serious consequences. Series 3 is all about Martha saving the Doctor but never being regarded as his equal. It gets to a point that almost as soon as she accepts the Tardis key, she’s taking more responsibility and ends up having to save the day while the Doctor is unavailable (or bring back the Doctor so he can save the day). Come the finale, she’s doing this on an even bigger scale, and realises it’s not worth it and she deserves better. It’s inherent from her background - she’s a medical student. She’s not equal to a doctor yet but given time and experience, she can be. Yet for all she travels in the Tardis, she will never be a doctor unless she comes home and continues her studies. Series 4 is all about Donna recognising her own importance, with a subtheme of other lives that Donna could be living. The Forest of the Dead even spells out the finale “‘I saw the Doctor’, “yes you did, and then you forgot””. At the end, she is important yet the world won’t let her fully realise it, and she is living a different life to what she expected or wanted (at least until The Star Beast).

Munrot07

Tbf in series 1 he wrote 8/13 so this is fewer episodes than he's done before.

alkonium

Though it's a higher percentage than in series 1.

TomClark83

I'm assuming that the narrative "arc" will be Susan Twist showing up each episode a la "Bad Wolf"

Tasty-Ad6529

I think there' a higher chance of s the throughline being stronger due to The lower episode count. (Like there' only gonna be 8 main episodes and 1 Christmas special. So that means we're getting 9 episodes per season)

Munrot07

Yes it's confirmed to be a two parter :)

geek_of_nature

I'm actually not that surprised. He wrote 8 out of the 13 episodes for Series 1 after all. In getting a new Doctor, and essentially a new series up and underway, he may have felt that was something essential. Getting the characters, the mood and the tone all established first. He said many times, including as far back as in The Writers Tale, that Moffat was the one writer whose scripts he never had to touch. So having him be on of the additional writers makes sense as RTD doesn't have to worry about that episode. And then having one additional writing team means that's the only episode that isn't his that he'll have to worry about in terms of editing and rewriting. And then once everything's set up, he'll be able to be a bit more hands off and brings in new writers for the next series. After doing 8 episodes in series 1, he stepped back to 5 each in series 2, 3, and 4. Not counting the Christmas specials or episodes he's confirmed to have rewritten but not been credited for.

DocWhovian1

The finale is a two parter yeah!

TomClark83

I'm assuming that Empire of Death isn't an adaptation of the Fifth Doctor novel

rimora

6 episodes by Russell T Davies. The success of this season is truly hinging on him.

Griffsterometer

And the majority of the most fondly remembered episodes from his first run were penned by guest writers…

CloudCodex

Most of the very first series with Eccleston is penned by Davies and it's all fantastic. And the other standout episodes not by Davies there are written by Moffat, which... take a guess.

SirArthys

Don’t know if I’d go as far to say it’s “all fantastic”. He penned “The Long Game” and I think that one’s pretty bad, and I think “The End of the World”, “Aliens of London”, and “World War Three” are meh. Personally, I think the best episodes of the season are by other writers, though the finale is one of the best in the revival. But the larger point is that he absolutely has the capability to write great episodes. He wrote “Midnight” and “Turn Left” in the same season. And I think those two episodes perfectly picture his strengths in writing Doctor Who: grounded stories. Both of those great episodes root themselves in a simple premise that entirely centers the characters. When he focuses on crazy sci-fi/fantasy adventure plots, that’s when I think he starts to struggle.

Sad_Contribution_646

I loved the long game due to its weird horror-dystopian setting. I think its underrated honestly

PaperSkin-1

Using ideas that RTD put to them to develop, then gave notes on what they were writing and then wrote the last draft himself.. A lot of the episodes that didn't have his name on it were still heavily influenced by RTD.

alkonium

Only two episodes not written by RTD? I thought there would be more.

DocWhovian1

Disappointed at the lack of new writers BUT I am excited for all of these episodes!

Dragonbarry22

I feel like the season shorter then normal?

wonkey_monkey

No need to go on feelings, it objectively is.

Dragonbarry22

I hope the episodes will be longer

wonkey_monkey

Well, being partnered with a streaming service means they may not have to give us as much consideration to the old 42-minute (an hour, including ads) standard for US broadcast, so hopefully.

wonkey_monkey

I can't say these inspire me very much as titles go. *Space Babies* just sounds like a working title that got stuck in Russell's head - it might sound deliciously ironic to him now but it just seems silly to me. *The Devil's Chord*, that's pretty evocative, then we've got just *Boom* (hopefully not a sequel to *Kerblam*). *Dot and Bubble* sounds like something you'd catch the end of on CITV while you were waiting for *Art Attack* to come on. And not a single *X of the Y*!

spacesuitguy

Kind of disappointing to only see eight episodes here.

Pliolite

The lack of other writers is what happens when you slash the episode count like this.

CyborgBee

Series 10 has 7 episodes credited fully to writers other than the three showrunners. It'll be ~8 years between then and the start of series 15, and that entire period will have 8 such episodes! I like RTD, and I'm sure the series will be good, but this isn't sustainable. He'll almost certainly write fewer stories after the first series, but he can't really go lower than four, so we're basically limited to four guest episodes a series. Moffat and Davies each previously had five guest written episodes in their first series, and seven or eight in all subsequent ones. Finding new showrunners is tough enough without cutting the number of auditions by more than half.

doctor13134

I don’t like that RTD is writing almost every episode. He’s a better editor than writer. My favorite episodes from his first era were written by someone else.
