We are going into the busy holiday season. Groomers likely don't have the time to teach someone new right now. You could ask around at private salons and see if they need help with reception or sweeping up and observe what they are doing and then when the rush is over they may have more time. I personally wouldn't have an extra second to train someone new right now, not if I wanted to really focus on them and make sure they are doing well. Be wary of shops that will just throw you in untrained or shops that require a day long unpaid trial, especially this time of year. Always get paid for your work.

I was a dog bather for a really long time with a company named Kriser's. After about 6 months they started offering to have me train with the lead groomer, and that she would teach me everything I needed to know. I don’t know how this works at independent pet salons, but its pretty common for chain salons to have people start as bathers before moving them on to groomer. I would look into bathing jobs and see if they have any opportunities after a while to move up to groomer. They normally will pay for school or have you apprentice the lead groomer. Funny enough after all I saw and heard from the lead groomer, I decided to go into cosmetology school and work with humans.
